In this video, I’ll be covering Goten and Trunks, but not only their ages. You see, a big controversy over the course of Dragon Ball Super was the lack of updating heights and designs for Goten and Trunks. So we will also be discussing their unchanging designs and heights - as well as why that may or may not make sense.

Well Goku didn’t grow till he was 19 as he was 13 in dragonball and only developed after training with Kami
*edit* Nevermind he explained it. Closest thing I can really say is that Goten might have taken a majority of Goku traits and as such has slower aging. There also could be that Goten body isn’t suppose to naturally grow that tall

Thats Probably it. That environment forced Trunks to develop earlier. Bc he was in an apocalyptic war time line and had to defend himself. Just like real life the more you use your muscles. The better nutrition you have your more likely to grow bigger and taller
Inr, things are so much differently done in super, things that I wish stayed the same and some I guess had to happen. This is one of the things that should have stayed the same.

DBS Trunks should already have the same appearance as 'Future Trunks in training'.
The current Moro arc should be centered around them as well, instead of Goku and Vegeta, whom are way too strong. It feels extremely forced to pull even stronger new characters out of nowhere. If Trunks and Goten were the protagonists, it would make sense because they're still weak, have room for development.
Only thing is that i hope they don't just use them as body guards for 17's Island when they need to get more fire power
But yes i to agree that goku and vegeta got way too strong too fast, even Gohan as well, that was my main issue with super... I think they should have slowed down their progression, have them spend more time learning God ki... And have them learn about ssjgss through black, who would use rose against them while so far all they knew about was God. Then they would train to get blue
You can so easily have Goku and Vegeta training on Beerus' planet, and have some of the weaker characters get caught up in something with no way of contacting them. Have some coming of age story stuff for Goten and Trunks, maybe get some other characters involved too
Though Moro is not exactly "stronger" than Goku or Vegeta, and you should know that if you're following the manga.
Trunks and goten are not ready for a Moro level villian they wouldn't have the strength or experience. I can see some of the Z fighters getting stronger by being in the galactic patrol.

So, in old Japanese culture everyone would celebrate "becoming one year older" on the same day, the start of the year. So, Goten is only 6 years and x months old at the time of the Tournament or he is "6 turning 7", but if using that old system he is "Going through his 7th year of life" or he is "7 years"
That's the only way I could see this age problem making any sense.

This one bugs me the most of all of them lol. It honestly bugs me even more after watching this than I thought it would. I mean, they already had a canon version for Trunks at this age and they just didn't use it? WTF is that? lol. Great videos and series, so thanks for doing these.
Because then they would have to age up goten and they're too lazy to do that because goten and trunks aren't popular characters and since Toei animation is full of cash grabbers they won't bother to make a new design

so... essentially the design team never really thought about updating goten and trunks' design, despite adjusting the years and such. to be fair, they havn't been major players at all and havn't gotten much focus. but still, keeping them looking like young kids implies less time passing then what actually has. honestly, the best way to show that time HAS passed would be to have goten and trunks look their age.
i feel like either the writers/artists are being lazy and don't want to redesign them, OR they don't want to change the characters at all and are keeping them little kids for either comedy aspects or to keep it like Dragon Ball Z, despite the fact they should be teens by now.
The only interesting theory I've found to explain this is that Saiyans grow based on the environment they need to adapt to, like how future Trunks grew up in constant danger and had to fight for his life every day so his body evolved much faster, while Goten and Present trunks have had pretty posh lives. Still doesn't explain why they don't grow at all but still

The old Broly movie was future trunks which was better and cooler.
Another way to show their aging makes no sense is with Marron. She isn't a Saiyan at all, so you can't even use the already flimsy excuse of Saiyan growth rates are different with her. The only reason Goten, Trunks, and Marron are suffering from Ash Ketchum Syndrome is because the writers don't find them important enough to keep updated and it shows all throughout Super. They can't even be bothered to make sure Future Trunks' hair color matches his younger counterpart for fuck's sake.

