@@Dsrgreyy I really like VIII. I'm also playing the remastered version right now. I have a love/hate relationship with the junction system and love the characters. But overall it's not on the same level as the four most beloved titles, which are in my opinion really close to each other. That absolutely doesn't mean that VIII is a bad game or as bad as some fans make it seem to be. I put it in that very solid middle ground of good Final Fantasies with the likes of IV, X or XII. Those are good Final Fantasies and awesome games that show a certain high level of quality. And VIII might even be on top of them, but sadly the story is a mess. It's a beautiful mess at times and maybe I'm just too stupid to realize the genius behind it. But there is just so much uncalled for stuff that I find questionable and it's hard to make out a coherent theme in it.
I'm so GLAD to see everybody commenting that X should be way higher. The gameplay was fantastic, the story so well-written, the music TO DIE FOR. I've easily spent more than 140 hours on that game and would gladly pick it up again anytime.
without my personal biases... (ive played FF 5 - 7 remake...minus 14 and the stupid spinoff sequels) the pound for pound best are 9, 12, and 7. I would put 15 on there...but the game was just tooooo easy.
I thought I was the only one who loved FFXII. That game is awesome... I spent more than 200 hours to finish it and explore the huuuuuge world it contains.
I will never get tired of XII. I played it on ps2 and fell inlove with it ever since... I was so ecstatic when it got released on PS4 and now I'm planning to get it on Switch too~ I know some people don't like the battle system but one of the reasons I love it was becuase of the Gambit system and the license boards~ I could grind LP for hours 😂
I played FF 9 recently. I'm 24 and didn't think I could emerge so much in its world and beautiful story. It just amazed me. It definetely needs a remake.
9 is so damn good! 10 is my favorite... probably because of where I was in my life when I first played it. It has heavy nostalgia for me. But honestly I think 9 is the best.
X should be way higher on this list, just saying. I respect and understand others may have their biases but the story writing and gameplay is astounding.
My Top 5 are 7, 9, 6, 8 and 10. But only because i never played the other Titles longer then 1 Hour. FF10 has good and maybe the best Gameplay when it comes to the fights, but the rest is just not my thing, i disliked most of the Characters, i didnt liked the Story, so little big Summons, aynoing mini Game and just overall very meh, never finished the whole Game. And dont get me started at X-2 holy shit wtf was that? dropped it after 30 Minutes or so. But that said, every other Title beside these 5 is either to old or to too but be wirth playing (i personal dont count the Online FF as main title), maybe beside FF5, so it deserves the Top 5 Spot.
Agree, X behind XII sounds kind of a joke to me. XII on release was a nightmare to me, and i dislike completely the combat system. And i would put it even higher than IX because of the refined version of turn-base combats, more interesting and interactive summons and less kid style of art. But this is just my opinion. And XV's open world and main characters interactions deserve a little bit more, i can forgive the last episodes but the main villain was never charismatic enough for me and the DLC missions are an insult for a FF game. For me VII is just the best, the only thing i would add is Blitzball (God that **** was addictive as hell).
10 deserves it's ranking, it was a fine RPG but not a great FF game. For many people FFX was their first FF game so they hold it in higher placement than it should be. The linear aspect and terrible voice acting didn't help for me. The story felt like it tried too hard to set this love narrative between Tidus and Yuna. Though the music and cast of characters were some of my favs in any of the games there were too many things that bugged me about it. I think this list has it properly placed.
7 taught me how to overcome grief and move on with life despite losing loved ones and depression 8 showed me there is love and opportunity to live as long as we fight 9 captivated me with its beautifully dark fantasy and helped me through my own existential crisis like zidane. 10 was my very first FF game and it was breathtaking how a game covers real life situations (religious corruption cycle of spira), how to deal with sorrow and always believe in your loved ones. These games have been a lifesaving guide on how to become a hero in this world and pursue a well loved and lived life. Im forever grateful to have invested so many hours into these amazing games.
No hate n all but how exactly did 7 show you how to get over death. If Cloud wouldve gotten over Aeriths and Zacks death we wouldnt have had Advent Children.
@@parjol9064 FF7 at the end of the game when they're headed to the Northern Crater Cloud (on the airship) acknowledges her sacrifice and the reason why they should keep on going and not have her death be in vain. They would fight for the world Aerith wanted instead of letting Sephiroth have his way. Advent Children allowed Cloud to overcome his grief and accept their deaths entirely, but FF7 the game was coming to terms with it and ultimately making the choice of moving forward when there was literally no hope left. to do anything after meteor was summoned. They literally contemplated whether it was even possible to save the world, but they understood what they had to do when it was revealed that Aerith was succesful in her prayer and wouldn't let her sacrifice be for nothing.
@@parjol9064 also it was the first RPG when I was young where I really liked Aerith as a character, and the game LITERALLY kills her off. How is this literally not trying to get over her death? We love her and she dies, the game reminds you that even if characters die (or even people and family members or loved ones IRL) they will always live on in our hearts.
FFX should be in the top 5 imo. Yes, linear also breathtaking and absolutely revolutionary in terms of Graphics, sound, and character development for its time.

Teddyoeu I haven’t played 9-does it hold up well enough to be enjoyable today? I just started FF7 over yesterday to get myself pumped for the remake. But lord it hasn’t aged well! Still loving it though!
Ff7 remake was what introduced me to the series, I didn’t even want it in the first place since I had no reason to want to play it, I only got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription because there was nothing else to get. I do not regret it, and even though I’ve only played the remake and the original, I love it and I will probably play the other games in the future.
For me, the golden age of Final Fantasy games was the period between FFVI and FFX (incl. FFX-2), they're the ones that I go back to and play the most out of all of them and are some of the best turn based RPG's ever.

6 5 and 9 need a remaster with improved visuals and 8 should get remade completely the story isn’t great in 8 the visuals and combat isn’t either so if they remade it it would be hard for them to mess it up I just like the whole vibe of 8 and would love to see something like that

I'm kinda sad that FFX is so low. It's literally my favorite, right above FFVI. That being said, I understand that this is all subjective. Still hurts though :,(
My favorite FF game has been, for a while FFIX, closely followed by FFVI. But I also realize that FFIX, as a game, wasn't as accessible too many players as other FF games despite having a very "Bladerunneresque" story and some of the most colorful characters in the series.
Isky X is my favorite too I even have the Zanarkand Abe’s logo tattooed on me it will forever be my favorite game, is it flawed?yes, is the voice acting cringy ? Yes. But it doesn’t mean it’s not a good story. Too many people just play through once and don’t look into doing the side stuff which I think is pretty fun.
FF9 really is a dark horse #1 for me in the series. The character development in this entry is better than any other one in the series. Playing it back on the original console was spit into 4 discs. Multiple disks really made it feel like a great play with intermissions, or a great novel. Such a great piece of work.
Final Fantasy 6 aka Final Fantasy 3 in the USA, is my all-time favorite. My dad (rip) and I stood outside a K-mart when it launched. We were 3rd in line and there were only 5 copies :). I played it until the TV broke. lol

