Better than a tv documentary. Shows how much money is wasted at the bbc when they couldn’t in a million years film something as good as this about our history. Well done. Truly fantastic
I love how you guys interact as a family when I was married and spent time on boats with my kids my wife was never there It was always just my kids and I and whenever any type of work was to happen It was always just my kids and I are by myself. I am currently looking to sell my home and start boat life again
I love the banter … I think you two are a very happy couple it’s lovely to see the way you both play each other off. I think I’d love to go and visit down here next year take our caravan down and camp somewhere near
That was very interesting guys. It will be good to see more of the Medusa, I hope there is more video. The Mary Rose, I will watch anything about that, I remember when they were recovering it. Nelson's Ship was awsome to see. The propeller joke was funny, poor Gemma. Thanks for sharing.... again. From Australia. 🇦🇺🦘🐨🇦🇺
One of my favorite episodes, love old ships and I get that from trips to Liverpool ship museum and other places. That's not to say I don't like your other videos I do, in fact finding anything entertaining on RUclips that you can binge watch is hard, but your channel has now taken number 1 spot on list.
It’s amazing the impact on world history brought about by tradition of the Royal Navy during the 18th and 19th century. The British Empire spread across the planet. And much of it in wooden ships. Forest converted to ship masterpieces by skilled marine craftsmen. It’s amazing what they accomplished without electricity. You wanting to see and touch these icons was fun to watch. Your respect for their past and those who sailed them into harms way is thoughtful and informative. Makes you proud of your heritage. Love the video.
September 1971 I was serving onboard The USS Intrepid CVS-11 An American Aircraft carrier. We docked directly behind the HMS Victory. I took the tour and took pics Of Intrepid from Victory and Pics of victory from the flight deck of Intrepid.
Portsmouth. I took Liberty there in 1992 when my ship pulled in after a Mid-Winter crossing from the U.S. to Norway. The Artic Ocean in winter is no joke, it beat the crap out of our 40,000 ton ship. I loved our visit to Portsmouth and visited some of the same sights you did. Spinnaker Tower wasn't there of course (not yet anyway) but the old town, HMS Warrior, Mary Rose and HMS Victory ... I wish we had been able to stay longer. There is so much there now, open to the public that wasn't when I visited. The M-33, Motor Gunboats, landing craft and #4 Boathouse just to start with. While I spent as much time as I could exploring HMS Victory no visitors were allowed down in the graving dock. It's good to see that serious preservation work is being done for the Lady. I'm very much looking forward to seeing your visit to Medusa. Knowing you folks it should be interesting.
Brilliant...and a bit funny too! Always look forward to your Friday afternoon video. Looking forward to your impression of Medusa. From the short video she cuts the water nicely. The engine room looks first rate. Top side looks original, all business.
Thank you Gemma and Simon for taking us along on your trip to Portsmouth and the History that is represented there. Be well ... keep smiling ... Later Later.
M33 built by Workman Clarke in Belfast, the other WW! ship is HMS Caroline now an exhibit in Belfast harbour. As part of your ticket for the Royal Navy dockyard you would have got a free ferry ride to Gosport and the submarine museum. Brilliant value, the full ticket lets you see everything plus 3 boat rides and it lasts for a year, awesome.
Thanks for that. I lived near Portsmouth many years ago and you saw more in your short stay than I’ve ever seen. Not sure why some people are giving the thumbs down, jealousy I suppose?
Great video of all the history associated with the Royal Navy and scenic views too. It reminds me I have a model of HMS Victory to make so I should make a start.
Did you know that HMS Victory is still in service in the Royal Navy and is the home of the First Sea Lord since 2012. So her commission pendant is for 243 years . Her masts are being restored and we have approx another 15 years yes 15 years of work before they go back on board Victory.
What a fascinating and enjoyable trip you guys are having. Thanks for sharing it with those of us who can't go there! Totally awesome!! You deserve a break! Loved the snogging pose lol.
Good to see visitors enjoying my home city. My profile picture is actually the sally port that Nelson left through to board Victory for his final trip to Trafalgar, she was always moored in the Solent so didn't need Propellers. :)
Great video, I was studying for the finals of my degree in Portsmouth in 1982, I can still remember all the ships in the harbour sounding their horns as Mary Rose came in for the first time in hundreds of years..
Another great video from my home town and the history is mind blowing, it's a shame you couldn't see HMS Victory in all splendour, as a young lad I would visit HMS Victory at regular intervals (back then it was free) and I would join the guided tour which in those days was given by a serving naval rating, the plaque on the deck where Nelson fell used to be raised by a few inches and it was a joke that no wonder he fell there with that sticking up out of the deck, HMS Victory is a wonderful example of ship building and if you had visited the museum village of Bucklers Hard you would have seen the sort of ship yard similar to the one where HMS Victory was built. By the way Victory is still a ship of the Royal Navy, she has never been decommissioned, a huge fan of your amazing journey. One day I hope to visit you guys and see Sarinder in the flesh. Martin
