This is actually a game I have a lot of nostalgia for, it was the first Game Boy game I've ever played, on 3DS Virtual Console. I spent so much time playing it and even unlocked Ball.
The original music in the Game & Watch Gallery games are ridiculously catchy, and I am still hoping we get an HD installment in the series so that the music can be given a new spin with richer instrumentation.
Ah yes, the one game that, over the course of my formative years, got me into retro gaming, Game & Watch collecting, chiptunes, and pixel art. On top of that, the simple fun of these games inspired me to want to get into programming so I could make my own games. My mom had no idea all this would happen when she rented this game for me from Blockbuster one day. She chose this one because it had Mario on the box.
When I was 7 or 8 years old my mom surprised me one day by coming home with a Gameboy Color, Pokémon Silver, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and Game & Watch Gallery 2 that she'd picked up on a whim at a local garage sale. It was probably the greatest day of my life up to that point. Although I played Pokémon Silver the most, I still spent countless hours with G&W. Hearing the songs again sends me straight to the backseat of the family car as a kid. My favourite game was Helmet, though I ended up with a fondness for all of them due to having to reach 1000 on each!!
When you burn food in the Chef remake don't feed it to Yoshi, keep bouncing it a few more times and it evaporates. If you feed Yoshi too many burnt items he'll run away and you cannot get anything eaten anymore.
With the power and resolution of the Switch, Nintendo could make very accurate emulations of all the Game & Watches, even the multi screen ones! Unfortunately I guess there isn’t enough of a demand for that
When we both got our GameBoy Colors, I skipped this game but my friend didn't, and I remember thinking "what the appeal"? Thanks for shedding some light on why someone would buy a collection of Game & Watch games in 1998.
Having played and enjoyed Game & Watch Gallery 1, this and Tetris DX were of course the games I asked my parents for alongside the Game Boy Color itself. And oh boy, did I enjoy this game a lot! The unlockable game was definitely the coolest surprise.
I only ever played Gallery 4... I didn't realize it contained remakes of Modern games from earlier ones! Seeing Modern Chef in 8-bit is actually really cute.
Eeeee, I grew up with the 4th one and it easily is what got me into the hi-score chasing addictions I have for older games now. This is absolutely a series Nintendo should bring back as there's so much GW stuff they never touched on. :(
If Nintendo released a compilation of every Game & Watch game on the Switch, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. There's really no way to play those old Game & Watch games anymore except for compilations like these.
After all these years, I had no idea that you could transfer the four games from the original Game and Watch Gallery to the second one to play them in color! That's really neat.

It boggles the mind that Nintendo never made the definitive Game & Watch Gallery on DS or 3DS. The problem posed by Oil Panic and Donkey Kong’s double screen was solved! And there would’ve been memory space for the entire G&W line (barring of course the licenced ones like Snoopy and Popeye). Sure there was that Club Nintendo game, but that wasn’t up to the level of these games. Still, I guess the G&W Mario Bros. would’ve still been an issue. Ah well, no sense getting angry about it now. Still, if they did do another G&W Gallery with all the modern modes and bonuses and whatnot, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
@@rezterralico4369 the Crystal Screen series had see-through screens, so the liquid-crystal sprites would just be floating in this clear rectangle. Yeah, Australia got an addition Game & Watch collection released as the first Gameboy Gallery, which was also released in Japan as a stand-alone. The only thing setting it apart from the Game & Watch Gallery series was the lack of a modern mode.
@@TVsMrNeil The original Game Boy Gallery was released in Europe and Australia exclusively, and didn't even come out in Japan. Australia kept the name for the Game & Watch Gallery titles, while Europe changed it to match the US.

Speaking as an Australian, we did have Game Boy Gallery 2 - it was released elsewhere in the world as Game & Watch Gallery, whereas in Australia it was released as a direct sequel to Game Boy Gallery, which was (I believe) only released in Europe and Australia in 1995. It was much the same concept: Ball, Flagman, Vermin, Cement Factory and Manhole were all remade for Game Boy but lacked the Mario characters or the modern/classic modes (they all played like the classics but had updated graphics). So we kept the name and counted that one as number 1, whereas the rest of the world switched names and started the numbers again.
How many exclusive Nintendo releases did Australia receive, anyway? I have to imagine you could count them on one hand. Nintendo barely even cared about Europe as a territory, let alone Australia.
@@JeremyParish Not a great deal. Beam Software made an AFL game and the original International Cricket for NES, but I don't think there were too many others. The Master System trounced the NES over here but when Nintendo of Australia set up during the SNES's life they got a bit more aggressive. The most notable Australian-oriented title was Super International Cricket, which was a very big seller and even offered as a pack-in title. We got quite a few cool pack-ins, actually: SIC, Nigel Mansell's World Championship, DKC + All Stars, Mario Kart, DKC2, Killer Instinct, Yoshi's Island and a Super Game Boy + Game Boy Gallery pack. The Mega Drive (as we knew it) still heavily outsold the SNES here but they did at least put up a much better and more locally-oriented fight in the 16-bit era, trying a lot of different combinations to shift the hardware.

