I just want to personally thank you for sharing with Scotland 🏴 how Scottish Americans have preserved the many ways of our heritage. I was met with lots of hostility in TikTok for saying my family came here from Scotland. I was told there is no way to know that because there are no records- I do not think a lot of people in Scotland understand that america kept very good records of all people who came here and where they were originally from. I live in North Carolina and I’m very proud to have hailed from Scotland so long ago. 💜
Family came over in 1899 after hitting three ports of call between Ireland, Scotland and England. My grandfather's parents passed soon after arriving, and the 4 kids (Grandpa Henry born on the boat) were split up in the orphanage system at the time. Dad discovered surviving family in the 1950's. We have records of arrival, and that's about it. Everything prior to arrival is conjecture.
TikTok is garbage anyway. A DNA test proved my Scottish heritage. My family also kept meticulous records of births deaths and marriages. I'm proud of it and I'm glad you are too 🙂
I wonder what they could mean by "no records"? There are lots of records to research. I found plenty of information on my family from where they came from originaly in Scotland to where and when they settled in America. And where many of them are in present day. It wasn't easy, but it's there.
Exactly so.
We can trace our family all the back to a retainer of the Red Comyn (which ancestor was present at Greyfriars). You can find many, many other families whom have kept similarly detailed records.

I think people react that way because THEY are/were to lazy to do the work of finding all the familial connections btwn Scotland and America… but then most people want the info “spoon fed” to them.
"I refuse to watch my country be torn apart." That's powerful. I thoroughly enjoyed this. And the "NoAssAtAll" Syndrome is hilarious! 😂
Rocky here... Don't know if you heard my voice crack at the beginning of that statement in the video, but yes, the emotion is real. That's one reason we love Shaun so much. He's as uplifting and positive as they come!
@USA Kilts & Celtic Traditions I'm right there with you Rocky. To see what's happening to the country I served is heart breaking.
Also it can be called “frog butt”.
@@USAKiltsOfficialSo cool! Giving you a subscribe!!
Shaun!!!!! I'm new here! I'm from a small Scottish Irish town in New Jersey, just outside NYC called Kearny. I live in South Jersey now just outside of Philadelphia. I was starting my research for my trip to Glascow ( my grandmother is from there) and Edinburgh (my grandfather is from there) and found you, just outside of Philly!! Funny enough, I have been researching kilts for my kids because the kilt store in my hometown has since closed! You hit two birds with one stone. I'm going to bing watch your channel today! So, exciting!
Glasgow: Its not a skirt, it's a kilt!
San Francisco: It's not a kilt, it's a skirt!
Being on pain meds for back pain due to ruptured disc😖this comment made me🤣LOL so hard!! 🤣😹. Thanks I needed that!! 😎 ✌🏻
Americans are proud of the people we come from. So different if all your people are still at home ... having no longing for someplace else. My various Scottish ancestors mostly came across The Pond in the 18th century, and I love every one of them. The common clansmen most of all.
I'm a half-Japanese guy from South San Diego and I was a drummer for years in a completive Scottish pipe band based in that city. I'd say Scottish culture is well represented in the US.
My grandparents came to the US from Scotland (Aberdeen and Inverness) and we grew up with this idea that being Scottish was really cool. Not that my grandparents actually told us that, but they were definitely Scottish and definitely cool to me. Thanks to the Scottish history and the Clan system, as you learn about your personal ancestry, there is a lot to learn about the history of the clan your family may have been associated with hundreds of years ago. This also can give you a feeling of community with other people who have traced their ancestry back to the same clans. It's fun to learn about and gives you a sense of pride.
Hey I'm a Martin also . My ancestors came from Scotland so Hello Cuz lol.
I'm very proud of my Scottish and Irish ancestry and proudly sport my kilts regularly for myself and my Scottish friends and channel followers.
Glad you're enjoying your extended stay in America Shaun.
Indeed. My dad's side came from Irland, and my mom's side came from Scotland. I even have the paper trail to confirm it. I tend to favor the Scottish side. I've been thee twice and absolutely loved it.
Shaun looking good in that new kilt!!!🙌🏼
My ancestors were Scottish Covenantors, murdered and deported to Ireland by the English. They made their way to the colonies and fought in the Revolution. In a very real sense, there wouldn't be a United States without the Scots.
I am beyond impressed with the store and owner. And I can see how much effort he has put into the research and craftsmanship put into the product’s carried.
Respectfully I’m asking for the women. It would be really cool to see what the women were dressed in.
Awesome interview.👍
Thanks for the kind words! 🙂
It wasn’t hard to say. 😊
@@lori3978 Women don't wear kilts, what they wear is a kilted skirt.
