That´s what i was thinking, had the pilot been picked up, we would have seen the characters developed to be super nice and dependent on each other on the island to survive, over the series run.
The problem with that is that unlikable characters and still need it a positive trait to balance them out. Like the difference between “I can fix him” and “They’re no good for you.”
I'd do unholy things for 3 Dog Band to have become its own series. The art direction is just so fucking amazing, the character designs are just *chefs kiss*
The history of this pilot showcase and shorts presented always fascinated me. And while I’m glad we eventually got GOAT cartoons like Regular Show and Uncle Grandpa out of them, the fact that some of them still got ignored make me sad. 3 Dog Band man! The ONE time my man Paul Rudish got to make a funny cartoon with original characters by himself (on his home turf for CN) and it got shelved. I’ve wanted to see an original cartoon idea from this man ever since I discovered who he was with his work on Dexter’s Lab, Star Wars Clone Wars 2003 & Samurai Jack as an Art Director and storyboard artist respectively. While I’m sure he didn’t mind helping his his Hanna-Barbera peers out with their own projects, I always thought Rudish was under Tartakovsky’s and McCracken’s shadows and was waiting for the one day CN would give him the chance to produce his own cartoon. I know he would eventually go on to awesome things. Like co-create the amazing but criminally short-lived Sym-Biotic Titan series with Genndy and Bryan Andrews. And then he would go onto to go hog wild and develop the awesome and universally praised Mickey Mouse shorts from 2013, but even with all that success, I still wouldn’t mind seeing another original idea from him. His design skills and individual sense of humor deserve it. 👍 Only time will tell…
The regular show pilot was the best of the bunch. In some of these, it was just about 2 guys. In Regular Show, there was a whole ensemble. It also had the most flexible premise because lots of things could happen at a park.
fun fact: around 2017-2018 my cable on direct tv went out but I found my package allowed me to watch extras from cartoon network and it was every single one of these pilots
It's a real shame this is such a swept-under-the-rug part of Cartoon Network's history; most of these pilots look so charming and quirky, not to mention all the amazing talent on board. Thank you for introducing me to these; I never actually knew about most of them.
I feel the same way about Uncle Grandpa tbh. I feel the actual show worked better as shorts than a full on 11 minute show, and considering those 11 minutes kinda consisted of an Animaniacs style variety I think Peter Browngardt knew that the style he went with in the series would wear thin if it only focused on UG and his friends. But the show has a cult following and for good reason, so I'm not one to judge too much. Also why does the platypus in The Awesome Chronicles have the same colors as Perry? Is teal just a standard color for cartoon platypuses?
I've always heard that Joey to the World was a mistake. The guy didn't know they were supposed to be pilots for kids' shows. Dunno if that's true or not, considering it seems odd they'd get to the point of finished pilot without someone saying something.
Danger Planet looks cool as hell, and i really love the protagonist, since it looks like a character i use a lot in Brawl Stars. Strange that Cartoon Network didn't make it into a full cartoon, i can already imagine how much people would have loved it and how it would turn in one of those "underrated cartoons you should absolutely watch" if it had 1 or more seasons and was showed on TV.
To be real, I honestly thought Cartoonstitute was a REAL school when I was in elementary school at the time. I was dead set on dropping out of my american trash school to go there, only to find out it was an Animation Program a year later.😅😅😅
Most of these pilots at the very least had a pretty cool concepts. Really wish 3 Dog Band got picked and Spleenstab definitely gave me Dave the Barbarian vibes and I’m all for that. Also, Sponge Out of Water was good but Sponge on the Run not so much.
3 Dog Band has so much late-90's-early-2000's style that I argue would make a pretty cool show had it come out earlier. I do agree with the art style being stuck in the past, that type of character design and animation is not future proof. I do believe that if they tried again nowadays with a more punchy animation pace (I don't know what you'd call it) they'd have a better chance of getting a dedicated fan base. Such a shame it never got picked up, though.
