- There is nothing wrong with loving trendy items. But endlessly chasing the newest trends can be tiring and quite wasteful. And now, with the microtrends, I can't even keep up anyway.
Here are some ways I escaped the trap of social media trends and try my best to be intentional while still being active on social media :) I hope you guys enjoy the video!

I deleted my social media in 2017. I watch YT but it’s curated to my interests.
I don’t miss social media one bit. Life is peaceful and less noisy. Not being bombarded by strangers telling me how to live is amazing.
Live your life for yourself and your immediate community. Social media is fake and shallow. And I agree, everyone is turning into a sheep walking down the zombie road.
same! agree with all of this. deleted my social medias in 2020 (minus YT), and don't miss them at all. and i totally agree, YT can be great if curated carefully!
❤ I deleted my Insta last year - I go there once a month just to check if someone has contacted me. I feel like it’s moving at a pace that doesn’t represent me, and somehow it made people not better, but meanier.
❤️❤️❤️
I 100% noticed this as well! What a shame, for our uniqueness is what makes us beautiful 😍
Hi Sophie! I can’t thank you enough for the thoughtful wisdom you share here. Honestly, your videos are such a safe and happy place for me. You’re the one person I always come back to when I’m struggling, stressed, or just need a reminder that I’m allowed to be myself. ❤
There are people in my industry whose entire jobs, and now careers, are devoted to making your journey to purchase seamless, frictionless and fast as possible. It's also a very well paid job with incentives to keep getting better and better at it. With tools designed to track every action taken across all platforms and aggregate that data to inform minute decisions such as "will the user be more likely to buy if the button is green or red?" "Should the button have round edges or squared?". That's not even taking into account ads, email, billboards, influencers etcetc. When i stop and think about it, it really freaks me out.
Loved the video Sophie and the line which would stay with me would create your own unique style ❤ thanks again for voicing these 😊
This is important massage, Sophie! I catch myself in similar thoughts, thank you for sharing!
When every single influencer on planet is selling one or other thing. Constantly telling us the necessity to buy something to achieve something, you are the only ONE who's putting effort to stop this madness! Thank you for existing
❤️❤️❤️
Exactly my thoughts. Thank you for your incredible effort. ❤
She’s doing great job but she’s not the only one. RUclips is full of alternative lifestyles and anti consumerism
„You can‘t buy a lifestyle“ is probably the most important lesson I am taking from this video.
Nailalouis, And did you ever try to buy a lifestyle yourself before?
I made a screenshot of that. Very valuable 🎉❤
true
Taking a social media break showed me how most of my unhappiness resulted from comparing my life to other people's lives, the way my body looked to the bodies of beauty influencers. But when I started to look around in the real world, I realized that most people are not extremely model-like beautiful. They live an ordinary life, and are not constantly travelling the world. That gave me such a peace of mind and I'm now happier than ever and really fine with not knowing what is trending on social media.
When the same aesthetic is trending and a coffee shop in Los Angeles looks the exact same like the one in Amsterdam or Tokyo. People start to crave authenticity more and more.
I don't know if it'll ever get to that point, people seem to like the same aesthetic and are drawn to it online and offline.
Your message reminded me of the current videos from Joshua Becker where he covers 7 habits to overcome consumerism. So far he talked about 5 habits, 2 more in his upcoming video
1/ Recognising the benefits of owning less
2/ Find the culprits
3/ Eliminate the triggers
4/ Consider the full cost (not just the price tags, but time, space & mental energy)
5/ Gratitude & generosity
❤️👏
Sophie, you are so at the point with the replica competition nowadays. I call this copy-paste mass culture. There is no creation, just a copy - paste - forward actions. Tik Tok book recommendations, no thanks, I am an old fashion reader. What about listening to the quiet whisper of the books in the store!? Finding the right book for the right moment needs practice just like the intuition and the mindfulness.
I am my own unique person. I don't care what some random person on social media says the latest trend is. I buy needs, not wants. I don't want to be like everyone else. When did people just lose their identities and stop thinking for themselves???
Social media is basically just advertising. If you participate, you’re either going to be the advertiser or you are going to be the consumer.
Another thing that I did that helped me not get swayed by the trends is by decluttering my email box. The spam emails really get to me, and makes me want to purchase the new and exciting things. The constant distractions make me buy things mindlessly, and I have noticed that by decluttering, I can really focus on what I like, and what I love.
Great tip ❤
After I would purchase something from my wishlist I would immediately unsubscribe from the company that I had purchased the item from. It didn't make sense to stay connected if I had already purchased what I wanted/needed.
