I have the 36mm homage that Alpha does, I love it to bits. Definitely wish that more company’s gave a 36mm choice. The clasp is crap and wish it had 100 meter water resistance but oh well, it looks a treat.
Beautiful intro! And don't worry, we'll never get tired of watching reviews of £58 watches! Also, the Explorer is by a parsec my favourite Rolex model (except for maybe some vintage models). Non watch enthusiasts (99 % of the people you meet) would never recognize this as an exclusive classic, and if I could/would spend the amount of money on the original, I still wouldn't care about that since I really think this is an awesome and timeless watch design. I do agree about this particular model/homage, a slightly smaller size would be better. Damn good value for the buck here though.
Great video! I bought the Parnis version of this watch with no logo sterile dial on Aliexpress on July 18, 2021 and received it August 10, 2021. The dimensions and build are EXACTLY the same. I believe I have the Miyota movement but it's quiet. The lume is different on mine it's a bright light green hue on all indices including the 3,6 and 9 and it shines! Love this watch I feel your sentiments regarding these value Chinese specials especially having higher end watches. All of them need wrist time and love LOL!!! Cheer mate! Jeff
I literally had this recently. I actually ended up buying the bulova oceanographer snorkel, new 41mm size with orange dial! That, or a Hamilton khaki for £500 and under.
@@darrenfry4695 they aren't, I was hoping to buy swiss for my budget, but just fell for the Bulova! Choices were slim for swiss watches. A few Hamiltons and bland tissots was all I could find!
Good to know that this Phylida is alright. I have their 44mm Planet Ocean homage in the mail because I was seriously considering getting the real thing and selling off all my cheaper watches for a 1 or 2 watch collection, so I wanted to have a look at one on but then, on Black Friday, I decided to postpone that idea and, instead, went ahead and ordered another 4 homage watches from Ali (making 5) plus a Trident C60 Sapphire, from Christopher Ward, because they had a generous 15% discount code that knocked £135 off of the price. So, er... yeah (haha). Is it a hobby, an interest, obsession, or folly, hmmm? Who cares if you're happy. There's only those bad looking Paulareis Planet Ocean style watches on eBay. They print 'ZrO2' and 'Co-Axial Master Chronometer' on the dial and that kind of thing is a huge no-no for me. Seems like Phylida are the only ones doing a P.O. homage with ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal with a half decent automatic movement and bracelet, the right way. (I just went back for a look at the listing and it turns out they're doing a good looking Aqua Terra style one with an NH35, too, for £68, oh no). You sound very like that Damon Allbran out of Blur and Gorillaz, when he talks.
Timefactor is doing a 36mm. Then tisell homage is much better 39mm version with a slimmer bezel so proportion looks exactly the same as the 39mm Roly :)
@Shield Wall yeap but it is actually fine on my 16.5cm wrist (6.5 inches) so it should be fine for most people. Plus I wear it most of the time on leather or Nato, so no issues at all there. Yes the Smith as the history and a different bracelet but more than twice the price and just printed dial whereas the Tisell has very nice applied indexes and great lume.
You said it at the beginning, this watch is a smudge magnet. The reason are too many polished surfaces. These will as well make this watch a scratch magnet. I wonder if some of the Chinese companies think shiny surfaces make their watches look more expensive. Actually the opposite is the case. And the proportions on this one are slightly off. The bezel is too thick and the rehaut is sloping down at an angle making the dial even smaller. The Tisell Explorer is three times the price but it's worth it, less polished surfaces includingthe bracelet, a hi-beat Miyota 90S5 movement with hardly discernible rotor noise, a deep black glossy dial with wonderfully finished inieces & hands, nicer proportions and a signed crown to boot. But a nice review with beautiful scenery at the beginning!