Totally forgot Regular show, uncle grandpa, and secret mountain force awesome came from this. Totally glad we got actual series from some of the pilots, but as someone who loves Chris Reccardi's work, would've died for Meddlen Meadows
Oh my god I did not expect this video!! I've been curious about the Cartoonstitute for a LONG while and seeing it being covered by you was not something I expected but then again made me so excited! Can't wait to watch!!
Fascinating stuff. I’m only just learning about 3 Dog Band from this video and I’m already gutted that we never got it. Thankfully we got Regular Show though.
I remember seeing a lot of the pilots I couldn’t stop watching Wonderful Wingits, Mushroom and the Forest of The World, Bottoms Bute and more, etc. I loved those pilots!
Yea I've been waiting on the new Shorts program they've announced a while back. I heard from the Creator of Mouthwash madness that short was finished in December of 2022, and in 2023 I heard another short entered production.
28:19 Honestly get Wander over yonder vibes from that cartoon not going to lie. So possible choice of potential reviver... Craig McCracken. Maybe with the whole series being in honor of the late creator of the pilot.
After watch this video, i hope the Cartoon Cartoons program become a reality, we need more shows like that to see what potentials cartoons could be made
the naive man from lolie land also aired on nicktoons network during their shorts program too. my guess was CN and nick were going to decide based on the winner of the nicktoons film festival.
I do love the concept of Spleenstab and wish it went to series, with some tweaks to give it more of a sustainable storyline. Except it makes me very disappointed we never got and will never will get a Groo the Wanderer cartoon series. Anyway, what makes the Regular Show pilot quaint in retrospect of the entire series is that it only really gets like 75% of what the show would become. And that's the lesson to take in here. Sure, the show started up about a couple goofballs in a dead end job, but what made the show really sing was the growing interpersonal relationships. First season, everyone basically hated Rigby and Mordecai and gave them a lot of crap, not undeserved, for being screw ups. Watching those episodes after the rest of the show again come off weird and almost a little mean spirited. But as the show went on, they went from slowly becoming friends that always had each other's back to a weird little work family. That's something no one could have predicted and absolute proof that a pilot opens the door for the concepts, but a show naturally grows and changes, sometimes even getting lore. So basically most of these pilots had that potential. And I loved Uncy Grampers BEFORE it was cool.
yeah but they might wanna change the name considering it’s for kids spleenstab doesn’t scream kid appropriate for those sensitive grown ups/adults who don’t get context
I want ALL of the GOOD completed rejected cartoon pilots to ACTUALLY get the greenlight and ALL of the GOOD unfinished rejected cartoon pilots to ACTUALLY be completed for a DIFFERENT Cartoon Network Shorts Project and ACTUALLY get the greenlight and become ACTUAL cartoon TV shows for Cartoon Network FOR REAL AND FOR GOOD ONE DAY!
3 dog band and le door definitely shouldn't have been made into actual shows I really love how quirky and nice the artstyle for those shows looked. I understand if you don't like le door but I sure do.
needlessly long comment incoming I haven't watched all these pilots, but here are my thoughts on the ones I've seen: -"regular show" and "uncle grandpa" of course, rly liked both of those. I love regular show and think uncle grandpa's alright, glad these 2 got picked up--didn't much care for secret mountain fort awesome tho -"maruined", aside from the art/animation I wasn't into this, mainly bc of the characters. I could see this being a one-off special maybe but not a whole series. feels like genndy was going for a reverse dexter and deedee w/ a snobby big sister and an obnoxious music-loving little brother but the characters are just kinda annoying and flat; the sister is literally just portia from the mighty b -"the borneos", bland. honestly if it wasn't explained to me this was abt the 1 normal kid in a family of circus freaks I'd have no idea bc the premise is not very well conveyed for a pilot. dig the art style tho... -"baloobaloob's fun park", meh. I like aaron springer's art/designs and kinda liked the characters ig but this pilot just felt like it should've had "more" going on. feel like it could've gone places if it went on tho, as I kinda like the dynamic of andy and jeff but needed more of it to be sold on them. I also like how andy's voice is literally just binky's from fairly odd parents, and jeff had like the same