🌱 I did the same thing last year , took an hour to “Unsubscribe” to so many emails …. I asked myself “ do I purchase from this company out of need or wants after viewing from seeing from some video?” !!! I have been buying SO much less ❤ #Intentional
Fully agree! For the last two years I've started a tradition of unsubscribing to all marketing emails at the beginning of each year. I may have signed up to a few throughout the year when waiting for an item to come on sale or have been automatically enrolled when I've purchased something so it's really nice to start each year with a clean slate and to know that I'm only receiving information that is currently interesting to me.
I agree so much! The mental clutter of all that spam, promotions, etc. is actually quite overwhelming! I’m slowly moving over to leaving my old email address for just that sort of thing and having a new one for the important things. 😊
This has been my favourite video for a long-time! So many are repetitive and it's hard to find something new and refreshing. Loved this, so thoughtful and true, thank you ❤
I cannot agree with this content more. The microtrends really do drag us down. Now I make conscious decision to buy each item, rather than following a trend that I may not even like. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, as always!
wow sister is so supportive :)
oops, commented using my other channel
@@KoalaTravelSolohi 💋🤎
You got that right. I don't care for trends. I buy what I like, love, and wha charmes me.. ❤
Love that! ❤️
Amen to so many of the comments. Sophie your whole persona demonstrates your beautiful uniqueness! Your channel should be watched just to see how to be oneself.
Awwww ❤️
Agree in all you say, we felt very overwhelmed with the society in generally thats why we moved to a land in the middle of nature with our 4 kids and we go to town somethimes but we choose and we dont miss anything really and we live very simple with less stress and less stuff😊
Sticking to a low buy where I only spent money on things that were only necessities was how I shifted from not wanting trends anymore. I finally realized that the things I need will eventually present itself in time by just living my life and paying attention to intrusive organic thoughts of things that could enhance my life instead of being influenced. It allowed me to stop my impulsiveness all together and I’ve changed my mind on a lot of things. Now I’ve shifted my attention to art again which I haven’t explored in years and has given me way more joy than scrolling ever did. For me, I realized my wish list needed to be an item list on my phone where I saw all the things I wanted. Making a wish list in the app itself wasn’t helping. Putting it all in one place helped me rank which item I truly wanted vs another. Thank you for inspiring me on my journey to minimalism. Your content has helped me so much ❤
❤️❤️❤️
Your videos give me so much peace and joy! The only social media I have now is RUclips. But I’m deleting it off my phone now! But I have an alarm on my calendar for YOUR videos so I can check in on my laptop. Literally my favorite RUclipsr.
Aw thank you so much. ❤️ it means a lot
Not buying stuff is becoming more and more appealing.
The worst are the haul videos. OMG, I always wonder, where on earth do they store all the "stuff" they buy weekly. It astounds me at how much junk people buy.
I am happy with what i have and not what i do not have🙂, i appreciate the little things in life.
I’ve never had a Instagram or TikTok account and I don’t plan on creating either. If I don’t see the trends I’m less likely to be tempted to fall for them 🙏🏽😇
Love this video Sophie, so much truth in your words. I couldn´t agree more with you! I have never followed any trends in my life because I always imagined those who do that some kind oh sheeps....exactly all the same! Not me luckly. Yes it´s tempting to buy the trendiest stuff, but really in the end it what reflects who you really are, trends like you said are temporary. And honestly being 45yo, I have seen many trends along the years and they never stayed for too long. So in the end my motto is : just be you, your beautiful unique you! Lots of love from the Netherlands xx
This video really spoke to me, I have been having the same thoughts about social media and how everyone has become a cookie cutter of each other and everyone looks the same, which is terrifying. I am determined to not get caught up in this and keep my own sense of identify with my home and style. Thank you for your beautiful and inspiring content xxx
What drove me nuts is when so many influencers were pushing Temu. Bleh!!
I love this.
😍❤️ thank you!
Finally!😌 had the same feeling since another generation has started something new. And finally, my thoughts are valid. I don't have to always follow trends. It's kind'a suffocating, too. Let's just be authentic, based on personality and what's just inside our pockets😅.
Yesss can we please just be content 😆
Indeed Miss!😊
i agree with you. social media is so overwhelming. i hate it in personal life but i do think youtube is a good platform to share my views and life experiences with our audience.
