I once spoke to a survivor as a child. I was in my elementary class and we had a Q&A with the man. One child asked him what was the worst thing he saw. All he could get out was "I saw a Nazi rip off..." And he just bursts into tears. I always wondered what he was going to say. But I'm honestly glad he never finished that sentenced.

The problem is it would probably not only be your life, but also the life of your children, of your spouse, of your parents. That's what makes the choice hard.
Ruben I feel like it depends on how you die. If it’s a quick death I reckon many people would sacrifice themselves for others. But if it’s a slow, painful death, I’m not sure how many would sacrifice themselves.
We talked about this quastion many times in my family, I probably would've done it, if I had no family, who I would endanger by doing it, but as soon as I have children, I wouldn't do it anymore

Zara: "At what point, did you feel safe from religious persecution?" Henry: "I never have felt that, to be honest with you. In this country, we still have hatred. It hasn't disappeared." This seems particularly haunting given that the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting occurred 2 weeks after this video upload. We need to learn our history, or we are forced to repeat it.
@Chick Fil A first off, remains decompose in a relatively decent amount of time and it doesn't take much for the environment to do away with ashes. Crazy to think that we’re one of the last generations to see holocaust survivors. I had the privilege of listening to a holocaust survivor at my school, I will always remember that.
True that, about last generation to see & hear folks who were there. But also the intergenerational trauma that continues to affect people to this day 😔💔
Me too, back in 2016 I got to meet this nice lady that survived the Holocaust, and I kinda feel bad now looking back because all my class mates weren’t paying attention and didn’t cared about her presence, I feel so blessed to be in the same room as her ❤️
i think it's very awesome that they asked him about if he would hide people or not. my grandmother's uncle died at Daschau as a political prisoner, he was not Jewish himself but he helped a lot of people hide in France. He was eventually caught and died less than three days after Daschau was liberated. He saved so many lives, but because of that, he gave his own. He's my hero.
This is why the younger generation needs to listen to elderly people more often. You never know what kind of stories they have in store, or the pain they suffered like Mr. Friedman did back during the war. What an inspiring story, and the Holocaust is nothing to laugh about.
If only elders in my country are as open minded and soft spoken as him. I would even ask some elders how their life was and if i asked questions they would get mad because i was interfering like wtf
In my opinion, all the generations need to listen to each other, there’s young people with stories to tell also, humanity would be so much better and nicer if we all listened to each other’s experiences
You can tell how much those two really care and were hanging on to every word he said. They are always so well spoken and well dressed and I admire them so much.
I don't think the two can be seen as "equals". Some did it because they feared for their lives. Not forgivable, but understandable. Who DID this was a criminal and they got punished for that. They also knew how to convince people to give them Jewish refugees, like giving food or money, things that were running out during war. I don't feel like I should blame people for this, as war is something I wouldn't wish even to my worst enemy and you don't really know how you would go through it until you live it. BUT, I'd rather focus myself on remembering the good people who hid children or entire families, putting their own lives at risk just because being human was illegal.
I kinda agree but you have to think about that those who tried to do something against it were put in jail or even in the concentration camps themselves. I think many people were just scared. But because of this it’s also important to praise those even more who were brave enough to do something against it f.e. the siblings Scholl or Schindler (many more)
@@alyssaleighpestano9966 You have to remember, that those kids may very well have relatives that they should have known and loved (even at their young age) who were murdered by the NAZIs.
I’m sure it was. My great-grandmother’s parents came from Hungary. They were Jewish. They came to America before the holocaust, but she said everyone who was left in her parents’ village was killed. It’s heartbreaking.
5:00 I respect that answer so much. It's so easy to say that you would do it. But when actually placed in those situations it's much harder to actually do the right thing. But I also feel that knowing this in advance makes it easier to empower people to do what they should.
After watching this I wrote to Henry. I asked him to donate an autographed necktie for my grandmother’s quilt. And Henry sent her an autographed necktie. Such an incredible story of survival.

