- William Wyler presenting an Honorary Oscar® to Gary Cooper for his many memorable screen performances and the international recognition he, as an individual, has gained for the motion picture industry. Accepted by James Stewart and hosted by Bob Hope, at the 33rd Academy Awards® in 1961.
I never saw Jimmy Stewart so choked up before... that was genuine emotion.
"Gary Cooper" and "Jimmy Stewart", the gold standards that all other Hollywood owe a great debt of gratitude.
Definitely, lagaman11. They were true gentlemen and gentle men. They, along with Cary Grant, are my all-time favourites.
Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart and of course JAMES CAGNEY
And then to a lesser extent but still utter Titans John Wayne and Errol Flynn (can't speak the same about their personal lives but hey)
Absolute legends were everywhere then.
You are missing John Wayne
@@segundoruizgomez1936 No, no I'm not.
Jhon Wayne
Fine speech from the great Jimmy Stewart for the great Gary Cooper. I miss these actors... Fonda, Cagney, Astaire, Gable, Bogart, Wayne, Tracy, Peck, Lancaster, Flynn, Douglas, Grant, Mitchum, Robinson, Laughton, Olivier, Guinness. Maybe the finest generation of movie actors ever. Every real movie fan admires the work of these men. Nearly all of them are gone for a long time now, but we had DVDs and Blu-rays to watch their movies till the end of our lives.
J V wonderfully put
Yes true acting.Was an art.
Douglas is still around.
I miss them too x
Jhon Wayne
Such a beautiful, heartfelt speech from Jimmy Stewart, and such a wonderful appreciation from William Wyler. Hollywood at its classiest.
A golden age indeed.
Gary Cooper died of cancer about a month later. Jimmy Stewart was such a genuine guy. You could see the tears in his eyes at the thought of his friend being so sick in hospital he couldn't come to the show.
Actually Coop was not in the hospital that evening, he was watching this at home with Rocky and his daughter, Maria. He also died at home.
FOUR legends: Bob Hope, as well.
While I would watch a movie by either of these two men, I have always preferred Jimmy Stewart's work because of his personal story of heroism as a pilot. It is described in depth in a book called "Mission."
James Stewart never talked about his activities which led come to the rank of Brigadier General. You can see this in his interviews on the Johnny Carson show.
When Jimmy Stewart finally settled down with Gloria, his wife, he took on her two sons, one of them died in action in Vietnam. He had an additional set of twin girls with Gloria.
Jimmy Stewart flew B-52 missions without any fanfare during Vietnam because he believed they should be done without any notoriety.
Gloria predeceased him and at some point in his life he told his cardiologist that he no longer wanted batteries in his pacemaker. That's how Jimmy Stewart went.
Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope, Billy Wilder, stars of my mothers generation. Stars who shaped American entertainment in the decade I was born. Giants all.
William Wyler
A well deserved honor to a great actor whose screen presence still captivates us many years after his passing.
It was a pretty well kept secret that Coop was dying of cancer and it wasn't until Stewart's emotional acceptance of this award that it became known in the papers the next days. 3 legends: Wyler, Stewart, and the great Gary Cooper.
It wasn't known to the public but everybody in the industry knew Cooper was on his deathbed when Jimmy Stewart accepted this for him. He died less than a month later.
@Clark Gable Not tobacco, he died of metastatic prostate cancer.
@@3155DOGMAN He died of metastatic prostate cancer, but it probably didn't help that he, like most other actors of that era, drank and smoked constantly. Sadly, I think that was one of the reasons why all of those actors from that era aged very quickly after their late 30s or early 40s.
@@avocate2017 Agree.
@@3155DOGMAN But Coop, like many in those days, was a smoker, which can be linked to developing any type cancer, even prostate.
When stars were really stars. ❤️
Jimmy was a class act and a great American. They don't make them like that any longer.
Among his close friends were Fred MacMurray, Joel McCrea, Ernest Hemingway, the late Clark Gable and of course, James Stewart.
Jhon Wayne
And of course John Wayne
Cooper was actually sick during the time and couldn’t accept his award. Jimmy, who was a friend, got so choked up during his speech that people could tell something was wrong. Cooper eventually died not long after. Very touching moment
I just watched the movie Sargent York for the first time. If anyone should want to learn about what an amazing actor Gary Cooper was, please see this film. It truly shows how natural he was and how his few words could speak volumes in this film. Today is Memorial Day, 2021. It was truly meaningful on this Holiday. You might shed a few tears as I did.
"Sgt. York" starring G. Cooper -- what a Treasure...and a perfect tribute to our veterans - many of whom were, are our forefathers, grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, nephews and sons -- even the ladies in our families in past were in the medical corps or state-side admin pos'ns -- my mother being one of them. Today they take on even higher ranks + responsibilities in our military. TY to ALL our vets!!!
And TY Coop for sharing your gift + life! We will never forget you 💞🎬💞
In Remembrance to you all...💞🇺🇲💞
To Gary Cooper, thanks for all your work.RIP
Gary Cooper was one of the greatest cut down at 60 years its a dam shame life is not fair.
Gary Cooper and James Stewart were very close friends ive read Gary Coopers biography and the two of them were the least spoilt actors in Hollywood. Both were very laid back and didnt want the Hollywood fluff
Jhon Wayne
@@guapo2772 John Wayne was an asshole.
Gary Cooper. Bob Hope. Ben Hur. William Wyler. The best day of our lives. National Recognitions. Rare Talents. Clappings. Award accepted by James Stewart, Gary best close friend. .......
The best movie actor ever... No one can equal him....
Two of the Best Actors ever and one of the Best Movies
I was in High School and remember watching this with my mother..When we heard James Stewart Acceptance Speech for Gary Cooper, we both said, oh no he's dying..Up to then, no one knew..He and all those wonderful Stars back then were for the most part, private and had dignity.
Unlike today's 'Pretenders' who have to Constantly reinvent themselves with outrageous and vile behavior to stay Relevant!m
How did u knew he was dying? Nobody knew he was sick before this Oscar?
It was a pretty well-kept secret from the public until that evening. After that broadcast, the Pope, JFK, etc. sent telegrams to Mr. Cooper.
One of the greatest of all time.
the great Jimmy Stewart got choked up knowing that Coop was ill. Coop passed away in '61, too, after Jimmy received the award on his behalf.
Coop is one of my favourite actors.
When Hollywood had some integrity and the men were men.
Gary Cooper ❤
Wonderful superb greatest actor Gary Cooper legend
Cooper was dying. A great tribute to a fine actor and person.
An American dream come true. There are brave men and women who believe in the future.
That was the hardest thing to do and Mr. Stewart did it with well. Gary Cooper was one of a kind. We were blessed to have him with us if only for a brief time.
"He had humility". Today's Hollywood celebrities: "What does that word mean?"
Today's hollywood celebrities have no clue: they are missing the two things that Cooper and Stewart both had: Humility AND talent.
Around a month later "Coop" was dead. God rest his soul.
Rest in Peace every one.

