you should have given him a free demo on the application of a shillelagh therfore allowing him to adjust his reasoning as to the true value of blackthorn lol
Throwing that cap at you would buy him a fist across the ears here. I used to live in Shannonbridge, Offaly, and we had tourists like that too. My missus used to run the tourist office and she had a nice little piece of bog-oak under the counter to put some manners on that kind of gurriers. My compliments for not beating them senseless with one or more shillelaghs, as most Kerrymen would have done under the circumstances, you are a gentleman and a scholar. Keep up the good work.
The customer is a professional scammer. They are usually two people involved. One plays the weak part. The other is a psuedo bull. Their aim is to shame you into their objective. I've had this experience in the seafood industry. Good you stood your ground..
You are 100% in the right! As a fellow craftsman, I have experienced similar. Too many rude people and people with no upbringing! Off you go, if you can do better, do it! Glad that was the Au Revoir involved!
Yaa, I'm a stick maker too and people can be awe struck by your work and very cruel and arrogant as well. I mark it up as jealousy actually. So hang in there and keep up your craft. You do do excellent work.
I've been using one of your canes for 2 years now and it has been worth every single penny (more even) as it allows me to get around on a daily basis with the knowledge that I have a beautifully crafted cane that will remain in my family for generations to come. Anyone claiming your work is worthless needs very much to get their head checked. From me at least you have eternal gratitude 🙏🏽
Good on you Francis! That’s some incredibly rude and disrespectful customers. Sounds like you handled it in a professional manner. I’d give my right arm to visit your shop!
There is no excuse for rude behavior and you did the right thing. You might want to include a phrase that I use in similar situations: “please observe the mistletoe hanging from my back pocket.” You also should have included his business website so we can avoid it. Thanks for sharing.
I make sticks as well Francis .To me its just a passtime .My sticks are nothing special, but they do take up a bit of time.I mostly give them away to people who like walking or a charity etc. They`re not blackthorn though. Not much of that around here where I live.
I don't know what was going on in this mans head. I live in France and I know of stick makers charging a lot more than ten euros for their work. Of course, one can just cut down any old branch, but it's hardly the same thing. If he knew anything, he would at least understand how difficult it is to find long straight seasoned branches of blackthorn at least.
I make sticks as well and I know the work that goes in creating them. And I have bled cutting blackthorn too and all I can say is Francis, you were too kind! The least he could have done is be polite but I guess that's just too much for some people.... By the way, today I watched five of your videos in a row. Great work brother!
There's always gonna be a few nuts out there, doesn't matter where you are! I really enjoy your videos and appreciate all the work that you do to make those sticks, you should be proud of (and get paid for) your work!
Oh merd pardon my french lol he’s fubar you don’t is a shillelagh maker that’s a big no no I know how much trouble to get them sticks As I done it myself was great to chat with your dad on live stream too you know me as John all best 🍀🇬🇧🇮🇹🐾🦊
I have one of your sticks, and I thought the price very reasonable for a craftsman-made item in a hard to work material. I suspect all craftspeople experience the “I could do that myself” nonsense. My wife usually just says “but you didn’t, though, did you?
@@FrancisMcCaffrey5 I’m sorry I missed last fridays live stream Francis, I have my notifications all set up but it never reminds me. Otherwise I’d be joining you all. I think you should talk us through your french cultural experience this Friday! I’m looking forward to it already!👍
Mr. Francis , you poor man !!! The Frenchie was a fraudster running his mouth & is probably a maker of nothing but trouble !!! I am in agreement with some of the others , the bloke was in bad need of an attitude adjustment with either a shillelagh up side the head or a knuckle sandwich !!! But you sir are too much of a gentleman to do either , to your credit !!!
Francis who needs a customer like that ! and all be it he says he’s a craftsman knife maker that’s B..l S..t .... in my opinion your sticks are worth every penny a lot of hard work goes into it, forget about him he ain’t worth it. He can go and cut his own. Good that you shared this video.
He said he'd just cut two sticks that were worth far more, and yet he was in your shop looking for a stick. Why would he be in the market for a stick if he already had two? Also, a green stick isn't of much value til it is seasoned and doesn't split out and become a bust. I don't think he'd cut any sticks nor was he in the market for one. He was out for sport to see if he could 'get one over' on you.
It indeed appears to me that stickmaking tends to be an under-appreciated craft outside of stickmaking circles. If you compare it to knifemaking, I assume most people will think they can make something very similar themselves in a few minutes (and indeed, when it comes to just very superficial inspection, a hazel rod cut in two minutes may seem similar or "functionally identical" to a stick made out of a totally different wood seasoned for three years, straightened and varnished), while most people have never tried making a blade. Therefore, even a crappily made knife may sell for 100 € or more, while asking about 100 € for a well-made stick is considered absurd by many people, without ever considering how many hours of work went into it. Well, what can you do - not every product is for everybody.

I'm impressed with your inner calm! An Irish Zen Buddhist!

Maybe the guy doesn't understand what goes into making blackthorn sticks but he didn't have to be rude. You were right to make him leave.

People like him always act like they didn’t mean anything by what they did once they’re called out.

Good for you, love your sticks, someday I will buy one, I hope: USA

That man obviously doesn’t know a single thing about sticks Francis. How awful and ignorant to treat you that way.
The way he flung the flat cap at me was when I hit my limit

Good on you Francis, if that's a bargaining tactic, it's a poor one.
Day in the life of a stick maker !!
Oh Francis you are a better man than I. Tell frenchy to come to Chicago and try that. He’s liable go home looking like Swiss cheese.