Hi Dan, Again you made it! Ok, for those that read this, i have this watch ( Dan dont tell the caliber, is option for myota 8215 or chinese, both are good), watch is: 1. top heavy 2. thick clasp 3. male endlinks ltl (lug to lug) over 50 mm 4. watch feels builky, heavy wears like 40+ 5. its OK watch On Ali have watch with 36 mm diameter, asslemc (auto, sapphire, solid links and endlinks, mild clasp) for pinch over 60 quid! But no body will make review it for some reason. If you want to know ask me... Dan is Nr.1
Totally agree on the 36mm thing. If this watch was offered in that size, I'd order it today (even though I don't like the clown-ish looking two-tone lume). However: I think I'll try one more time to win the Smiths-/Timefactors-lottery next month when they re-stock. If that endeavour fails again (which it probably will) it's going to have to be the Phylida. Other than that, I also love Steinhart's Explorer-dial Subbie-homage they sell through Gnomon... but that's a dive-watch and I already own four Ocean Ones, so ... :D
I can’t I’m afraid my wife brought it me (along with another 3 watches) for Christmas so it’s wrapped! Killin me not opening it!😂 Did look good on the glance I had of it though. I know Gary at I like watches has brought one too as I told him about the model when I saw it and he ordered one the same time I did so should be a review coming up soon
Everyone should have a Rolex Explorer (hommage) in his or her collection. I have build myself one from Alpha-1933 parts. 36mm rivited bracelets. Like the old days... And thin clasp.. White dial.. I really love it. Although lot's of people think that it's way too small. Who gives a.... 😂
I’m with you on the sterile dial. With some of these I want the branding gone, but that usually messes up the symmetry of the dial. You’re making a good run at providing some validity to this brand, though!
I agree with other subscribers. A comparison video with the Benyar Explorer homage is a channel must. (Then a Holiday giveaway because we have all been good little subscribers this year.) 🎅🏻
I thought the same about myself and then I bought a Tissel Explorer. HOLY HELL it’s a boring watch. Flat dial. Lifeless. Boring. Simple to a fault. I was not impressed.
Great start!!! Love that professional cinematography!!! I have to disagree with you on this. For me...I need to state that...for me...That watch is beautiful. AS IS!!! I think the 36mm is way too small. I rock a 50mm Seiko PADI tuna regularly. I find, the 39mm Heimdallr pilot a bit small...almost teeny...LOL. I always enjoy your content...Wish Phyllis would go thru a name change...LOL
Smudge free! Lol, thats my nickname would you believe :) Stuuniing watch and great video once again. Im modding a Vostok into an Explorer homage very soon so it was interesting to see this one
Is it my imagination or are Bliger, Phylida, Parnis and others making this same watch with just a different name on the dial? I bought a Bliger with a Myiota movement last year and like it on a heavy leather strap. $70 running fast a few seconds a day and is hard to beat for price/value and understated good looks IMHO.
You are correct however I believe that none of those brands make anything. They are all sourcing the watch from one supplier and having their own branded dials and crowns inserted.
I see it as a failure. Since the homage is obvious, they should have just stick to the design, keep it thin, make that bezel smaller, brush the bracelet, etc.
It's a spot on nice watch. The quality is definitely there. When buying a Rolex, are we just buying a name or quality? IMO, a name is a name, is a name. Rolex charges more for their name, not quality. This IS a brilliant watch. The only improvement I'd request is definitely 36mm.
This watch has ruined my watch collecting hobby! I now don't wear any other watch, they are all gathering cobwebs. It probably means now that when the shops open again I will have to go to the big scary watch shop and ask nicely to be put on the waiting list (or whatever rolex call it these days). Oh yeah and another thing it was loosing about 2 seconds a day over a week and now seems to be gradually getting them back!
REX 1 is my perfect Grail watch, although I like many of the Rolex models the EX is the only one I'd love to own....I'd sell the wife's spare kidney for one....36mm would be better but 39 is fine....it's a shame that this is all polished....brushed or even bead blasted would really set this off....⌚🏴⌚🏴
