The Image: I love the ritual, romance and repetition as a disguised Lancelot vanquishes all knights at the tournament (thus not keeping his shameful tryst with Guinevere) - but is recognised by Gawain and Arthur by his movements - theaestheticof... - and his horse. (Sad, the beautiful youth Gawain played by Humbert Balsan [middle - theaestheticof...] died by his own hand in 2005- by then a well known producer)

An exemplary illustration of how Bresson thwarts dramatic expectation, in the repeated shots focusing on the horses' hooves while omitting most of the riders' bodies from the frame. The repetition of composition and sound also deliberately eschews conventional film practice, showing a kind of kinship with the structuralist films being made in North America around this same time.

Yes, Bresson once said something like, "show image and show sound - but not at the same time." - Bresson is almost unique in his rigor and his stubborn refusal to throw us a ball so to speak! He's a bit 'Ivory Tower' in that respect don't you think? (Thank God!)

@@AestheticOfTheImage I believe the only major European filmmaker who registers as more rigorous in frustrating conventional spectatorship is Bresson's disciple Jean-Marie Straub (who of course consistently collaborated with Danièle Huillet).
