They should put no DEF system since they're unreliable and always cause problems. Add in the DPF and ridiculous amount of filters and it's a recipe for disaster. Companies who run vehicles like this can't afford down time yet that's what these modern diesels spend more time doing.
Not to mention all the carbon is created to create the def fluid and the plastic container and the box it comes in. Also more fuel is burned so is it actually reducing the carbon foot print in all reality? Probably not.
We ran an '03 Kodiak 4500 with the 8.1 outfitted with a 10ft dump body for hauling concrete, gravel, etc. The thing is damn near indestructible. Just took it off the road in December and cleaning it up for who ever buys it next.
One last thing, when my dad had his truck shop we can both weld and paint and would get those trucks in with bare frames and then fabricate and paint a bed for it to the customers specifications and sometimes we would just build them the way we wanted to and then put them up for sale and it was always fun to fabricate and paint the beds, we would get to take nothing and build it into something which was always fun and satisfying, we definitely built some really cool ones!
Quite a few years ago my dad had a 3500 Chevy Durumax to haul his 45 foot fifth wheel horse trailer and he sold it and got one of these 5500 Chevy Durumax trucks and even with a little less power it hauled much better due to a few thing like the gearing in the rear end and transmission as well as the frame plus the wheelbase and height and in my opinion the stiffer suspension helped too.

I was thinking the same, but you would have to either weigh the shit out of it, or do some serious work to the suspension to soften it up. Stock, this truck would rattle your brain out your bottom on a wash board road lol

Nice to actually see a new Chevy 4WD with solid axles across the board. Forget the Blazer! This truck could actually do some serious mudding with the right modifications.
These trucks have horrible ride quality, not even an air suspension seat. I dispise GM for not including a suspension seat. Definitely will consider other truck brands in the future.
I wish GM would have continued to use the cab from their van. Much more room, rocker panels that hide the chassis, door openings with an integrated step, flat floor, and access to the rear of the engine compartment from inside the cab. Plus I just like the look better than the pickup cab...
Van cab would look better. But my god...gmc van body and interior are absolutely low quality and plastic junk. I own a van at the moment. Omg. I can’t go three days without something falling off or apart. The basic driveline is reasonable. Stuff attached to driveline is junk.
People are saying this truck looks outdated, but that front end is the only front end from Chevy I've ever liked; and I really like it! It doesn't look outdated to me.
I'd love to see GM design the next Tahoe and Suburban with a nostalgic style, going back to the early fifties. Big good, separate fenders up front, flared fenders in the rear, and offer a 2500 and 3500HD with a dually option on the Suburban, with a tow rating of up to 40K. Oh, and make it a strong hybrid assist, with a minimum 300hp electric motor, with about 450 in torque. Just a crazy mind working.

nice one. the lower power numbers must be compression for the max payload. they used to do that with the gas variants for decades. Not many want "industrial" for their hot rods later on. I am glad they went for a standard for the category, to group with another common company.
The Kodiak returns! Great looking truck. Had an 08 5500 under a super C motorhome previously. It was a great chassis and powertrain, however it rode like hell, which was to be expected. The wheel cut on the front in a 2wd is way tighter than what the 4x4 axle allows, at least that's how it used to be.
I'm more of a RAM/Cummins guy but Chevy did something I've been wanting for years. They have finally put a hood that opens to the front and exposes the sides of the engine like tractor trailers. In the past, RAMS were always easier to work on under the hood being an inline cylinder design, making things less cramped. Fords and Chevys usually have to have the body removed to get to anything. I would actually consider this for that feature alone. Now, if they could get rid of the horrible 1000 series Allison and throw in an AISIN transmission.
@@charlesrodriguez7984 ; It’s notorious for over heating when under heavy loads. That’s why Chevy/GMC had their tow ratings significantly lower than Ford or RAM. What happens is people buy these 1000 series Allison transmissions and they think they can tow heavy and often because they see the other 2 brands doing it. Yes they will tow the weight, but it decreases the life of the transmission by a significant factor. That goes with any transmission that over heats. RAM’s Chrysler transmission is horrible too. People make the same mistake with the. They just aren’t built for it. But at least with RAM you could opt for the ASIN which is a beast. All that said, I believe Chevy/GMC started putting in the 2000 series now. That’s when we all saw their tow rating jump up to the level of the other big two brands. If I was buying a truck from the 1000 series years, my preference in order would be 1) ASIN , 2)TorqueShift, 3)Allison or Chrysler “not sure which one is worse. Current new models would be 1)ASIN/Allison 2000 “Not sure which is better”, 2)TorqueShift, 3)Chrysler.

