This game was seriously a masterpiece. Like, the space environment is perfectly simulated. You can even fucking interact with the floating guns and magazines!
Either the enemy sees that you're firing on them and they're forced into cover or they DON'T see you firing on them in which case they get shot. Either way a little coordinated suppressive fire is going to be effective.
These rods are bunker busters. They're designed to perform precision fire onto enforced structures embedded within the ground, such as those that are meant to withstand a nuclear strike. The big explosions you see here in this game are a bit of an exaggeration.

That 2d LT has got to be the best butter bar in military history. I'm a veteran and we call 2d LTs Butter Bar because their insignia looks like a legit bar of butter and they're usually not so brilliant/wise in combat with knowledge equivalent to a Pvt and PFC in the military irl.

PEOPLE CANNOT HEAR THE GUN SHOTS FIRED BY OTHER PEOPLE (those who have NO BODILY CONTACT with them) Sound permeates through the vibration of some medium (on the ground of the earth it is air), but in the orbit of the space station there exists hardly any air, meaning people cannot hear any sound except for the noise of their OWN firearms (these sounds permeate through the firearm and the shooter's body, without the need for air as a medium. Other scenes that seem unreasonable * it is very possible to attach heavily armor to people's space vests given that the repulsive motor is strong enough to power the weight of a soldier. Recoil doesn't push the astranouts backwards because physics doesn't exist in space.
Jetpack could be set up to receive instructions from the gun to offset recoil, but no way to know if that's what they're officially doing in universe.