I really liked ffxv actually. I know a lot of people didn’t like it and felt that it could have been much better and I can get that, but I liked what we got anyway and it still remains of my favorites. Also I’m low key salty that ffx was so low 😅
15 is actually a pretty fantastic game, but everyone bashed it because they didn't release all of the content on release date which Is understandable. I bet if SquareEnix released the entire game as it is now (Royal Edition), AND THEN added more DLC it would of been on everyones radar for one of the best ff games for sure.
I have played every FF ever made when it was released (yup... I’m old). My favorites in the series have always been 4, 6, and 7. I even have the sheet music of “Terra’s Theme” tattooed on my arm... But even I admit that FF14 has earned its place in the pantheon of the greatest. Shadow bringers in scope, emotion, villain, characters, voice acting (god the voice acting!!), combat... just amazing. The villain in particular reminded me of Thanos in how relatable and complex he was. Emet-Selch should be in every conversation with Kefka and Sephiroth. I’m glad to see FF14 is getting the praise it deserves. It’s earned it. It really is one of the greatest now.
I’m happy to hear this honestly as well because if the rumors that the 14 team could be making FF16 are true at all then I can’t wait to see what’s coming.
i dont disagree, BUT.... after playing non stop since relaunch the great story wasnt enough to keep me engaged, the gear treadmill just made it like work instead of fun, just rinse and repeat battles and gear grew exhausting to me, expansions and patches is nothing more than the same over and over, it was fun as hell for a long time, but it got boring, to me at least
Ffx was the first ff game I ever played and made me fall in love with the series in general but the soundtrack still hasn’t been beat in my opinion. For that reason alone it should be higher on the list! It was also the very first rpg I played with actual voice acting and I know it’s aged, but seriously it was one of the very first so that shouldn’t count against it :/
@@SuperSupersoda I don't think the zodiac age would change your mind if you hated it originally. But it is a big improvement. Not only the game looks absolutely gorgeous but the new zodiac job system is a heaven sent compared to that old license board , and as someone who played it originally and replayed again recently with the zodiac age I'd say give it a try .You may find a new appreciation for it at a more mature age . I certainly did .
I really liked FF XIII. What can I say. I plated FF XV, I really love that one. And my favorite FF is XII. In my ps2 I played 180 hours. Now in my ps4 I am 3 trophies away from the platinum.
That's ironic because those 3 games are all very different in terms of battles system. Final Fantasy XII is almost a perfect game. Final Fantasy XII's writing and story is absolutely fantastic, and the voice acting is about as close to perfect as it gets. Every single environment in Final Fantasy XII is diverse. Final Fantasy XII has forests, jungles, deserts, prairies, plains, mountainous regions, sewers, cities, villages etc. It's great to see that there are actually other people out there that love that masterpiece.
Ff 12 gets mixed reviews but I loved it. I remember trying to beat yiamzat or whatever it’s called. Taken me a crazy amount of time to get there but gave up in the end. Always regretted it.
Forest Adamo its very typical for people who got late to the FF franchise to prefer newer titles as X. when its dislikes by the players who grew up on 7 or pre 7. the reason FF7 is so beloved by people is because for most people who played FF7 when it came out it was their first time experienced a game that was narrated in an immersive way, with characters players got emotionally attached to and a story told in a spectacular way. FF7 was the first FF that was a huge mainstream success in the West. Real OGs that also grew up playing Secret of Mana, Fire Emblem, Lufia and Terranigma to name a few had their first experience with FF6 or even FF4. But FF7 was the first game in 3D on 2D backgrounds and a 3D battle screen. It was revolutionary in 1997 to have a JRPG like that. In general, FF7 was the first time it felt like playing an actual story and not an arcade type video game. Thats why FF7 had a huge impact and people who played it until now. FFX was later in a time where narrative games were already common everywhere. FF13 came out just 2011 less than 10 years ago. Also in a time where emphasis on cinematic games and its plot line was a norm. My point is that for people who played FF7 in 97 when it released it was also sth thats never been seen and played like this before. Thats why players that knew Pre FF6, FF6 or FF7 werent impressed with FFX, at all. It was linear, had awkward voice acting, no proper towns, an unlikable protagonist and a level up system that was immature. But it also had a decent battle system, great summons, a beautiful musical score and of course Blitzball. Its not the worst FFX but most people who played FF since FF7 or pre FF7 would agree that FFX isnt in the top 5, not by a long shot. Thats what I mean. Sorry for the wall of text but this is hard to explain in a sentence for me.

FFX is my favorite for its story, atmosphere and music. I know this game has some flaws (just like every other FF btw). Don't think the opinion of the old heads is the only valid one, if someone think FFXIII is the best of All final fantasy then it's just his opinion. Like I said I discovered FF with Lightning returns (and this game is not in my top 3) so again what's your point ? I played FFVII before FFX. The old heads love FFVII because it was revolutionary but nowadays it is absolutely not the case so they are biased too
Final Fantasy XI was amazing. The most hardcore game I've ever played. No hand holding, an amazing job system, with fantastic flexibility with jobs and parties. Such amazing environments as well.
I actually really LOVED FFXV - the elemancy and open world was really cool! I’m currently playing FFX out of pure nostalgia because it reminds me of my childhood 😭 but, the battle system is so complex compared to XV. Either way the storyline on X is beyond amazing.
I'm so glad FF9 was on top 3!! For me its one of the best and most beautiful stories I've ever played, with a very lovable protagonist. And the music is magnificent ❤
@@ericforsyth i like viii a lot more than 10. i'd swap x with xiii personally. never understood how people think x is the best, i had some fun with the original version but they completely ruined the remaster for me by changing the face shapes for the worse unnessessarily and having the speech cut out frequently during character dialogue like it never did for me in the original.
I actually liked FF2 mechanics. It reminds me of RuneScape since the more you use a skill the more experience it gains. Plus if you roam too far out in the beginning you can encounter extremely high level monsters that one-shot you.
FF7 Remake was incredible and brought me back to my childhood. I liked FFX and FFXV but I was blown away by FFXII The Zodiac Age. Loved the story, soundtrack and gameplay. The world was so vast and a joy to explore. Truly epic. I agree with most that FFVI should definitely have a remake.
I'm going through it now. For me it has a very good character development and an interesting story. The difficult is there and gameplay is fun. I like it a little bit more than XV.

That's because the bulk of the game is directly taken from ff6. From the lead protagonists being a thief and a mysterious girl with ancient powers, to visiting a mage/magitech factory, to the names and roles of the villains. Emperor/Queen adopted parent, Kefka vs. Kuja manipulating them. and that's just the tip of the iceberg. They threw a fresh coat of paint on a previous success and called it new.
Final Fantasy 6 (or how I remember it as FF3) was my favorite FF game the characters and play value is so high you it’s like ff7 endgame quality and the weapons are great like ultimate weapon and ragnarok. I remember dual wielding those. But the opera scene is something I will never forget. And the music
13 is way underrated, also 12 is A GEM i'm glad to see it this high on the list, personally 12 is my #1 followed by X and 7. I didn't enjoy the plot of 15 so much so it's barely on my top10 but the game overall was very good
FFX should have been way higher, other than that pretty solid ranking IMO. I’ve played through each entree and I’d say 6,7,8,9,10,12, and 14 stand out as the best of the best. 4 never did much for me 🤷🏼♂️ 13 and 15 were absolute let downs, both had immense potential too 😥

Judging by your comment, you played it in English dubbed, which is 100% the worst dub to have ever been created by mankind. Do yourself a favor and re-play/watch the game/cut-scenes subbed and realize that FF10 indeed deserves a top 3 (if not nr.1) spot on the list. (especially Yuna's difference, the person who casted the dub voice-actress for Yuna deserves to be cut from society)
Final fantasy 15 was my first game in the series too and I loved it I don’t know why people try to act like the story isn’t good when I think it’s one of the best story’s I’ve ever experienced especially the royal edition

