I once spoke to a survivor as a child. I was in my elementary class and we had a Q&A with the man. One child asked him what was the worst thing he saw. All he could get out was "I saw a Nazi rip off..." And he just bursts into tears. I always wondered what he was going to say. But I'm honestly glad he never finished that sentenced.
THIS THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE- THIS IS WHY IM CAREFUL OF WHAT I ASK AND SAY. He could’ve gotten the worst flashback ever of a nazi cutting off someone’s head and it’s sad that they were just a kid who didn’t know any better because they were just talking talking thinking of what to say this comment ruined my day. This is why the younger generation needs to listen to elderly people more often. You never know what kind of stories they have in store, or the pain they suffered like Mr. Friedman did back during the war. What an inspiring story, and the Holocaust is nothing to laugh about.

My grandfather is Jewish and lived in Austria during the Holocaust. Both his parents were killed in concentration camps. Who wouldn't? Like I'm an Indian... I am hella intrigued
@Valeria Melissa Garcia Alvarado it’s not just that, cause there are non Jews who want to know about the Holocaust. I was one of two Jewish students in a Holocaust class, most of my friends in the class were non Jews, and they’d come to me with questions about Judaism and the Holocaust, cause they wanted to make sure that it would never happen again.
They are told what to ask.
"Would you help someone if it meant putting your life in danger?"

The problem is it would probably not only be your life, but also the life of your children, of your spouse, of your parents. That's what makes the choice hard.
Right now I think I would but in the moment i might honestly not 😥

Our generation will be the last to have Holocaust survivors here, it’s absolutely mind blowing. Zara: "At what point, did you feel safe from religious persecution?"
Henry: "I never have felt that, to be honest with you. In this country, we still have hatred. It hasn't disappeared."
This seems particularly haunting given that the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting occurred 2 weeks after this video upload. We need to learn our history, or we are forced to repeat it.

I don't think the two can be seen as "equals". Some did it because they feared for their lives. Not forgivable, but understandable. Who DID this was a criminal and they got punished for that. They also knew how to convince people to give them Jewish refugees, like giving food or money, things that were running out during war. I don't feel like I should blame people for this, as war is something I wouldn't wish even to my worst enemy and you don't really know how you would go through it until you live it. BUT, I'd rather focus myself on remembering the good people who hid children or entire families, putting their own lives at risk just because being human was illegal.
I kinda agree but you have to think about that those who tried to do something against it were put in jail or even in the concentration camps themselves. I think many people were just scared. But because of this it’s also important to praise those even more who were brave enough to do something against it f.e. the siblings Scholl or Schindler (many more)

You must understand, the rest of the world isn't as individualistic as the United States. There is a sense of _national_ identity, and that each person is a representation of the country as a whole. Likewise, each person is also a reflection of their country.
So the country's actions, past and present, are the burden- or pride- of each individual. There are individual Germans, but there is also Germany. Not the government, not the land, but the nation itself. Same with Russia, China, India, etc.
So, for instance, the Russians feel pride for winning WWII, despite any Russian under ~80 years old never even having taken part. They also feel sadness for the Soviet Union collapsing, pride for Yuri Gagarin, happiness for Tchaikovsky, and so on. Because you are still part of the same nation, the actions of your ancestors are understood to be just as likely done by you.
What makes you fundamentally more self-aware or 'holier' than every other generation of your nation before or after you? Nothing. So for a nation at any time to do something horrible is a reflection on all of the generations- or at least the ones following the incident. At the very least, it is a permanent mark on the history of your nation.
I literally can not express how happy i am that Henry is still hear to talk about what he went through. Lot's of love for Henry

Woogie me too I’m almost started crying because he reminds me of my grandpa
We think quarantine is hard....he had to go 18 months in quarantine jeez
And in a really small place with a little to no food at all :(
It’s technically not like that at all.
I've been stuck in "quarantine" for nearly two years, in a mental facility for my depression and struggle with going to school. 2 years of my life and my teenage years have been stolen from me. I can barely see my loved ones and I've only gotten more traumatised in here. They've never done anything to help me, not even once. It only lasts a couple months for y'all, but it's been 2 years and counting with no end in sight for me. Please be grateful.
colorbar.s sounds like physical and depressing hell,i reallly do feel bad for you.. But im sorry but i still think sitting, hungry, crying, thirsty, starting at the sky that you would of never seen or experienced. Thinking every day for 18 months,“Can i still experience life..“
Everynight hearing gunshots,Praying some of them dont hit YOU.Then in the day hear everyone playingg and having absolute fun..while youre staring into complete darkness.Every hour must of felt like days for this absolutely amazing man.that is what i call Fear, and Pain
Then after 18 months of absolute hunger and pain you finally see the light of day..im so happy this amazing man didnt just end it all.I would of..
@@colorbar.s get out of there when youre 18, liberate yourself and be strong
Bless these children and this man. This was a fantastic conversation for them all to have. The parents and teachers of these young people should be so proud.
What a wonderful effect his story had on these children. God bless all of them.
“You have a beautiful smile” 😭❤️
“ I still see those big eyes looking at me.. helplessly..”...💔
*i remember being about 9 or 10 and learning about the Holocaust for the first time, and it shook me so bad i cried* 💔
this mans voice just makes me want to listen
his life made me want to cry
he is so inspirational
why did people dislike this video?
The pause Sandor makes after saying he's Jewish, you can feel how much he's trying to hold his emotions. It made me almost cry.

