I agree with the folks at JRPGLife ... wildly criminal that FF16 was voted ahead of Octopath Traveler II. OT2 deserved to WIN and wasn't even nominated. This exact category decision made me lose a ton of respect for the voters attached to the Game Awards.

I understand FFTA is your favorite. But it has nothing on the OG FFT. Just saying. The first two chapters of FFTA is actually really good. To me they just stacked too many rules on it. Kinda my stand point in Triple triad. Love that card game in the first three regions. After that it got too stupid. Found myself headed back to the first region to reset the rules just to make it enjoyable. Problem is you can’t do that in FFTA. Just saying

10 is my fav. 7 is second. I was the perfect age when 7 dropped I dropped so much time into it as a older teen. I know a lot of it is tied to nostalgia. 6 is my 3rd fav. 8 I never finished until a couple years ago because when I first played it I wanted all the cards and dropped all my time into getting the cards. So it is one of my least fav too many bad memories.

I agree with you on 8 card game. I respect you decision having 10 over 7. At least you didn’t put 7 in c-class. This is the only person I know that doesn’t have 7 at a-class or higher. 🤦♂️

I’m blown away. When I bought 13 I was probably about 15-18, and I loathed the game. Every single equipment being the same model and simply a reskin was incredibly underwhelming, the combat was alright, and the linearity made it an absolute slog that I quit within the first 20 hours.
I have a hard time believing it’s worthy of going back to! I’ll have to take it into consideration!
If you didn't like the combat you might not enjoy the rest of it, but we sure did!
Similar experience for me. 13 was the first Final Fantasy game I didn't play to completion and walked away from it unfinished. It was a little of everything that bothered me. The story was hard to follow, I hated the characters except the guy with the chocobo in his afro and Vanille, the first part of the game just dragged on too long before the world opens up, the bootleg sphere grid wasn't a good progression system. Most importantly, I hated the combat system. Some years later, I did try to give it another shot and actually finish the game. I tried my best even reading all the lore stuff. I still hated it.
Crazy to think that my three favorite FF games are also 6, 8, and 13. Never would've expected anyone to agree with me. Nicely done.

Every play through I like it a little less but It’s still my favorite ff. Really connected with music characters and junction system. Playing it first as a moody teenager really helped

Hey! New to the channel community. I have seen you on some other RUclipsr videos and wanted to hop by as I am also a huge JRPG fan. It was fun hearing your thoughts. I am a big FF collector as well. I have actually not played 12 yet but based on what you both stated, it is high on my list to play this year now. I actually enjoy political intrigue in stories so I loved 16's story but would not call it an RPG. I also just got around to playing 15 this year with the Royal Edition and would rank it at a B. I enjoyed it. The story was straight forward but I had fun with it. It also sounds like I should give 13 a good try even though I am in the boat of people that heard it sucks. Thanks for the videos!

Mystic quest was a great entry into Final Fantasy and retro RPGs 😀
FFMQ was my first JRPG. My order in playing the game is FFMQ, FF4, FF6, FF7, FFT, FF5, FF3, FF9, FFTA, FF10, FF2, FF1, FF7DC, FF12, FF13, FFT0, FFX-2, FF13LR, FFBE, FF7CC, FF15, FF7R, FF16 then FF7EC. If you look at my tier list you might will see why it is how it is. Play most of these games in the year they came out in the USA.
Really liked seeing V ranked so high. It’s such an overlooked game in the series.
Seeing XIII ranked top tier is a surprise, I don’t consider it a bad game, but the story and characters weren’t for me. But I put VI in C tier so I’m used to having my ranking called “hot takes”

Final Fantasy VII or Tactics. Those are my favorites. Hands down.
Favorite so far VII. The first I've ever played. Only made it up to VIII for now, which is honestly the worst so far. The pixel games were fine but nothing special for me. The only exception is VI. Just started playing it today and I'm having a blast. Didn't expect it to be that good aftre being disappointed by I-V. For now it's the second best. But I still have to go through quite a lot of FF games before making a final ranking. What I can say for sure though is that VI and VII are the only ones that are good enough to be worth replaying. At least in my opinion.

