Napoleonic Fife and Drum Tunes

  • At the END of a day's worth of practice we decided to record ourselves. Please bear in mind that we are both novices, i have been playing the fife for 6 months (2months with my new fife) and the drummer has 2 months experience.
    We both have no teachers so we rely on ourselves for the most part.
    This is the 4th time we played together and half of the songs shown here we had played together for the first time that day.
    Anyway, hopefully it'll be somewhat enjoyable ;)
    Leeve de Koning en het 7de!

    Good job, guys. To all the negative Nellies commenting here, the drum would typically sound like that back in those days. I don't think this particular drum even has snare strands installed. Yeah sure, he might be able to tighten the ropes a bit, but who cares really? THIS is how they sounded a couple hundred years ago.

    • @hartleymartin
      @hartleymartin 6 лет назад +30

      Whatever criticism people might level at them, the fact is that most drummers and fifers during the Napoleonic wars would have sounded very much like this. Few of them were skilled musicians, most could probably not read sheet music and had to learn it by rote from another musician. It is *Field Music* after all, and not a band.

    • @jakubsabosz2933
      @jakubsabosz2933 6 лет назад +5

      There are drums from 18th century with snares installed in museums. It's just that not every drum had these. And they were made of twisted gut, not metal strings like today. So they had to sound a bit different.

    Me daughter just got a Fife for her birthday today, she's surprisingly good at the first and last tunes. I don't think she's ever heard either before, but I'm a fan of traditional and martial music... A year of flute probably helped with that.