Off topic, but on the subject of Saiyan hybrids, one thing I miss is Gohan's tail.
Imagine how sweet it would've been if just before the Tournament of Power, when Vegeta first held Bulla, we saw a blue fuzzy tail wrap itself around Vegeta's arm.
Just Saiyan.
And yeah, I hope they re-introduce Tarble at some point.
Maybe Vegeta can have him as a plus-one when he finally gets round to visiting Universe 6 Sadala.

I think the main reason they haven't updated trunks design is that toriyama doesn't want people to get current trunk confused with future trunks (dispite the fact they are literally the same person).
But yeah I would really love to see a more grown up goten trunks and gotenks

Jesus Christ watching this video made me realise how close everything in Super is. In Z there were a few years between every main threat but in Super all they get is like a month or 2. What did the Z fighters do to deserve this lol.

I have a head canon that Saiyans grow progressively until they reach a certain height, then grow in massive spurts. Goku had his first growth spurt in the three years between Tenkaichi Budokais, then his second spurt while training with Kami. Gohan had his first spurt in the hyperbolic time chamber, then the second during the 7 year time skip. Trunks and Goten have yet to have their first spurt, and future Trunks aged faster as a defense mechanism due to being in constant danger.
Gohan is noticeably taller on Namek then he was when Raditz kidnapped him tho.
Future Trunks and Kid Trunks looking different at the same age can be explained pretty easily. Everyone is under the assumption that Future and Kid Trunks are the same being, but most likely they are not. They have the same parents and name but their genetic makeup is most likely different. They are more like brothers that have the same name. My reason for thinking this is that because Future Trunks altered the timeline before he was conceived, that might have caused things to happen ever so slightly differently. This results in the date of the conception of Kid Trunks being different to Future Trunks, and that could mean that a different sperms fertilized and/or egg were involved in the process, meaning that Future Trunks and Kid Trunks are genetically different. This would help explain how Kid Trunks got SSJ to easily as a child and why their bodies grow at a different rate. We can even use that now they have canonically different hair colour as support for this explanation.

Vegeta once stated that saiyans age differently, so that they can preserve their bodys to be in prime state when needed.
Goten and trunks (fusioned) where even a decent match against buu. maybe their biological need to grow their bodys into its next shape of age, has been stalled because they were in no need of any more power than they already had - keeping their growth preserved for a longer time so that their saiyan bodys may last longer overall.
With future trunks having done less training, his body needed to grow further just to gain more power to stand up to all of the power around him. This caused him to age relatively fast.
Or like with gohan - no training at all gave him a relatively normal aging process. But then all of a sudden his surroundings changed, he had to train to stay a decent match for the people around him and even then he couldnt do much against piccolo, freeza, the androids and even cell. But his body rapidly aged and turned into its teen form at the age of only 10/11.
Saiyans bodys might age out if necessity, but also preserve their aging by not having any need to do so.

The problem with this is that before Goku Saiyans never trained. They enjoyed fighting and getting stronger but training was something they just didn't do, it's why
Vegeta was so shocked that Goku, who a year ago couldn't handle Raditz, is now strong enough to rival him. The idea that someone could get stronger through hard work and determination like that was a foreign concept to him. Which means that all Saiyans before Goku should have aged extremely slowly, since they were always out and about, yet we have no evidence of that happening.
@@MrEffectfilms they did go on rampaging tours across different planets all over space. So they did need some strength, wich might have been achieved trough their weird aging process. Like being stuck in one of their spacepods for a year or so to travel to a different planet, might have caused their bodys to preserve themselves.
For instance, vegeta looked way younger than goku when he first arrived to earth, while he was actually ment to be older.

That's similar to my theory. In a nutshell, I think that maybe Saiyans reach physical maturity faster based on training and battles. Goten, Trunks, and even Goku didn't have the kind of training and battles that Gohan and Future Trunks did.
Gohan, for example, way fighting and training with guys way above his power level from the age of 4. Goku trained and fought a lot as a kid, but with guys with power levels in the hundreds. Gohan and Future Trunks were fighting and training with guys with power levels in the millions! Goten and Present Trunks only seriously fought and trained at that level briefly to face Buu, and even then they relied mostly on fusion.