Would love for you both to try 14. I never had the ability to play 11 when it came out, and had a bad experience with an MMO prior to 14, but I couldn’t be happier that I have played/play it now. 100% a final fantasy, and you can play solo easily/the party system matches quickly most of the time and a lot of the game is getting the in game characters able to complete dungeons etc with. Amazing! Maybe you play them and just haven’t counted them, I’ve never seen your channel until right now, sorry if you play and I just don’t know!
I used to be a WoW addict so I vowed to steer clear of MMOs moving forward 😅
I totally get that, that’s the only mmo I had played before. I wanted to like wow but always felt behind, I played because you’re supposed to like it, for two years I struggled. I played FFXIV at PaxEast and fell in love with the controller controls (I only play on console outside of my WoW attempt) and the characters and story hooked me like other ff games. It doesn’t require time like I think we think mmos do, designed that way to be able to jump in jump out. Anyway, I must sound like a seller of the game haha it’s just great!
@@JackpotToys Yeah, the thing with XIV is that you can play the entire story solo and not have to ever interact with others if you don't want to. So if you just want that RPG story experience single player style, you can do that.
@@JRPGLife I’m agree. I don’t play MMO RPG for two reasons. There is no real end and I don’t believe in paying a monthly fee after I pay $70-$100 for the game already.

ff8 was my first experience with Final Fantasy. I've had the same issue with 7. I would play through disc 1 and just stop. I could never get into it. FF8 and FF9 are my favorite of all time. But I'd say 8 is probably in my top 5 games of all time.

@@JRPGLifealso had the exact same experience with 7 & 8. In fact I never was much of a turn based strategy gamer until someone showed me ff8 in college. Fell in love with it. Rented 7 and was like this is not for me. Whole episode was enjoyable. Tried to get into the rest and just couldn't. 8 all the way.

We don't do many of those types of videos because they take a LOT of time to create and edit and get very few views. We trickle stuff like that in every so often though 😀

Right there with you guys on FF VI !! STILL a top 5 game for me all-time :). This, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest XI, Tales of Arise, and Octopath Traveler II
As someone with half a tattoo sleeve of FF...Pixel Remaster was a god-send. Even if it was very pricey. Its nice having 1-10, 12 on Switch! FF9 was my first, went back to 7 and hated it since it felt so dated (I was 11) but 7 grew into being my favorite FF and game of all time. Also, FF13 S-tier? That is one hot take haha.

I liked the video. Some of the entries (bar IV and VII) are even what I would rank them ;)
On the other hand some of the mistakes you made with the games you knew less did put me out of the video.
The Zemus/Zeromus stuff, airships which were all in 1-3, summoners which did start in 3, there was no magicite in VII etc.
I know there is no soul that knows everything but that's a bit too much mistakes for a tier list. And I am even not a hardcore fan :) but this is just my boomer talking, overall nice work ;)
Thanks for commenting! I definitely misspoke and said "magicite" when I meant "materia," and I meant a fly-able airship, not just airships in general. I think a bit of the context was edited out mistakenly as well (the original cut was over 1.5 hours long 😵💫) Either way, we're okay with making some mistakes, it makes us human. I tend to play a game all the way through, then forget everything about it a week later, so I'll call it a win 😅
I mostly agree with your list, but FF16 music is very good.
Majority of JRPG are linear, so I don't get why FFXIII got all the hate.
The music and character design are top tier.
My fav FF are FF7, FF8, FF13, FF16
My least fav are FF15 and the 13 sequels
For me personally my gradings would be:
S: 6
A:9, 12, 16
B:3, 4, 5, 10, 13, 15
C:1, 2, 7, 8
I graded based on my opinions of the games quality not how I like them. Although two of them I graded as a B my top 3 favorites are 3, 6, and 13.
FFVI was my 1st FF game. Appreciate the backstory on VI as I also did the NUMEROUS rentals at BB and I kept dying on the tower (didn’t know about auto-revive😂). Went back later and played origins, chronicles and anthology. I would say VII (along w/ FFT) are my fav followed by VI, and then FFX. I also loved FFXIII. I did find VIII tedious, especially XII…only FF I haven’t finished.
I'm glad to see 13 ranked highly here because I currently have it and a refurbished PS3 coming from Amazon lol. It's the only FF mainline game I haven't played yet.

