Thanks for sharing your perspective from the city I was born as American visiting Barranquilla. Because most Americans have a distorted perception of Colombia 🇨🇴. You’re educating and opening people’s mind
Thank you, I’m glad you think so! Barranquilla is a cool city, very laid back in comparison to other big colombian cities. and yes people have a bad perception of Colombia, but that being said, many tourists need to smarten up - especially in Medellin.
I'm from Barranquilla and now I live in Arizona, it's good seeing my city. Haven't been there in about 6 years or so. Great video, thanks for sharing ❤✌
Thank you, and you’re welcome. Arizona is nice too and has far less humidity haha
I'm from Barranquilla, I miss my city. I'm currently living in Bogota. Barranquilla is
Considered as the Colombian Caribean capital city.
Barranquilla > Bogota 😉👍🏼
How do like living in Bogota
Well, I don't like living in Bogota so much. I have lived here Bogota since a new employer hired me.
@@TonyTone1Although I don't particularly enjoy living in Bogota, I am forced to do so because this is the city where the work office is located. Thus, I had to relocate here. By the way, I'm not saying that Bogota is a bad city; rather, I'm saying that it's not the same as Barranquilla, my birthplace.
My cityyyyy!!!!!! Always welcome!
Woooooo 🙌🏼🙌🏼 Thank you
It seems like a chill place to go spend the winter there.
Absolutely- it’s what I did! It’s HOT.
Welcome to my city, born in El Barrio Abajo, came to the US and can't wait to come back and retire En La Puerta Del Sol !!!! Enjoy my friend and thank you for showcasing my City !!!
Gracias!! Me gusta mucho a tu ciudad 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
How long have you been living in USA and where Puerta del Sol
Great video, I'm glad you are enjoying our beautiful country Colombia 🇨🇴 greetings from USA 🇺🇸 ❤✌️
Thank you! It really is a beautiful country!
Thanks ✌️
My dad’s side of the family is from Barranquilla, so I’ve spent a lot of time there throughout my life. It’s a fun and beautiful city.
That’s awesome, I bet you have great memories in Barranquilla. It is a beautiful city
This is where I spend my summers when I’m off my teaching job!!
That’s amazing, it’s hot as heck in the summers so you must love the heat! Haha I do too, but many don’t tolerate it well
@@jonathanells too hot for me. I have friends there but I choose to stay in a hotel where there is air conditioning. I’ve been to other parts even San Andres islands and I look forward to it every time!
Hopefully you can show us more travel vlogs, cities, healthy recipes and more!
Next video introduce yourself - we want to know! Best regards from West Palm Beach!
Have my Barranquilla Pt. 2 video coming soon- and there is an intro of me in it 👍🏼 Thanks for following. Will be doing 2 vlogs in another country soon too. Stay tuned
Your going to love Rio brazil huge fitness culture and nice gyms
It’s a place hopefully I’ll get to go to!!
Santorini island, in Greece, was the main inspiration for the architecture of La Aldea Doradal. This Colombian village is part of the township of Doradal, in the municipality of Puerto Triunfo, Antioquia. ‘Colombia’s Santorini’ is located 4 hours away from Bogota, Colombia and three hours from Medellín. It was built in 1980. Pablo Escobar, the famous drug lord, owned at least one house in the village. There are even rumors of Escobar sending an architect scout to Santorini to pick up on some local Greek elements to replicate in Doradal. Doradal is mostly known for Pablo Escobar's luxurious estate, Hacienda Napoles which is located 1 kilometer away from Santorini. The estate included a Spanish colonial house, a sculpture park, and a complete zoo that included many kinds of animals from different continents such as antelope, elephants, exotic birds, giraffes, hippopotamuses, ostriches, and ponies. The ranch also boasted a large collection of old and luxury cars and bikes, a private airport, a bullring, and even a kart-racing track. 40 years ago Colombia's Santorini was in full bloom. Large parties and concerts were held in the square. Most of the cabins were summer homes for families from Medellín and Bogotá. Later, the region was hit by drug trafficking and was abandoned for many years. It wasn’t until 2005 that things started to get back on track, with people moving back to La Aldea and rejuvenating the village.
