  • Barry Sheene was a hero of motorcycle racing. A two-time 500cc World Champion, his name is stamped on motorcycle history - a smiling, friendly man who had just one speed on a bike: fast.
Sadly Sheene passed away in March 2003, but in September 2002 he was at Goodwood aboard the no.7 500cc Manx Norton in the Lennox Cup, and what a show he, and four of the other runners, put on for the crowd.

    ***
Barry’s brilliance saw him take his third win in three consecutive years, taking the chequered flag ahead of Wayne Gardner by just 0.156 seconds.
His passing led to the Lennox Cup being renamed the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy. He will always be remembered at Goodwood for brilliant battles just like this.
No.7 is two-time 500cc World Champion Barry Sheene, and no.1 is one-time 500cc World Champion Wayne Gardner. Their last lap fight culminated in a photo finish with the pair separated by 0.156 seconds
Barry Steven Frank Sheene MBE (11 September 1950 - 10 March 2003) was a British professional motorcycle racer. He competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing and was a two-time world champion, winning consecutive 500cc titles in 1976 and 1977.
Sheene's 1977 title remained as Britain's last solo motorcycle world championship until Danny Kent in 2015 in the Moto3 category.
After a racing career stretching from 1968 to 1984 he retired from competition and relocated to Australia, working as a motorsport commentator and property developer.
Sheene became involved in historic motorcycle racing, often returning to England to race at Donington Park. Sheene competed in his last UK race at the Goodwood Revival in 2002. He was also chosen to run with the Queen's Baton in the run-up to the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England.
The Young Girl who is seen pushing the restored bike with Fred Walmsley at 40:20 is non other than the little baby seen in archived footage of Barry Sheene at 45:24 in the Goodwood Paddocks 24 years later!
Special Thank you from Fred Walmsley to Jay Collins, Katy Walmsley, Jacqueline Walmsley, Rob Wilson and Daniel Oxford for supporting and helping this restoration project.

What a great video. My young son and I were at the MotoGP gp at Donnington that year. I saw Barry race at the transatlantic races in the late 70s but was amazed he was still winning races against much younger riders at that time in his career …..a true racer, personality, brilliant character and biking superstar ….I miss him., The bike you gave him to win on is a real tribute to your engineering skills….be proud.

I shook hands with Barry in the infield at Malory Park when I was ten years old, it was still grass then and they were working out of gazebo tents. I turned around and he was riding side saddle towards me along the grass, as he got off the bike, he smiled and shook my hand, I was so proud to have been there, my folks couldn’t shut me up all day. God bless you Barry Sheene, a showman, a gentleman and a bloody good rider. Rest in peace sir.

Wow that was something special, if I owned that bike it would be in my living room. I would love to parade it at CRMC meetings. Classic bikes are wonderful things, I have raced a few of them. ( Not Manx’s unfortunately)This also reminded me of the CRMC meeting at Brands in 88 or 89 when I had the honour of warming up a Honda 6….. I am sure the young lady warming up that Manx has the same feelings. Well done Fred you are a legend.

this brings back so many memories I was at Donnington Park in 2002 to watch Moto GB with Valentino Rossi and when all the main racing had finished all the other guys started going back to camp to start finishing packing up to head back home, we had been there all weekend but as soon I saw barry i thought I'm not going anywhere until I had seen barry race, he obviously won the race and when he did his lap of honour helmetless of which today he would probably be fined, it brought memories back of the transatlantlantic races with the Americans and everybody cheering him as world champion and although he did the parade lap after it also seemed sad to see the circuit emptying at the same time and at the time I thought to myself how times change when i did get to leave Donnington I couldn't get out for ages I was just stuck there for ages no wonder the others scarpered early but I wasn't to know that it would be one of his last races so no regrets, great video I wonder how many of your neighbours know the history involved with that bike

I watched Barry at Donnington in 2002 win on the Walmsley Manx. I first saw him race at, if memory serves, Brands Hatch at the tender age of 17 in 1974. I remember how he lit up the world of M/C racing through the seventies and was appalled when he had the big off at Daytona in ‘75 and then in ‘82 at Silverstone. A very talented racer, outside of his television persona I learned he could be very demanding however, he had a prodigeous talent and as someone who has attempted to race motorcycles when I was younger, I have always been envious of his superb ability. As to Mr Walmsley, I am well aware of his reputation but my experience lies more with factory Hondas than anything else.