Final Fantasy IV is my favorite. I was almost 13 when I got it for Christmas. At the time, there was nothing else like it. It was a massive game. Games at that time did not tell stories like IV, or had soundtracks with so many songs, that sounded so amazing. My favorite system might be the Super Nintendo, and this was essentially Super Final Fantasy. VI might be a better game (both are excellent), as it expanded on IV and has so much more to offer. But for me, VI doesn’t have quite the same magic IV has.
Agree completely. I was about the same age when it came out, and I was a huge Dragon Warrior (i.e., Quest) fan before that game. The opening scene, with the airships, was so cinematic, it was like watching a movie... my friend and I couldn't believe it. I beat that game so many times as a kid. That game really stuck with me and is my favorite to this day... with VI and IX coming in close behind. I never was a big fan of the wholesale move away from fantasy to steampunk/sci-fi story telling with VII and VIII... I hope one day they give the high fantasy version of Final Fantasy a go again... but they probably won't, given how popular VII is

It was the first FF I played too! It was not the best for me but it always has a special place in my heart. “Theme of Love” and “Rydia” are definitely up there as the best music in the final fantasy series.
Nice to run into more fans of my age group. 4 was my second entry, and was one of my first SNES games. I started with the original. My first four NES games literally were Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior. 4 was also the first game I ever replayed just to speed run. Of the entire series, it rates 3rd for me, behind 6 in first and 7 in 2nd.
I still remember the gut wrenching feeling of the start of the second half of ff6, seeing the massive damage Kefka did to the world. and how much harder everyone's life had become. Then even after defeating Kefka, the world was still in ruins. the victory still had a feeling of sadness, and loss. such good story telling.
Yup, one of the villains that actually won. Not to mention Celes was in a coma for a year, during which Kefka went on an unchecked rampage across the world.
The testament to Kefka is that he was a better Kylo Ren than Kylo Ren was 21 years before Kylo Ren, and he was a better Thanos than Thanos was over a decade before Thanos. Kefka did the Throne Room scene in the last jedi correctly when he betrayed Emperor Gesthal, and immediately after, Kekfa destroyed everything and there was no quantum realm undo button.
Yeap Yeap. That's my hypest part in FFVI. After Kefka destroyed the world, you wake up as ceres alone and sees the destroyed world while looking for comrades. Damn that was epic and sad. I wish they Remake it too. That would be really epic.
Tbh I liked this game until that point when it got really boring and grindy. Every step was a battle and it wasn’t even required to get all your friends back. Wold of ruin literally ruined the game for me. Tbh I like ff4, 9, 12 and 10 more. Not just7
@@TonyKnight1208 Some see PS1/5th 6th gen ( or older ) games as ratchet while I still see groundbreaking with tons of character , and far more Innovative eras for games. Ex I still love 5th gen early 3D designs /pre-rendered backgrounds/spliced up CG cut-scenes/text-only or minimal dialogue a la Dark Souls/older sound quality over all of this spoiled glitz and glamour we have today. Most games today just age more harshly with less Innovation than oldschool in the areas I care about. FF7 holds up 23+ years later and never really lost being fun exactly how It was In 97'. You have to be a well versed gamer to look at the bigger picture and read between hype and generational changes to seperate the bs from the truth of your experiences. We all have preferences and all graphics are dated usually before a game Is ever released , given the long 3-4+ year dev cycle averages today. Modern games can be groundbreaking and timeless too js It all comes down to preference really. No game Is more ratchet or beautiful than another.

@@zerowolf137 world wise and adventure/story wise i love ff9 the most. Among the ff protagonist i cn relate and resemble zidane the most maybe thats why. The only thing that seemed lacking is the final boss(necron) he came from nowhere. Lol Also, i would like zidane's "angel of death" status to be explored more and shown in gameplay. I dont know why but my most op characters are stainer and vivi. Lol
@@kingcobra2858 I once heard that a lot of content was cut from FF9. It was suppose to be longer but they were rushing you get it out before the ps2 came out. Don't know how true that is, but if it is that could explain the final boss and all that. FF9 is my favourite (and Zidane my favourite protag) and would love a remake... though I think it's unlikely. Thankfully, the game is amazing as is.
8's story is what sold me on the game. All the problems that existed didn't matter because i wanted to see what happened next. That's when you know a game is good imo. 8 will always be my favorite followed by 7

I feel like people's favorites all differ from when they were introduced to the series. Mine will always be V since I absolutely love the class system. It was an endless grind.
The leveling and class system in FFV was amazing. Definitely in my top 5, if not top 3 just for the gameplay experience it provided, and ofcourse for a few cool story elements.
Yeah true. I die a little inside anytime some youngster says 'Crisis Core' was their favourite Final Fantasy game. It was a badly plotted cringily voice acted character assassination of Cloud and should not be considered 'canon' in the FF7 story and world. It was part of the new owners strategy, after the original creators and a lot of their team left, to use cheaply made sequels and prequels to previous titles to 'minimise costs and maximise profits'.
VII was my first entry, but V is definitely one of my favorites. I also thought the main characters had great chemistry together. I laughed at a lot of the hijinks that happened between them (like when they discover Faris is a woman). I laughed so hard at that scene. I do agree with you about the combat system though. It was extremely well developed.
Although i started with final fantasy II way back in the day and have played every game in the mainline series, my favorite in the saga still stands with final fantasy 12. That game is an absolute masterpiece imo especially the zodiac edition. Regardless, i have enjoyed every game in the series and am glad to have be able to share memories with everyone in this community
15 is the FF that I replayed the most and got 100% achievement each replay about 4x in total. When it first came out I loved it even with all the imperfections, when it got patched and new content was added the hype already died and lots of players didn't get to experience the new refined game with lots of side content and amazing DLC's. I grew up with 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13 my personal favorite is 12, I love the Gambit system and the difficulty of 12 but 15 is by far the one that I enjoyed the most. But as I play 15 I can't help but to feel how incomplete the game is and how much potential it had, could've been the best in the franchise easily. Such a missed opportunity. *SIDE NOTE* The boss fight against ifrit and his theme song is orgasmic, it was kinda of easy but such a spectacle to watch. I rate 15 an 8 out of 10, the Royal edition is a 9.5 out of 10 for me. The Royal edition should've been the actual game.
9 is my favorite game ever compared to everything. But I don't think I could handle a remake of that. I would pick the entire thing apart and criticize it for not being as perfect as the original.