Same and I love Pinterest
So true. Some time ago I noticed that a lot of women friends of mine are wearing the same kind of jewelry bracelets. I really liked it and thought it would go with everything as it’s sort of neutral. I got it and it really is just as I thought it would be… except that I know many other people own exactly the same 😅
But this video made me realize it only now. Also, I can list some of the trends I choose NOT to follow.
1. I don’t really like the movies that are being produced these days. I think they are superficial, predictable, lacking charisma and individuality, overstimulating. I don’t know, maybe I’m looking in the wrong places 😅 Which is why I would rather watch an old movie, or low budget one.
2. Almost all women I know do their nails. I choose to wear my nails without gel/polish and only do hygienic manicure because a) I don’t want to spend a few extra hours on my nails b) I don’t want to spend extra money c) I accept the natural look of my nails.
3. I don’t buy expensive accessories. To me, it’s not so important and I don’t want to be evaluated by the price of the things I own.
The point where you said that now a days, everyone is trying to be a replica of the current trend! It just hits you hard when you pay attention! This is a beautiful video ❤❤
I became minimalist when I became a mum to a 2-year-old son. Gosh, it was exhausting to put away toys every day. Since then I realized I don't want so much stuff, the less the better for me and my mental health.
1. Dont buy a lifestyle ( work with what you have and you will find out what you need. )
2. Buy something you really enjoy and need not what you get recommended ( dont go shopiing without a list )
3. Find out what your taste REALLY is, not what they have chosen for you find it piece by piece. Find pieces of yourself again.
4. Carefully handpick peaces wich reflect your taste, not the trending stuffs.
I love how honest this is, Sophie. I've been watching your content for the last two years and almost fell into replicating some of the very-personal choices shown in your videos as the one-and-only-true-way of minimalism. How ironic... Replication is so easy to fall into.
Important and very true message. Thank you for being a UNIQUE creator and shedding light to returning and valuing the basics❤
Thank you so much ❤️ appreciate you

Be yourself, an original is always worth more than a copy.
Yess 🫶 love that quote
This is what I want to preach for my friendsss!!! Gosh! Louder, Sophie for the people at the back! 📣
It's the damned phones. If we spent more time offline, self actualising or at least knowing ourselves, we might have a decent original personality. But we're too much online, being sheep.
Whenever I have the urge to purchase something advertised to me, I watch one of your videos or some other minimalist/frugal youtube channel and that always sets me straight!!! Thank you!
I love this topic. It seems everyone is just copying each other these days, and I just want to see what everyone is actually like not who they think they need to be to get likes.
Yes!! 🙌✨️
I’ve seen so much more lately than when I grew up. I am only 34. I don’t understand the obsession with Stanley’s or Taylor swift or even target and Starbucks. I don’t get it. I’ve never been trendy though.
Love this. I’ve been a social media strategist for over ten years and have adopted elements of minimalism into my life, probably for around six or seven. Over that time, my values have moved further and further away from what I do every day for work, to the point where I am now looking to gradually transition my company away from social media and towards other areas. It’s easier said than done when this is my main source of income. Social media has absolutely changed over this period though, and I find it less and less a place where I wish to spend time. I use it very sparingly in my personal life and find a lot of value in exploring oddball places to buy or consume. Less time on social media means that I’m genuinely surprised when I find something I’ll like and use, rather than just buying something immediately to fix a need. Thanks for this video, it starts to discuss something that’s very much at the forefront my my mind right now.
I hope you don’t go with what they are chosing for you… So sad and true! 🙏🏼❤️
Love your videos! 😊
I follow you for quite awhile now and i really managed to go more or less minimal and now i am starting my low waste journey but not for 100% that is impossible for me. You’ve helped me realise how wasteful we are in this modern world. I managed to save so much money and everything I’ve buyed in the last two years i can tell a story to. That wouldn’t be possible if i would mindlessly buy. Thank you for this ❤️
Preach ! Everything is an ad these days, your message is refreshing.
Also love the cinematography of the video
I made a list last year of all the things that I love. And then I went down the list and made a note of all of those things that were free or cost very little, and that was 80% of the list. So...do we really need to buy or pay for things that we don't really need. People do it because it gives them a lift, but it soon wears off. 🌻🌷
sophie i love listening to you speak. you have a divine and healing voice and your personality shines in each and every video that you let us in your world with. thank you for being a light and i hope beauty and success surrounds you
Be the sunshine you seek in your life.
Yess 🌞
I feel like tik tok is especially unhinged with this. Seems like everybody on there has to have an aestetic. Cottage core, Barbie core, coastal grandma…can we just be ourselves? It’s annoying lol.
