    This videos been receiving a lot more views lately and I’d just like to say that I know there are one or two spelling mistakes and some information is incorrect such as how the drivers are paid, and the risk of the boiler exploding is a bit extreme. I made this video a long time ago and didn’t notice the mistakes.
    Thanks for watching.

      I didn't notice the spelling mistakes but the bit about the boiler exploding certainly wasn't true. He jumped clear so as not to get crushed between the loco and tender, thankfully there was never any fear of an explosion.

    This wasn't the one where a stupid driver crossed the level crossing causing the train to derail and tip over killing the driver back in about 1997 ISH. The driver at the time had just left his job in London for his dream job driving the loco,s on the rhdr. His name was Kevin. A genuine great guy who is still thought about and missed by his friends back in South East London.

      Yes. I believe a female driver died only a year or so later for exactly the same reason. I asked the station master at Romney Sands while I was waiting for the train, basically about their use of automatic barriers since then. I wish they had the same efficient timing of the barriers that they do on the RH&DR than the national rail network who seem to be ridiculously over-cautious.

    When a miniture train like this derails, only a moron doesn't jump clear. Because if the tender and engine were to get pushed together at any point during the crash, that cab roof could be forcably shoved right THROUGH your body. From what I heard, that's what happened on the previous, and fatal accident where they have the mamorial to the driver and had to put actual barriers on the level crossing. An accident that would have still been relatively fresh in the mind of the driver when this happened, because the engine involved had only recently returned to active duty.

      In my part of the world, a steam train was running a charter, a semi truck crossed the tracks without giving way to the train (unprotected crossing with either give way or stop signs). The train hit the truck and 2 of the driver, fireman and 3rd person in the cab died with the tender crushing them and the boiler bursting into the cab I believe

    • @martinsims1273
      @martinsims1273 2 года назад

      If it's a properly built boiler, in proper working condition, then unless it's been seriously damaged, it's very unlikely to explode. Apart from impact damage, there is a risk that when the boiler unit is tilted to any large degree away from it's normal position, the inner firebox may become uncovered (it's normally completely covered by water, which will not allow the innermost firebox sheets/plates to get hotter than boiling water). If the plates of the inner firebox become uncovered, they will then become as hot as the fire, so softening/weakening the metal, and causing an explosion. There is normally a "fusible plug" safety device to help prevent such a situation happening but being fitted at the top of the inner firebox, this only works when the boiler is upright, and the boiler water level is neglected, and gets too low but will not work if the boiler/firebox is (for example) on it's side, so that the top of the firebox is still covered with water, but the side becomes uncovered.

    • @JohnSmith-vi5pz
      @JohnSmith-vi5pz 2 года назад

      @@martinsims1273 Well to a point. If, say, the side of the firebox becomes dry due to the overturn, then it will quickly heat to red hot, weaken and collapse. That'll kill you if you're on the footplate.

      Ah, I see now. My theory was right, blind and deaf as a stone. Didn't see, didn't hear, yada yada yada. But, was it the first time he parked on the tracks, didn't he ever know that there is an operating train using the tracks? Didn't he hear a whistle? Didn't he know what vehicle blasts that whistle? Of course it's a fkn train!
      Like I said, drugs are the ruin of every sick bustards. He left the tractor on the tracks and couldn't wait to sit and score, snort or neddle drugs. A sane person would in no way have left a tractor on the tracks. With a train approaching, chugging noise, whistling repeatedly and... where was the tractor driver? Into the bushes smoking that smelly marijuana. What a sick society we have these days.
      And the train driver? If he saw the tractor and.... instead of stopping to avert a collision, he decides to blast the whistle and continue on.
      Man, I feel for the passengers, for these drivers are the blame for endangering and hurting them.
      How are they ever allowed to drive without competency and training, to know the basics of operating a train or tractor. Have they ever been told what to do if, if, if... oh never mind, every fkn dog has his day. 🙄

    Unfortunately this railway has a poor safety record due to the number of incidents recorded, 22 according to Wikipedia. I believe the main issues are the level crossings, which despite having barriers, sounds and warning lights, people or vehicles have been in collisions with the trains. I remember one incident where a train driver lost his life as a result of a collision. It's all really unfortunate as the railway and trains are a delight to travel on. I have enjoyed rides on it myself, and would not hesitate to do so again. It's a really lovely little railway.

