    I will NEVER understand why people complain about the half pans not being glued down. You don’t want them glued down. Then you cannot change them. You also couldn’t read that pigment info on the side. And the biggest annoyance is when y’all turn the palette over and say “see they just fall out” OF COURSE THEY FELL OUT YOUR TURNED IN UPSIDE-DOWN FOR NO REASON!! No one EVER turns their palette upside down while PAINTING!!! It’s just absurd to me to gripe about that. That’s all for now....

    • @bugeyedmonster2
      @bugeyedmonster2 4 года назад +5

      Why don't they just use sticky tac to get the pans to stay in? (And I don't mean to turn mine upside down, but it would sometimes happen when I would be running to catch the bus.
      I also have cats, and those darned cats knocked my Le Sennilier La Petite Aquarelle wood box over once, which caused the pans to fall out of their places.

      I slip in small piece of paper while putting the half pans in, it works perfectly to hold down some pans that won’t settle in the palette!

      @@bugeyedmonster2 The solid paints, and the pans, will eventually all stick down as you use the paint, and the paint spills over the sides and dries. To loosen the pans, drip a little water down the edge, the paint holding it down will dissolve, and you can pull the pan out.

      I use a touch of hot glue from a glue gun just to secure the pan to the case. The pan will still pop out given a little pressure. When it comes to the paint block itself a little water dabbed around the block will stabilize it.
      It's just a simple thing that I do.

      Your clearly not a plein air painter, your palette may well be turned on the side upside down and which ever direction one can imagine. Especially "Travel" Palettes which odly enough most people tend to use mainly at home. Magnets are the key word, such as the half pans from holbein. ;)

    Finally, someone who correctly pronounces Schmincke :-).
    Many people pronounce the e exactly like the i in Schmincke, which sounds pretty weird.

      I found this blog post which summarizes it pretty well and an article from a local UK newspaper. Apparently W&N moved production of Cotman paints from UK to France in around 2011-12 and then moved the production to China a few years later (est. ~2014). Not sure is the quality of the paints suffered at all when the manufacturing moved. I couldn't really find too many people complaining about it online so maybe there isn't a big difference in the quality.

      I bought 45 half pan set that marked "made in China", and a travel bag set marked "made in England" from different sellers on ebay. I guess the travel set is the older version, and the studio half pan is the new version.

    Just as a side note: Schmincke Horadam paints contain oxgall while the Schmincke Akademie paints do not. Oxgall has a huge impact on wetability and flow :)

    • @Drumaier
      @Drumaier 4 года назад +3

      Is oxgall expensive or something? i ask because one of the main differences i keep noticing in artist grade watercolors seems to be that "they move", while student grade van gogh, akademie, Cotman) they seem to be a lot more inert. So given the pigmentation is barely noticeably and pro paints costs A LOT more than student, i can only think about the binders and "movers" of the paints being the reason of the extra costs. Then again, form Holbein are the best of the best, and they do not use oxgall. I'd love to know the reason of the price difference. Maybe mostly marketing? or maybe it is that pro versions are finer milled so is most costly? In any case, it seems that pigment concentration per se is not such a decisive factor as most of us tend to think.

      @@Drumaier bump, hopefully someone will answer xD

    • @ellaacuarela
      @ellaacuarela  4 года назад +4

      Hi Drumaier! In my humble opinion I think there are a few reasons for this.
      1. Paints that have high dispersion (i.e. they 'move around' a lot) can be challenging to use for people who are beginning to learn watercolor. Maybe the manufacturers did some market research and they are taking this into consideration to appeal to beginners.
      2. To your point, oxgall is not incredibly expensive but it is not cheap either. It could certainly be more expensive than chalky fillers. In order to keep costs lower for Student grade paints that are manufactured at a mass scale they probably have to reduce costs wherever they can. Removing Oxgall is probably one of those savings that allows them to price lower.
      3. Western vs. Easter watercolor techniques differ a lot. Dispersion seems to be more valued in Western watercolors. Hence Eastern watercolors tend to be designed to have less dispersion (i.e. use less or no Oxgall) regardless if they are Student grade or Artist grade.
      4. Each manufacturer wants to differentiate their product so they choose different formulas to create paints with different characteristics to appeal to different consumer groups. This could mean more or less Oxgall in the formula.
      Sorry for the long-winded answer but hope it helps to clarify some of your doubts. :)

    I have a set of 24 Academie half pan and loved it. The colors are vibrant and layers very well. I also have a set of 36 Horadam which are amazing performers. But I find myself use Akademie more often 'cause the tin size. 36 set are in a 48 tin/metal box which is double the size of the 24 box. In US, Cotman is more available than Akademie. I bought mine while traveling too.

I don't know if I have the student grade Schminke or the pro ones. Does't matter they are great for my needs. I am not a professional artist but I like quality

    I bought a W&N Cotman travel bag way back when I used to take the bus in the 90s, here in Dallas TX. See, our transit system then really suked. Some buses only came around once every 45 minutes to an hour. So this bag was great. I did so many little sketches and half finished watercolors while waiting for the bus.
    PS the 14 half pan set has changed. I bought another one recently (like in the 00s somewhere.) The old one has either changed color a bit, or it was a different off-white. The new one is sort of an Arctic white. Also, the spots for the W&N half pans are a bit different. The newer one has pan spots with a bit of a 'rudder', and generic half pans don't fit. But they will fit in the older one. (I had some Daniel Smith tube paints I bought on sale, and put them in pans.)
    Also, my set is definitely earlier, as it didn't have the foldable water pot thing, or the Cotman pad. It came with watercolor postcards. So they made some changes somewhere.

    It was so interesting to watch, and to see an old W&N set as that one, i never noticed that they had lightfast raitings on the paper wrap until i checked on my cotman wrapers, the only recommendation i can give is that after a while the constant 'um' , 'uh', got me distracted from the content of your video. I think it would help a lot to do a script or something to help you out with it. And shorten the time lapse, i couldn't help but skip times because it took way to much time to get to what got me interested. I'm not trying to be rude, and i apologize if this comes as rude.
