This is a song about how I’ve used smoking weed to dull the pain and anxiety of imposter syndrome, loneliness, and fear. It’s a freestyle I sang late one night after I felt particularly ashamed of myself for getting high.
In order to shoot this video I retreated back to my childhood home in Maplewood, NJ. I wanted to pay homage to the place where a rebellious and eager-eyed 12-year-old first discovered drugs as a way to escape. Ever since then I’ve dealt with substance abuse to varying degrees, but it wasn’t until the age of 19 that I began to rely heavily on weed to get through life. I’ve grown so much as an artist and a human being in ways that I could never have imagined, but bad habits, dependency, addiction whatever you wanna call it, is a really tough thing to shake.
Some people might roll their eyes that I’m talking about weed and not a heavier drug but weed has garnered such a positive reputation these days that I feel obliged to open up a conversation about the negatives. Cause they are very real.
I’m still smoking weed and dealing with the repercussions of abusing it but I’m so glad that I was willing to admit the truth that night. Through my honesty, I hope that this song and video can serve as something inspirational for my community. I make music for myself. But I release it for my people.