This was so fun, I felt like we were actually tagging along 😹
2% Scottish I am. A bit of a surprise. 98% Irish. 100% American. 💕 to all.
As a native Philadelphia resident I think if you are in old city or the historic district you'll get excited reactions or none at all. I'd like to see if I'm right. I hope I am. 😅💙
I have one great-grandmother who was Scottish - everyone else haled from Italy- the emigration history and preserving roots have been very important to my family :)
My youngest son has been wearing kilts for about 6 years now. There is a high school here that has their mascot as a Highlander and their school band wears kilts.
This is so awesome tried to find our kilt plaids several years ago during a festival in Salem Virginia. Wasn't fruitful the people I spoke with didn't seem so positive with discovery of our heritage families. Hopefully Shaun there's a chance to learn here 😀
My ancestors came to Pennsylvania in the 1850s on my dad's side from Cork Ireland, I'm half Irish with a touch of British and Welsh. Growing up in the Philadelphia area there were a lot of Irish and Scottish. I remember all the kids with red hair in grade school in the 1960s.
Our family is from Cork as well! The Armstrong Clan! The Rileys too
The Welsh are British and so are the Scot’s
@@anniebalsbaugh2093 Murphys and others. Maybe we're related. My great great grandfather was from Cork and then when he came to Pennsylvania he went into the civil war.
Jeff, we don't all have red hair, my my Bell family all have blue or green eyes and all Rh O- blood type generally dark hair. Not so much Viking.
This was a great video! So informative. This is a very nice store. Love the books and bookshelves! Thanks for taking us along! I really enjoyed it! Hope you and Teka have a great week ahead and God bless!
While your in Penssylvania, it would be interesting to see the Amish react to your Kilt.
The Amish generally ask that people not film them.
Lol that would get them wondering him 🤣 😂
Most great Scots fled . Many are in America since 1900. My great Grandmother immigration. Hello from the real Clan McGregor .
Part of my heritage is based on Scottish relatives who settled in the Maritimes hundreds of years ago.
It always enjoy watching your videos! You have such a great talent with how they are made! Thanks for taking the time in learning about Americans with Scottish ancestry.I’ve researched my maiden name Gillespie line stoping at 8 generations with proper documentation & my mom’s Campbell side 7 generations. I appreciate all you do! Cheers from Austin, Texas🎉
PREACH!! Sean’s videos are ALWAYS well done.
I love those belt buckles or whatever they really are at the beginning of this video. Just beautiful, Shaun.👍👍
Ooooo & I really like those leather belts also!!! ✌🏻
My first kilt was let out two pleats before I bought the second one. Ordered the first one in the Bruce (ancient) tartan from a store in Alexandria, Virgnia, whose name I forget. They had it made for me by someone in Strathmore. Bought the second one (Bruce, modern) from Chisolm's in Inverness. That one still fits me. ;-)
I love Rocky’s patriotism for the US! That integrated with his love for Scottish/Celtic culture is endearing! God Bless the USA!!
Please remember, The Outlander book series began in 1990's. Some of us still read books too!
Shaun
I’m an OG and I’ve got to say this is one of your best videos.!!
You’ve become so natural and relaxed on camera and grown into a wonderful presenter.!!
Noassatall disease. My husband has that. 😉
Something so beautiful about a man in a kilt. ❤️
Where do you find your family’s tartan color/pattern?
Everyone I've known that had a bit of Scot in their family had a book of tartans in their home. I once saw the tartan of my grandfather's family and was very disappointed. It was not a pretty tartan. I think the yarns were dyed with natural dyes. So not as bright colored.
This was very informative. I am looking forward to this series!
Grew up in a western American town whose only high school had the Highlander as its mascot.
Shaun, I've been to Scotland a lot and I've noticed a lot of men wearing kilts and Ray Bans, so it's kind of fun to see you kitted out (looks great by the way) and wearing your Wayfarers. USA kilts has a really good search engine to find your clan's tartan and they do good, heaier weight wool. So, it's fantastic to see you collaborating with them here in US.
Love it, your desire is to get behind something that everyone can desire!
That’s what makes America great!
The beard looks good for you
Looking gooooood.
Doesn't the sporran bouncing around cause..bruises? Seriously tho, the kilts with the suit jackets and waistcoat is amazing, somehow a perfect match.
You look good
Shaun, just so you know. USA Kilts is my supplier. I have bought some 14 kilts plus accessories from them. They are fantastic. Can't beat their customer service. Thanks for this and your other videos you shot and for those Rocky posted on the USA Kilts channel!
I was married while me and all my groomsmen were wearing kilts. Possibly the best celebration and party ever. Everyone loved the kilts.
My niece married a Barnhouse . They live in Ohio. Do you have any relatives there?
