Well Hello AJ, watched your video and it's almost midnight here. After all these years, you never cease to amazing me. Really enjoy these fireside stories. It's almost like sitting on the floor listening to Grandpa tell stories. I have a great suggestion for storytime; Hastur the King in Yellow! The book is broken up into short stories, he only appears in 3 of stories. Nothing like H. P. Lovecraft horror, tentacles and all! Thanks AJ you have a wonderful day!
I love these short stories. They remind me a lot of the Elder Scrolls books that add more complexity and nuance to a fantasy setting. There's so much high-flung, cosmic-level stuff that adventures do that sometimes it's nice to come back to smaller stories.
Wow! Aj, as if all your work isn't amazing enough, you can have a solid future as a narrator of audiobooks either part or full time! Thank you for this 😊
“There are words bards use to describe dragons there are phrases they call upon time after time they tell of wide reaches of leathery rings arch and clawed they tell of a head the size of a horse a neck muscled and scaled thicker around than the largest tree in the forest they tell of the stinking flames that issue from the maw of such a beast They have not seen a dragon Had they, had they once come within sighting distance of a dragon they would not tell of these things they would tell instead in words which started in fear of the soul chilling terror of the beast they will tell the stone to which their limbs turned while their hearts and minds scream for flight how every purpose good and ill fled their hearts blotted out by the immense shadow of a beast that should have lived only in legends” What a terrifying way to describe a dragon that I will read aloud the next time I need to
This is amazing! I was so enthralled by the story and the characters where amazing. Honestly I could easily compare it to the quality of a forgotten realms novel
Youre a fantastic storyteller! One video of yours that sticks with me is the story from your own game of a black dragon wyrmling manipulating your players to the towns ruin. It would definitely take a lot of work, but id certainly love to hear a longer form story from your own campaigns in this style!
Yes more of this! If you never do another lore video I'd be ok with that if you did more of this. I love the lore videos BTW. Just saying I think we'd all love more of these stories.
@@AJPickett Thank the heavens and even a few layers of the abyss! Love the lore! Don’t get me wrong this story fell perfectly in-line since I just finished reading elminister and was craving more wizard stuff haha Keep on doing great things! Love the channel
It is a series, there are well over 200 short fiction articles found in the pages of Dragon magazine, I will not be reading them all for you, but there are plenty to come, rest assured.
There was an eighth son of an eighth son. He was, quite naturally, a wizard. And there it should have ended. However he had seven sons. And then he had an eighth son... a wizard squared... a source of magic... a Sourcerer.
Great story to listen to while I worked today. Also, one of the best descriptions I've ever heard of what it's like to experience the affects of a Dragon's Fear Aura. There are no words really, just emotions and terror. I also loved how the spell lessened the effects of the fear, but didn't eliminate it. Sometimes you don't make your saving throws man.
Really enjoyed this video a lot, please make more of this style. Love listening to your longer videos in general when I go grocery shopping or whatever.
It's sort of funny that this story gives me the same vibes as David & Leigh Eddings book Belgarath the Sorcerer, even though it was published 1995, almost decade later.
Finishing the story, it has interesting implications for the discovery of wizardry - that what we would call a Sorcerer class in 5e took something they had intuitively and could teach their intuition to those without a bloodline. It implies that the Wizard class is relatively new!
Yea I have Homebrewed this interaction. Warlocks were the origin of magic by material races. Followed by sorcerers who were born from warlocks not always but some with a weaker but more general connection to magic. Warlocks that established organizations over time became clerics and paladins. Descendants from them became rangers and monks able to harness their own souls to interact with the weave. Druids slowly evolved from warlocks and sorcerers that connected to nature establishing domains which they drew power from and in exchange protected and serve as bridge to the fey. And finally wizards the aberrants of the material races and most monitored for they are born able to control the weave yet not connected to it, a most dangerous situation when left unattended.
@@i.LoveNox It's definitely a very outsider-focused origin story! I like to put a little more mystery to it - like some say the Weave is the "cage" that the gods of the current world order made to control/stabilize reality. So some say it's the structure given by outsiders by which mortals control magic, while others say it restricts mortals only to magic that outsiders want them to have access to. For instance - why do only the lackeys of the gods get access to positive energy?
If i had any pointers. I'd say only in the beginning u seemed to pause b4 sentences like your reading be for you speak. It happens a few times later (don't get me wrong this is great) but the feeling of "hes just reading the lines" happens for awhile
I hope AJ realises that they've got an extensive following and could just start reading slash fiction to us in the middle of a one of these videos and we'd probably be totally fine with it so long as they told us what constitution penalty a post-coital werewolf is subject to.
AJ you are indeed a conjurer because you animate the words you use and transport the hearer.
Perfect, relaxing story to cap a stressful night of applying to grad school. Raising a glass of rye in your name, cheers! 🥃🍻
*clink* cheers, and good luck.
Oh man I'm gonna be there next year, wishing you good luck Jim!

A joy to listen to. Well written and read. A welcome winding down to end a long night’s work.

AJ, your channel and your voice is the most amazing thing, you single-handedly put my son to sleep with this video. You hath soothed the mandrake
I’m a 34 year old man and I sometimes go to bed listening to this channel with ear buds in. I understand your “mandrake”.
