Aang was an idealist and deeply believed in the sanctity of all life. He, like Batman, was not above absolutely *decimating* average goons. Those poor guys in the ladders. 😅
I love that Zuko bothers doing a little flourish the swords just for flair’s sake before rescuing Aang. You just know he did a little smile when he realised he’d need to avoid firebending and he finally had an excuse to flex his sword skills.
I love this scene, Aang sees that someone, _anyone_ is trying to rescue him and he just trusts him, “stay close to me”, “jump on my back” “hand me the next one” pure unfettered teamwork and Zuko blindly trusts him as well, bc he sort of doesn’t have a choice in this situation. It was so cool to see what became foreshadowing of the two of them working together and what they could accomplish if they did. Also, love the part where they almost get away, fire is going to be used and Aang flips Zuko around to protect him with air. I wonder if Zuko ever thinks about that. I also like that Aang thought all life was sacred, and he knew if he left Zuko there, he’d probably get in trouble or be killed.
It’s interesting to note that Zuko as the blue spirit does not use any bending just his swords and martial skills. He is almost better and more effective then when he uses his bending.
Imagine if the fire lord recognized that talent and put it to use! Zuko regularly assassinating Earth Nation and water tribe generals and powerful benders. He could have been a great asset to both the fire nation.
He’s pretty badass with those swords tbh. I think, and I could be wrong, that he decided not to bend with those swords because he didn’t want to give Zhao suspicions that the Blue Spirit was him
He never once used bending while taking the role of the Blue Spirit to keep the identity hidden. Not just with Zhao, he also mainly used this principle when Jet attacked him in Ba Sing Se while both Zuko and Iroh turned an old tea shop into a booming success.

He probably thought Aang would run off once he figured out it was Zuko. That if nothing else he could grab Zuko and say he's a traitor to Ozai for freeing the Avatar.
What i love about this besides the usual amazing choreography and soundtrack is eventhough they fail, the firenation army here still looks compotent but were simply overpowered and outclassed
It is kinda funny tho that this is seemingly the only time the Fire Nation use spears which helps Aang get a lead on escaping. Not to mention the ladder things going up the wall. There is a level of genius tho with how well-crafted the scene is.
When Avatar came out I mentally wrote it off as "some lame fake anime," but one day while channel flipping, I caught this scene, and it _instantly_ reversed my opinion and sold me on the show.

Yeah in the live-action Netflix version they hit to that they say he's a different person with the mask on and I'm like that's right he is
Even Iroh (who was the narrator) states the mask can be the true self; meaning Zuko is shown who he really is as the Blue Spirit.