If Chichi was pregnant with Goten in either late 766 or early 767, why the hell didn't her pregnancy show? Throughout her entire appearance between Goku getting his heart virus and the Cell Games, she still had her slender frame. I may be a guy but even I know pregnancy should have shown by then.
I always assumed she got pregnant during the 9 day wait for the Cell games. I mean a lot can happen in 9 days....Go for 10.

I don't wanna give Toyotaro an excuse, but the case could be made that future Trunks and Gohan are both saiyans that were thrown (as most non hybrid saiyans are) into battlefield and harsh situations since a really young age and that's why they grew faster. Gotenks and present Trunks live a more pacific life compared to them and that's why they get to be in their kid state for a longer period of time. I seriously don't know, but that could be an half assed explanation.

Grelly_Chan Well Goku during the King Piccolo arc was 15 due to his 3 year training with Kami. And he looked the same. Only more fit than before. You have to remember, Saiyans don’t physically age like humans do. They can live longer than humans and have longer lasting youth.

I have 1 theory as to why future Trunks looks older than his present counterpart. Maybe young saiyans can age faster when necessary. Because of the state of the future timeline Trunk's body aged faster so he could reach his pinnacle as an effective fighter. Obviously there is no proof for such a claim but it's the best in-universe explanation I got.

I have two theories:
• Kid Trunks has a growth spurt on the way in ‘Dragon Ball Super’, as the main timeline’s Tournament of Power took place in the same year as Gohan’s death in Future Trunks’ timeline.
• As stress can accelerate ageing, it’s possible that Future Trunks had his growth spurts early due to growing up in an apocalyptic war zone. Kid Trunks might just grow slowly the way Goku did, due to living in a carefree environment.

Only difference between Vegeta and Gohan was the hairline, Goten had a slanted version of Gohan's hair. But I do agree on changing his end of Z hairstyle, didn't really like it neither.

@@BrokeBot except Gohan didn't train at all until he was 4, and took pretty long breaks too, like he didn't train at all the entire year Goku was gone following the Namek arc. But by the time Cell comes around the kid looks like he's 15 despite only being 11.
Goten and Trunks didn't change much because Toriyama admittedly says he doesn't fully remember everything before the Super series. He tried to give android 18 pink hair because he thought that was the color untill someone mentioned and questioned why. All the half sayians honestly have a lack luster story and character development of their own. Gohan went from being the strongest sayian to border line a meme before memes were a thing.

It’s really the lack of progress in the appearance that doesn’t make much sense. With Goku as a precedent, you can have them be at least 15 and still look basically like children, but you also have to at least make it clear that they look older. Kid Goku didn’t just sprout from his 12 year old self to his adult self at the end of Dragon Ball. They gave him a visible growth spurt in between all of that when you saw him at 15, where he was drawn much taller, with slightly different proportions that also benefited the changing tone for the fight sequences, and his face started to be drawn ever so slightly more mature. We’re being led to think Goten and Trunks are just going to sprout up to their adult looking teen selves in a matter of a few years at this point from the same height they were when they were like… 6 and 7, on top of the fact that Goten keeps visibly shrinking from time to time? That’s ridiculous.
To make things more confusing the Android’s attack on May 12th, the cell games are on May 26th, The World Martial Arts Tournament is always held on the May 7th. Meaning even if Goten’s birthday is May 7, Goku still should have been aware of Goten.

The thing is, the dont technically change in physical appearance because they are half-saiyans. I'm sure if its the same as full-blooded saiyans, but it's at least half that. Saiyans lose their youth at 80, so half-saiyans would probably be about 50 or 60.

Awesome video man! This has driven me nuts for the longest time, having a clear comparison between 2 versions of Trunks at the same age had me laughing too hard...
I hope that if and when super returns, there will be an episode where trunks and goten wake up with a sudden growthspurt so trunks looks like his history of trunks equilivant and goten looks a year younger than that.