9 is by far the most complete entry in the series but it's so hard for me to replay it. Took a lot for me to play it to begin with and and a lot more to replay it. The story is amazing, and the gameplay is very entertaining and clever but I hate the character designs specially the queen and Steiner lol. I played 9 in my early teens around 2006-2007 when 12 was out and the PS3 first came out. I couldn't get my hands in it took me a lot of tries to finish the game. A lot people feel the way I do, that's why it went unnoticed by a lot of people. Can't argue it's one of the best, solid story, easy to follow, great dialogue and amazing fleshed out characters but the designs, art style and atmosphere turns me off. A remake would do it justice but I doubt square will remake it it wasn't that popular to begin with also a lot of things will need to be change starting with character designs. 9 got the remastered treatment that 8, 12, 10 got.
Same for me and ff3. It was one of the first games in the franchise I played, along side 6 and 7 and I am confused why people hate it so much. Oh well.
Honestly have played almost every final fantasy as well as a LOT of story driven games and none affected me as much as FF9, the end cut scene literally made me cry, amazing.
I remember I used to go back and start up my ps1 every month or so just to beat the last boss to watch the ending again as a kid. I haven't actually done that in prolly over 15 years now.(ps1 long gone, but I own it on ps4/switch/and pc lmao) But I agree, no game, movie, book or anything has affected me the way FF9 did. A True Masterpiece. A wonderful love story that led you on to the end. Then the final scene when Dagger finally jumps into Zidanes arms we all cried, then cried even harder when we saw her start hitting him in his chest for not coming back sooner.
I remember back in the day on gamefaqs forums 8 was the game everyone loved to hate. 8 had a lot of similarities in flaws and pros to Xenogears. But because 8 was called Final Fantasy. It got a love hate reaction back in the day. Mainly cuz it was so different Nowadays, it receives a fair praise and people like it usually for what it ALWAYS was. Just a great rpg with noticable flaws but excellent aspects in a lot of ways
I hated it then but appreciate it now. Once you truly understand how to work the junction system the game becomes a lot more fun to play. I think part of the problem was back then us kids thought we needed to draw every spell to every character 100 times. For the majority of the game many spells only need one stack and at most two and the only spells you need 3 stacks of are those that are the best at stat junctioning.
I don't think it would beat FF6 for number one. But it would be damn close. The problem it runs into is competing with 6 itself. FF7 had 3D, it had a legendary console to command, it had a whole new tone to its story, badass sword fights, multiple movies and animations, and immense exposure. All of this is also what the remake very effectively capitalizes on as well. Now consider the fact that FF6, with its sprite graphics, straight-forwards world, and relative lack of love or support from its creators, has even still offered up so much depth, variety, character, tone and story in it that it STILL beats FF7 for top spot on many lists, and has energized so much love and loyalty from those whom have played it 26 years after the fact... and you begins to see just how much of a gulf that really is to overcome. If they gave FF6 the kind of love that FF7 gets, the results would be breathtaking. FF7 deserves its day first, oh absolutely! But some time, after that Mako Reactor has puckered out and gone silent, we'll all be hoping for the return of the Espers.
This is a hard series to judge, however I am glad someone else loved 6 as much as I do. Over all only a few shuffles I'd do but that is personal preference.
Agreed. I can see the justification for most in their places other than X which I'd at least swap places with 12 in this order. Personally my joint top are 7 and 10
nah ffx wasnt a good game. It has so many glitches, like lulu’s overdrive being nearly impossible to execute, and the jecht shot training being impossible unless you change the keybinds. The battle system is also long and boring with those aeon summoning cutscenes, and how long lulu just takes to attack, and i just escaped every battle. Then things just got worse since I had to grind for the hard bosses with insta-kill moves
Stefano Rosas Lisinski the story, the plot twist, the villains, how real the world feels, the emotion, the character designs, the landscape, the fighting, the music, the voice acting wasn’t even horrible people just bitch about the laughing scene a shit ton. The weapons looked awesome, the extra stuff to do, the sphere grid system, the monster designs, blitzball being its own thing (while also still being fun), the bonds between the characters. There was so many good things about the game and to say nothing was good is ignorant as fuck. Also the cutscenes are STILL some of the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve played a ton of games, you KNOW the Cutscene where they jumped off the airship was one of the coolest cutscenes in gaming and looked damn near real on the PS2.
I'm totally agree with the fist 3 games, VI, VII and IX are the finest FF ever, I can't say anything from XI and XIV because I've never played but also V, X and XII are really really good.
XIV is god tier, don't be fool when you see 14 is an mmorpg, it can be play like a single player game and it's one of the best, on par with 6 7 and 9 IMO.
@@romeostruedude The story and characters (apart from Fran and Balthier) arent great but the gameplay has aged very well. The scale and openess of the world, the monster hunting side quests, the updated combat etc. X is basically the complete opposite - possibly the best story, characters and general aesthetic of the series but the linearity and combat doesnt hold up too well.

The battle system was broken as shit. If one monster qued up a magic spell with a long cast time and animation NO ONE else could cast magic. So you could only use melee attacks. Characters where shit. Offline mmo wannabe game
In my opinion Final Fantasy XV was one of the best due to the story line and the whole world with his history. Together wit the movie kingsglaive it was a very emotional experience.
I honestly like 12 the most nowadays. Always considered it criminally underrated but time (and a great remaster) has been extremely kind to it. Its aged a LOT better than most of the other games.

i picked up the zodiac age back when it first came out on ps4 and didn't have high hopes for it. just something different i wanted to play. well after playing over 230 hours in a single play through and doing all the hunts and 100 percenting it, (screw you hastega btw) i say its a masterpiece of a game. yeah character development seemed to be lacking but none the less still a great game. i've recently picked it up on switch now also, as its one of my favorite games to play.
Despite 12 not being in my own top 5, I feel that it can't be overstated that 12 is basically a crown jewel of the PS2 insofar as showing the sheer maximum graphical muscle the system could flex. Every location was jaw-dropping. Every person, no, every living thing, was believable. 12 made me excited for the future of RPGs.
FFX was one of my favorites, but lets say that it was also the beginning of the end for the franchise : linear game, no world map. Thats a huge throwback even if the battle system and the story was good
I feel it worked for that particular game, with the focus on Yuna's pilgrimage. But yeah, the movie tanking and the subsequent restructuring & financial issues, with a lot of the key personal leaving, fundamentally shifted the company to a different phase after X. None of the FF's after have managed to capture the spirits within, to pardon the pun, of the golden years.

@@rocktleague6295 ffx was great and my second fav after 8 but 8 had a better story, better characters, more complex main character, more summons(gf), better story, way more challenging bosses and final boss, 2 ships you can actually fly around the map and not just choose a destination, better soundtrack and better limit breaks. Ff8 was also longer. The only flaws 8 had was drawing magic and you had to build compatibility with GF's and every character if you wanted them to be fast. FfX did have the sphere grid but 8 was an overall better experience
I absolutely love 8 and because of hacks ive gotten to play several versions of the game. I will say that 10 is right there in quality. Maybe it wins due to graphics but its close. Also the card system in 8 makes drawing pointless minus boss fights.

I agree i tried to get into FF15 as I have been putting it off for a while, keep in mind I played this after I had beat 9 6 and 7, safe to say i dont enjoy it as much, it's just so different to the older ones (which isn't always a bad thing) just as someone who has mostly only played the older ones its such a big change it threw me off

So many iconic boss fights with a great fighting system. I easily sent over 200 hours and it was definitely worth it. But yeah the game wasn't that story focused as other FF games

