Not sure how RUclips managed to recommend this video to me, but that is my (remixed) model! Glad it helped you out. I ended up buying some oversized bolts that I cut down to be able to fully bolt it together, but your way is easier. 🙂

I don’t think the central bolts really matter all that much once it’s in the rack it’s not going anywhere.

I found this video and comment in preparing to print the same model. I'm new to printing and unclear on print settings for this model. Do I need supports? I'm concerned about the overhangs at the top if I don't put in supports. If it matters I can print in either pla+ or petg. Using a FLSUN v400 today, but will be getting an X1c soon. If nothing else, thank you for making and publishing this model. Hoping to post a make and more thanks soon ;)
@@JoshLloyd You should be ok without supports on an X1C. I don’t have experience on an FLSUN to know for that printer.

I heard you talk about those dell refurbs on Self-Hosted, jumped straight on the site and bought myself a pair, as well. March 14, 2023 according to my cc records. They were on a great steal of a deal, clearance almost 50% off the existing refurb price. Also have HA on one, as my upgrade path from the Pi 3b I'm currently on. Makes actually using my security camera feeds in HA possible.
Really was a steal at $138 each shipped.
Incredible to see you have a dedicated machine for everything. I only run a Aliexpress N5105 passively cooled machine with 4 2.5G Nic's that hosts OPNSense and all network related applications and one HP 800 G4 micro with i5 7500t 32Gb that runs proxmox with 10 LXC containers and 4 VM's including Home Assistant, TrueNas (with external DAS), Frigate (4 Cameras and internal TPU) and Nextcloud and it is only at about 30% constant CPU utilization. I think I have to give Home Assistant more power though with the local voice processing now. Btw. I started listening to your podcast a few months back. Great content.
Great content! I'd love to see more "functional" 3d printed stuff for the homelab/house! I feel like when i finally get my hands on one it will be a similar situation!
The desire to make functional stuff never stops! It’s quite hard to find projects that utilize printing as well as this one but when you do it’s a really fun way to justify the cost (kinda)!

The 0.1 volt does make a difference, I can't speak for Raspberry Pi, however where I chat mod on Twitch, for a truck driver, we recently swapped a LiveU Solo streaming encoder which was slowing dying for a Jetson Nano. We power it with a large power bank, and were saw regular under volt warnings, Belabox (the streaming encoder software) stats were telling us that it was receiving around 4.8v (despite the power bank claiming it will do 5v), we have got several other devices, including Sony action cams plugged in too, so maybe that lowered the overall voltage output, anyway we borrowed a power bank and saw 5.01v being reported, we're now using a smaller dedicated power bank just for the Jetson and that's giving a steady 4.9v, so definitely in our experience 0.1v can be enough to cure under voltage issues. Glad you find a Pi plug and it solved it, the newer low power SBC are power sensitive for sure.
Also I love how 3D printing in being used practically for server/homelabbing, the SSF Dells look so good rack mounted.
Cheap USB cables can cause volt drop, make sure you have a cable that is a decent AWG and not too long.
Screw = goes through one or more parts, set into the part underneath.
Bolt = goes through the parts, secured with nuts.

Ayyy, i just finished printing my selfdesigned Fujitsu S740 rackmount with a 5,25 inch bay for one 3.5 inch HDD :)
Will probably put it up on Printables and Makerworld soon.

Alex, great use of 3D printing for your homelab. Just gotta rotate those Dell logos 90 degrees now. One of the earliest things that I modeled and printed was additional tooless hdd clips for my unraid server case so i could add all 6 drives without screws. Works great especially since you can't easily buy them from the case manufacturer.

Lovely setup you got going there. I recently started my homelab with a couple of HP Gen8 Microservers. So usefull to have iLO available. Later gota first version Gen10 and was bummed to see they dropped the iLO for that... I got a couple of PiKVMs lying around thou, so watching this video you got me wondering how are you powering on the 1L Dells using the GPIO on the PiKVM? Could me my untrained eye but i didnt see any ATX connectors in them? (The HP Gen10 also doesnt have ATX pins on the MB)
If I could I would take the two cases and do a dovetail joint to join them, that way you wouldn't need to mess with finicky screws and angle drills.

Hah, nice idea for dell rack. I have the same machines (x3) and 1 intel nuc, and was thinking of a similar solution, but for rack I plan on using Ikea Lack 😀. Now, I can show this video to my wife to approve purchase of the 3d printer 😀

Yes! Love it! I’ve been looking at getting a printer and one of the uses I would want explore is printing stuff for the home lab. Was looking at getting, or building, a suitable box and then buying a SAS 12G backplane. Using 3D printed parts build it up with the backplane in the bottom and HDD slide down friction mounts like the 45 drives server cases. Will it be cheaper than a generic Chinese 24 bay hot swap case? No… 😂 Will it be more fun? Hopefully… 😅
had the same problem with my raspberry's with undervoltage even with some buck converters, once I switched to the official psu's the warning went
"Never mind my lego delorean." Proceeds to give us a 360 view with specs lol.
It uses a handshake to determine the voltage required and pies often. Do not give the correct handshake right away.
You know those Dell badges rotate...😉

Great video, just made me open up my Optiplex 3040 in the hope of finding an m.2 slot (that I knew wasn’t there) 😂 so frustrating, it only has the traces for it and the screw. Gonna have to upgrade it now. Also which 3D printer would you recommend for a first timer?
A bambu. Any of them will be perfect for a first timer!
Undervoltage is a real problem. I have a Pi, and it only likes the power supply that came with it. I use anything else, and it complains of under voltage.
The difference on the adapters are actually part of a known issue with Pi 4's and Power Delivery, if I remember right they are missing a fuse so PD negotiates wrong.
Wasn’t that only on the early ones? This is an 8gb pi4 so I thought it was fixed by then? Maybe I’m wrongn
I also have the hardest time remembering what the HA commands are! I should really write them down somewhere 😂

According to my slicer approx $6.50 in filament and a 17h print time.