When the Oscars and Hollywood Stars were classy and decent....unlike today!
What do you mean? Are you saying Old Hollywood wasn't full of nasty people too? Being "Classy" doesn't mean anything. It's all Showbiz.
What a stupid comment! These are the same people that betrayed their friends by blacklisting them. They were cowards.
They were taking drugs and fucking each other like bunnies....classy? Really?
@@Jude74 You can't tar them all with such a broad brush. Cooper certainly doesn't fit your description. Although he was a political conservative, and was somewhat sympathetic to the HUAC, appearing as a witness, he refused to name any names. And he defended blacklisted writer Carl Foreman, who later said that Cooper had been the only major star in Hollywood to try and help him.
But yes, I think the Oscars and Hollywood stars were a bit classier then. Certainly there was scandal and scandalous behavior going on, and to a great extent Hollywood was just better at concealing it back then. But on the other hand, the Oscars weren't politicized like they are now, and there was genuine diversity of opinion in Hollywood, unlike now. There were liberals like Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Melvyn Douglas, Humprey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, et al.; and you had conservatives like Cooper himself, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, John Wayne, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, James Cagney, Bing Crosby, Joan Crawford, et al. And many of these actors and actresses maintained good, close, personal friendships despite their political disagreements. Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda are a good example -- the two were lifelong close friends, despite being polar opposites in their political views. Contrast that with today, when the entertainment industry has become utterly dominated by the left, and only conservatives who have already made it big dare reveal themselves as conservatives.
@@Hibernicus1968 sad but true...! Hollywood has become an echo chamber for the left.. thank you for your incisive comment.
I saw that movie. Actors back then ( I am telling my age) were awesome. I still love these old movies. Penny Serenade snd Love Affair and Gone With the Wind are my favorites. Thank you for the classics that still live on.
R.I.P. Gary Cooper (1901-1961)
The lead for High Noon was offered to 5-6 different leading men before it was offered to Gary Cooper. Funny how things work out sometimes.
How come there are no more Gary Coopers, Jimmy Stewarts or William Wylers in Hollywood anymore?
Because the entire society has changed for the worse. You can't find these people because they grew up differently, they thought differently, they knew their crafts, and they had character. They were unique. And . . . And . . . the roles were soooo much better. Today they're like cookie cutter actors in mediocre films. Nothing much. Certainly nothing memorable.
Hollywood lost its excellence and standards years ago.
it's really weird - i'm "just" 52 Years old, but the Actor's I love the most were all born between 1905 and 1935. To me the great Hollywood era ended with the likes of Steve McQueen, James Dean, David Janssen (if only for his Dr.Kimble appearance) - Nevertheless i should take this to my doc one day.. >.OD
There is no more actors like those. The strong silent type.
Because they were special
It's not true that Cooper was a man of few words. He could handle long passages of dialog very well. Just watch his testimony on the stand toward the end of "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town"; his explanation for not wanting to take up arms and then changing his mind in "Sargent York"; his 'luckiest man' speech at Yankee stadium in "Pride of the Yankees"; his courtroom speech in "The Fountainhead". There was a lot more to Coop than 'yup' and 'nope'.
James Stewart était un grand ami de Gary. James avec du chagrin de perdre un ami. Lors des funérailles de Gary, James avait fait partie des personnes qui ont porté le cercueil
i love gary cooper cool silent man

