    Thank you, Mr. Nolan.
    I just began my third year in CS, and want to start documenting my journey to reach the field of AI/ML engineer.

    A big thank you to you, sir, for making such a very well-informed, in-depth analysis. I was searching everywhere for this information and you have clarified my doubts. I have a question though, would a PhD path be absolutely necessary for AI ML research or would a master's suffice?

    • @homeschoolnolan
      @homeschoolnolan  9 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks! I want to begin by saying that I myself don't have a PhD or Masters, so reluctant to comment on their value. But I have noticed that the few top innovators who develop the new models, architectures and algorithms in AI tend to have advanced degrees. I don't think the degree is necessary per se. What I think is necessary is the passion and talent to be at the cutting edge of math and computer science for innovate and build new tech. Those types of people tend to pursue advanced degrees.

    Thanks for the video Sir!
    I have a question that confuses me later, do you think it's a good idea to use complex concepts as a black box( let's say like the optimizer Adam,transformer architecture, hybrid architectures) or is it important to understand the hell of the theory behind stuff? Is that what makes an ML engineer vs ML scientist ? I'm super interested in understanding the details yet sometimes I just feel like I need to get the job done. I sometimes feel like understanding the theory is a waste of time since it is a abstracted away in coding, yet I also feel like I'm missing a whole landscape by doing so and not giving enough time reading papers? What do you think? Your feedback would be highly appreciated.
    TL;DR : I've learned and applied the fundamentals from linear regression to optimization to neural nets

    • @homeschoolnolan
      @homeschoolnolan  8 месяцев назад +2

      You don't always need to understand the theory under the hood in order to get the job done. For example, you don't need to be an auto mechanic to know how to drive a car. However, if you need to decide between two similar tools or solutions, it then helps to understand the theory and what's going on under the hood.
      That said, it can only help to understand the concepts behind how things work. But there is so much knowledge out there, but we all have to pick and choose what we want to fit into our finite brain.

    Hi Nolan, I like you being straight about the current opportunities in AI & ML . The internet is full of AI & ML programs promising Jobs in this field. I think it's important we evaluate our current experience in this field. So i have a quick query with my ongoing struggle of thoughts, whether I should opt for AI & ML or not, now having a deep sense of AI & ML and my passion for making sense of Mathematics , I am interested in pursuing a career in this field. But with over 13 years of experience in Telecom Domain, I am not sure if pursuing MSC in AI & ML will benefit me getting into this field. I am trying to stay positive here, but your thought and advise on this matter would really mean a world to me. Cheers Amit K

      Do you know specifically what you want to do with AIML? Design new algorithms and models?(very hard). Or build exciting new AIML applications? There are probably more opportunities if you pursue the latter. You will also have more luck if you have knowledge of a particular domain/industry that can benefit from this new tech.

      Good question! To get into this field you may have to do more intense self-study with little or no pay before you land your first job. “Entry level” jobs will probably be more challenging than before with fewer openings. This is why many are already concerned about the impact of AI on jobs.

      I would start with learning Python first if AI/ML is your goal. There are lots of good books and online classes not just on Python but also on how to use Python to do Machine Learning.
      I would also study the math courses I talk about in the video: Calculus, Probability & Statistics and Linear Algebra.
      You can still work in AI/ML without mastering these math subjects, but those jobs are mostly likely to be related to data preparation and running iterative training jobs which AI/ML itself is increasingly taking over as well. Understanding the mathematical foundations will make you better equipped to make good decisions when it comes to selecting the right ML algorithms and training models.

      Learning inherently more structured and statically tired languages such as C++ or Java will bring a sense for the structuring, which you can then transfer to Python.
      There's so many things around just coding in the software engineering space, which is needed to build production grade systems.
      I come from that field now working with data scientists, developing both proof of concept and production applications, and generally they are weaker in code structure and maintainability but know stats, maths and the craft of training models well. So combined we can build better systems.
