The thing i see here is david and wim hoffs technique differ. David inhales quick and then lets air out the lungs, whereas Wims technique is the total opposite.
Good insight and David is truly inspiring. Just one remark, when someone drowns on a frozen lake and recover later there is no freezing involved and therefore no ice crystals causing cell damage. That's one of the main problems in the current cryopreservation techniques. What we could learn from his amazing physiology may someday help develop stasis technology for keeping patients in stable conditions during transport or in the operation table or even trough long space travels. Yeah, a lot of people don’t consider that chokeholds block the carotid artery, meaning that oxygenated BLOOD will not reach the brain. That will put someone out very quick, no matter how long they can hold their breath (because blood is still able to flow). Then again, maybe we are all being too literal about your fun comment and need to just enjoy the humor that you have presented. :)
I tried the breathing technique and it blew my mind, my whole life I’ve never held my breathe for even 40-50 seconds and I just held it for 120 seconds on my first try 🤯
That breathing technique is actually exactly what Wim Hof teaches as well. With the cold endurance and breathing endurance feats David has achieved, he should definitely meet with Wim Hof since they've both been basically exploring this same undiscovered field.
Michael Young those kids are medical anomalies and they arent holding their breath... they drown but the cold temperatures slow the body down and prolong the window they can be resuscitated. We do this on purpose now on cardiac arrest patients... it’s called Arctic Sun.
As a pilot that occasionally has to go high altitude for going over weather, I worry about hypoxia quite a bit; I would love to have this technique published to help pilots who are in emergency situations. That’s awesome he studied this!

I drowned as a kid, and yes it was euphoric. Not in a rush but an absolute calm. I can't describe it, it was the best feeling ever after i stopped thrashing, abd before I blacked out
So, in anesthesia school right now, and we use similar principles. When we're about to put a person under and place a breathing device, we pre-oxygenate with 100% in until they're breathing at least 80% oxygen out. If they're a healthy adult, that gives us about 8-9 minutes of the patient not breathing at all of buffer time before their oxygen levels start dropping to a concerning level.
Funny thing that no so long I tried Wim Hoff breathing technique. First try - 2 minutes, after only one week doing it - I easy hold my breath almost 4 minutes. And I’m a smoker for the last 12 years... this really works! And the feeling you get after doing it - the best ever, like you born new again

My best underwater breath hold was 3:46. I was in the pool every day for 17 months. Hats off to David. I watched the whole thing...if there was a “trick” I can’t figure it out.
The “trick” is it’s a pure oxygen breath hold meaning they inhale pure o2 before the attempt making it much easier. The world record currently for pure o2 hold is 24:37 and normal o2 is 11:34. So David could probably do a 8:30 hold on normal o2
I tried this trick about 20 years ago when I was just a kid. Hyperventilated for 1 minute straight (very difficult to do, I got pins and needles in my TEETH), and then held my breath for 4 minutes. It was very easy, and I only stopped because I was scared. I could've kept going. I wonder how much brain damage I gave myself.

Inhale fully through the nose and exhale slowly, repeat 30 times, after 30 expel all oxygen from your lungs and hold it as long you can, then take huge breath in and hold that for 15 seconds. Do three or 4 sets of that, at the end of it you get a euphoric feeling along with the benefits that deep breathing brings.

Holding your breathe is basically holding the air in your lungs, but chokehold is a different story it blocks the oxygen and blood supply..

He's pretty much describing whim hoff breathing technique. Inhale fully through the nose and exhale slowly, repeat 30 times, after 30 expel all oxygen from your lungs and hold it as long you can, then take huge breath in and hold that for 15 seconds. Do three or 4 sets of that, at the end of it you get a euphoric feeling along with the benefits that deep breathing brings.