My grandfather is Jewish and lived in Austria during the Holocaust. Both his parents were killed in concentration camps. The only reason he is still alive is because of a social program that transported endangered, Jewish children to Britain. The horrors he lived and the stories he tells. God bless the kind souls who aided the children in need.
As a german I began to hate myself at a very young age. I feel shame when I hear or read about the time1933-1945. I learned that I couldnt change things but we all can help to prevent future generations to have to expireance the same!
Lizard Man well I think for many of us germans it is the same. We feel very connected to this part in history since it is still so close in time. @@pmc614 You must understand, the rest of the world isn't as individualistic as the United States. There is a sense of _national_ identity, and that each person is a representation of the country as a whole. Likewise, each person is also a reflection of their country. So the country's actions, past and present, are the burden- or pride- of each individual. There are individual Germans, but there is also Germany. Not the government, not the land, but the nation itself. Same with Russia, China, India, etc. So, for instance, the Russians feel pride for winning WWII, despite any Russian under ~80 years old never even having taken part. They also feel sadness for the Soviet Union collapsing, pride for Yuri Gagarin, happiness for Tchaikovsky, and so on. Because you are still part of the same nation, the actions of your ancestors are understood to be just as likely done by you. What makes you fundamentally more self-aware or 'holier' than every other generation of your nation before or after you? Nothing. So for a nation at any time to do something horrible is a reflection on all of the generations- or at least the ones following the incident. At the very least, it is a permanent mark on the history of your nation.
I’m 40 years old. I’ve always considered myself a deep person who loves intelligent conversions. And then I watch these children blow my mind with their sincere, intelligent, respectful curiosity.

The 2 Jewish kids I think made this video. They have the deeper basic understanding of the culture and knew the questions to ask because they came from it. Everyone else was asking good questions but the 2 kids had such a true interest in the topic.
The brother and sister here have such a genuine curiosity and respect for Henry's story and their own history. Good for them and good on their parents for instilling in them the importance of who they are and where they came from. But, even more so, for teaching them the value of hearing another's story. I hope they continue to search for such wisdom throughout life.
I love learning about the Holocaust, it’s such an interesting topic and part of history that brings me so much emotion. I love this man so much, he’s so insightful. Our generation will be the last to have Holocaust survivors here, it’s absolutely mind blowing. Back in my middle school we had a man who survived the Holocaust come and talk to our class, many tears were shed. It was such an emotional and eye opening experience. I hope we can continue on to educate further generations about our history and hardships such as the Holocaust.
Wow, the amount of self reflection and humbleness that comes out of him is insane. He even says that he wouldnt know what he would do in the situation. I understand that those kids think they would have hid the families, but in all likely hood they wouldnt have. Most people in our society today dont want to be confrotation with people because of a little conflict, and the vast majority of people would not have done it
Before I had a kid, I probably would have, but afterward, I feel like a horrible person for the way I'd probably have to answer that. It hit me pretty hard. I'm definitely not the idealist I was in my 20s, and it hurts. I think everyone thinks they'd be brave or clever enough to hide a family, but the searches seemed really, really thorough, and to risk your own kids' lives... not so easy to wrestle with. I hope we're never faced with choices like that.
@@Synicizm it is just natural to keep your children safe. I am a mother too and would NEVER risk them. But I guess you need to live sth like that to really know what you would actually do.
Hey, I get that most people wouldn't. Hell, I don't know if push came to shove, I would. But putting it as "today's generation" is absolutely undeserved. This generation has done so much for equality and acceptance and fighting for rights even if that means losing their privilege. Or have you forgotten that the LGBTQIA+ communtity continues to stand up for themselves even as they are killed for it, and a lot of straight allies do the same? That people, regardless of their skin color, have attended BLM protests risking their life in the process? So don't you dare make this a "Oh look Gen Z and Millennials are such weaklings and unempathetic" BS.
I think the man was gently and compassionately trying to make that very point to them.... basically implying “yeah, you think now that you would risk your life, but it’s very possible you would not.”

@@justinstewart3012 that's...not quite true. As a Jew, there are genetic markers specific to being Jewish. Specific to Ashkenazi communities and to other communities as well. Of course, having Jewish ancestry does not necessarily make one Jewish, but it isn't incorrect to claim that they have Jewish ancestry. To be Jewish means to have a connection with your past, which is admittedly difficult if one doesn't know about one's past, but there are ways of determining Jewish heritage through testing.

@Paul Metcalf youre saying that as if every single individual there is of the same ethnicity, pure ignorance. If you werent aware theres countless of mixed people at this point, no matter how big a percentage, so all of your statements are legitimately invalid. Of course you'll find those with predominantly x race or ethnicity, whats the wrong in that? In america, ive met countless of white people as they take up a lot of where i live in PA. I'm not gonna say all of them are racist or do evil things, even when stats show they're embedded with subtle racism against colored people (shown in preferences, death sentence, comfort, police brutality, etc.). I really can't understand how everyone followed this maniac. I definitely would have helped as much as I can. Even risking my life wouldn't stop me to protect other people and humanity.
Don't be ashamed of things you didn't do and had no complicity in. I often hear Americans lament a German lack of national pride, or patriotism. That's the flipside of this realization, and just as much of a good thing to understand. Take pride and shame only in those things you did yourself. Don't live vicariously through others. Then and only then you're a self-actualized individual. That's not to say you can't *like* parts of "your people's" history, or feel good about the art, the culture, the music, the food. But pride is a very different feeling from appreciation, and it's a deadly sin for a good reason.

