I too am in B.C. for the last 81 years, very familiar with power saws and all aspects of logging. Your setup of going up and down that river offers the most potential for a disaster. If you for some reason had to evacuate because of severe cut or broken bone you would be hooped. If it were me doing what you are, I would hack a trail , assuming you are on the same side of the river as the highway , out to the highway. It is nice to have a shelter but that should come after some way to evacuate .
I sure hope you are building at least 10 to 20 ft. above that high water line ! Rivers are beautiful but can be deadly , ice break up with flooding, high above average water levels etc ! Stay safe
I love how down to earth this channel is. Just a normal guy like the rest of us, living out his dream and making it work as best he can. I'm excited to see more, videos like this keep me grinding in college. Gives me something to look forward to.
Good to see a fellow Canadian struggling through the rough times to live his dream! Appreciate you showing the ‘reality’ of this fantasy many of us share.
I lived up in Northern BC for many years… beautiful country to say the least. One thing a person learns real fast is to have respect for the river that’s for sure. Seeing those majestic trees and just the landscape… I actually miss that wilderness. You have a peace of heaven, Enjoy!
New to your channel. GORGEOUS property & country!! Sorry about your vehicle.. FYI for the future, eggs can actually be cooked whole in their shell in the hot coals of a fire. Also, besides bear spray, I've seen an AIR HORN work great to scare bears when shouting did NOT work & other wild animals don't like the loud noise of an air horn, will save you money on ammunition too. Thanks for sharing your build & adventure!! ☺️
Going back and commmenting so you can get RUclips rich. Such an inspiration, makes me wanna start, seeing someone start this from scratch is so inspiring.
Sounds like my kinda place ,very little people waking up to those beautiful views will make you appreciate the tough times, my 2006 Suzuki is still going it breaks down regularly it’s had a new engine and 2 gear boxes so it’s practically brand new, stay positive.
It is really tuff starting with nothing, and that commute there is pretty long, upstream too, holy cow! That really sucked about your car, although, the van is way more convenient. I know for sure you will never forget cooking stuff, ever! Pretty cool to watch, thanks.
Man i love your channel. Love how raw it is and love how you show us the whole adventure, not only the good times but challenges too. Im checking the channel daily waiting for your video. Good luck have fun from Italy.
Very good. I just found your channel. You're ability to work has astonished me. You are in the top class of workers. Well done bud. This will be my favorite show.
I just found your channel also. I spend 100% of my time in the outdoors. I would build a helicopter landing site incase of emergency . You don't seem to advertise your exact location...smart I use trail cameras. Good luck
"New' vehicle acquisition music sounded a lot like Mt Eden Dubstep, a project out of tiny little New Zealand, which was pretty cool! Hey man, gas is the same here if not more expensive! Keep at it mate, we are all watching and hoping the best for you living your dream :)
I cannot get over that BEAUTY of a tree... wow!! Stunning! 😲😃 And I saw that that river flows incredibly fast.. watch out that you do not build close to her, I bet that when the ice starts to melt and the ice floe's (? Is that the right word for big sheets of crushed ice? 🤔😅 ) comes through, that crushes everything.. What a bad luck to have this happening with your car.. worst time! Hopefully you are now more adjusted to the surroundings, the way to get about things and start to get a flow, regularity about your days. I am very interested in what you are working for and you go and get what you want! Yes, it isn't easy but one day at a time and you get there 💪👍😃 Be safe out there and watch yourself, okay? 👌😎
Just joined your channel and must say I am VERY impressed with how you have stuck with it and overcome a number of challenges that would likely have made a lesser man throw in the towel. Keep up the good fight! With each episode more of your dream will come alive and make it all worthwhile. Thanks for sharing!! 👍👍👍
Can't wait for the next one, this is neat to see close to home. I don't live around there anymore but I do spend a bit of time in "town" for work. Couldn't believe how much the river rose this year. Best of luck to you.
Fellow B.C. boy here. Great videos, I saw the first and was hooked. I spend a lot of time in bush with my permitted placer mine, you however are “back to basics” compared to what we’re up too. Much respect for what you’re doing.
Hello from Alberta!! You are living my dream, (just without me doing any labour...😉) Keep on keeping' on mate!! Great Job!!! Can't wait to see your subs build too...
Perfect example of our wonderful Canadian accents lol if anyone in the world is wondering most of the west sounds exactly like this hahaha I never really noticed it until now but yea I love how Canadian he sounds hahaha
The water on our river can rise many feet outside it's banks. Depending on the rain. We have seen it rise 22 feet in winter and early Spring. Water will cover the land for miles out away from the river.
Are you going to tell us a bit about yourself? Whats your name? What made you do something so daring! Is your family worried? Love the videos! It allows me to have an adventure from the safety of my sofa! 😅Greetings from Vienna, Austria!
YES MAN!! SO EXICTING TO FOLLOW ALONG YOUR JOURNEY. AMAZING CONTENT. RAWEST OF THE RAW. YOU HAVE BALLS OF STEEL. I WAS SO PUMPED TO SEE YOU POSTED AGAIN. GOTTA SHARE WITH MY BUDDIES @ WORK TOMORROW. I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT VIDEO. MUCH LOVE BROTHA AND STAY SAFE.