@@deborahscalise3215 Bery distant I believe
My father’s ancestors came to the US from southwest Scotland in 1700, originally to Pennsylvania and later to the Piedmont of North Carolina.
I just want to say that Schottland is my TEAM for Rugby 🏴
I love this. When I was on the Royal Mile in Edinburg , I found a kilt store. Absolutely beautiful
@shaun if you two ever miss your Scottish sweets, tunnucks snowballs, caramel waffers, shortbread, digestives, stuff like this, do a map search for the closest "world market" and go to the food section. It's not a large store, it's all imported goods and it's very interesting. I used to get my gram her Scottish fix there. She teared up when I brought her Scottish sweets.
The Americans are really hot on heritage - I went to a cup-final (football/soccer) in St.Louis at the university-campus, I can't remember the tournament's name/title but it was pretty much u-17. In the programme, every player's heritage was listed, even the subs !
My middle name is Welsh from my third great Grandmother. My DNA results say 43% Scottish and 5% Irish. I didn’t grow up with any traditions nor did I know I was Scottish nor Irish. Although many of our surnames made me think my family was with Campbell, Moore, Faris just to name a few.
When I was in high school in the mid 1960’s kilts were very popular for girls to wear: I had 3 kilts!
My father’s ancestry he told me is Scotch, Irish, and Welsh.
My high school mascot was a Highlander the band wore kilts that were imported from Scotland so I wore a kilt for special occasions for almost 70 yesrs! Ramsey Tartan plaid.
Shaun, the guys at USA Kilts are super. I have had a pleasant change and lost weight. Rocky and the guys at USA Kilts will be making my next kilt. God bless, Rob
Excellent! If you need any help on measuring or choosing a tartan, just reach out. 🙂
@USA Kilts & Celtic Traditions Will do! This will be my second, first is too big!
My great-grandfather, although legally being a Bandfield was biologically a Ferguson because his biological parents were both Fergusons.
I'm an American whose DNA is 30% Scottish, 10% Welsh and 10% Irish. I've even dressed my border collie in one of my ancestors tartans.
As a Scot in the USA I pride myself once a year or when I feel like it. I like the attention and the questions.
Looks great Shaun! … I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to catch up with some of my favorite RUclips folks. Thanks for the notification … still dreaming of Scotland here! Looking forward to making the voyage … the blossoms & Aurora Borealis OMG … spectacular … happy trails to you and Teka while here in the states enjoying your many adventures. 🌸😘
Am a little surprised by the shop's location, though I am more familiar with Pennsylvania's Rhenish immigrant heritage, and admit complete ignorance of Scottish folk in PA, but hey, why not?!
You look fantastic in Highland gear!
I ever get the opportunity to have a kilt it'll have to be us Army tartan as that's the one i can claim association to, I would wear it with pride. My mother claimed Scottish ancestry but I can not prove it , I did serve my country
Pennsylvania is like the hotbed of Ulster/Scots!!! But while you were here Shaun, I hope that you had some Philly Cheesesteaks, and Shoofly Pie.
Congratulations with your missus, by the by. And thank you so much for showcasing the wonderful things in this nation. From a fan in Coastal Texas.
A lot of Americans like to claim ancestry based upon surname. My name is from the Glasgow region, but the guy that brought it to the colonies arrived in the 1710s. His descendants likely married Welsh, English, German, Irish, and other groups in the intervening centuries. On the one hand I want to have a connection to the past, but on the other I feel like it's so diluted over the years that there's no past to be claimed.
I do absolutely love Scotland, though. I've been all over the UK from Plymouth to Edinburgh, and I've never felt more at home there than in Edinburgh.
Having been a female in high school in the early 70's, when hemlines barely covered the hoohaw, I never understood why any guy would WANT to wear a kilt in the winter!
So handsome, the formality of it. The socks, the jacket. Very nice.
How did kilts come to be, @Shaun?
What a beautiful store and great customer service. That is nice of them to allow you to see the back of the house. This is a great video all around.
Thanks for sharing. I deem to discover my Scottish roots more. So much here intrigued me to go even more.
I'm curious About how hard is it to drive on the right side of the road after being use to doing on the left in the UK.
I watch a lot of British television and wonder how confused I'd be making a left at an Intersection where there is more than two lanes. I can see myself having a line of angry drivers lined up behind me as I drive at a snail's pace.
My son is in Endenberg Scotland with his girlfriend and I am going to buy himself a whole outfit too.
men are handsome in a kilt
My grandmother was a MacGregor
Cool rug you both are standing on. Love it!
Most people in the US are scottish or Irish or Ulster. My ancestors came here from Scotland and Ireland. My great grandfather was from Glasgow. I love learning about my heritage and am very proud of it! Laird is my surname. I've learned it was originally called McLeod. Interesting.... There are tons of Celtic things here in the US. I love the jewelry.
