  • Last chapter of "Lord of Chaos" (Book 6 of Wheel of Time) by Robert Jordan. This is probably the best chapter in the entire series. Please enjoy.
    Update - This is read by Michael Kramer, one half of the best reading team for this series. The other half, Kate Reading, absolutely make this series if you are listening to the Audiobooks.

    I agree that this is the highpoint of the series, or rather its longest extended highpoint. I occasionally dig out Lord of Chaos and do just that. For all the holycrap that is the physical struggle, here, and it being early enough that we can still believe that we might lose a beloved secondary character at least, what's really at stake here are minds and souls. Rand's gone from regular mad to PTSD, and he's already had a rocky relationship with Taim throughout this book. It feels almost like the Light won the physical battle at Dumai's Wells, it feels like a crushing defeat spiritually.
    It almost feels like that trauma bled into RJ's writing hereafter, and turned the slog sloggier. No battle until Towers of Midnight comes close to Dumai's Wells in terms of desperation and horror, but the experience of getting there is almost like the narrative itself was traumatized, and tried working it out through random acts of spanking and unnecessary torture.

      Why do people talk about Mat beating Galad and Gawyn with a staff as if that proved they were weaklings, as if the staff weren't the superior weapon?
      _Of course_ Mat won that fight. Hammar even confidently assures him that he'll pay for the bet when Mat wins, and immediately after he finishes with them, he pointedly tells everyone in the training grounds about how the greatest swordsman in history was beaten by a farmer with a staff.
      The wonder is that Mat won in the ragged state he was at the time, but that was just ta'veren magic.

      @@trielt1 He also never really fought them 2 on 1. Iirc, he knocked Galad out of the Duel with a quick blow, then focused on Gawyn and incapacitated him. Then he 1v1'd Galad. Plus they weren't taking him seriously until Gawyn was already out. People saying he beat both Galad and Gawyn at the same time therefore; 'Mat's the best fighter in the series', or 'Galad and Gawyn suck' can't analyze a fight properly. Demandred, Lan or even Rand wold make short work of Mat by the end of the series. Hell, Galad and/or Gawyn could probably beat him. People also tend to forget that a Sword has a much higher skill ceiling than a Staff, and Mat barely showed any improvement throughout the series unlike Galad and Gawyn. I mean, Gawyn went from a cocky fool who got bodied by Mat, and is much less skilled than Hammar since he is taking instruction from him, to killing Hammar in a duel a book later. Comparing Gawyn book 3 to him in book 6 is stupid.

That being said, the chapter in where the three girls finally bond Rand as their Warder always felt really powerful to me. Where the bond kicks in and they can physically feel all the pain that Rand is in. Pain that is so severe and been with him for so long that he almost forgets it is there. The emotional weight so crushing that his emotions were basically a solid stone but veins of gold pulsed through it whenever he looked at any of them and they knew beyond any of the pain and suffering that he truly loved the three of them.

    Forget the healing of Logain, Siuan, and Leanna. Forget Egwene being raised to the Amyrlin Seat by the rebels. The whole sequence from Rand's abduction to the end of the book is as close to a perfect plotline as any story has ever gotten. But Loial and ALL women are just horrible, ridiculously bad. I gotta say, anybody saying that the audiobooks are good just lost a ton of respect in my eyes. • @SRosenberg203
      @SRosenberg203 4 года назад +1

      The way the WoT audiobooks work is that he does them with Kate Reading, who I believe is his wife. She narrates the female POV chapters, and he does the male ones. If you find this particularly awful, then maybe you won't enjoy audiobooks, because the two of them did a great job for the most part, in my opinion. Roy Dotrice did a decent job with the early Game of Thrones books, but by the 4th and the 5th he can't remember which voice he uses for which character and the quality seriously declines. The GoT ancillary stuff is better; Harry Lloyd did a great job narrating the three Dunk and Egg books in a compilation, and I like the guy they have, Simon Vance, who narrated Fire and Blood and will probably be doing the ancillary GoT stuff going forward.
      The quality of audiobooks 100% depends on the quality of the narrator, so listen to samples before you buy anything. There have been lots of book that I loved, but couldn't listen to the audiobook of because the narrator was awful.

    • @Negentropy369

      You are making a snap judgement. When you listen to them for a decent amount of time your perception of the voices changes and it stops bothering you when Michael does female voices, or Kate does male voices.
      I honestly felt the exact same as you when I first tried audiobooks. But I wanted to be able to keep "reading" while at work, or commuting, so I pushed through and got used to it. Then I really realized the magic of audiobooks, which lies in the emotional impact. Something about it being spoken outloud with emotional tonality makes any emotional or powerful scene hit much much harder than when reading. It's like a whole new way to experience a series. I think you are really missing out by not giving audiobooks a better shot.
      Oh, and you lost my respect by making snap judgements about things without giving them a true open minded try, then judging other people out of that close minded ignorance. Good day.