If it was on it's side, the firebox crown (and fusible plug) would still be under water, so the lead in the plug would not melt, but the side of the inner firebox would be uncovered, so heating up excessively, to the point of softening, resulting in an explosion, because the pressure, although below the blowing off pressure of the safety valves, would still be above the pressure which the overheated, weakened firebox plates could stand.

      The thing is to drop (remove) the fire p.d.q. before it has enough time to overheat and soften the uncovered plates.

      @@martinsims1273 wrong......the safety valves would have lifted. The fire had lost its draught and was natural dying at that point.
      Every traction engine going down hill exposes its crown and its boiler is at full effort. That boiler on its side and no blower or exhaust blast the fire has no oxygen to maintain the fire.

    Looking at the state of the track I'm surprised there aren't a lot more derailments. You wouldn't get me on there. I've seen other videos and the rolling stock is bouncing around all over the place.

    A Dreadful Accident!

  • @mickcarson8504
    @mickcarson8504 2 года назад +2

    Of course this was an accident waiting to happen, partly on carelessness of humans.
    First of all (careless one), what was a tractor doing on the rail track to have caused the locomotive to impact with it?
    Secondly (careless two), look at the left rail track at 0:07, a humpy and distorted track. Who is at fault here?🤔
    Look at this example on the state of the rail tracks. The train keeps on rolling on bad tracks, until it will slips as it sways and nudges sideways and then derails and, you guess the rest. A serious accident waiting to happen.
    ruclips.net/video/9X2A2f6E5DI/видео.html
    The same in this video. Wasn't it time they flattened and straightened those track and not wait for a possible scenario where the train could derail when running on a distorted track and a slight impact with... in this case, a tractor, could push the train wheels sideways and slip off then veer out of the tracks?
    See what happens when track maintenance and service is past its dues? 'She's alright', says Bill, 'She's alright says Ron. But, if the train could talk, he'd say 'No, it's not alright. Fix my tracks'. 😡
    Again, what was the tractor driver doing? Was he asleep, gone deaf, gone senile, into drugs, etc. Surely it's not a first the idiot has been there and not knowing that he is approaching a rail track/crossing, he would have heard the train horn or the sound of chugging steam that is heard up to half a kilometer away, or seen exhaust steam billowing in the distance, etc.
    What was the train driver and his coaler doing while steaming on? Was it the first time he's been on that track not to know that it has blind spots that are difficult to see traffic and people, was it?
    Remember, from what I've said here, it takes two to Tango and both the tractor and train drivers are equally responsible for causing the crash and injuring people, all because of a 'She's all right, mate' attitude, leaving or ignoring things for too long until Karma steps in and... Kaboom!! Kiss my a**.
    Both should cop a minimal 5 years of jail.
    Let's see if they will ignore what is due in maintenance in future. This should have not happened if the tracks were well kept and straight.
    Damaging property is one thing, but putting passengers at risk of being hurt, or killed, is a very serious offence. Nobody wants to enjoy a ride into death.
    And that tractor could have been observed cheating death a few times in the past and nobody did anything about reporting it.
    So, we have a derailed train, a tractor unseen and 50 shaken and injuried passengers. Plus, the work to fix the track and train. What a mess in my opinion, how do people ever become responsible or get jobs when they hardly give a damn? 🙄

      The tractor driver was entirely at fault for causing this accident. Despite the driver of the locomotive sounding the whistle unfortunately the driver of the tractor didn't hear or see the train and started to proceed onto the occupation crossing. The driver of the locomotive had already applied the brakes before impact and jumped clear to avoid being crushed between the loco and tender. There is nothing wrong with the condition of the rails, a telephoto lense can give the impression of distortions which aren't actually there.