You must understand, the rest of the world isn't as individualistic as the United States.

Well don't be ashamed. You didn't hurt anybody.

Such a great channel. Just found out about this and I've been binge watching.
I'm so fascinated not only with the guests, but with how the kids are so insightful and curious.

I literally can not express how happy i am that Henry is still hear to talk about what he went through. Lot's of love for Henry
This is so beautiful. It’s amazing how he survived those horrible conditions. God bless him and his family ❤️‼️👏🏽

@@berekettewelde what do you mean by that. Sorry I am 13 I don't know everything
Jeez...who shoots up a bunch of elderly people? Hell, who shoots up people in general? Its so tragic and horrifying. My prayers go out to the families of the victims, I hope with time they can heal.
I live in Pittsburgh. That day I was 5 minutes away from where the shooting happened. Terrified for my life, but God watched over me and the whole time I was there didn’t here a single siren. I got put from an SAT Practice test to hear that a place I was five minutes away from that I drive by almost every day was the place of a mass shooting. Two people that I know really well were also cops there That day.

We need more awareness to our younger generations about these events and others like them. We are seeing signs of this dangerous path once again. Our children need to know the warning signs and know when to defend against them as they get older. Bless this man and these children.
I'm Polish and I'm so happy that I can live in free Poland 🇵🇱
Your anthem is called "Poland is Not Yet Lost" for a reason. Don't waste that freedom. :)
@@theobuniel9643 But polish anthem is called "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego" or "Song of legions". These are only first words.Just saying
Polish too
@Shiernax I would say you are giving up your freedom in Poland right now. For example the rise of the right winged PiS party. And yeah I know we also have such movements in Germany (like the AfD) and we also should do something against these movements not only because they might endanger the freedom and ideas of our society but also because if they gain popularity they can become powerful enough to start or command cruelties like in the past... So to all people who live in Europe take the chance to stabilise and strengthen our democracy and go vote on 26th of may.
Free from who? My grate-grandpa was from Poland, lived there before ww2 started. And now government of Poland shutting down applications for Pole’s Card, because people have wrong nationality... Guess mine

I was glad that kid stood up for himself and said he didn’t really believe in god. Saying that as a kid is pretty damn hard
Fox Trot That's not really the point...
That's all you took from this?? Really? Pathetic....
@@MrsBrit1 just saying, that one comment doesn't represent all that he took from the video. He doesn't have to comment on every single meaning from the video
Somebody's anal about people not recognizing their religion.
Not necessarily. It just depends how the kid is being brought up. I for example would get in trouble by my parents if I said I believed in God.
I’m so glad this program exists! I work with kids this age and hate it when people think negatively about them! Trust me, they are going to do much better with this world and this is a program that further proves my belief!

My grandparents on my dads side were holocaust survivors. This video is very important to me. I remember hearing about it, since the age of 5. I appreciate that people still care about survivors.
Can we just appreciate that this man got time to talk about a subject like this with kids.
Can we just appreciate that he didn't cry at all.
Can we just appreciate how kind this man is.

This guy is amazing he had been through soo much and is soo strong
OMG I lost it at. “I just wanted to see what it was like to have a full stomach”
I have known people who have been hungry from not having money. And I have been hungry. But as a child and not knowing what it is like to have a full stomach is sad. God bless you sir. I’m glad you made it.
I’m polish and I really find this old nice man fascinating telling these stories it was interesting, my grandma survived the Holocaust also hiding and would tell me stories to this day, Poland rly got destroyed but fought back all the time never giving up, proud to be a pole
Pozdrawiam wszystkich.
oh my mother often tells me about Poland. she lived there as a child. she had to experience many terrible things. They were in the camp, she saw dead people on the gallows, forced labor was normal and she was always hungry. her brothers were separated from the family and her mother died in agony in the camp. she was finally able to flee with her brother in 1947. she was 8 years old and her brother 12 years old
I've read about it, respect to the polish and the others who fought
Old people are super precious💓❤️
TrashyHere this whole thing about finding old people precious and cute is so fucking weird.
Winter Soldier Pure heart? are you high?
It's amazing hearing his story, my grand grandma lived through out the war, she lived in Czech (I live in Australia) and I really wanted to visit her to ask here about it all in person but unfortunately she passed away a few months ago. I would have loved to hear her story.
"I can't possibly describe to you what it is to be so, so hungry" 😢
My great grandma was in one of the big death camps Bergen-Belsen. I'm very fortunate that she survived so I could meet her but I never dared to ask her anything because it was so traumatic to her. However I did find out that her husband my great grandpa was the soldier who rescued her.