Awesome Progress brother. Just getting into your awesome videos and content now one after another. I realize that I am about 10 months or so behind!! lol
This is one heck of an adventure (misadventure too), I am along for the ride. Though a few too many miles away to offer help... Before you buy a wireless mic, get a cast iron fry pan! Keep going...
Had a quick look and maybe I missed it, but have you considering signing up for Patreon’s to help fund your journey? (you certainly have the views already, and I’d bet people would be keen to help you along!… I know I would.. and hey! all the pennies add up!!!). Thanks for sharing and the effort it takes over and above what you’re already doing!
What area is this in,Kootenays? You could build a bear platform, which is just a flat platform 8 feet off the ground, with ladder. I'd left those trees on the bank to prevent erosion,as you've seen the river rises a lot after rain, just imagine spring thaw flooding!!
About the trees on the bank, I absolutely would do that, too! I would even leave the bigger one's standing in the, what is going to be your front yard. It holds the soil together in years that are wet. But you can cut some clearance. Just be smart with it, which is what I'm trying to say ☺️
In the first video I thought he mentioned he was 10 hours from home but doesn't say where that is. Also mentions spending some time in the West Kootenay but again doesn't say that is home. He's definitely not in the Kootenays as we don't have any silty river like this. Looks like the Fraser to me but the mountains aren't right, maybe the Skeena?
this seems like a really tough task, but you are driven and I commend you! btw, both the quad and the van would have been much more expensive here on the east coast of US, but you gasoline is much more expensive. Great videos. I subscribed and will follow along!
You got your work cut out for you. I have done it myself. It took me ten years to build my place from raw land. Be ready for lots of frustration. When something isn't going well switch to working on something else.
Shawn I'm stoked to see you starting this project and I will be following along, I think you are my new favorite channel as I have a similar project in the works on the other big river in this province. Anyhow you've done pretty well keeping this project on the DL but to someone with the right remote property research skills it's ❎ Anyhow I have a few ideas for you for different building methods and transportation options, would love to connect with you RE ideas for remote building challenges in bc Cheers, I'm looking forward to your next video!
Respect pal..thats a challenge!!! I think I would clear an area for a heli pad for emergency, you loose that boat with the current that would suck. I think I would be having a few back up plans just been so remote, (first aid etc) Shame you couldn't barge a skid steer/small excavator in....doing everything manually will knock the crap outta you. If you can find a 1.7 ton excavator in the budget you will be able to make leaps and bounds with progress...anyhow looking forward to more content...
Well done bro just givining it a go. Hope you find the right partner to work together. Im looking at land and my partner is already saying no but she will visit lol
Not sure about the size of the building you're planning on building, and possibly other future projects, but I'd seriously consider getting a sawmill up there sooner rather than later. Hauling all that lumber on a small boat ... not to mention the price of it ... a sawmill can pay for itself even on smaller builds.
I am so excited for you to follow your journey how far is it from basecamp to you’re a piece of land that is so much work back and forth with all that lumber well at least you have a van now black bears are not to bad but grizzly bears they don’t care if your in there space look out have a great week and weekend here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
Awesome start!! If you get time check out Far North Bushcraft and Survival! They haven't put out a video in a few months, but they live in Alaska and built their cabin and have lived off grid for many years! They can give you many ideas on dealing with bears! Lonnie showes how to make heated tents and tent stoves as well as many other things!
Nice to see you back! I subscribed on your previous video and wish you the best as you work on your property! I’m sure you’ll turn it into an awesome spot! T!
Great content. My opinions mean nothing but a few things. A chainsaw mill would have saved you so much money. Going on a river in a remote area with no oars as back up? A cheap pull behind boat would help with supplies and also be good for backup if one of your boats fails. Trappers cabins were small and did stand the test of time. Why wasn't that viable. Would have saved thousands of dollars and trips. Shelter is always #1. Everything that can be hand sawn should be to conserve gas. Unless you have unlimited income and that doesn't matter. Just things to think about. Thanks for sharing your adventures. God Bless.
Shawn, it seems like if you went farther up the bridge road paralleling the main river… you may be within closer proximity of the tributary/property area?
I too am in B.C. for the last 81 years, very familiar with power saws and all aspects of logging. Your setup of going up and down that river offers the most potential for a disaster. This dude has bigger balls than anybody doing this off grid stuff. Not glamorous, limited on money, hard work. Can’t wait to watch all these
Good to see a fellow Canadian struggling through the rough times to live his dream! Appreciate you showing the ‘reality’ of this fantasy many of us share.
I am living vicariously through your videos!
Of the hundreds of youtube channels I'm subscribed to, yours is the one I'm most excited to see more of

