I think the reasoning for going with traffic is this: when going against the flow of traffic, and you approach an intersection, drivers that are on your left (coming into the intersection perpendicular to you) making a right hand turn against you may not see you. When going with the flow of traffic, this kind of accident is reasonably reduced.
