My Self-Isolation in Ladakh | A Trip to Matho Phu

  • I was at the Matho Nagrang on festival on the 9th of March when news first broke out of a coronavirus infection in Ladakh. Two people returning from Iran tested positive for the virus and that put all of Ladakh into high alert.
The authorities moved quickly. The infected people and their whole village was put under quarantine immediately. People started wearing masks everywhere. Even the very popular Matho Nargrang festival hardly had any visitors after the news broke out. The local administration even stopped issuing inner line permits to prevent the virus from spreading to the remote villages of Ladakh.
All this put me in a dilemma on whether to stay back or leave. I was in the process of making a short film about the Matho Nagrang festival and there was a ceremony on April 2nd which I was keen on covering. Moreover, the sparsely populated villages of Ladakh should be safer from the virus than the crowded cities of the plains. But I also had aging parents at home to think about. So I decided to stay back in Ladakh till the ceremony and head home immediately after that.
I booked my tickets for April 4th and headed to the mountains behind the Matho village to camp and self isolate myself from the virus. It was the best way to protect myself and also people with whom I was staying with in Leh.
I spent 6 nights camping in the mountains. I could have stayed longer but I was running low on fuel and also was anxious for some news from home. So I went down towards the village and the news I heard from my family and friends about the virus was not very encouraging. So I returned back to Leh the next morning and flew out on the 24’th of March.

So don't feel the pressure of weaving in a coherent story or subject matter in each of your videos. You could have made a video about what the wolf was upto through the days you were there - and we would have been fine! Or even a daily vlog (rough/unstructured) is very insightful for city dwellers. Just suggestions - you doing great anyway! :)

    "Matho-phoo"
Matho is the name of the village, a little walk away from here. It is a large village, lying 24kms south of Leh.
Phoo(in Ladakhi- the local language here) : a grazing place for a shepherd and his herd of animals usually very close to the village. Almost every village here has a phoo of their own.

Phoo in Ladakhi actually means upper area of a valley.
Most of the villages are located in a valley..
Obviously, villages are located in lower or middle area of a valley to make life easier.. So the upper area of a valley is called Phoo!

A Winter Storm in Changthang | Living with the Changpas of Ladakh - 4/6" and really liked it. Love your dedication to explore such remote places of the country and documenting their difficulties & showing the life there. You are introducing us our beautiful, nice, sturdy & resilient people of the mountains. I love your voice. Very grounded voice. It sounds like ours. There are already lot of youtubers creating India specific videos. Due to English video you are creating a great international group of individuals who are falling in love with our country. I think you should upload the same videos in hindi as well. Quality of your videos is great & hence I must request you to work with international group of youtubers who love our motherland. They will translate them for sure. I recently met a Scottish lady she said "In India, as soon I landed I felt I am at home. Also, she said that mother India is my spiritual mother land". Bharat mata ki Jay. Jai Hind. Thanks a lot.

Love the content and the simplicity of it! I think spending time like that all by yourself in the wild is both a huge challenge and a luxury.. While most of us dream of experiencing such moments, we don't either get a chance or the skills to lead such a life even if for a short while.. Keep up the incredible work!

You are the best traveller as in date whose experiences I have watched on media. No showing off, not much ado. Just the flow and synergy with the nature. I could feel myself there. Thank you. Waiting for more sir. All the best.

You had a good experience & done a good achievement in 2020 by isolating yourself for 5 days in the mountains and experienced the beauty of nature & wildlife.

Absolutely amazing, refreshing, adventure travelogue ! Very succinctly put, no travel narration, no gear razmataz , just plain, simple, minimal words, almost like a sage ! I highly admire your timelapse videos on ladakh after you'd asked me to check on IIM. This particular piece & this style of Vlogging is purely entertaining for the viewer & i won't be surprised the places you visit become tourist hotspots in near future. Kudos to the fine camerawork & daring of the mind !! Keep it up !!

I seriously don't want my videos contributing to the commercialisation of these places. Thats why most of my videos are about places that are bit far away and difficult for normal people to get to.

I have lived alone for most of my life. I do wonder a lot myself e.g. pilgrimages & exploring new places etc. etc.Have not done anything like what you have done like camping in mountains. Only thought about it but I have not done any camping. You have great movie making skills. You can tell your stories and experiences. You are showing us how to have "beautiful single existence".
