Rather than making fun of Badders for losing the Parkrun record, I think it is appropriate to celebrate the amazing achievement he made and how long he held it for - fantastic legacy Andy!!
That’s a excellent point the fact the record stood for so long considering the advances in what we wear etc plus obviously being aided by 6 pacemaker’s, not matter how you look at it what a fantastic achievement to of had that record for so long. Well done Andy
I still very much admire Andy's record for the same reason as the new Andy mentioned. He just went out for a Saturday morning run in normal shoes without pacers etc. So it really much elevated his efforts, because it took a full team and modern carbon plated shoes to beat his "casual run" record. So for me these two records are not really comparable, they're absolutely amazing and mind blowing in their own way but shouldn't compete against each other.
After finding this channel recently and watching a LOT of the older videos.. 2 years old..3 years old..it’s great to be only 4 minutes after this one is uploaded. Sorry for your loss Andy. Your record was incredible. And it continues to be an incredible time. That it held for 4 years shows what an impressive time it was. And will motivate you to find your best running self in the time ahead through your recovery. You work incredibly hard and that’s what has got you the results. Good luck to you in future, hope that you can get the record back but well done to Andy Butchart (must be in the name) who took your record for their incredible personal achievement. Thank you to the Running Channel for continuing to bring excellent content. I love this stuff as I’m on my recovery back and feelin the running fire. After a few years out with personal health issues I’ve fallen a LOT but want to get it all back! And your content is an inspiration and makes me want to keep pushing forwards. Thank you. Rick, you are the man, I can't imagine what you have gone through and trying to get back into PB territory, I have the most respect for you keep it going ❤👍🙌
Rick and his Parkrun PB - I met Rick at your London Marathon event this year and thanked him for being such a great inspiration, as you all are. The knee injury was heartbreaking (I'm not a doctor 😂) but the recovery has been wonderful. Thank you for sharing that with everyone. Well done Rick! 👏👏
Parkrun world record wasn't the only one to go recently ... the Backyard Ultra world record went too at Dead Cow Gully, Australia where Phil Gore completed 102 laps, or 450 miles, and ran for around 4.5 DAYS ... on the hour, every hour. Just insane! Oh and I also originate from The Wirral :)
Who is he trying to kid ‘it was just a laugh, it’s all a bit of fun’ and then saying he didn’t want to break the record by a huge margin. Why couldn’t he say ‘I really went for it and really wanted to break the record’. You don’t have 6 pacers for a bit of fun. Badders is the true hero here! End of story.
Rick… not running related but did you manage to hear Kezia Gill sing at Bruce Springsteen concert? She is absolutely awesome 👏 Love love love the running channel
James has run it, his top tips are to enjoy the atmosphere at the start and in the first few miles when you are in Marathon. They are very emotionally charged and will fuel you for the miles to come. The bus journey is pretty long to the start so make sure to catch up on some extra sleep or just relax but try not to look out the windo too much as you’ll see much of the route!
Love the channel. Content and info is great. QUESTION: I have been training in a 10kg weight vest. Doing the couch to 5k in the hope of getting a better 5k time. Is repeated training in a weight vest bad for my running technique? Will this actually make me faster when I take the vest off? Is it more likely to cause injuries? What are your thoughts on weighted vests? Many thanks Marc Hoy Southampton
Absolutely love this podcast, I have a question though? I’m in a middle of a training plan for a half marathon, the training plan is In minutes not miles, I’d love to know if this is ok, I’m frightened that I won’t get enough miles in when the half marathon comes around, what do you guys think?
I’m curious as to how much of Andy wants to regain his crown. Also you have done the 5 toughest parkruns before, ever thought about doing new parkrun. I’m slightly biased and think the Denton Dene parkrun in the west end of Newcastle is a good one to try. But not for a pb, we are a lovely undulating course.
New subscriber, just returned to running after about 15 years my previous training regime was simple try to improve x distance time untill it stabilised the increase distance to x+1 and repeat, looking at your videos i hear terms like long run, easy run, tempo run & flatout run i get what long, easy and flatout are but what on earth is a tempo run?
Some more context to the western states record: it was set in 2012 and nobody has been within 20 minutes of it until now. The 2nd place woman, katie schide, was also under the previous record. It's a hot race, but this year was much cooler than average
Edinburgh I made 32nd fastest in the UK in my most recent fastest/slowest list. So, on a reasonable day, that is pretty quick and probably no more than about 10 seconds slower than the ones above it bar the one at the very top (Pegwell Bay) that is somewhat short of 5K. Bushy Park only 115th but that partly reflects all year conditions not bone dry summer grass/gravel trails when you don't lose too much IMHO.
Can you do a video of Sarah doing Brigid Kosgei's exact training plan, Andsy attempting to break the half marathon world record of 57:31 and also Andy attempting to run a 2:30 marathon
It was a "cool" year for western states and because of the large amount of snow fall this year the river was too fast to run through so they used boats instead of the ropes they usually use across the river
That Daniel Craig, in Rick's opinion, would be a faster runner than Tom Cruise because he comes from the Wirral is an interesting debating point. Apart from the famous former James Bond the only other famous native of that part of the world that comes immediately to mind is Lady Hamilton, mostly famous for her shocking relationship with Admiral Lord Nelson. I'm now wondering how hot her parkrun times were?
ive been a runner for almost 7 months now. i just finished my first half marathon in 1:48, but ive picked up an injury that makes unable to run for at least 4 weeks. i know ill lose a fair bit of my progress, but is there some sort of ''muscle memory'' here, so i dont have to spend 7 months gaining what i already gained. it kind of freaks me out (Ps, i know i wont lose 100% of my progress) but you know what i mean
Immensely impressive to have held the record for so long. And arguably more challenging course and equipment wise. Some potential interesting follow up videos - how long do records stand for in running, testing the effect of pacers on 'normal' runners, at parkrun, and whether others could make equivalent PB improvement as Andy did that day in 2012.
Listening to the description of how he had dropped pacers early and then picked them back up as he passed them at 3.5km to 4.5km. And to say they made all the difference. I would say that shouldn't stand as a parkrun record as its definitely not in the spirit of parkrun. Even with official world records you can't have pacers jump in to the event.
I'd say helping your friends to a faster time is all in the spirit of parkrun. I'd Iove to see more people around the country trying to break the record to see how low it can go.
@@mattrobinson1427 I'd agree if those friends ran the whole thing. Parkrun is mainly about participation and his friends didn't actually take part in the full course.
Totally agree, it shouldn't count as a parkrun record, in the same way Kipchoge's sub-2 hour marathon doesn't count as the marathon record because of the artificial assistance he got. Having pacers is fine, but not when they drop in and out because they can't keep up!
@runningchannel Question; Is it weird that when I run, I lose mobility in my wrists? Like, I can move them, but the quick rotation I need to open the camera app on my phone just isn't doable.
How Andy's 'friends' could wriggle out of the woodwork to take pleasure in him losing the record screams lots about them. Andy's interview with the new record holder demonstrated great grace and insight into what Parkrun is really about which is so much more than getting faster.
_'take pleasure in him losing the record'_ Nobody takes pleasure for such a thing, they just remembered him when he got mentioned on the news and thought they'd give him a shout out.
In some ways I'd like to see someone come much closer to the actual 5000m world record; but in some ways I hope no one tries beating the new time for another 11 years.
Yes, but it would have to be on a fast course like Edinburgh. No corners for example. From memory Edinburgh is 2km straight, a 1km loop and 2km back. Like a lollipop 🍭

Just a bit of British/runners banter
