I think the people of the 1930s weren't ready for this, but their grandchildren are gonna love it!

+The12stringwizard No chip involved. It's more like an analog synth

Depends. It has a hell of a lot to do with 80s wavetable synthesizers. Even the problems with volume control are shared.

this is the grandfather of wavetable synthesis, a lot of this is just single cycle waveform tones being looped.. and wavetables have been used since early 80s in consoles n computers

What was the most interesting about the Variophone and graphical sound was how many well-known composers worked with it, both Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff are known to have composed pieces for it. Rachmaninoff worked with the system's inventor, Nikolai Voinov, if memory serves.

0:46 Sounds like it could be dramatic music for Sonic the Hedgehog.

The way how it sounds, it must've been 30+ years ahead of its time. I'm talking even before the prototypes of music synthesizers were being made and used.
0:50 The top row resemble a bunch of 1970's United Artists Records logos.

Yet another example of Soviet superior technology together with the Tesla coil and Smirnoff Ice. The year after they'd invented the Game Boy, the Berlin wall would've been toppled to the other side.
