Sir, I appreciate your videos. May I suggest that you use the new cheap, thin Chinese snap lids for this purpose, as they are So thin as to be questionably functional for canning purposes. They will be much easier to punch.

@@SporenSprout❤ thank you so much! I decided to order the injection ports but I was mostly concerned about the mocropore tape but would that then eliminate the need to unscrew the lids when under pressure?

I've mostly seen the air exchange hole filled with polyfill. Is paper tape alright too? On shroomery a few users were saying micropore tape here is much worse than polyfill.
I’ve made a very large number of liquid cultures like this and I’ve never had a problem. 2 pieces of 3M tape works everytime. Just make sure to keep the jar high off the ground. You don’t want a bunch of dust settling on the lid. You can wrap a coffee filter around the lid for extra dust protection if your room is dusty. The cool part about this hobby is that you can do whatever works for you, so feel free to experiment with whatever is easiest for you to access.
Yeah I would use 2-4 pieces. It does prevent contamination especially if you can keep it from getting wet and prevent dust from landing on the lid over time. If you want more security you should use waterproof synthetic filter discs instead.
Why red RTV and not gray. I’ve seen both but wasn’t sure if it was temp related. I’ve got a few tube of the gray that are unopened and all ready paid for by some other project
Grey RTV has higher density when cured for higher vibration resistance and tight tolerance applications. Red RTV is for exhaust and high heat applications. Gray will probably work fine but I have not used it.
If you wanted to get crazy, you can just inoculate through a hole covered with micropore tape and then just put another layer of tape over the hole very very fast and in a clean environment.
They take 2-3 hours to dry but as soon as the Rtv is not sticky anymore you can use them and the pressure cooker will finish solidifying the Rtv. They hold up very well, and you can add more than one injection port if you want in the future.
My surface is perfectly clean (cleaned with acetone) but the silicone peels right off after drying... this is useless. Going back to self adhesive injection ports... much easier to apply and stays on.
@@SporenSprout How? From what I read, silicone doens't stick to metal or plastic. I have tried, sanding the surface, clean the surface etc. It still peels off just by pickig it with finger nail.
Hey spore! My spots of silicone are no longer sticky but they still smell really strongly; will the grains be safe? I put the lids on the jars to carry through to another and when I took them off it smelt really really strong. Just wanted to check before putting my grains in the pc!
When I squeeze out the silicone, the lid is set on top of a lid ring and that’s where it cures for around 4 hours and then can be pressure cooked. If you mean that you let the silicone cure while set on top of a jar, the bottom silicone probably is still wet because no air got to it. The smell of silicone isn’t a big deal so I wouldn’t worry about it.
Do u shake and break with this method? Doing my first inoculation tomorrow and I read somewhere that if u shake the jars, if any of the grains touch the microtape it could potentially cause contamination. Let me know what ya think!

After the silicon drys it’s ready to go. Sometimes a tiny piece of silicon will get stuck in the needle when injecting and end up inside your liquid culture. @@sethhaze1610 no problem! The silicone will usually withstand around 6-10 injections before becoming compromised. It’s easy to replace the silicone or dispose of the lid entirely if it starts to rust. I’ve been using these lids religiously for years and I love them, good luck!
