But Conan can't talk about that upfront or some listeners will come in disliking her. Plus he can't do it for every guest. And yet he has to address the fact that Sona & Gourley aren't there. I thought this was such an elegant solution to smoothing over this. Conan takes the damage on himself and even turns it into extra laughs. And it's in service of making the podcast as good as possible. The guest is comfortable and her book gets to fully shine, and so she'll be entertaining and come back in the future. Incredibly professional!

The dynamic at this table was so great. I loved the moment @7:09 when, like a game at a Bridge table, Sona and Matt are reacting together and Conan is giving Adam the look of someone who left him absolutely hanging on good cards.

I love Sona and Matt but I think Conan was justified in leaving them behind on this interview. When guests come to the studio, it's expected that the entire crew will be there, and it's a loss when either Sona or Matt are not present. That being said, Conan has been doing this a long time and he often did interviews on other talk shows without bringing Andy Richter along. Everyone Conan brought was a behind the scenes crew member.
This was most definitely a Sona issue. Conan, understandably, didn't want her there given her propensity to cheapen delicate scenarios with her Sona-Ness that people love so much. But it was also definitely a BTS decision from Conan to leave Matt behind to make sure that Sona didn't feel too awkward. Conan has always gone out of his way to be polite all of his life, especially when it comes to a staff turned dear friend who isn't really on the same wavelength as himself at best of times. Not having Matt there was an actual loss whose sensibilities were always more similar to Conan's just like us fans of improv. It was the best Michelle Obama interview so far and it had a lot to do with Sona not being there disrupting Conan's flow (which isn't cute to me anymore, it was fine the first year and a half of the podcast, loved her in remotes back in the days of the TV show). Wish Matt was there!

I was there! It was great seeing Conan's rare baby and family photos. I tried looking for Bley afterwards so that I can meet Conan afterwards but sadly he eluded me :( And honestly it was more of an intimate conversation. Idk if it would have worked with alllll of them there.
That's exactly why he didn't bring them along. He was respectful of Mrs. Obama and her time. It was an intelligent conversation between 2 extremely bright people.
I think that interview would have been great with Sona and Matt too. I think Michelle would have been cool with them being there. Even if there was some riffs here and there she seems cool and would love to be joking with you guys. That being said, there were several episodes where you did more serious interview with Sona and Matt being there and they were quiet and didn't disturb the flow of the interview so I think it would have gone great either way.
Conan walked into this knowing he wasnt going to win the argument, so he decided to squeeze as much comedy out of it as possible. I think that sums up the entirety of conans career.

Even if there was some riffs here and there she seems cool and would love to be joking with you guys.
That being said, there were several episodes where you did more serious interview with Sona and Matt being there and they were quiet and didn't disturb the flow of the interview so I think it would have gone great either way.
Conan walked into this knowing he wasnt going to win the argument, so he decided to squeeze as much comedy out of it as possible. I think that sums up the entirety of conans career.