@@JRPGLife Update: I loved it. It's not my favorite but it's in my top somewhere. Vanille and Sazh had some of the most powerful moments in the series. Paradigm system was a nice change of pace. And now, 13-2 is ordered and on the way.

Nostalgia wise, four and six. Absolute beauties. Wonderful games.
However, five has really grown on me over the last 5 years. Pardon of the pun. Not only the challenge of the game but there are so many different ways to play the game thanks to that job system. Want to challenge yourself to beat the game with all white mages?! Go ahead! See if you can get past the boat graveyard with all thieves! Better bring a ton of pots!

Great did, I respect the list. I'm finally hanging up the cleats on the series. I've played every FF up until 15 and FF7 remake. I am disappointed with what they're doing with FF7, I think it would've made more sense to do what they're doing with FF8, but eh.. it's w/e now.
My first consoles were my father's Atari😂 and NES and one of the games he had was FF1, so that was my first FF experience. SNES FF3 was my favorite for the longest time, as a matter of fact it's probably what got me hooked on FF. I still remember having a FF3 poster up on my wall in my room as a kid. Eventually FF10 took that #1 spot and for my least favorite I'd have to go with 9.

FF 10 is my favorite, the story holds a place in my heart, loved the characters loved the combat, loved the story. My least favorite would be probably 15. Also one thing i hate about 9 is the character models. FF8 looks sooo much better then ff9. The combat system in 9 is ehh. But black mage vivie is cool af in 9. Main character in 9 i hate like probably more then every ff character ever. But in saying that I enjoy the story.

I'm sorry but I can't agree about Lightning Returns. It's such a great game. It's fun and the story isn't convulted at all in my opinion. I would rather say it's deep. But I'm a big fantasy and sci-fi fan. But I'm so happy you guys loved FFVIII (my first ever FF game) and FFXIII (what a great fun game).

Few people will understand the magic that was FF8. I was lucky enough to get it on my birthday when I was 12. Playing it now compared to when it was fresh isn't a fair review.
Oh yeah almost forgot, thanks for showing FF8 original footage. I hated how they ruined Squall's hair, essentially making it a comb over instead of spiky. They ruined Rinoa as well.

My favorite Final Fantasy is 2 (SNES; IV Japanese) and my least favorite was 8 (PS). I stopped playing Final Fantasy games after 9 (PS) because I just don't like the more open world/MMORPG/Purchase content type games.

Never even cared enough about 13-2 and Lightning Returns to be able to rank them but I def didn’t like 13. Also I love the Blockbuster shoutout. I used to be a manager at one until we just all of a sudden shut down. 😂😂😂. We used to get 7 free rentals (games included) a week. It was niiiice.

I don't really have an opinion to give on the franchise since I only recently played 7, and 7 remake, which were great. Would even go as far as putting original 7 it in my top 5 games of all time, which is very shocking since I don't really play JRPG games at all. Good refrence list to keep in mind tho. Will probably be ff6 next, since so many people talk about it. Or perhaps 13 considering you both put it Above 7 and next to 6.
13 is highly recommended 😀
As someone who's been wanting to get into the series for a long time, this definitely gives me some ideas on which ones I'd like and which I wouldn't. Great discussion! One question, where would you guys rank VII Remake? (Sorry if I missed that, if it was discussed) Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how that compares to the original for you (Although maybe it's premature to say since only part one is out)
We didn't include remakes in this list, but we both enjoyed the remake a lot. Personally (Dan) I liked the remake better than the original 😀

