David Blaine is a magician claiming to be the real deal. his whole goal is to convince people that what he does is real and not a trick. he'll have you believe he can actually catch a bullet in his teeth. Anyway the narrator at the beginning of the explanation mentions that this trick is also done by people without masks using smaller tubes that can't be seen underwater and behind glass, which anyone that has ever put a clear marble underwater will tell you is a real effect
David Blaine can legit hold his breath for a long time. He doesn't fake these. If you watch his videos, there are two of them, one where he lasts 5 minutes and one where he lasts 17 minutes. The 5 minute one, he is bare chested and clearly not wearing anything that could conceal a tube. Also, the spasms are real and his face is blue at the end of it. The 17 minute long one was legit and was officiated by guinness world records. Also, the reason why he was able to hold for 17 minutes is because he was on 100% oxygen for 30 minutes prior to the attempt. Lots of people have surpassed 20 minutes using 100% oxygen.

There's a cognitive bias called the "curse of knowledge." Once you know something, your brain literally can't comprehend how that knowledge could possibly not be obvious to anyone ever again. If they just showed how the trick was done then nobody would ever think it was a halfway decent illusion. By showing the illusion first it cements in the viewer's mind that "yes, this actually does work, and it actually looks pretty legit and difficult to guess." That's just how brains work.

@@SamuraiDanny Blaine has official world record, so I doubt he cheated on this one. He breathed pure oxygen before doing it which has huge impact to the trick, record without oxygen is ~8 minutes.

Robert Boland The idea of the special was to show a trick, then show how it's done, not just show how a trick is done without giving you an idea how it looks first. There's a cognitive bias called the "curse of knowledge." Once you know something, your brain literally can't comprehend how that knowledge could possibly not be obvious to anyone ever again. If they just showed how the trick was done then nobody would ever think it was a halfway decent illusion. By showing the illusion first it cements in the viewer's mind that "yes, this actually does work, and it actually looks pretty legit and difficult to guess."
That's just how brains work.