Nice list. I like the gameplay of 12 a lot, but I thought Vaan ruined a lot of the story. There were really interesting characters that could have been fleshed out in the spotlight more like Balthier, Basche, or Ashe. Like 12, FFX had the point of view character not be the "main" character, with the "main" character being Yuna. Nevertheless, Tidus was really important in moving the plot forward, he had a satisfying character arc via Zanarkand and his relationships with the rest of the cast, and you really felt in his shoes trying to understand an unknown world. FFXII does not pull that off. Honestly can't remember much interesting about Vaan. He had a thing with his brother that was only relevant very early-game. He wanted to be a pirate. It just seems like you can remove him and get back basically the same game.
@@fangiscool1 Basch and Ashe were going to be the main characters but the developers decided "we need younger protagonists for a younger audience" and so they included Vaan and Penelo as a last minute effort. Given the games plot being around politics and war, it's already one of the more mature games in the franchise. They could have went with Basch in my opinion. I agree on everything you said. The gameplay mechanics are my favorite to this day. Big open world, monsters roaming around and the gambit system for a more strategic approach were all just great. The only downside being Vaan and Penelo. Even the mythos and lore of Ivalice are amazing. I loved reading through all the history in the bestiary.
Yeah,anytime XII gets the love it deserves,I'm down for it. Great open world play,story is strong enough to make you invested in moving things along,characters are good,TONS of side quests and many of them are relevant and the battle system is great. One thing you guys left out that I love about it...NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS. You can choose many of the fights you want to have or not. The drawbacks,Tidus being a weak protagonist and also the lack of any real kind of a job system (everyone is basically what you decide to equip them with,no levels up on a defined path) aren't enough to drag this one down for me. Maybe the best game ever released for PS2.
Almost similar to my experience. Started with 7 but 8 10 and 13 were my favourites for a while. Its now 10 13 13-2 and 12. 12 doesnt have the greatest story or music but boy oh boy is the combat and gameplay sweet. 10 and 13 trilogy have story gameplay and music in spades though. After this its 5 due to its incredible job system and this may surprise you but 10-2 and 13-3 (i liked the dresspheres system). Its after this where 8 and 7 appear now. Dont get me wrong theyre still awesome games its just so difficult to rate them especially in 2020
@@nezkeys79 I think 10 blew me away with the the actual voice on ps2. Never done before prior. 13 was on ANOTHER level. Not sure why the hate 13 gets but the storyline and graphics were unmatched. I actually loved 13-2 more than 13. 15 was good but I maybe in the minority on that. Once again open world and driving. It does feel rushed at the end but I really enjoyed it

XII is my personal favorite, just because of the storyline and Ivalice ; then comes X, and III (yeah, I loved it, and even if the story is non-existent, the atmosphere was just perfect), IX and XV. I haven't played VII since I was little, so I don't remember it enough to judge about it : I'll definitely give a try once again.
Unpopular Opinion: I don’t love Final Fantasy VI as much as many other people. The gameplay, story, & music are all good, but there were too many characters that I personally didn’t care about. And also, too many party members, & I didn’t like that because it got too complicated & grindy. I love the 1st half of the game, & the way Kefka won. But the 2nd half was a drag for me, & I didn’t enjoy it much. I almost gave up, but I decided that I should keep going. I beat it at last, & I liked it, but I don’t think it’s the best Final Fantasy game. Honestly, I think it’s kinda overrated. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t find it all that special to me compared to Final Fantasy VII & IX. On a personal note, Final Fantasy VII is my favorite Final Fantasy game. But on a critical note, I think Final Fantasy IX is the best Final Fantasy game. These are just my opinions, that’s all.

@@Dsrgreyy I really like VIII. I'm also playing the remastered version right now. I have a love/hate relationship with the junction system and love the characters. But overall it's not on the same level as the four most beloved titles, which are in my opinion really close to each other. That absolutely doesn't mean that VIII is a bad game or as bad as some fans make it seem to be. I put it in that very solid middle ground of good Final Fantasies with the likes of IV, X or XII. Those are good Final Fantasies and awesome games that show a certain high level of quality. And VIII might even be on top of them, but sadly the story is a mess. It's a beautiful mess at times and maybe I'm just too stupid to realize the genius behind it. But there is just so much uncalled for stuff that I find questionable and it's hard to make out a coherent theme in it.
I'm so GLAD to see everybody commenting that X should be way higher. The gameplay was fantastic, the story so well-written, the music TO DIE FOR. I've easily spent more than 140 hours on that game and would gladly pick it up again anytime.

I played FF 9 recently. I'm 24 and didn't think I could emerge so much in its world and beautiful story. It just amazed me. It definetely needs a remake.

FF10 has good and maybe the best Gameplay when it comes to the fights, but the rest is just not my thing, i disliked most of the Characters, i didnt liked the Story, so little big Summons, aynoing mini Game and just overall very meh, never finished the whole Game.
And dont get me started at X-2 holy shit wtf was that? dropped it after 30 Minutes or so.
But that said, every other Title beside these 5 is either to old or to too but be wirth playing (i personal dont count the Online FF as main title), maybe beside FF5, so it deserves the Top 5 Spot.

Agree, X behind XII sounds kind of a joke to me. XII on release was a nightmare to me, and i dislike completely the combat system.
And i would put it even higher than IX because of the refined version of turn-base combats, more interesting and interactive summons and less kid style of art. But this is just my opinion.
And XV's open world and main characters interactions deserve a little bit more, i can forgive the last episodes but the main villain was never charismatic enough for me and the DLC missions are an insult for a FF game.
For me VII is just the best, the only thing i would add is Blitzball (God that **** was addictive as hell).
X is very underrated. Must be the best battle system in the whole franchise.
10 deserves it's ranking, it was a fine RPG but not a great FF game. For many people FFX was their first FF game so they hold it in higher placement than it should be. The linear aspect and terrible voice acting didn't help for me. The story felt like it tried too hard to set this love narrative between Tidus and Yuna. Though the music and cast of characters were some of my favs in any of the games there were too many things that bugged me about it. I think this list has it properly placed.
7 taught me how to overcome grief and move on with life despite losing loved ones and depression
8 showed me there is love and opportunity to live as long as we fight
9 captivated me with its beautifully dark fantasy and helped me through my own existential crisis like zidane.
10 was my very first FF game and it was breathtaking how a game covers real life situations (religious corruption cycle of spira), how to deal with sorrow and always believe in your loved ones.
These games have been a lifesaving guide on how to become a hero in this world and pursue a well loved and lived life. Im forever grateful to have invested so many hours into these amazing games.
6 will teach you that there are men out there who just want the world to burn. Lol kefka was the best villain ever

No hate n all but how exactly did 7 show you how to get over death. If Cloud wouldve gotten over Aeriths and Zacks death we wouldnt have had Advent Children.
@@parjol9064 FF7 at the end of the game when they're headed to the Northern Crater Cloud (on the airship) acknowledges her sacrifice and the reason why they should keep on going and not have her death be in vain. They would fight for the world Aerith wanted instead of letting Sephiroth have his way. Advent Children allowed Cloud to overcome his grief and accept their deaths entirely, but FF7 the game was coming to terms with it and ultimately making the choice of moving forward when there was literally no hope left. to do anything after meteor was summoned. They literally contemplated whether it was even possible to save the world, but they understood what they had to do when it was revealed that Aerith was succesful in her prayer and wouldn't let her sacrifice be for nothing.
@@parjol9064 also it was the first RPG when I was young where I really liked Aerith as a character, and the game LITERALLY kills her off. How is this literally not trying to get over her death? We love her and she dies, the game reminds you that even if characters die (or even people and family members or loved ones IRL) they will always live on in our hearts.
Say what you will about the voice acting of FFX, but for me, the soundtrack/music in the game alone puts it in the top 5.

Ff7 remake was what introduced me to the series, I didn’t even want it in the first place since I had no reason to want to play it, I only got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription because there was nothing else to get. I do not regret it, and even though I’ve only played the remake and the original, I love it and I will probably play the other games in the future.

For me, the golden age of Final Fantasy games was the period between FFVI and FFX (incl. FFX-2), they're the ones that I go back to and play the most out of all of them and are some of the best turn based RPG's ever.

