HEADPHONE WARNING AT 8:54!! I lowered it in post, but it seems to not have been low enough. P.S. Glad to get this episode out to you all. THREE CHEERS FOR BATTLE AXE BOY!
one interesting thing to notice, at the start of the battle the dragon was using long-ranged or sweeping attacks to try and keep Stark away - it was *terrified* of letting him get into melee range
I think of the prior episode when we first meet Stark and his retelling of his true nature upon first encountering the dragon. When they showed the dragon "chopping up houses like vegetables", the animators showed the dragon in a way like animals do when having a stand-off or territorial dispute with each other, like stomping about, roaring and flexing. The reason the dragon was wary of Stark is not just it's assessment of him, but also how Stark was basically doing the same thing by creating that fissure in the cliff, without realizing it himself that he was doing it. For the next 3 years, the dragon saw Stark as saying, "This is my territory".
I've pointed it out on a few other reactors versions of this episode, but I think it gets overlooked that Stark was paralyzed in fear for almost 3 yrs... of something he beat in less than 30 seconds. We all could learn from that imo.
Something I think about is that when Stark first first confronted that dragon, he was 14 years old. Yeah, he was paralyzed by fear once he stepped in, but it's incredible that he stepped in at all.
I'm really glad that you caught on to Fern's reaction to Stark when he explains the reason why he doesn't have a lot of time. It wasn't just him being genuine in his goal but that it was something he needed to accomplish in a set time before the death of his master, the most relatable trait she has to him. The animators did a great job of showing the perfect expression on her face.
The "ridiculous and fun journey" reminds me of my own days hiking and camping with friends. Some of the best memories aren't the beautiful views at the top of mountains or rushing waterfalls, but the inside jokes made over campfires and trailside lunches. And the world's most picturesque latrine.
i loved the art direction for Stark's fight with the Solar Dragon. it's a testament to the animators being excellent at their craft, adapting (checks notes) SEVEN panels in the manga into 30 seconds of bad assery 💪🏼
The magic of this show seems to really come down to how they handle exposition: Show without telling. You're constantly rewarded for paying attention and letting it take you along for the journey. A re-watch is just as rewarding, tho your envy of those who are experiencing it for the first time becomes a new problem to bear. Glad to see you both enjoy this amazing story. Also, prior to meeting Frieren.. Stark's assumed kill count: 0 A day after meeting Frieren, Stark's assumed kill count: 1 and title of Dragon Slayer also acquired.
Being a coward and courageous all stem from fear. If you run away because of fear, don't be ashamed of it. We've survived as a species because of it. If you fight despite the fear, that is a choice. A courageous act overcoming fear is also a trait that helped our species stand here today. Fear is your friend, as is pain. It is not disgraceful to feel them. But don't let it determine who you are. Keep moving.
"Old hag!" LOL! Naughty Fern... shame on you! And Frieren wanting to just chill out in the city and go shopping for magic stuff was great and her reaction to being found out was too cute.
Fear is a defence mechanism. It will keep you alive in many situations. A true warrior knows when to listen to the fear, and when to fight despite it. Ignoring your fear is reckless and will only get you killed. I think that's what Eisen meant when he said fear got him this far - he listened to it when it mattered, and fought through it when necessary.
for what I hear in another comment section was that Frieren said 30sec because that was what she believed would take him to take the dragon down. She wasn't pre casting anything nor got her staff out.
i dont believe this. she said 30 seconds the day before as well before seeing him fight or knowing his skill. plus she said "you exceeded my expectations" the reason she didnt do anything was because as the fight went on she knew she didnt have to.
I love how invested you are in this show and how you notice all the small details and hints, kinda refreshing after all the facepalm moments while watching others. PS.: if you already like the Fern-Stark show then i highly suggest Apothecary Diaries for a future react series, you'll love it
the show does well when it comes to introducing the characters to the audience in just a few episodes, so the audience feel close to and knows them well. then that's what make us always feels nostalgic whenever Frieren reminisces about her past
It's so much fun watching this again with the two of you. There's stuff I missed and different interpretations of events and motivations that are a lot of fun to consider. As you note in this reaction, Stark is indeed a perfect addition to the party. Frieren and Fern are both rather serious most of the time, and Stark's comedic personality makes for a welcome contrast. Plus, when he gets solemn - such as when he talks about repaying his debt to his master - it hits all the harder emotionally to the viewer because he is the "comic relief" by default.
You quickly become aware that Himmel is just one of the greatest characters ever. I don't just mean anime. As someone who loves anime. Loves LoTR, high fantasy, mages, knights, action and slice of life, and just a great story... This is easily my favorite anime of all time and one of my favorite shows of all time. Right up there with Band of Brothers.
I mean yes in the wide shots the axe of Eisen and of Stark look very alike, but in closer shots they are different. Lately more and more make this statement, which doesn't hold. Anyway great reaction.
Hi my favorite reactors, glad you're back with a new one. Tanjirou + Zenitsu is so spot on. John Freaking out with the Frieren / Himmel parallel and Kim... oh Kim our shounen girl teared eye, gotta love it, Im basically the same on nearly every Himmel Scene/flashback, the combo tear and a smile, going to happen often ^^.
What I like about Eisen's line compared to the GoT quote is that Eisen isn't saying he's brave. All he does is not run away. He doesn't overcome the fear so much as he acts in spite of it. From the outside, it can look like bravery, but I like the implication that you don't ever have to feel like you've made it. Like Fern said, when the scary thing backs you into a corner, you act--even if you were afraid the whole time.
I agree this episode seemed to go so fast. The stop at the gate to the north almost seems like a little epilogue to the "Gathering the party" arc, rather than a story by itself. I also love how right off the bat Fern and Stark seem to be learning from each other. I love their interactions!
Small funfact: Eisen say he was afraid of Stark. Small retrospective from the Manga (i guess). It was describing how Eisen was hit by a dragon tail, fly across the whole Battlefield into a wall and stand up likes nothing happen. And Eisen says he was afraid xD He hit Stark intuitional caused by a self-defense reflex. Only because Stark get Eisen the Salt too fast .. xD just a joke. I love so much how the VA from Eisen fits so perfect. you hear the anger, the fear and when he talk about stark that he trained him everything he know you hear the proud. Thats awesome. Stark just beeing a decent bluffer but killed a dragon in one hit under 30 seconds .. i think stark doesn't know what the spell does, maybe thats the reason why he answered "I'm not small" xD
@@r.a.fgattaiguy845you only see the bigger dessert for like 5 seconds and you can’t see it side by side with the smaller one. In the manga, you can go at your own pace and go back easier.
@@ObiwanNekody yeah, that´s the joke, the ice cream is smaller but the bartender says that it isn´t, Stark just grew up so it looks smaller, the other things Stark says just prove that he´s buying the bs

yeah this anime just do it RIGHT with the flow of narrative. You can never feel any bore while watching it even if you think "this part's gonna bore me" in the beginning.
The specific reason why Eisen hit Stark was because while they were arguing (I am sure it's not specified what they are arguing about, or I forgot) is Stark rose his fist and Eisen thought Stark was gonna hit him and he moved in reflex.

Eren whispered to his ear "Tatakae". And henceforth, Stark shed his fears and move forward.
Also to add, when facing an obstacle/fear it doesn't mean you have to face it alone. We all need the help we can get.

With Stark's luck, he'll probably find Eisen to have passed after they return, but not before they reached Ende so he has to walk all the way back.