voice/general character zeke would have in billy dilley's super duper subterranean summer--also funny u mentioned andy and jeff might've needed a girl to round out their "positive guy & negative guy" dynamic as that was the case for billy dilley -"le door", actually quite enjoyed this one bc of the characters from le door, his relationship w/ frank and the rival ZE WINDOW. maybe would be good as shorts but idk abt a full show unless there was a lot of polishing. I didn't find it that funny/get that into the premise, I rlly just liked the characters. also what a coincidence le door gave me slight pepe le pew vibes as he was voiced by rene auberjonois, who voiced him in the looney tunes show -"3 dog band", rlly liked this one, esp love the song and could see it being a show. but who knows, maybe if we'd gotten it, then paul rudish wouldn't have gone on to make those mickey mouse shorts. so maybe it's for the best... -"danger planet", saw it a long time ago but barely remember it; I just know I wasn't as into it as everyone else. and idk if I'd want a whole show abt looking after a baby, there's a reason most cartoons restrict that premise to a single episode -"meddlen meadows", good but I sure hope a full show wouldn't have us stuck on the caveman planet bc I feel like that'd get boring; I like the idea of going to different worlds but the pilot's plot makes me think we wouldn't get much of that...RIP chris reccardi -"spleenstab", eh I thought it was fine but none of the characters grabbed me. and as said in the vid, idk how much mileage a show could get out of "violent barbarian tryna befriend peaceful elves"--the pilot even ends w/ the elves accepting spleenstab so would it just reset in the next one? lol also wish instead of that weird mickey mouse impression for twinkle's voice then jeff bennett had done like his happy jimmy voice from jimmy neutron but -"the awesome chronicles of manny & khan", thought it was ok but the plot was idk weirdly simple. you'd think a short centered on a german leprechaun and a giant platypus thing would be more...fantastical? do smth w/ the fact that it's a leprechaun and a platypus thing? if they were just regular dudes the pilot would be the same but oh well. but I liked their dynamic (even if it just felt like a less mean ren & stimpy, it's a tried and true formula) and thought the short was decently funny mostly due to keith ferguson's voice acting, man always does a great job "Joey to the world" also looks weirdly familiar to me so maybe I've seen it and just didn't remember. I liked 'Three Dog Band' the most because Paul Rudish brings alot of that charm, and energy that miss from Cartoon Network's glory days. It's A shame this never got picked up due to being made when 'Adventure Time' was about to hit, and nearly every cartoon had to have characters with noodle arms, and bean shaped mouthes. Similar to how every animated film is CG, and I long for A 2D animated film, but I guess I'm more nostalgic for a classical animation style these days.
YO THATS FUNNY I HAVENT SEEN U IN A LONG ASS TIME AND YOU COME BAXK WITH THIS! LOL, no negativity here man but it does.frustrate me, your title and overall thesis ues cartoon network picked almost objectively BAD pilots around this time, a lot of ahows also didnt pick up the slack, The departments were all in tizzies trying to figure out what currwnt kids watch. And they tried and did a bad job at THEIR pilot program. Im not done, but i swear you will have all my respect if you maybe mention ironically THE SAME NETWORKS SUCCESSFUL pilot program(S!) Theuve done it a few times for adult swim and one of those gave us rixk and fuxking morty. BY THE WAY. not to mention anothe slew of great and sometimes just weird as fuck shit that people for some reason wanna see its like the depravity of old school youtube or watching like more.animated worse filthy frank.... OH ANOTHER ONE BROUGHT US SUPERJAIL one of the greatest animations every one of them , continuously. So im just saying man, you wanna get the word out that THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST IDEAS A NETWORK CAN DO PERIOD, FOR THE PEOPLE???? ABSO-LUTELY!!! its all based on the viewer. You can also talk about one program that managed to lans on their face with it, i voted on this one.too btw even tho i had to be an adult by then not sure, but like when regular show adventure time(which o.g.s know just used to be an old.school possible 'meme' before that era, of this awesome little.cartoon, on the web, and some genius working there picked it up(the TLDR of course😂) But yeah nuaaaance man nuance things aint so b n w 😅heh✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️all love from canada my bro🇨🇦
I would have like to see 3 Dog Band get a series.
THATS THE ONE I VOTED ON IM ALMOST POSITIVE
Same dude
Me too!