Very very interesting history! You’ll find lots of areas of Colombia seem like they copied them from Spain, or Italy or parts of Europe. Or definite inspiration lol
Enjoy this gem, while it's still a secret hahahaha
Haha it’s hardly a “secret” anymore, but you are right, I like the fact there are fewer tourists than Medellin and Cartagena. I actually have to speak Spanish here
let's say you are looking a good spot to move around Cartagena and Santa Marta in the caribbean coast of colombia...well you should come to barranquilla.
I agree with that!
Thank you for visiting my city. Don’t forget to go to Santa Marta.
Just wait for my next Vlog series part 7 😉😉👍🏼
Keep at it! Will be in Quilla as well
Thanks man. That's great. Have you been before?
@@jonathanells I've been there, but it will be the first time for me to really live there
Nice!! Same, I’ve been here twice before but this is my first time living. I’m in a relationship now and will be spending much more time here. But it’s a great place
@@jonathanells felicidades! Lets hang once I am there! We also have the 'healthy lifestyle' in common. You are in Riomar, cierto?
How about the floods? Ive heard it can be really bad?
In the southern part of Barranquilla and Soledad it definitely can get bad. In the Northern city it’s not horrible, but definitely worse than anyone would be used to in most cities in North America. You shouldn’t be worried about flooding, and if you are, I’d recommend going when it’s drier - November to April
Great info Jonathan very informative 👍 I heard about a Canadian tourist fighting a border agent at Bogota airport about 2 months ago, could that be the incident you're referring to?
Yes, that’s what I’m referring to, crazy eh?
@@jonathanells yes very nuts. In the surveillance footage you can see him try and grab the agents gun. It took a crowd of bystanders to subdue him
2.400.000COP = 600 USD aprox.
240,000 my friend. Maybe I said it wrong. Not 2.4 million.
@@jonathanells You said US 850 in colombian pesos would be around 3. 4 millions
cool video Jon, i havent been to Barranquilla. closest thing to it was Cartagena which seemed a very touristy. is there any fun activities there?
Thanks man. Cartagena has a touristy part, and a non-touristy part. Barranquilla is NOT the place to go if you like excitement and constant things to do. There are good restaurants but beyond that you’ve got nothing. Lol and many people would consider my life “boring” because excitement to me is stopping at the grocery store after the gym 😂😂😂 Quilla is perfect for a relaxed low key lifestyle
that boring city is sometimes hard to explain: I live in Orlando Florida, the fun city, the amusement parks, etc, but take that out and you are immersed in the same boring routine, that's live, I worked at the amusement parks and one you leave them you don't want to go there again, you get tired of so many fantasy.@@jonathanells
Since you are an admitted walker, what shoes do you wear with your athletic outfit ? I feel like the cushy Hoka style shoes may be clunky and not nimble enough for rough city terrain, could be wrong though
Great question, I feel great when I walk more and it’s great for health! I did another video specifically on this, actually! I’m not sure how to link it, but check it out. I use barefoot shoes. But even if you don’t like my choices, I recommend something low profile and flexible. Nothing big and clunky
@@jonathanellsI just found it! Thanks
@@Cooliewhistleswelcome!
Dude, I've never seen a Hyundai TV that's insane. I might head to Baranquilla to film some content.
Hahah you definitely should! You’ll have lots of eyes on you, that’s for sure. Content isn’t common or seen as normal there yet, like it would be in Medellin
Thank you for sharing this content. $850 per month for that place is simply amazing.
It really is- and this is Airbnb prices, which are much higher. If you get a VISA to live here and rent a place you have to furnish, you can find places much much cheaper than $850. But FYI prices are going up here due to the influx of tourists leaving Medellin for here.
actually its super expensive....i had something very similar without hot water...3 bedroom....not furnished but i have my own things here.....swimming pool and 24 hr guarded area all for $355....not from airbnb of course.....can you see how much they inflate the prices because you cant rent as a local from real estate agencies when your here for a month or two....
Would have been nice to see more of the city and the ocean side. How's the beaches, what's interesting to do in Bar?
There isn’t an ocean side to Barranquilla. It’s called Puerto Colombia and I have a separate video for that. There is the Malecón (near the river) and I can definitely do a video there next time. There isn’t much interesting to do here honestly. Come here if you like to take it easy. If you like to explore, you need to go to different areas 👍🏼
What beaches do residents of Barranquila go to?@@jonathanells
They go to Puerto Colombia (30 minutes or less away) or for vacation go to Santa Marta (approx 2.25 hours away)
I have videos on both!
