The rule as I've seen him do it is that level 3 helmet at any damage level is better than a clean level 2, because it will protect against Kar one-shot. For vests he'll take a clean vest over a higher level vest with 1/3rd remaining because it doesn't get destroyed as quickly, and he's in a lot of gunfights. If you suck at the game like I do and avoid a fair fight whenever possible, stick with the higher level vest.

You can change it in the settings for each class of guns. It applies right after you pick it up. If you picked "auto" in the settings, the gun is set to auto right away.
There are bugs buzzing real loud. That is made against campers. If someone can handle it, then they would handle anything. Dying to a camper is frustrating. Still... it's you that bad because you are not checking the corners. :D