My favorite FF game has been, for a while FFIX, closely followed by FFVI.
But I also realize that FFIX, as a game, wasn't as accessible too many players as other FF games despite having a very "Bladerunneresque" story and some of the most colorful characters in the series.
Isky X is my favorite too I even have the Zanarkand Abe’s logo tattooed on me it will forever be my favorite game, is it flawed?yes, is the voice acting cringy ? Yes. But it doesn’t mean it’s not a good story. Too many people just play through once and don’t look into doing the side stuff which I think is pretty fun.

FF9 really is a dark horse #1 for me in the series. The character development in this entry is better than any other one in the series. Playing it back on the original console was spit into 4 discs. Multiple disks really made it feel like a great play with intermissions, or a great novel. Such a great piece of work.

Final Fantasy 6 aka Final Fantasy 3 in the USA, is my all-time favorite. My dad (rip) and I stood outside a K-mart when it launched. We were 3rd in line and there were only 5 copies :). I played it until the TV broke. lol

15 is actually a pretty fantastic game, but everyone bashed it because they didn't release all of the content on release date which Is understandable. I bet if SquareEnix released the entire game as it is now (Royal Edition), AND THEN added more DLC it would of been on everyones radar for one of the best ff games for sure.

I have played every FF ever made when it was released (yup... I’m old). My favorites in the series have always been 4, 6, and 7. I even have the sheet music of “Terra’s Theme” tattooed on my arm...
But even I admit that FF14 has earned its place in the pantheon of the greatest. Shadow bringers in scope, emotion, villain, characters, voice acting (god the voice acting!!), combat... just amazing.
The villain in particular reminded me of Thanos in how relatable and complex he was. Emet-Selch should be in every conversation with Kefka and Sephiroth.
I’m glad to see FF14 is getting the praise it deserves. It’s earned it. It really is one of the greatest now.

i dont disagree, BUT.... after playing non stop since relaunch the great story wasnt enough to keep me engaged, the gear treadmill just made it like work instead of fun, just rinse and repeat battles and gear grew exhausting to me, expansions and patches is nothing more than the same over and over, it was fun as hell for a long time, but it got boring, to me at least

Ffx was the first ff game I ever played and made me fall in love with the series in general but the soundtrack still hasn’t been beat in my opinion. For that reason alone it should be higher on the list! It was also the very first rpg I played with actual voice acting and I know it’s aged, but seriously it was one of the very first so that shouldn’t count against it :/

Not only the game looks absolutely gorgeous but the new zodiac job system is a heaven sent compared to that old license board , and as someone who played it originally and replayed again recently with the zodiac age I'd say give it a try .You may find a new appreciation for it at a more mature age . I certainly did .

I really liked FF XIII. What can I say. I plated FF XV, I really love that one. And my favorite FF is XII. In my ps2 I played 180 hours. Now in my ps4 I am 3 trophies away from the platinum.
That's ironic because those 3 games are all very different in terms of battles system. Final Fantasy XII is almost a perfect game. Final Fantasy XII's writing and story is absolutely fantastic, and the voice acting is about as close to perfect as it gets. Every single environment in Final Fantasy XII is diverse. Final Fantasy XII has forests, jungles, deserts, prairies, plains, mountainous regions, sewers, cities, villages etc. It's great to see that there are actually other people out there that love that masterpiece.

Ff 12 gets mixed reviews but I loved it. I remember trying to beat yiamzat or whatever it’s called. Taken me a crazy amount of time to get there but gave up in the end. Always regretted it.
The best ones, for me at least, are Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy VII.

the reason FF7 is so beloved by people is because for most people who played FF7 when it came out it was their first time experienced a game that was narrated in an immersive way, with characters players got emotionally attached to and a story told in a spectacular way. FF7 was the first FF that was a huge mainstream success in the West. Real OGs that also grew up playing Secret of Mana, Fire Emblem, Lufia and Terranigma to name a few had their first experience with FF6 or even FF4. But FF7 was the first game in 3D on 2D backgrounds and a 3D battle screen. It was revolutionary in 1997 to have a JRPG like that. In general, FF7 was the first time it felt like playing an actual story and not an arcade type video game. Thats why FF7 had a huge impact and people who played it until now. FFX was later in a time where narrative games were already common everywhere. FF13 came out just 2011 less than 10 years ago. Also in a time where emphasis on cinematic games and its plot line was a norm. My point is that for people who played FF7 in 97 when it released it was also sth thats never been seen and played like this before. Thats why players that knew Pre FF6, FF6 or FF7 werent impressed with FFX, at all. It was linear, had awkward voice acting, no proper towns, an unlikable protagonist and a level up system that was immature. But it also had a decent battle system, great summons, a beautiful musical score and of course Blitzball. Its not the worst FFX but most people who played FF since FF7 or pre FF7 would agree that FFX isnt in the top 5, not by a long shot. Thats what I mean. Sorry for the wall of text but this is hard to explain in a sentence for me.

Final Fantasy XI was amazing. The most hardcore game I've ever played. No hand holding, an amazing job system, with fantastic flexibility with jobs and parties. Such amazing environments as well.

I actually really LOVED FFXV - the elemancy and open world was really cool! I’m currently playing FFX out of pure nostalgia because it reminds me of my childhood 😭 but, the battle system is so complex compared to XV. Either way the storyline on X is beyond amazing.
I also really loved final fantasy XV.

I actually liked FF2 mechanics. It reminds me of RuneScape since the more you use a skill the more experience it gains. Plus if you roam too far out in the beginning you can encounter extremely high level monsters that one-shot you.

FF7 Remake was incredible and brought me back to my childhood. I liked FFX and FFXV but I was blown away by FFXII The Zodiac Age. Loved the story, soundtrack and gameplay. The world was so vast and a joy to explore. Truly epic. I agree with most that FFVI should definitely have a remake.
13 sucked me into that story for some reason. I loved that whole party that you adventure with. X & x2 would be my top though

That's because the bulk of the game is directly taken from ff6. From the lead protagonists being a thief and a mysterious girl with ancient powers, to visiting a mage/magitech factory, to the names and roles of the villains. Emperor/Queen adopted parent, Kefka vs. Kuja manipulating them. and that's just the tip of the iceberg. They threw a fresh coat of paint on a previous success and called it new.
Final Fantasy 6 (or how I remember it as FF3) was my favorite FF game the characters and play value is so high you it’s like ff7 endgame quality and the weapons are great like ultimate weapon and ragnarok. I remember dual wielding those. But the opera scene is something I will never forget. And the music

Final Fantasy IV is my favorite. I was almost 13 when I got it for Christmas. At the time, there was nothing else like it. It was a massive game. Games at that time did not tell stories like IV, or had soundtracks with so many songs, that sounded so amazing. My favorite system might be the Super Nintendo, and this was essentially Super Final Fantasy. VI might be a better game (both are excellent), as it expanded on IV and has so much more to offer. But for me, VI doesn’t have quite the same magic IV has.
Agree completely. I was about the same age when it came out, and I was a huge Dragon Warrior (i.e., Quest) fan before that game. The opening scene, with the airships, was so cinematic, it was like watching a movie... my friend and I couldn't believe it. I beat that game so many times as a kid. That game really stuck with me and is my favorite to this day... with VI and IX coming in close behind. I never was a big fan of the wholesale move away from fantasy to steampunk/sci-fi story telling with VII and VIII... I hope one day they give the high fantasy version of Final Fantasy a go again... but they probably won't, given how popular VII is

It was the first FF I played too! It was not the best for me but it always has a special place in my heart. “Theme of Love” and “Rydia” are definitely up there as the best music in the final fantasy series.
Nice to run into more fans of my age group. 4 was my second entry, and was one of my first SNES games. I started with the original. My first four NES games literally were Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior. 4 was also the first game I ever replayed just to speed run. Of the entire series, it rates 3rd for me, behind 6 in first and 7 in 2nd.