Pretty cool how this business owner actually said it. Its heart breaking watching our country being torn apart 💔 😢 its heartbreaking watching any country be ripped bcuz an over inflated old guy feels entitled. Yes I did go there concerning putin. Hugs shaun and thank you so much for sharing this 💖
Exactly Demented Joe Biden sucks
Thank you for the kind words. As a world, we need to focus more on our common ground.
Norse Viking…excellent choice
It’s nice to see you encouraging people to embrace their Scottish ancestry. So many people online seem to look down on those of us that are enthusiastic about our family’s history.
I personally knew my great grandmother who immigrated from Scotland as a toddler in 1881. My Mom stayed with her and her mother summers and would tell us stories that her great grandma told her about Scotland and their travel to the US. Heck, my grandma even stuffed her turkeys with haggis, so it’s always been a part of our family life.
I have 2 pieces of china, all that’s left from the set my great great grandmother brought from Scotland over 150 years ago. I have them proudly displayed.
5:52 Hank Hill syndrome
Love those two buckles!
I'm BRANDON DAVID GRAHAM of the CLAN GRAHAM BLOOD OF THE COMMACHE AND LINEAGE OF ROLLO THE VIKING DUKE OF NORMANDY SON OF TEXAS
Is it yer families tartan or wit ?
Having done homework on the Scots in my ancestry, I found that the two clans (opposite sides of the family) were ancient enemies. One clan got kicked out of Scotland for nighttime cattle rustling. The name of their newsletter? The Lantern. 😂
It's great that you were able to get together with @USAKilts. A great bunch and I've had two of my kilts made there as well as a lot of other items from them! Can't wait for the next series of videos you release. Great job and thank you.
We love the collabs with Shaun as well!
🤔🤔…. Shaun showing Scottish fashion in America. Interesting.
6:07 why did I laugh at the way he said "hairy sporns"? :-)
0:05 Tartan books and whisky...I love it 😐
Your musical background today, which I was raised thinking it as early American, is typical in the Appalachia and some of the Ozarks.
A very informative and nice interview about how America feels about how Scotland wears their kilts, etc. thank you, Shaun❤️👍
Just loved this!!! My Grandma was Native American & Scottish… maybe one day I will be bold & try a kilt. I also live across town from Dunedin Florida… a place you might want to visit some day 🥰
Lol! No-ass-atall disease love it 😂🤣
My great-grandfather came from Scotland to Nova Scotia, Canada. He was a MacDonald, and my mother remembered him speaking Gaelic. Her mother was a MacLeod. So the Scottish roots run deep.
I got a kilt from them for my highschool graduation the 2nd year they were at that location . 90$ for my Damascus Sgian Dubh.
Just curious when you will be posting the trip to Charleston and Savannah. And will it be on this channel or Shaun and Teka?
Hi, these videos will be released from May and right through summer time. Makes sense since they were shot in summer, to show them in summer too :)
I love the Norse/Celtic knot work!!
Interesting video Dude!
There's definitely a cross-section of American hetero women who really dig a man in a kilt. It's a thing! I know some American men who aren't necessarily of Celtic extraction who are big fans of the Utilikilt, especially here in Florida. Very cool to see your reactions to seeing an American presentation of kilt culture!
When my Ancestry came back, I was extremely surprised to find 46% Scottish with the remainder being English, Irish, Welsh, German, and Norwegian.
I knew a number of guys when I lived out west who wore hiking kilts.
Do you own a kilt with the clan that you are from ( ancestry) ?
I know of a dude who was asked by a woman about what he had on underneath his, and he bent over to show her. She made complaints afterwards.
My standard reply to that query is, "Why, the future of Scotland!"
I wonder what the stupid cow expected the guy to do?
I don't live far from Spring City and never seen this store. Welcome to Pennsylvania. Hope you enjoyed your stay!! 👍🏻👍🏻♥️🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸
We're right on 724 at Bridge Street (across from the big Wawa)
Come to Manchester CT for the best bagpipers in New England... Take you out to dinner at my favorite pub...
Cheers from this Ferguson/Hamilton gal... Bound for Scotland in June!!!
They may be a little more accommodating than some stores, what I still haven't posted all my old memories on this subject, but I'm surprised you took that black watch one out of circulation after getting mobbed by midgies at Culloden...
I would get three pair of hose in different colors and then still only wear one most the time.
Aalso, the blue in the American flag still comes from the blue in the English Union Jack flag, which is actually the blue from the Scottish flag, but Kennedy still more beloved than Buchanan, etc.
As a Metro Detroiter, I need to check out this site now.
