    I love those high belts and that smidgen of head voice she used to do some runs. This isn't a song I care for, but I love how she builds it and caresses it and brings it to that astonishing end. She really knew her craft. She was a real musician an, interpreter of music, not just a singer. To me Aretha is in her own category like Michelangelo and Van Gogh.

  • @majorboyce123
    @majorboyce123 2 года назад +21

    This is the sanginist honey ever. She does runs and hits notes in such a deliberately unassuming way. Aretha churches her way through her music so beautifully. When Aretha sings you never know how she's going to land her emotions. Just when I think she does a song wonderfully she goes and gets another reading of it and sets it a blaze. This album called Sweet Passion was just that. Long and forever live Queen.

    This song is evidence that throughout her entire career, Aretha liked to sing pop songs. At the end of her career, she often performed "My Cup Runneth Over" which was a hit song from a 1960's musical. P.S.: Singer Ed Ames, who had a big hit with the song, just passed away at almost 96 years of age. He was performing almost to the very end (just like Aretha).

    Aretha was in great voice, but she had gained a lot of weight in just two years (check out the youtube videos from 1976). Also, just two years after this performance, her voice had changed noticeably to a lower, more husky register. The years of three packs a day smoking had finally taken their toll.

    • @stevenlewis2719
      @stevenlewis2719 5 месяцев назад

      Aretha's father was shot in 1979 and lay in a coma until 1984. She lived in L.A. at the time traveling to Detroit when she could...eventually moving backed to Detroit in the early 80s. It was doing those years that her voice really changed...probably due to a lot of cigarette damage to get through those trying times. Such is life.

    • @piustwelfth

      @@stevenlewis2719 Aretha was chain smoking long before her father was shot. In fact, she started smoking at age 14, and it accelerated in the 1960's. Such a shame because her voice was damaged before age 40.

      @@piustwelfth Aretha had her voice back at 52 years old. She quit smoking around the age of 49. She was able to go anywhere on the scale She Wanted to as She did in Her early years when She was in Her prime voice. Of course it wasn't more mature voice but it was back.

      @@vm7497 I'm sorry, but Aretha never got her voice back. Sadly, the self-inflicted damage was permanent. Her high notes were never the same. Instead they were thin and screechy. I say this as an Aretha fan for more than 50 years. If she had taken better care of her unbelievable gift, she could have extended her career at a high level and likely extended her life. She would have been 82 this year when many seniors are still very much enjoying their golden years.

      @@piustwelfth You're obviously just a hater. Aretha's highs were always thin and sharp but yet with great perfection. Of course because she could really sing anyway she wanted to she could sing lower and strong as well.
      I really only respond to people like you just to give people a chance to read and hear her for themselves and make their own decisions. Because you are wrong. You can tell you are hater by the way you went into talking about she would have been still living if she had a done this or that. You're trying to discredit the Queen of Soul but you can't. Her legacy will live forever.
      Now I will school you.
      This is Aretha in her 40s when her voice was lowered by the chain-smoking. And she still killed it.
