      In hawaii, me and my friends all foil now,the fun and feeling of gliding and carving as opposed to chattering on the water trying to hold a rail makes winging the most fun. You can see that on days like this video,windsurfing and kiting are great (for last 35 years)
      At our local wave spot it's not untill the wind hits 25 and the swell gets a face height of at least 6 to 8 feet that windsurfing is not anti climactic. These guys are ripping it up in great conditions but we all can't be them.

    I started windsurfing in 1981. I started to race one design by mid 80’s competitive slalom by
    early 90’s and eventually competitive wave. For a good 20 yrs windsurfing was with out a doubt the RADIST small craft wind sport there was. It’s not underrated, there are just far more super fun small craft wind driven toys to play with now than there were in the 80 & 90s. I’ll never stop windsurfing, but I sure do like to do all the wind sports that are a direct link to what windsurfing started. But, I’ll never forget how it all started for me. WINDSURFING!

    • @TheGrumpyStone
      @TheGrumpyStone Год назад +2

      Agreed 100%. It is not underrated, but becoming outdated quite fast. There is constantly growing kite community and foil is taking huge leaps to glory. Arguably, wing foil is smaller, more agile, more fun way to ride, and to me is a direct ancestor of windsurfing 🙄
      World and toys are changing 😎

    • @hubert_an
      @hubert_an Год назад +2

      Windsurfing is super difficult sport compared to kitesurfing. I love it started it when there was 50:50 ratio of wind to kite surfers. Doing jumps like these on video is world class level and even those pros have difficulty of landing these tricks. Compared to kitesurfing where doing some basic jumps and tricks is relatively easy and more advanced amateurs can land these tricks pretty reliably

    • @TheGrumpyStone
      @TheGrumpyStone Год назад

      @@hubert_an , I hear what you are saying. I have massive respect for the windsurfers and I enjoy sharing spots with them, it all adds up to a nice surfing & sport vibe.
      What I was trying to say is that there are types of equipment that can allow people to get to certain “adrenaline injection” easier. If you want to jump higher - you would prefer trampoline over brick shoes ;)
      Thus, my point was about wing+foil, which look similar, packs smaller, entry into discipline is arguably lower, and fellas on the water, doing what they enjoy with less efforts, so people pick those over windsurf more often. 🤷‍♂️
      Same with the e-bike: if you enjoy long trails, but physically would not be able to do it on a conventional MTB, this is an opener to experience you otherwise would have skipped

      I started sailing in 1983 and it became my life. My first board was an O’Brien Sensation (a 70 lbs beast similar to a one design). I was only 13 years old and a girl. I lived in Washington DC and was the only female sailor for years. And I was hardcore. I would sail on the Potomac at a park right next to the Pentagon nearly 365 days a year. By parents knew I was weird so they relented (for safety sake) and bought me a dry suit. I have to admit that I preferred the freezing 8mm wetsuits to the dry suit because it was so claustrophobic and took a good 45 minutes to put on and longer to take off. Plus those little trickles of freezing water that would leak in at the neck during wipeouts felt like being tased. But I would sail when the Potomac was frozen over except for the small area near the boat launch where boat traffic broke up the ice. Shout out to Windsurfing Unlimited in those days.
      Again, I was a weird girl. I went to a very proper private girl’s school where I had to toe the line. But outside of school I was obsessed with windsurfing and DC punk rock. When I wasn’t sailing I was playing guitar and/or drums in various DC punk bands. Those were the days.
      My parents begged me to go to law school. So I went to Georgetown and continued sailing. And during summer break I would pretend that I had a passion for property law and would go intern for the Pacific Legal Foundation on Oahu. And I was a fixture at Kailua as I never showed up for work. But, admittedly, summer sailing on Oahu is lame. So when I finally graduated from law school I worked for a law firm for a year and then became a board shaper and moved to Guarda and then Iseo. I loved the advent of freestyle because it reminded me of skateboarding. So I was building extra wide but stubby round nose boards that could plane quickly and h just enough volume to enable sailors to land tricks on the nose while maintaining a degree of speed. F2 eventually made a board like mine called the Air. Josh Stone promoted it. The only problem was that it worked great on the Italian Glacier lakes but sucked in real ocean chop.
      So I moved to Maui and got into building gunny big wave boards. I love big waves but not stuff like Jaws. My favorite spot is Lanes on a Kona wind. With Ho’okipa size waves but with the smooth rampiness of Sprecks you could launch a slalom board into the stratosphere over and over again on every run. I miss those days 😔.
      At 53 yo I only have memories. I live in South Carolina now and we may get 18 knots in the afternoon if we are really lucky. I was a sail snob when I was younger. I wouldn’t rig up unless I was at least on a 4.8. Now I ride either a 6.5 or 5.8. I haven’t had the opportunity to rig anything smaller in years.
      Oh, but I do have memories. I have nearly every board, boom, mast, etc . . . that I’ve ever owned. I built my own private museum on my property. I have the first teak sailing booms and teak mast foot universal. It’s my private Louvre.

    To be that good at Windsurfing takes many years, great fitness and the right conditions. And nobody outside understands that e.g. a Kiter, Winger and Foiler in general had an easier path to look great on water. Most people want to just show off and need therefore easy wins, not something which is hard but nobody appreciates.

      Agree! I learned windsurfing in the Delta, Gorge, and Berkley Marina.... It is super hard to get this good. There are many amazing athletes, but this really takes the most talent IMHO. Tremendous amount of endurance, agility and strength beyond many other sports.

    Ok I know I’m late but I have to give credit to these wind warriors as they are doing all these insane maneuvers in on shore wind - a much higher level of difficulty

    Man! I SOOOOOOO miss doing that! Still got my short boards but no other gear 😞 And now, I live way too far from the water. Bring on climate change so the water levels rise and I can get back into it! Absolutely one of the 2 best sports on the planet, along with riding dirt bikes!

    I grew up wave sailing on Lake Erie, then moved to a much smaller lake. I don't miss getting started, but I do miss riding those swells!