I was born in '81. I somehow missed Game and Watch until the very end. I don't even remember which unit it was, but it really impressed me. And just about as soon as I had heard about it, it was gone. Fun Club magazine became Nintendo Power. There was a Nintendo Cereal System just coming out. Mike Tysons Punch Out was the next big thing. And this new handheld called the Gameboy was just around the corner. I was so impressed that Nintendo was always innovating, never stopping long enough for something to get stale. Never saw a Game and Watch system for a few decades after, and I never would have guessed that it went nearly a whole decade before being phased out by the likes of Gameboy.
I don’t understand why people think LCD retro gaming is an embarrassment it’s all we had in the late 80s and early 90s I loved them I even continued to buy them after I got my game boy in 1992 it was the novelty and easy of use they were just convenient for kids at the time we all loved them even the Konami tmnt units were fantastic back in the early 90s
I played the hell out of this one and 3, because the games reward you so much for keeping at them for as long as possible. TOSE really did a fantastic job here; Nintendo I hope paid them very well for this one.
5:21 can you explain how to add the Gallery 1 games to Gallery 2? I only found an option to link the two to add the titles from the first game's Gallery to the second game's Museum.
Sadly, I don't think they were ever released in the US so resale prices are likely to be high, but Nintendo did also release two Game And Watch compilations on the DS that were only available through Club Nintendo.
I gave this to bigbro for a birthday but we have no idea where it is, unless he threw it away with his GBC after it stank after being in a moldy cellar for a while...
I think I used to have a used copy of this title back in the day. I just recently got all the stars in the first title on the 3DS LEGIT no save scumming.
Having Peach be the cook is weird AF, NGL. She's royalty. I'd have had Toad cook, and make Peach a second diner along with Yoshi. Yoshi gets everything he can get his greedy mits on, but Peach would need to eat off a plate and she'd be worth more points :D
Super Mario All-Stars is also a good comparison because like in that game, I disagree with their vision of how the graphics and sound should be upgraded.
4:43 "doesn't look so great on GameBoy" you can play a couple of Game&Watch simulations in your browser here bdrgames.nl/lcdgames/ it's pretty close to the real thing
Apparently by being an idiot who misunderstands what you're allowed to carry over between games. Several write-ups made it sound like you can unlock previous games, but I'm told you can only bring over museum write-ups.
I don't remember the exact button combos you need to begin the upload of museum panels from one game to another, but just please note that if you do attempt this, don't transfer from G&WG1 without having unlocked Star Mode difficulty in each of G&WG1's games first. Otherwise, it will erase your all your progress in G&WG1! I learned this the hard way. Must be a weird limitation of G&WG1's save data format.
Nah, I was just ribbing you. Nintendo is definitely not always great at dealing with Peach, but then you open up the whole can of worms that is different cultural expectations and social roles....
@@JeremyParish I think nintendo should make Peach an heroine like in 3D world and Nintendo should create another plot for the Super Mario series like save the world or something like it.
A little, but then she has been shown to enjoy cooking in other games. But I think that may have STARTED with this, so it could be either really. If it was Princess Daisy, it would be sexist.
Back when I first got a gameboy color, this was the only game I had. And you better believe I played the crap out of it for an entire year.

The games from the first game cannot be unlocked with a link cable. Only the Gallery information can be added.
I based this information on multiple reliable online sources that indicate otherwise-unfortunately it's not something I can realistically test myself.
@@JeremyParish Because you don't have the skills to pay the bills? (More like time to unclock all the stars)
I love the Game & Watch games :)
Did not know you could import the original GW Gallery games. That’s a nice tidbit.
Game and watch gallery 4 was the first game I ever played
Sadly, I don't think they were ever released in the US so resale prices are likely to be high, but Nintendo did also release two Game And Watch compilations on the DS that were only available through Club Nintendo.
they both got released through the US club nintendo at the time. i have the first but not the second (got the ball repro instead)
I gave this to bigbro for a birthday but we have no idea where it is, unless he threw it away with his GBC after it stank after being in a moldy cellar for a while...
Game & Watch Works would be really cool.
The music in these games is almost overwhelming.
Like... too good? Too loud?
@@JeremyParish I can't decide if it's just too loud or it's just that the music itself is such a wall of sound that it's drowning you out.
I think I used to have a used copy of this title back in the day. I just recently got all the stars in the first title on the 3DS LEGIT no save scumming.
Great channel
oh boy. my very first videogame...
Having Peach be the cook is weird AF, NGL. She's royalty.
I'd have had Toad cook, and make Peach a second diner along with Yoshi. Yoshi gets everything he can get his greedy mits on, but Peach would need to eat off a plate and she'd be worth more points :D
At first i thought you started a new series about game a watch
this was like the 2nd video game i ever played. woah.
I know you probably get this comment 1000 times every video, but that 8-bit Evangelion next episode theme warms my heart every single time
Super Mario All-Stars is also a good comparison because like in that game, I disagree with their vision of how the graphics and sound should be upgraded.
4:43 "doesn't look so great on GameBoy" you can play a couple of Game&Watch simulations in your browser here bdrgames.nl/lcdgames/ it's pretty close to the real thing
at 3:30 "here we have 5 *slight pause* 6..." what's going on here? a tiny editing mistake or am i going bananas?
Can you do a map soon
How do you transfer G&W1 to G&W2, then to G&W3?!
Apparently by being an idiot who misunderstands what you're allowed to carry over between games. Several write-ups made it sound like you can unlock previous games, but I'm told you can only bring over museum write-ups.
@@JeremyParish Gotcha! So, in other terms, the video misinformed?!
Yes, sometimes I make mistakes.
Jeremy Parish Great video regardless!
Isn't that Wario, not Mario in modern Helmet?
Both. This is covered in the video. Mario is the default character, but Wario becomes available after you lose and play again.

You guys don´t find a little sexist that Peach is on Chef?
She's allowed to enjoy cooking just as much as any of the men are.
@@JeremyParishI know, is my commentary sexist then? That´s a very interesting topic.
