This song has a weird history. Writers Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart knew they wrote a cool song and got RCA’s Liverpool Five to do but they never released. They went next to Paul Revere, who together with Terry Melcher, cut it and it came out in ‘66 on their Midnight Ride album. When they found out it wouldn’t be a single they were pissed. Singer Mark Lindsey tells this story on the Ugly Things podcast. The two went and got the Raiders’ tape and took it to The Monkees, telling them it was just a demo of the song. The Monkees then cut it. It was the first Monkee B-side to chart making #20 on Billboard Hot 100. I’m A Believer was the A-side.
I got the vocal / instrumental separation from RUclips’s great Digital Split channel. I wanted to change the song though, first with the intro, the volume of the vocals and eliminating Lindsey’s over the top growling vocals.