I still remember the gut wrenching feeling of the start of the second half of ff6, seeing the massive damage Kefka did to the world. and how much harder everyone's life had become. Then even after defeating Kefka, the world was still in ruins. the victory still had a feeling of sadness, and loss. such good story telling.
Yup, one of the villains that actually won. Not to mention Celes was in a coma for a year, during which Kefka went on an unchecked rampage across the world.
The testament to Kefka is that he was a better Kylo Ren than Kylo Ren was 21 years before Kylo Ren, and he was a better Thanos than Thanos was over a decade before Thanos. Kefka did the Throne Room scene in the last jedi correctly when he betrayed Emperor Gesthal, and immediately after, Kekfa destroyed everything and there was no quantum realm undo button.
Yeap Yeap. That's my hypest part in FFVI. After Kefka destroyed the world, you wake up as ceres alone and sees the destroyed world while looking for comrades. Damn that was epic and sad. I wish they Remake it too. That would be really epic.
Tbh I liked this game until that point when it got really boring and grindy. Every step was a battle and it wasn’t even required to get all your friends back. Wold of ruin literally ruined the game for me. Tbh I like ff4, 9, 12 and 10 more. Not just7

Ex I still love 5th gen early 3D designs /pre-rendered backgrounds/spliced up CG cut-scenes/text-only or minimal dialogue a la Dark Souls/older sound quality
over all of this spoiled glitz and glamour we have today. Most games today just age more harshly with less Innovation than oldschool in the areas I care about.
FF7 holds up 23+ years later and never really lost being fun exactly how It was In 97'. You have to be a well versed gamer to look at the bigger picture
and read between hype and generational changes to seperate the bs from the truth of your experiences. We all have preferences and all graphics are dated usually
before a game Is ever released , given the long 3-4+ year dev cycle averages today. Modern games can be groundbreaking and timeless too js

8's story is what sold me on the game. All the problems that existed didn't matter because i wanted to see what happened next. That's when you know a game is good imo. 8 will always be my favorite followed by 7

I feel like people's favorites all differ from when they were introduced to the series. Mine will always be V since I absolutely love the class system. It was an endless grind.
The leveling and class system in FFV was amazing. Definitely in my top 5, if not top 3 just for the gameplay experience it provided, and ofcourse for a few cool story elements.

It was a badly plotted cringily voice acted character assassination of Cloud and should not be considered 'canon' in the FF7 story and world. It was part of the new owners strategy, after the original creators and a lot of their team left, to use cheaply made sequels and prequels to previous titles to 'minimise costs and maximise profits'.

My introduction to the series was ff4/ff2 for the SNES
VII was my first entry, but V is definitely one of my favorites. I also thought the main characters had great chemistry together. I laughed at a lot of the hijinks that happened between them (like when they discover Faris is a woman). I laughed so hard at that scene.
I do agree with you about the combat system though. It was extremely well developed.
Although i started with final fantasy II way back in the day and have played every game in the mainline series, my favorite in the saga still stands with final fantasy 12. That game is an absolute masterpiece imo especially the zodiac edition. Regardless, i have enjoyed every game in the series and am glad to have be able to share memories with everyone in this community

15 is the FF that I replayed the most and got 100% achievement each replay about 4x in total. When it first came out I loved it even with all the imperfections, when it got patched and new content was added the hype already died and lots of players didn't get to experience the new refined game with lots of side content and amazing DLC's.
I grew up with 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13 my personal favorite is 12, I love the Gambit system and the difficulty of 12 but 15 is by far the one that I enjoyed the most. But as I play 15 I can't help but to feel how incomplete the game is and how much potential it had, could've been the best in the franchise easily. Such a missed opportunity.
*SIDE NOTE* The boss fight against ifrit and his theme song is orgasmic, it was kinda of easy but such a spectacle to watch.
I rate 15 an 8 out of 10, the Royal edition is a 9.5 out of 10 for me. The Royal edition should've been the actual game.

9 is by far the most complete entry in the series but it's so hard for me to replay it. Took a lot for me to play it to begin with and and a lot more to replay it. The story is amazing, and the gameplay is very entertaining and clever but I hate the character designs specially the queen and Steiner lol.
I played 9 in my early teens around 2006-2007 when 12 was out and the PS3 first came out. I couldn't get my hands in it took me a lot of tries to finish the game. A lot people feel the way I do, that's why it went unnoticed by a lot of people. Can't argue it's one of the best, solid story, easy to follow, great dialogue and amazing fleshed out characters but the designs, art style and atmosphere turns me off.
A remake would do it justice but I doubt square will remake it it wasn't that popular to begin with also a lot of things will need to be change starting with character designs. 9 got the remastered treatment that 8, 12, 10 got.

Honestly have played almost every final fantasy as well as a LOT of story driven games and none affected me as much as FF9, the end cut scene literally made me cry, amazing.
I remember I used to go back and start up my ps1 every month or so just to beat the last boss to watch the ending again as a kid. I haven't actually done that in prolly over 15 years now.(ps1 long gone, but I own it on ps4/switch/and pc lmao) But I agree, no game, movie, book or anything has affected me the way FF9 did. A True Masterpiece. A wonderful love story that led you on to the end. Then the final scene when Dagger finally jumps into Zidanes arms we all cried, then cried even harder when we saw her start hitting him in his chest for not coming back sooner.

I remember back in the day on gamefaqs forums 8 was the game everyone loved to hate.
8 had a lot of similarities in flaws and pros to Xenogears. But because 8 was called Final Fantasy. It got a love hate reaction back in the day. Mainly cuz it was so different
Nowadays, it receives a fair praise and people like it usually for what it ALWAYS was. Just a great rpg with noticable flaws but excellent aspects in a lot of ways
I hated it then but appreciate it now. Once you truly understand how to work the junction system the game becomes a lot more fun to play. I think part of the problem was back then us kids thought we needed to draw every spell to every character 100 times. For the majority of the game many spells only need one stack and at most two and the only spells you need 3 stacks of are those that are the best at stat junctioning.
I recently starred it again . It's nor as bad as i remembered it but still nothing i would call great, mediocore might be the best word for it.

I don't think it would beat FF6 for number one. But it would be damn close.
The problem it runs into is competing with 6 itself. FF7 had 3D, it had a legendary console to command, it had a whole new tone to its story, badass sword fights, multiple movies and animations, and immense exposure. All of this is also what the remake very effectively capitalizes on as well.
Now consider the fact that FF6, with its sprite graphics, straight-forwards world, and relative lack of love or support from its creators, has even still offered up so much depth, variety, character, tone and story in it that it STILL beats FF7 for top spot on many lists, and has energized so much love and loyalty from those whom have played it 26 years after the fact... and you begins to see just how much of a gulf that really is to overcome.
If they gave FF6 the kind of love that FF7 gets, the results would be breathtaking. FF7 deserves its day first, oh absolutely! But some time, after that Mako Reactor has puckered out and gone silent, we'll all be hoping for the return of the Espers.

nah ffx wasnt a good game. It has so many glitches, like lulu’s overdrive being nearly impossible to execute, and the jecht shot training being impossible unless you change the keybinds. The battle system is also long and boring with those aeon summoning cutscenes, and how long lulu just takes to attack, and i just escaped every battle. Then things just got worse since I had to grind for the hard bosses with insta-kill moves

The weapons looked awesome, the extra stuff to do, the sphere grid system, the monster designs, blitzball being its own thing (while also still being fun), the bonds between the characters. There was so many good things about the game and to say nothing was good is ignorant as fuck. Also the cutscenes are STILL some of the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve played a ton of games, you KNOW the Cutscene where they jumped off the airship was one of the coolest cutscenes in gaming and looked damn near real on the PS2.
I'm totally agree with the fist 3 games, VI, VII and IX are the finest FF ever, I can't say anything from XI and XIV because I've never played but also V, X and XII are really really good.