Barranquilla is great, but not from 11 am to 5 pm. Those 6 hours are scorching hot.
Haha yeah they are scorching hot, I guess you gotta like that type of thing. You definitely don’t want to go to Santa Marta- it’s 1-2 degrees hotter plus more humid. It felt like the inferno of hell in our 3rd month there lol
I am considering relocating to Barranquilla from Chicago. Good real estate prices.
Yup super inexpensive but it’s a lot different from Chicago Lol how familiar are you with Barranquilla?
I have watched RUclips videos on Barranquilla in the past over the past 4 years. I hope to travel down there in the next year and a half. I did visit Panama to last December to scout it as a potential retirement destination. I plan to visit a few locations in Colombia this year. Overall I am scouting potential retirement destinations in Panama, Colombia, and Brazil. The United States is becoming cost prohibitive to retire in.
I get it about the prices - Canada is even worse! Colombia is WAY cheaper than Panama. I won’t consider Panama because I don’t think it’s as beautiful and because it’s the 2nd or 3rd most costly Latin country and that tanks the value for me 🤷🏻♂️
Is Barranquilla cheaper than Medellin? What estrato is that apt located ?
Yes! Barranquilla is cheaper than Medellin and much cheaper than Cartagena. But, the prices have gone up in the past year. Especially on apartments because the gringos have caught on to Barranquilla and the “bubble” burst on Medellin and there are TONES of tourists there now. And there are more security problems now apparently. So yes, it’s cheaper- but I don’t suspect for much longer
If I go to Barranquilla, I'll only be there a few days at most. Do lower and mid-price hotels there have air conditioning?
Yes, I’d bet that all hotels would have air conditioning because it’s hot all year around here. Even a hotel you find for $20 USD day will have air conditioning. Hope that helps.
Thank you very much. I hope to travel to Colombia later this year. At the moment, I have some health issues to take care of. I plan to go to Pereira, Cartago, and Medellín to see friends there. I also want to go to the Atlantic Coast of Colombia. I haven't decide where exactly I'll go. @@jonathanells
There are loads of options brother. You can find something great about every area
@@jonathanellsThank you for your reply.
Im America speak 5 languages and i tell ya! Now im like 250 pounds, but when i got to tropical places like bangkok or Barranquilla i lose like 50 pounds in a month! When i come back here i gain it back 😅 i wanna move to Barranquilla
Well, there’s one thing for sure- it’s easier to stay active in hot climates because there are more reasons to get outdoors! But 50lbs in a month is impossible lol I get your point though, many people do lose weight on vacations due to increased activity levels and having way less stress (which reduces stress eating even if people are aware or not). You gotta get back to Barranquilla my friend! 👍🏼
@@jonathanells yeah not 22 kilos, More like 11 but yeah when i travel i walk so much plus i do a lot of bed exersice 😂

Traffic in Barranquilla has been steadily worse... personal cars, taxi's, and motorcycles... I married a Barranquilla woman 20 years ago and we visit at least twice a year. The Riverwalk area is nice but during holidays and events it's a hassle. The driving is a free for all and no rules or courtesies are respected . Colombia and it's people are wonderful but the above comments should be understood and expected.
100% It’s a free for all and there is no courtesy or rules. It’s like that all over Latin America I’ve been but Colombia might be a bit worse. I’m on foot and never drive so that part doesn’t bother me. Thanks for the comment
@@jonathanells yeah...I take taxi's or Uber or the relatives. Taxis still cheap but every time I go back it's more expensive.
The whole world is getting more expensive. It’s a tough place
you're getting gringo priced on that apartment lol
The funny thing is- it’s one of the cheapest ones on airbnb. You can find cheaper ones local if you don’t want furnished, and if you do a 6-12 month lease.
@@jonathanells exactly.....people can stay on a tourist visa 6 months....get a real estate agent for 6-12 months and buy a few items....thats what i did and i was paying 350 usd monthly....
What activities do you do in Barranquilla to stay active and not get bored?