Thank you for making this video! I’ve met a survivor at the Holocaust museum in DC and she told me her story. It’s so important to learn about this. It affected not only the ones trapped and killed and their families. It affected most of the world. Thank you 🙏
There's no way I could sit with this man and listen to his story without crying. Hell I'm crying now.
Wow, the amount of self reflection and humbleness that comes out of him is insane. He even says that he wouldnt know what he would do in the situation.
I understand that those kids think they would have hid the families, but in all likely hood they wouldnt have. Most people in our society today dont want to be confrotation with people because of a little conflict, and the vast majority of people would not have done it
Before I had a kid, I probably would have, but afterward, I feel like a horrible person for the way I'd probably have to answer that. It hit me pretty hard. I'm definitely not the idealist I was in my 20s, and it hurts. I think everyone thinks they'd be brave or clever enough to hide a family, but the searches seemed really, really thorough, and to risk your own kids' lives... not so easy to wrestle with. I hope we're never faced with choices like that.
@@Synicizm it is just natural to keep your children safe. I am a mother too and would NEVER risk them. But I guess you need to live sth like that to really know what you would actually do.
Hey, I get that most people wouldn't. Hell, I don't know if push came to shove, I would. But putting it as "today's generation" is absolutely undeserved. This generation has done so much for equality and acceptance and fighting for rights even if that means losing their privilege. Or have you forgotten that the LGBTQIA+ communtity continues to stand up for themselves even as they are killed for it, and a lot of straight allies do the same? That people, regardless of their skin color, have attended BLM protests risking their life in the process? So don't you dare make this a "Oh look Gen Z and Millennials are such weaklings and unempathetic" BS.
I think the man was gently and compassionately trying to make that very point to them.... basically implying “yeah, you think now that you would risk your life, but it’s very possible you would not.”
The 2 Jewish kids I think made this video. They have the deeper basic understanding of the culture and knew the questions to ask because they came from it. Everyone else was asking good questions but the 2 kids had such a true interest in the topic.
It amazes me some of the questions these kids ask in your videos. Questions that I, myself, wouldn't even have thought of. This is a learning experience for me too... And I'm 39! LOVE IT!!!!
My grandma was born in 1925 and shes still alive!
God bless her
My great grandmother died a couple of months ago at 99 she survived the holocaust im orthodox Jewish
I feel very lucky to have been able to speak with a survivor at school. It was Elie Wiesel, his experience was similar in being stuck in an attic for years. Soon these people will gone and I think it is important to hear their stories. Thank you to those who speak about their experiences. Hearing stories like these expand our knowledge on the past. Thank you for this video.
I had a project about his book "night", a realy hard story
Sage Rains I might be confusing names, I am sorry if I am.
Night is one of the most powerful stories ever written
Schlomoe Rabinoezisblattgoldbergstein Yes, very freakish
That is very cool that you got to meet him.
“It isn’t just the perpetrators that are bad. It’s people that stand by and let it happen.”
his smile lifted my mood so much i hope he’s doing good now
Can we talk about how good his memory is? I know this was trauma, but even so, most people don't remember so many specific details for 80 years
THIS kind of horrors people don't forget.. it's all very vivid.
Many holocaust survivors always say that even if their memory deteriorates, they will never be able to forget the atrocities they went through, in the most detailed way possible.

these children are getting absolutely blessed with wisdom and knowledge. they have a MASSIVE privilege to even meet someone like this man. if i had the chance, i would be there talking all day
Wow. This man is 90 years old and sharp as a tack with a memory like an iron trap, such a kind demeanor and a really accepting heart. Such a wonderful wonderful person.
When you begin to doubt yourself remember everything your ancestors went through for you to be here. You come from a legacy of survival that is never to be questioned.
We need more awareness to our younger generations about these events and others like them. We are seeing signs of this dangerous path once again. Our children need to know the warning signs and know when to defend against them as they get older. Bless this man and these children.
I think we need the elderly people and their wisdom more than ever.
"I wanted to know what is was liketo have a full stomach"?
That hit me hard. Made me cry! He must have been so terrified. I cannot even begin to imagine what he was going through at such a young age! People are cruel.
I recently learned about anti semitism at school n while listening to this man I could imagine what all he would have gone through.....May he always stay blessed🙏🙏
Paul Metcalf wtf not even half of this is true lmao
@Paul Metcalf this literally sounds like white / anglo saxon people
@Paul Metcalf youre saying that as if every single individual there is of the same ethnicity, pure ignorance. If you werent aware theres countless of mixed people at this point, no matter how big a percentage, so all of your statements are legitimately invalid. Of course you'll find those with predominantly x race or ethnicity, whats the wrong in that? In america, ive met countless of white people as they take up a lot of where i live in PA. I'm not gonna say all of them are racist or do evil things, even when stats show they're embedded with subtle racism against colored people (shown in preferences, death sentence, comfort, police brutality, etc.). You choose to be hateful.
@Paul Metcalf when did i blame anyone for that? Id like you to show me where in my comments have i blamed anyone for the holocaust? Thats not my history, im not german, polish, etc. If it were to involve the U.S' horrific acts such as hiroshima, nagasaki, and vietnam, id talk about how horrible and responsible the US is for days as i am american. And since you thinking talking about the holocaust is spreading lies, im guessing youre a holocaust denier?
@Paul Metcalf yeah its really not worth talking to you if you wont enlighten yourself.
I'm in absolute tears listening to this.. how someone can put someone through that is horrorific.
can't believe how much pain , fear and hopelessness these people went through , also cannot believe the kids asking such intelligent questions

Emilia, no need to. You are not responsible for what others do or did.
It's not your fault. You didn't commit any atrocities. I'm sure you're a good person and you obviously have empathy. Live your best life and do everything you can to be a good person. That's what matters.

The brother and sister here have such a genuine curiosity and respect for Henry's story and their own history. Good for them and good on their parents for instilling in them the importance of who they are and where they came from. But, even more so, for teaching them the value of hearing another's story. I hope they continue to search for such wisdom throughout life.