The scale and openess of the world, the monster hunting side quests, the updated combat etc. X is basically the complete opposite - possibly the best story, characters and general aesthetic of the series but the linearity and combat doesnt hold up too well.
12 was good because the battle system was very good and loads of sidequests. The story is avg at best

The battle system was broken as shit. If one monster qued up a magic spell with a long cast time and animation NO ONE else could cast magic. So you could only use melee attacks.

In my opinion Final Fantasy XV was one of the best due to the story line and the whole world with his history. Together wit the movie kingsglaive it was a very emotional experience.
I honestly like 12 the most nowadays. Always considered it criminally underrated but time (and a great remaster) has been extremely kind to it. Its aged a LOT better than most of the other games.

i picked up the zodiac age back when it first came out on ps4 and didn't have high hopes for it. just something different i wanted to play. well after playing over 230 hours in a single play through and doing all the hunts and 100 percenting it, (screw you hastega btw) i say its a masterpiece of a game. yeah character development seemed to be lacking but none the less still a great game. i've recently picked it up on switch now also, as its one of my favorite games to play.
Despite 12 not being in my own top 5, I feel that it can't be overstated that 12 is basically a crown jewel of the PS2 insofar as showing the sheer maximum graphical muscle the system could flex. Every location was jaw-dropping. Every person, no, every living thing, was believable. 12 made me excited for the future of RPGs.
X has one of the best, if not the best, fleshed-out stories, thematic content, and character development of all the FF's. Should be in the top 3.
FFX was one of my favorites, but lets say that it was also the beginning of the end for the franchise : linear game, no world map. Thats a huge throwback even if the battle system and the story was good
I feel it worked for that particular game, with the focus on Yuna's pilgrimage. But yeah, the movie tanking and the subsequent restructuring & financial issues, with a lot of the key personal leaving, fundamentally shifted the company to a different phase after X. None of the FF's after have managed to capture the spirits within, to pardon the pun, of the golden years.
Honestly ffx was the only ff that took with me. The other games were just kind of cute (though I'm hoping the ff7 will change that)

@@rocktleague6295 ffx was great and my second fav after 8 but 8 had a better story, better characters, more complex main character, more summons(gf), better story, way more challenging bosses and final boss, 2 ships you can actually fly around the map and not just choose a destination, better soundtrack and better limit breaks. Ff8 was also longer. The only flaws 8 had was drawing magic and you had to build compatibility with GF's and every character if you wanted them to be fast. FfX did have the sphere grid but 8 was an overall better experience
I absolutely love 8 and because of hacks ive gotten to play several versions of the game. I will say that 10 is right there in quality. Maybe it wins due to graphics but its close. Also the card system in 8 makes drawing pointless minus boss fights.

@@MajorenSnor than I think you didn't play ff12 in the right way. It's by far the biggest FF game, with the most side quests and the best fights, at least in my opinion. So many iconic boss fights with a great fighting system. I easily sent over 200 hours and it was definitely worth it.

I'm a fan of everything Final Fantasy. Played through almost every side series and spin-off too. This one is just my personal list. One day I'll be replaying FF XII and tell "it's the best ever" the other day I'll replay FFX and be amazed by it. My opinion depends honestly on how I remember most entries. When the FF7R gets released I'l probably state that it's the best one lol.
Nice list. I like the gameplay of 12 a lot, but I thought Vaan ruined a lot of the story. There were really interesting characters that could have been fleshed out in the spotlight more like Balthier, Basche, or Ashe. Like 12, FFX had the point of view character not be the "main" character, with the "main" character being Yuna. Nevertheless, Tidus was really important in moving the plot forward, he had a satisfying character arc via Zanarkand and his relationships with the rest of the cast, and you really felt in his shoes trying to understand an unknown world.
FFXII does not pull that off. Honestly can't remember much interesting about Vaan. He had a thing with his brother that was only relevant very early-game. He wanted to be a pirate. It just seems like you can remove him and get back basically the same game.
@@fangiscool1 Basch and Ashe were going to be the main characters but the developers decided "we need younger protagonists for a younger audience" and so they included Vaan and Penelo as a last minute effort. Given the games plot being around politics and war, it's already one of the more mature games in the franchise. They could have went with Basch in my opinion.
I agree on everything you said. The gameplay mechanics are my favorite to this day. Big open world, monsters roaming around and the gambit system for a more strategic approach were all just great. The only downside being Vaan and Penelo. Even the mythos and lore of Ivalice are amazing. I loved reading through all the history in the bestiary.

Great open world play,story is strong enough to make you invested in moving things along,characters are good,TONS of side quests and many of them are relevant and the battle system is great. One thing you guys left out that I love about it...NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS. You can choose many of the fights you want to have or not.
The drawbacks,Tidus being a weak protagonist and also the lack of any real kind of a job system (everyone is basically what you decide to equip them with,no levels up on a defined path) aren't enough to drag this one down for me. Maybe the best game ever released for PS2.

Almost similar to my experience. Started with 7 but 8 10 and 13 were my favourites for a while.
Its now 10 13 13-2 and 12. 12 doesnt have the greatest story or music but boy oh boy is the combat and gameplay sweet. 10 and 13 trilogy have story gameplay and music in spades though. After this its 5 due to its incredible job system and this may surprise you but 10-2 and 13-3 (i liked the dresspheres system). Its after this where 8 and 7 appear now. Dont get me wrong theyre still awesome games its just so difficult to rate them especially in 2020
@@nezkeys79 I think 10 blew me away with the the actual voice on ps2. Never done before prior. 13 was on ANOTHER level. Not sure why the hate 13 gets but the storyline and graphics were unmatched. I actually loved 13-2 more than 13. 15 was good but I maybe in the minority on that. Once again open world and driving. It does feel rushed at the end but I really enjoyed it

XII is my personal favorite, just because of the storyline and Ivalice ; then comes X, and III (yeah, I loved it, and even if the story is non-existent, the atmosphere was just perfect), IX and XV. I haven't played VII since I was little, so I don't remember it enough to judge about it : I'll definitely give a try once again.

Unpopular Opinion:
I don’t love Final Fantasy VI as much as many other people. The gameplay, story, & music are all good, but there were too many characters that I personally didn’t care about. And also, too many party members, & I didn’t like that because it got too complicated & grindy. I love the 1st half of the game, & the way Kefka won. But the 2nd half was a drag for me, & I didn’t enjoy it much. I almost gave up, but I decided that I should keep going. I beat it at last, & I liked it, but I don’t think it’s the best Final Fantasy game. Honestly, I think it’s kinda overrated. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t find it all that special to me compared to Final Fantasy VII & IX. On a personal note, Final Fantasy VII is my favorite Final Fantasy game. But on a critical note, I think Final Fantasy IX is the best Final Fantasy game. These are just my opinions, that’s all.