I haven’t been bored in 20 years. Lol I find pleasure in basic things. Running my business and coaching clients. Gym. Grocery store. Walking. Cooking. Date night with my girlfriend. Normal shit. Some people find that boring- for me it’s perfect
@@jonathanells yeah, I understand that. when I was in Medellin, it’s so hyper focused on the hook up culture that I didn’t have a whole lot of activities to do during the day to keep me busy
I hate hook up culture lol everyone is in Medellin for that 🤷🏻♂️
We left in 1961. Colombia is no different from many places where there is danger. Just be careful where you go. No different from the problems in New York, St. Francisco, Paris, Rome, etc.. Except that Colombia is having a good tourist boom, don't destroy the golden 🪿 goose by cheating turist. The government should do something about thieves or bad women.
Agree with you! I lived in Miami, and I felt more uncomfortable in parts of Miami than I do in public in most of the cities in Colombia. Obviously there are always areas to avoid, etc in any city
$850 US for an apt. Hardly cheap, surprised any Colombian could afford it.
My girlfriend is Colombian from Barranquilla and she calls the people without letting them know I’m a foreigner- and we’re getting “better” prices. It was higher than this normally. The entire building other than me were Colombians. Very nice too
yes agreed i used to live in a smilair place for 350 usd....24hr guarded with simming pool.....all though a real estate agency...
Yeah I’ve heard of people getting those prices and we’ve looked. But can’t find them. Then again, we always look for places with hot water and laundry in unit. If we didn’t want those things we could find way cheaper
A very good friend went to Barranquilla 2 months ago .. was a victim of armed robbery , they followed him after he left the airport , drove the taxi off the street and put a gun to his face ,.stole his passport, cash , ect. Be very careful
Wow that is crazy, sorry to hear for your friend. I had fear of that happening but not from another car, from the taxi himself. I had an Uber from the airport charge me 220,000 COP for the trip when it was supposed to be 45,000 COP. I disputed it with Uber and got my money back. I haven’t been robbed yet and maybe I’m lucky but I do feel Barranquilla in general is a bit better than other areas and cities in colombia for this.
I snipped a picture of your breakfast from Exito and put it in a discussion forum where the students had to answer? Te gustaria comer este Plato? Si ? No?
Most of them said” no me gustaria comer este plato porque incluye salchichas y jamon. It’s a high Jewish population.
how was the nightlife, the women, the dating life, real estate.
Nightlife isn’t my thing, but from the little I’ve experienced and what I’ve heard it’s pretty lacklustre. This place is suuuuper laid back and chill. If you want nightlife Cartagena and Medellin are better. Can’t speak on real estate. I’m a Health & Fitness Coach lol. I met my girlfriend in Barranquilla last year so that definitely says something because she’s an amazing person and I’m grateful for her 🙏🏼
@@jonathanells do u have ig
How many times have you been robbed? Lol😂
Never have been robbed. Other than these videos I’m super cautious and live a generally simple lifestyle and rarely go out at night. If you go out at night your chance go wayyyy up
relaxed lifestyle jajajajaja
Yessir nothing happens fast around here, and there isn’t much to do if you’re high maintenance and need constant action or fun.
People in the caribean coast take things slow, Bogotá has a faster pace
That’s why I don’t like Bogota. And the fact it’s grey all of the time.
Which colmian cities have beautiful colorful homes and buildings? Any?
Don't like bland blah colorless architecture.
You’re looking in the wrong country. Barranquilla has *some* colorful architecture, but not much. Medellín is beautiful, but if you specifically want colorful homes and buildings, you should be looking at the Carribean islands.
I live in Peru 6 years I wish Colombia had the same food as Peru But it's not even close

This dude said I'm, Canadian. Starting fights in Columbia gives us Canadians a bad name. Start that shit in Vegas lol another country that isn't his. How about keep that shit in Canada
I’m not sure what you’re referring to? People keep mentioning Vegas. What the fuck is going lol
you’re paying too much for your gym membership, I pay 12 usd in a really good gym
That’s the price now in Bodytech. It was basically the same in Peru, too. And I got my girlfriend who is Colombian to call and ask prices to make sure I wasn’t getting gringo priced- and it was actually MORE expensive because the prices have gone up. I’m okay with paying more for the gym because it’s close, convenient and not busy like SmartFit. But what I’m not okay paying more on is food, Uber/taxi, and rent. That often happens when they see you’re a tourist. One Uber charged me 200,000 COP for a ride from the airport with my girlfriend that was quoted in the App at 52,000. I of course disputed it and got it refunded - but that’s the shit I hate