Oh man! Relatable memories 😅
I started playing every FF game a week ago. The only FF game I've ever played before that were VII and VIII and I of course love that game. I've only managed to play up to VI for now so I can't rate every game. But VII is still my favorite. But VI is actually not far behind. In fact, I'm having a blast playing it right now and I'm only at The Returner's hideout. Can't say much about the story but the gameplay is super fun. Especially Edgar's tools are extremely good, he is might favorite char so far. But Sabin's Blitz is also awesome and deals massive damage. And the fact that in theory everyone can use spells and summons is what I really like about this game. That's exactly why I didn't like the other games too much. The gameplay is too one-dimensional. In many of them magic isn't even viable, but the physical attackers don't really have any gimmicks. So for the most part it's just button smashing and that's not fun for me. FFVI did it right. Not everyone nees to be a magic user but they still should have some gimmick and versatility. Wether it's Edgar's tools or Shadow's Throw. FFVII also did it right with the command materia and limit breaks. Though that everyone can potentially use magic in these two games are a plus for me too. So for now my ranking is
8. II for obvious reaons
7. VIII once again, for obvious reaons.
6. III. Too much grinding for the jobs, at the beginning they are all very weak. and again, too much button smashing.
5. V. A better version of III but still the same problem with the job system.
4. IV. No job system but still classes. Once again too much button smashing.
3. I. Too much button smashing too but spells are at least somewhat viable.
2. VI. The only FF pixel game I don't just like but thoroughly enjoy. Great story and characters, great music and very well thought out game mechanics. Everyone can use magic but most importantly they all have their own gimmicks. Really liking Edgar's tools, they made the game so far very easy. Sabin's Blitz is also fun to use. Also like the Relics. FFVI certainly isn't too far behind VII.
1. VII. Nothing to say here. A perfect game and still the best FF game ever. For now. Might change once I continue.

I have not played that many but my least favorite so far is FF 15

Ff 2/3 guy (4/6). Also loved ff adventure, sword & secret of mana. Ff legend 2 was good also. Haven’t played an rpg in so long. Maybe I need to go back to it? Played sea of stars?

@@JRPGLife I enjoyed Zodiac Age a lot more than the PS2 version (solely because of the speed boost), but still didn't love how much the story dragged and the fact that every boss was just another monster in another large room. And I missed Nobuo more in 12 than any other game 😋
My favorite is snes FF6 or FF3 in NA
And my least liked but enjoyed many tines is ff10 and 10-2 on ps2

If you ever want to get a feel for 11 try out HorizonXI. That said, pretty sure only those of us who were on there originally have the requisite stockholm syndrome to really get into it. Such a brutal game.
14 people swear by, and I've put a ton of time into, but its tedium is in all the boring main-line quests and I find the theme-park dungeons really annoying and boring. I really love exploration and 14 really does not have that, where 11 did, but 11 is really hard and you die for trying to explore... haha.
Final Fantasy XIII and XII are amazing games with amazing storylines and if I can add XIV to the mix then these three are my favorites. The sound tracks on both Final fantasy XII and XIII are sooooo good I still listen to them to this day.

While in gameplay and story for 13 and 12 wasn’t to my liking (12 gameplay and story was pretty good. Just not as good as others). I do agree there sound tracks was great. One thing that all ff have is good sound tracks.

Great list vid, not really a fan of them but I do like your content so I can't not watch. My favorite is the obvious on the room being 7. I wasn't a huge rpg gamer but when I played this game, I didn't put it down. I played that game more than any other game, close 2nd being vid and some nes/sega cd freshness. I liked 9 and 8, I couldn't get into it. I think I'll give it another shot at some point though. An old friend loved playing rpgs and I think I liked watching watching them more honestly. 💪🔥🙌🎄✨️

Final Fantasy III came out for PSP/Vita, in English, but digital only. Just letting you know… I am also a physical person, but it is a slightly superior version to the DS…