Thank you. Absolutely agree. I like old school and vintage. New generation running too fast
Yes! I can't keep up. Nor do I want to 😆
I hate the trend culture. Ive kind of always had my own style and its getting harder and harder to find what i like as every store is just the same old carbon copy of the one before.
You are such a special voice on YT. Thank you for being genuine.
Thank you so much for being so authentic and unique and pointing out some aspects of social media that is hindering our ingenuity and uniqueness.
Thank you 🙏 for creating a channel that is solely focussed on minimalism and slow living, contents that I barely find on the internet and thank you for curating them in such a calming way.
I really deeply appreciate your contents and the wave of impact you’re creating through your craft.
THANK YOU 🙏
I definitely got "influenced" by these trends whether in real life or in social media but I'm glad I'm being more aware now not to easily get influenced by what I see.
resonated with so much here. i used to have a problem where every time i went out i had to come home with soemthing - or I felt physically ill. reflecting on a lot of the same things you are. love from a fellow creator!
❤️❤️❤️
You spoke about asking yourself if the purchase is in alignment with your values and vision. When I work with someone in career transition, I am asking them almost the identical question but regarding the company or position they are considering. Always love your videos, Sophie
First omg i luv ur content so much, it inspires me to live my life intentionally! Thank you for your content and just for you wonderful person!
So happy to hear that. Thank you for supporting ❤️
I feel these things too. I don't know who I am anymore because of work, kids, husband and stores/ media. I know what I like in my home but, have a hard time finding it. Also, having to move every year isn't helping. I get things the way I want it and then must move. So frustrating! Anyway, trying to find myself literally! 😢
Is it only me who do not have online shopping apps? 😂
"Who can be the better replica " this sentence got me thinking it's so deep and so true Thankyou for making amazing RUclips Videos Thankyou Thankyou Thankyouu
😍❤️🙏
I recently went to a unique boutique that really showed off the owners rare taste , I was so mesmerized by the interior decor and how it was set up it .
Sophie, I am so happy I went across your videos. You are my true inspiration. You are real, intelligent, beautiful and most importantly unique. Thank you
I can relate to this. The last couple of months were hard for me, and I felt like I was in the trap of social media trends. All because I just wanted to start being active on social media. There are so many trends and I feel like those trends limit my creativity. Trendy sounds, trendy reels effects etc. And it seems like there is a push that either you are a blogger or you are nobody on social media. What if I want to create smth l like without an urge to sell my services or products? I am still figuring it out. But I think social media can bring an identity crisis to people.
The big paradigm is that they are not given the right name... They call them "needs" when they are wants. We have to understand very well when we need it or when we don't need it. There is a very good strategy which is to let 7 days go by...the brain will give you that signal to know if it is a whim or a real need. Thanks for the video. I explained something similar in a video on my channel.
I send you a hug,
Hi 👋 I really enjoy watching your channel because it's slow and peaceful. It's less stimulated. ❤
I create artist lifestyle vlogs (Irene Torok Art) with thrifting ect thrown in and always believe in buying only what you like or need, not a trend item as such. Got to stay true to self ❤️
Ahhh I love your videos. I always find myself feeling so calm and inspired listening to your messages :) Thanks for sharing! I'm already hanging out for your next one :)
So authentic #sophie #BE
I knew years ago that I had to be discerning with buying things. My hair is natural, and around that time more products were available. That meant more exposure for hair content on social media. Everything doesn’t work for everyone. It’s not making sense to see the same circulation of products when there’s thousands more on the market.
Insightful & much needed advice for everyone. The world seems to be drowning in trying to keep up with a pre imposed style & way of life that is inauthentic & changes at a very accelerated pace to “feed the machine.” You’re a breath of fresh air 🌞
So happy you can see my point 😁 thanks for watching
"*God Bless Everyone Take Care All Long Lives 100 years and above all*"
What I like about your videos is they are different. Thank you for being "not-trendy" 😊
This was so well said!!! I loved it. It really does become easier over time.
😍❤️ yes! It really changes the mindset
I love your videos, values and ways of life! They are so helpful & help me slow down, be more joyful, enjoy my life I have made for myself and be happy with what I have. I have been enjoying your videos for years & wish they were longer! Thank you!
Thank you so much!! Means a lot 🥹
Halfway the video... I so so agree with you... Thanks for this video.
Love it! Mahalo from Kona. :) I love watching decorating videos but ultimately, our home totally reflects our personalities because I do exactly what you just suggested. Being in Hawaii it's so much easier not to fall victim to the trends of the mainland. Love your videos!