I just want to see more Stavros lol, he looks like a cool dude
It could’ve made it big in 2008 or 2009…
I dunno, Stavros seems too uptight and persnickety.
Sly on the other paw, seems like a total riot to be with.
Now that Adult Swim is open to teen oriented shows, maybe some of these can make their way onto that.
I pray to God some of these pilots become ACTUAL shows.
Good idea
I always wonder if Maruined making the characters unlikeable was done on purpose so they can learn to develop better together.
Doubt Genndy was willing to stick to a project like this. I think this was just a one-off
I'd do unholy things for 3 Dog Band to have become its own series. The art direction is just so fucking amazing, the character designs are just *chefs kiss*

3 dog band and danger planet definitely should've been shows. Love the art direction on both.
Welcome Back HatsOffMedia ❤🎉
I saw most of these on demand on direct tv in like 2016. Didn’t know what they were for the most part but I loved them

Pilot version of Jenny was on some freaky timing
Oh my god I did not expect this video!! I've been curious about the Cartoonstitute for a LONG while and seeing it being covered by you was not something I expected but then again made me so excited! Can't wait to watch!!
I wish 3 Dog Band made a series (same goes for Yoink Of The Yukon and Ferret & Parrot).
just found your channel earlier this year, gotta say this is one of the most underrated channels on YT. keep up the great work, dude
Thanks, will do!
Danger Planet and 3 Dog Band were my faves. I also loved the Uncle Grandpa pilot. It's so different from the TV show.
Fascinating stuff. I’m only just learning about 3 Dog Band from this video and I’m already gutted that we never got it. Thankfully we got Regular Show though.

Wait, this is straight up doraemon. Man, what a bold move, somehow it works as a westernized version AND skirts copyright law.
Love the video, my favorites were 3 dog band, danger planet and of course regular show. I love watching these shorts from back in the day
Uncle Grandpa is actually funny
No it isn’t
@@kjs257incpen3 It's fine, reminds of old 2000s CN, like chowder, but i respect you're opinion!
@@Fatih_M177 Thanx
I’d love to see you talk about failed mondomedia pilots, because hell there are a lot of them
After watch this video, i hope the Cartoon Cartoons program become a reality, we need more shows like that to see what potentials cartoons could be made
the naive man from lolie land also aired on nicktoons network during their shorts program too. my guess was CN and nick were going to decide based on the winner of the nicktoons film festival.
Thanks for sharing all this awesomeness!
I’d love to see a kid-friendly version Rick and Morty created for Cartoon Network that’ll be pretty fun and exciting!
Spleenstab looks like a show I would have liked mostly because I really liked the Korgoth pilot on Adult Swim.
yeah but they might wanna change the name considering it’s for kids spleenstab doesn’t scream kid appropriate for those sensitive grown ups/adults who don’t get context
i can just picture it a karen calling cartoon network hq you have a show called spleen stab that you think is appropriate for younger audiences?
I feel like joey to the world fits the nick at night aesthetic more than anything. So charming, but also very un-cartoon network imo
Maybe the creator of the Danger Planet short should work on an animated series for Nickelodeon and Paramount+!
Three Dog Band and Melvin Meadows definitely should've gotten picked up. Those two had the potential to be great shows if given a full series.
I liked Billy Dilly so I think I'd have liked that other show too. And the background are in fact amazing

As you should
3 dog band and le door definitely shouldn't have been made into actual shows I really love how quirky and nice the artstyle for those shows looked.
I understand if you don't like le door but I sure do.
Most of them have interesting premises but I feel even if greenlit they would not last more than a single season.
The pilots that could’ve been.
So, there was a 2000's version of the "Cartoon Cartoon Show"??
I see your cxldr3 enjoyer as well
14:45 See Unicorn Warriors Eternal
Can't wait if they do redo it!! Love the vid!!
28:15 I was just listening to this ape escape song today when I was doing homework what a coincidence
You need to do MotorCity and Robotomy!
Sponge Out of Water is awesome and on par with the first movie. I agree about Sponge On the Run though.
