Happy Sunday, Dear Sewing Friends! I am so happy to be here today with another sewing + drafting tutorial! Yay! This is easy and so versatile, I really love it! Planning to make a few more already. :)
Learning how to draft my own patterns is one of the best skills I've learned from your tutorials! Before, I would never have dreamed I could do it, but it's just finding some measurements and drawing some lines! It makes me feel like a designer!
Pat, you made my day!!! I am so incredibly happy for you - seriously! And you are exactly right - just a few lines, all it takes is to understand how our body would look like on a drafting paper - and that's it! :)
This is exactly the style I need. My upper arm is large due to lymphedema and finding tops with sleeves that aren’t restrictive is difficult. I’ll let you know how it finishes out. Always enjoy your instructions.
I think I can handle this! My mom could look at a garment picture and make it, I didn't inherit this anility but one if my susters did! Thank you for this wonderful tutorial!
What a pretty and comfortable top! I just want to suggest for any plus size people that you might want to measure your biceps to find the length of the arm hole. Many plus sized people have generous biceps that might not fit through a hole the way Alisa has drafted hers. It's ok to alter patterns and drafting methods to suit different body types and we shouldn't expect any particular sewing teacher to know exactly what will work for every body type. I have the perfect fabric for this top, I'm putting it on my project list. Thanks Alisa!
Love to watch you explain the drafting of a garment and then sew it on the serger. I'm new to drafting a pattern and sewing on a serger. Please keep doing the sew along. Pittsburgh, PA
Thank you so much! Made your turtleneck sweater with a few modifications because I have broad shoulders and the bodice ends up being way to wide for me, but I love the dropped shoulder look! Anyways, it came out really good! This Bretton top will definitely be my next project! Also my sewing buddy looks just like your sewing buddy! We have twin Maine Coons!
Very nice, it looks great on you. I’ve seen other requests for a v-neck demo, I would like that also. I think it’s amazing how you draft your own pattern. 🤗
I have a pattern like this, but it didn't fit right after sewing it. I'm going to try to draft my own and see how much better it will fit! Thanks for sharing 😊
It is easy! :) do a trial version first (ALWAYS, even with store bought patterns) to see how you like it, you can always decrease the width of it. It is basically a shaped rectangle with a sleeve! You can do it :)
I love u buy your fabric from fabric mart. I am really going to try hard to make that top. I wanted to know sometime in the future. Will you be making anything with zippers? Its way u teach us. I feel I can do anything...
Shelley - absolutely! Zippers are coming, just wanted to get some of the comfy stuff first done, I have a few things planned with a zipper for next month :) by the way Shelley, I had quite a few ladies make this top and send me pictures - all turned out so cute and well done, so I can't wait for you to make one as well! :) Happy to help :)
Love this tut. Can you please share where you source your knit/jersey fabric? Joann doesn’t have a wide variety of designs and kinda pricey to spend on a t-shirt.
Hello hello! So quite a few knits that I have used are from Fabric Mart.com when I show the labels - it might seem a little pricey, but I only shop there when they have discounts, so that is not the final price that you would see on a label, otherwise it is kind of pricey. Also... Surprisingly, I love hobby lobby for buying knits for t shirts! I hope this helps!
Great tutorial! I have purchased a beige and black strip tee shirt fabric. Do you have a measurement for making a boat neck using this pattern? Thank you again
Terry, I want to encourage you think about it for a moment - what is a boat neck? How is it different from round neck? If you go from round neck to boat neck what adjustments do you need to make? You don't need a tutorial for it - practice on a scrap fabric to see what width and depth of a boat neck you like and you will be good to go.
Great video. Way off topic, but, since you have a child, have you ever made Butterick B5019 and if you have: 1. How does the dress close in the front; 2. How do you size the hat; and 3. Is it possible to change the brim of the hat and make it wider (for red haired babies? The young families in my life are all having babies. It is a boom. I've not made clothes for children. I'm having a moment of panic.
Grace, welcome! Make the pattern and lay it on the floor and measure with a measuring tape how much you would need. You can also take the patter with you to the store during non-busy hours and see how much you would need as the unroll the fold of fabric.

Can i use non stretch material to make this top?
Love your videos as always!! 😍🥰❤
Very helpfull too!
Short answer - no, long answer- yes, you can if you use appropriate ease so that you can get it in the garment and actually move in it.
