  • For me the best sapphire is the Sri Lankan one.
Many sapphires are produced from Thailand, Myanmar, Madagascar, etc., but I feel the overwhelming appeal of Sri Lanka.
In 1975, during my trip around the world, I stopped by Sri Lanka and spent three months traveling around the island.
One day, I heard from a fellow Japanese traveler that Ratnapura was famous as the "Town of Jewels" and I visited Ratnapura just for fun and curiosity.
Then, I met an Australian gem cutter who had stayed at the same cheap hotel for a long time, and we spent every day looking at the nearby gem market which was traded on the street.
This was the first opportunity to have a relationship with this country (called Ceylon at the time) through jewelry.
After that, I visited Ceylon eight times until 1980 in search of gemstones, spending about two years there.
At that time, I saw hundreds of sapphires every day, but most of them were too light in color, or dark in color but dull in brilliance.
Among the many sapphires, there are one or two unique ones like this sapphire that can only be found in Ceylon that have a deep, solid color and are never dark too much, bright blue shines from the bottom.
Even if it is the same Ceylon product or the same untreated one, it is really rare to have such a shine.
I once heard from a Ceylonian who studied gemology in Japan that "Ceylon sapphires are harder than Thai and Myanmar sapphires, even though they have the same hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale."
I can't check if it's really harder or not.
The intensity of the brilliance which is somewhat reminiscent of a diamond
makes me think "I wonder if it'll shine more if it's cut diamond cut? "
A characteristic of this sapphire is that it appears blue under sunlight, but appears purplish under artificial light.
This feature is also found in tanzanite, but it is clearly different when compared to tanzanite.
The brilliance of this sapphire is as hard as a diamond, but tanzanite (6.5 on the Mohs scale) looks soft.
Furthermore, regarding the color of sapphire, purple with a hint of gray lacks vividness and saturation and is not beautiful.
However, sapphire like this one that is bright and slightly purple is not underestimated at all.
Europeans and Americans especially tend to prefer this type of color.
THis Israeli liked this sapphire very much and preferred it over the beautiful blue Ceylon sapphire.
He is a jeweler who deals in colored diamonds, and he said that he would definitely like to sell such a beautiful sapphire.
Japanese people don't seem to have a tendency to say which color they prefer.
This ring is handcrafted to match the sapphire.
The inside of the ring is also carefully sanded, so it is smooth and comfortable to wear.
The diamonds that surround the center stone give it a unique and luxurious feel.
The Bangkok cut melee diamond further enhances the beauty of this sapphire.
The average is 0.07 carat per piece.
The color is D to E, the clarity is VS1 to VS2, and the cut is very good.
    They shine very beautifully.