Buy or make
some OARS dude! If the engine quits, you can still have control of the boat and head back downstream. 😵
Love this guy ...shabby vintage equipment and a sense of humour!
OK, I'm just catching up starting with video 1, I'm hooked,
New to your channel. GORGEOUS property & country!! Sorry about your vehicle.. FYI for the future, eggs can actually be cooked whole in their shell in the hot coals of a fire. Impressive. Give you credit for your determination to make this happen. Looking forward to more of your journey.
I dont know if it's determination or sheer stupidity. Gotta watch some more to find out. 😅
Going back and commmenting so you can get RUclips rich. Such an inspiration, makes me wanna start, seeing someone start this from scratch is so inspiring.

I resonate with you regarding using shop bought timber to build quicker, as that is what i did.
Just joined your channel and must say I am VERY impressed with how you have stuck with it and overcome a number of challenges that would likely have made a lesser man throw in the towel. Keep up the good fight! With each episode more of your dream will come alive and make it all worthwhile. Thanks for sharing!! 👍👍👍
Greetings from SW Ontario. Nothing like that scenery around here. Admire your effort and determination.
If you want to go nuts on your van, you can put a 4x4 transfer case on it. I love your series so far. Keep them coming.
Shawn. You’re my hero ❤️

I'm doing something somewhat similar in Central Canada. I know the feeling of a remote slice of nature and the prospects of things to come.
Here in Australia a shovel is also a long handled frying pan.
Your determined ill give you that.your proving that one can overcome a host of reasons to not give up.wishing you well on your great adventure.
Hi amazing stuff I wish you all the very best from the UK 👍
Hey! Fellow Canadian here, but I’m in Ontario. I really want to do what you’re doing…wish I could join you 😉
Cool video. Keep them coming
Don't apologize for doing things the way that works best for you. ps- i don't sleep in tents in bear country either.
Love what you're doing,,keep going forward to your new life
Perfect example of our wonderful Canadian accents lol if anyone in the world is wondering most of the west sounds exactly like this hahaha I never really noticed it until now but yea I love how Canadian he sounds hahaha
Greetings from Tasmania. Thoroughly enjoying your videos. Such a challenging place to build, can't wait to continue watching your journey.

Leave the eggs in the shell. Set around the edge of the fire or grill. Sorta like a baked boiled egg.

love the storytelling and this kind of project! keep it up and stay safe
Hats of 2 you....wow....
yesss so excited I caught this. Episode 1 was a great watch
Must be a lot of shail rock around there. Cook on that..
Bad idea to cook in those cans, they have a plastic liner.
Just started watching your series, really feeling how stressed you are. Hoping things get easier on you!
... as long as .. You are happy !!! .. it will be OK ! ... Voila ! ... when some work is done ...

Hello, land looking good,
Love the videos man, keep up the good work!
I hope your armed when your out there due to all the bears and cougars, stay safe!
Interesting channel. I've subscribed.
You need to make a list of the things you need to get that way you don't forget

FYI, Astro vans have fiberglass rear leaf springs that will take a lot of weight but you should consult manufacturer's specs when loading !

Awesome!!!!!!

Love your videos and tenacity to keep going!! Are you on Vancouver Island? 🇨🇦