It's on par with a mid season 3 episode, which is still high praise
Really? I have never heard people talk about
lotta midway music in this one
Okay I’m pretty sure The End was from Cow and Chicken or Courage. Something early 90’s CN but not 100% sure.
needlessly long comment incoming
I haven't watched all these pilots, but here are my thoughts on the ones I've seen:
-"regular show" and "uncle grandpa" of course, rly liked both of those. I love regular show and think uncle grandpa's alright, glad these 2 got picked up--didn't much care for secret mountain fort awesome tho
-"maruined", aside from the art/animation I wasn't into this, mainly bc of the characters. I could see this being a one-off special maybe but not a whole series. feels like genndy was going for a reverse dexter and deedee w/ a snobby big sister and an obnoxious music-loving little brother but the characters are just kinda annoying and flat; the sister is literally just portia from the mighty b
-"the borneos", bland. honestly if it wasn't explained to me this was abt the 1 normal kid in a family of circus freaks I'd have no idea bc the premise is not very well conveyed for a pilot. dig the art style tho...
I also like how andy's voice is literally just binky's from fairly odd parents, and jeff had like the same voice/general character zeke would have in billy dilley's super duper subterranean summer--also funny u mentioned andy and jeff might've needed a girl to round out their "positive guy & negative guy" dynamic as that was the case for billy dilley
-"le door", actually quite enjoyed this one bc of the characters from le door, his relationship w/ frank and the rival ZE WINDOW. maybe would be good as shorts but idk abt a full show unless there was a lot of polishing. I didn't find it that funny/get that into the premise, I rlly just liked the characters. also what a coincidence le door gave me slight pepe le pew vibes as he was voiced by rene auberjonois, who voiced him in the looney tunes show
-"3 dog band", rlly liked this one, esp love the song and could see it being a show. but who knows, maybe if we'd gotten it, then paul rudish wouldn't have gone on to make those mickey mouse shorts. so maybe it's for the best...
-"danger planet", saw it a long time ago but barely remember it; I just know I wasn't as into it as everyone else. and idk if I'd want a whole show abt looking after a baby, there's a reason most cartoons restrict that premise to a single episode
-"meddlen meadows", good but I sure hope a full show wouldn't have us stuck on the caveman planet bc I feel like that'd get boring; I like the idea of going to different worlds but the pilot's plot makes me think we wouldn't get much of that...RIP chris reccardi
-"spleenstab", eh I thought it was fine but none of the characters grabbed me. and as said in the vid, idk how much mileage a show could get out of "violent barbarian tryna befriend peaceful elves"--the pilot even ends w/ the elves accepting spleenstab so would it just reset in the next one? lol also wish instead of that weird mickey mouse impression for twinkle's voice then jeff bennett had done like his happy jimmy voice from jimmy neutron but
-"the awesome chronicles of manny & khan", thought it was ok but the plot was idk weirdly simple. you'd think a short centered on a german leprechaun and a giant platypus thing would be more...fantastical? do smth w/ the fact that it's a leprechaun and a platypus thing? if they were just regular dudes the pilot would be the same but oh well. but I liked their dynamic (even if it just felt like a less mean ren & stimpy, it's a tried and true formula) and thought the short was decently funny mostly due to keith ferguson's voice acting, man always does a great job
"Joey to the world" also looks weirdly familiar to me so maybe I've seen it and just didn't remember.
EDIT: (re)watched it and yeah I liked it but partly due to the ending it's maybe funnier as a one-off. also reminded me a bit too much of rocko's modern life.
perhaps I'll watch more at some point...
I think it'd be cool for u to go thru more of these cartoon pilot projects, like where we got steven universe, clarence and OK KO from. I was waiting for back to backspace, paranormal roommates or twelve forever here but ig those were from different projects...
What is the katakana on your hats off banner *trying* to say. Sorry, unrelated to the video, but it was bugging me
Maruined is the worst thing Gennedy every made, and I'm a huge Gennedy fanboy
hot take: I do like mordecai's original design, its more appealing and expressive.

Uncle Grandpa sucks. Pizza Steve and Mr. Gus carry the show. It has its moments but most of the time it's not very funny. It's just randomness.