GREAT GARY COOPER ¡¡¡....the best
In his book Made In Hollywood, journalist and part time actor James Bacon tells that he was outside Cooper's home with other news reporters when the actor"s death was imminent. He says Gary's dogs suddenly started to howl and Bacon took note of the precise minute in which that happened. About 30 minutes later a spokesman from the family announced that Cooper had died and when Bacon asked the demise time it coincided exactly with the moment the dogs howled, which reminded him of an Irish belief or superstition concerning the dogs knowing when their master's soul has abandoned his body. The following day he mentioned the dog's incident in his column and afterwards he received a call from an association of parapsychologists that found the coincidence to be a very interesting subject, worth of further studying.

Don't forget Cary Grant...
Ross Schmidt You forgot the two who did the most to break barriers and embody the star: Cary Grant and James Cagney
Dizzy Blu YES!
Well you have to read a script to know the material for the movie. I thought that's how acting went.
Deserved
...emotional.
Although it was a honourary Oscar it was Gary Cooper's second. His first was in 1952 when he won Best Actor for "High Noon".Then good friend John Wayne accepted the Oscar on his behalf.
Actually, his first Oscar was for Sergeant York in 1941. Another fantastic movie.
No, it was Cooper's 3rd Oscar: the 1st Sargeant York, 2nd High Noon

This was the honorary Oscar that Cooper won in 1961 for his career achievements.

When the awards were worth watching. Don't watch anymore. Not since 1980. No loss either.
Another wonderful Easter Egg!! Can you post William Wyler's Honorary award from 1966?

Did these 'honorary Oscars" morph into the "Lifetime Achievement Award" at some definite point? Generally the recipient is someone often nominated but never a winner.
I think this is wrong. Cooper won 2 Oscars. One for Sergeant York and 1 for High Noon. No honorary Oscars for Cooper.
Jimmy was so sad.😢