Remember watching the endeavour of raising the Mary Rose, as a kid. Real nail biting stuff, there was no guarantee they'd even raise what they managed to get. Must go and visit her myself some day. I'd recommend having a look at the Frigate Unicorn if you're ever up this way: she's berthed in Dundee (shares a dock with the North Carr lightship) and although she's nowhere near as complete as Victory or Warrior, you get a very good sense of how sailors must've been 4' tall or permanently bent double! I'm 5'10" and I lost count of how many times I hit my head... But, on the upside, she's afloat and watertight, and there is a long term plan to recreate her topside. Fascinating video, thanks.
Wowee , that was an incredible tour of British Naval History - thanks so much for the tour. Come to think of it, this I think was the cleanest I’ve seen you both, which allows me to say you both clean up well. So appreciate your humor with one another. I’m so looking forward to your next episode where us subscribers get to see Ship Happens sister ship. For me you both have the best and most interesting channel on UTube. I’m so glad your not going to make your boat back into its wartime form but make into a useful floating home which will always give off HISTORICAL VIVES.
Mary Rose was in Thunder Bay ,Ontario many years back. She looks beautiful still. Love the chance to see what your boat originally looked. Hopefully you have gained some new momentum to continue on. Love the fun you both clearly are having. Enjoy. (See reply for correction on what ship was in Thunder bay)
After reading some of the notes I must have the incorrect name of the sailing ship I saw. I'm sure it had rose in it. Now I must go looking for what ship was there in the 90's. After a quick search it was the Rose . Later a Finish tall ship visited.
Great video. We are making plans for a visit in 2025 I hope to add Portsmouth as a side trip. As a professional mariner I will be thrilled to see all that maritime history.
Got some photos of the Mary rose just after it was pulled up , had to poke my camera out of my coat to get the shots . As taking pictures was banned . P.s GR is George Rex 😜
Thank you both for the really nice video especially on the HMS Victory it's astonishing how large the vessel is. Lovely to see you having some time away from your restoration project.
Nice goin m8s! Thanks for this vlog! You probably already know, nothing is recorded about about the french sailor who shot Lord Nelson, and google can't tell how tall people were when they were running victory. there were like 5, decks, 6 if you count where they kept the officers an the captain. Mary Rose is kool! HMS Warrior is amazing! Been a bit lucky-ish, been onboard a decommissioned ww2 ship down this way, steel, more for the crew on Mary Rose, Victory an Warrior than there was on HMAS Melbourne. Thanks alot!
It was a converted tank landing craft at the end of the video, that pioneered roll on roll off ferries, the first ever sailed out of Preston to Larne, the original drawbridge winding gear is still in situ on the dock at Preston.
Good vid.👍 HMS Victory comes from that time when the Royal Navy had ships of wood and men of steel, whereas today we have ships of steel ---- and you can figure the rest out.😉
Loved the vlog guys, felt like I've been to Portsmouth with you! Gemma makes me laugh, can't keep her hands off a 'large weapon'!! 😂 Thanks for your efforts you two, as always! ... 🤗
Hope you are enjoying a pint at Gun Wharf. I love Portsmouth. Warrior, Mary Rose and HMS Victory. Did you learn what defines a Royal Warship of the day?
Thanks for the visit to Portsmouth, so much history there. The HMS Victory is such an incredible ship, can’t imagine what it would have been like confronting her in the day. A sight to behold.
Your right a spectacular ship, but you wouldn't have faced just Victory she was a ship of the line and there would have been dozens of war fighters "in a long line" terrifying, truly.
Never made it to Portsmouth while serving in the USN. Glad you made a highlight of her shipping, both recent and old world. The HMS Victory and the Mary Rose are the most iconic of vessels, and aptly deserve preservation despite the ravages of time. Only the Cutty Sark is one that I've long curried a love of seeing, but Greenwich isn't really near Portsmouth. Thanks for sharing these lovely pieces of maritime history.
There used to be an outside lift on the Spinnaker tower but it jammed up just after it was installed. they look like they have taken the tracks down now.
11/28/2022 Hello Ship. Cool Video. You guys needed a good time off the boat. That thing will kill you if you do not enjoy each other alone sopewhere else. Good Job. DOn usa

It’s so cool , as a guy we absolutely love projects and you guys have the neatest project !!!
That was fantastic.. Love the history. Very entertaining (funny). Thanks guys..!
Victory is probably one of the best tourist attractions in the UK. It's an awesome ship and there's a real sense of awe when walking around inside.
There really is, it's such an amazing peice of history x

Isn't Pompey a great trip out? Thanks for bringing the memories back. We jumped on the hovercraft over to the isle of wight last time we were there.
The mary rose is so interesting and in slightly better condition than Surinda LOL only joking..
Good show!cheers!
Great video!👍👍
Love the voice over *BLEEP*
Absolutely amazing. So sad to think of 500 men going down with the Mary Rose. With a lower population, the scale of the tragedy must have been massive
That was BRILLIANT! I’ve got to go down there and have a look in person. 👍

What a boat the Victory, but to make it change direction with its little rudder, it had to take a lot in advance.