I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. As a teenager so many of my peers specifically girls are always trying to be the same. Having social media. Wearing the same types of clothing. Buying the same thing like uggs or the new stanley cup. I know it's a big world and it's impossible to be 'different' but why does everyone have to purposefully act the same. All of them wanting to be that girl. It's just annoying.
You made so many amazing points; my favorite was "you can't buy a lifestyle". There's so much weight to that, I think it could be a video in itself! Thank you for giving us the reminder to assess our values and make intentional purchases 💛
"Who can be the best replica of the latest trend". Yes! Just yes! The social pressure associated with that. I would add, as a mid-thirty woman, the pressure to stay relevant and "young"
Being a twin I have never had the desire to be like everyone else. I have always taken interest in the things that resonated with me. It never mattered if other people were interested in the same things or not. I have been the same with my wardrobe. I like burnt orange and different shades of both blue and grey and have found ways to incorporate these colors into what I wear. By being my authentic self I have always been happy and satisfied with my life.
Love it!!! ❤️
Finding unique gems at antique stores or flea markets are a great way to make your space unique! My husband and I have decided to have our home reflect us! We don’t want a cookie-cutter look or ascetic that seems to be trending. It’s fun and we have many stories to tell of how we found each piece! 😊
The wishlist idea is a game changer. I have tried it and it has helped me a lot. It gives me time to really think about whether what I want to buy is something I truly want or if it’s just something I’m excited about in the moment. It’s a great tip, Sophie!
Yes! Glad it works for you too!!
in all seriousness... girl where is your crotchet knit bag from??? i need ONE staple for daily use (not being material i genuienly need a bag aha)
The wish list works for me too, for material and non-material items. I have a wish list of things I want in my home or closet and they usually things I need as I write down this list without outside influence and review it from time to time. This helps that when am tempted to buy that thing that catches my eye in real life or on social media, I always check if it is one of the items on my wish list and if it is not then it’s an impulse purchase and I don’t need it. Not all the items on my wish list are needs, some are wants but my wish list is carefully curated. I also live with the mindset that getting one thing means forfeiting another. One of the items on my wish list this year is to do more travel and experiences and knowing I have plans to do a trip curbs my impulsive spending as I know I have to save for the trip or that new sofa that I need and want. I spend but it’s planned spending and helps me managed my funds and not be easily swagged by influencers or other people’s wants or lives. It keeps me authentic to myself.
Hey Sophie! I’m just curious about your updated skincare routine. I know you keep things simple and I love that. It’s so overwhelming seeing all these different products, it makes my head spin. I’d love to see your take on minimalistic products for this
The problem is that people don’t have a strong sense of self. So, they look up to these losers on social media. I am grateful that I have a strong sense of self. I don’t look up to ordinary people. I look to strong people ever since I was a little girl. The Royals, politicians etc, their sense of style, intelligence and elegance. Thank goodness I don’t follow trends, I am just myself.
Malama naba dingtangjokde
Love it
when i saw your content actually also make me became a minimalism and wiseful person. thank you
In terms of minimalism, I did that minimalism trend to declutter a lot of things, then I ended up adding more. However, I might have a little more I have found out that essentialism was much better which is just keeping what I need and maybe a little more
That's why I love second-hand bookshops, you can always find something unusual on there instead of the same trending best-sellers over and over again.
"*True *-Internal & External*-**Soul Auto Shine*"
I see your point, to start with a minimalism is not about replacing your stuff with the new ones that look "minimalistisch" in colour, size etc. I would do that to, to motivate me, but luckily I don't have spare money to do so, so I need to keep my stuff and work with them, and this is what is minimalism all about, create with what you have, starting now if you wish and not the day you will have a new minimalistisch wardrobe and so on. But a question on you or all the minimalists out there who posess same colour furniture, WR capsules, because all the minimalists i have seen on yt, they all have these soft colour palette stuff, earth colours clothing... You including, no offence, but you had to replace your stuff as well right? Or have you always had these colours at home, clothing...? So you decided for minimalistic lifestlye and let's say as a motivation, you went to buy stuff that go with this style hand in hand?
I can only speak for myself, but I find that going neutral makes it easier to decorate, and often, it's the cheaper option
5:26 not you coming for the target valentines day section 😭 peak commercialism
Becoz people is lazy and coward toward another people''s feeling.
Just went to RUclips Premium to escape the ads . Nice to see this video without interruptions .