GM took a 6500 and derated it to make a 5500 and 4500. Ford took there F350 made the rear of the chassis stronger and increased the GVWR. Next time you see a F550 take a look you can see where they welded a 550 chassis to a 350 chassis, its right behind the cab. also the engine they use barely fits under the hood, to do any major work on it, it takes 8 hours to remove the cab and 8 hours to put it back on, thats why GM did the tilt hood. As far as who built what on the truck, the chassis frame, axles, drive shaft and suspension have all been provided by international. The cab, cab interior, Duramax, and Alison (FYI this is not the Allison 1000, most will have the 1750 or the 2750) have all been provided by GM. The only thing that was a partnership was the hood and bumper. On a final note regardless of the truck that comes off the line Chevy badge or International they both come with the Duramax and Alison. international just does not have the the rights to so the Duramax branding so it wont appear on the truck. if you have questions feel free to hit me up, I have been to the plant where this truck is built.

The GCWRs are similar(35k) but the pickups are 8500lbs max and these trucks are +10k lbs before up fitting, 15k lbs for some. Most people don't understand that a trucks towing capacity is based a lot of factors. When you add 100lbs to your pickup bed you lose 1500 lbs of towing capacity. Tongue weight is payload, so add payload and lose you lose on towing capacity. My 19 F350 lariat has 3050lbs of payload that translates to a 20350lb towing(15% tongue/hitch weight). Add me, wife and four kids and the their crap(950lbs), now its a 2100lb payload. Now I have a max tow rating of 14000lbs. It's illegal and unsafe to exceed either of the GAWRs(5990lb front, 7280LB rear) or the GVWR(11500). If you are involved in a collision and are found to be over any of the legal weights you also lose your insurance coverage. Love seeing the guys that have f250/2500s with airbags hauling triple axle toy haulers. Way, way outside the legal capacity on those trucks.
@@guyconnell2250 Well if you want to tow 20k on a fifth wheel you need 4k payload capacity. Fifth wheel takes 20% tounge weight from the trailer. If you towing 16k then you need 3,200 payload. But like always keep your gear and occupants weight in mind also. That's why 2500 trucks aren't the greatest fifth wheel haulers. You need a 3500 if you want to haul the family as well.
jowest17 It's not a theory, and he just explained it. Tongue weight is payload, and tongue weight determines what the trailer can weigh since legal tongue weight is 15% of total trailer weight. Increasing the weight of the vehicle and its contents decreases the amount left over for additional payload (tongue weight). Less tongue weight equals a lot less trailer weight. Read more, learn more, suck less.
Fun Fact: the vehicle used to transport the US President since 2009, called “Cadillac One,” uses the third gen chassis of this same truck. So they essentially took a custom Cadillac car body and put it on one of these 6500 frames, albeit the previous gen frame before Navistar was involved. I think it’s known internally as the GMT560 chassis or something.
When are these manufacturers going to get wise to the fact that DEF pump are on the driver side at nearly every truck stop in America. DEF is considerably cheaper at the pump bs buying a jug, $2.79 gallon at the pump, $10-14 for a 2.5 gallon and $7+ for a single gallon. Come on GM put it on the drivers side!
I heard from a GM video that they put the def fluid on the passenger side because they were concerned that employees not used to driving a diesel truck will put diesel in the def fluid system. Most gas stations I've seen have long hoses on their pumps so you can simply pull it over the hood and fill up the def. I personally don't like doing that on my truck because it scratches the paint, however if it's just a dump truck for your company, who really cares.
Hello long time watcher of your videos. And I really like the detail that you can find about these vehicles. I would like to see the 5500 minute duty trucks comparison from Dodge Chevy and Ford.
Hopefully the gas engines are more powerful than the 6.8 V10 in my 2015 F550 work truck. With the 18' box and equipment, it weighs around 17000lbs so it is pretty gutless. I know it's not meant to be a race truck, but I've had some big rigs with trailers walk away from my truck.

We ran an '03 Kodiak 4500 with the 8.1 outfitted with a 10ft dump body for hauling concrete, gravel, etc. The thing is damn near indestructible. Just took it off the road in December and cleaning it up for who ever buys it next.
Old Dominion Welding YES! WOW!
Loved the 8.1 motor. I wish they had a better after market.
8.1L is a great motor. It is a bit thirsty though, but that’s to be expected.
That hood is how all trucks should be
Would be nice, but would also NEVER pass "passenger" crash tests...Plus your insurance would sky rocket...But you are right.
Freedom Rider why wouldnt it?
Looks like they took a bunch of parts leaft over from the last gens and threw them together and give to navistar and saymake me a truck
Wasn’t “looks like” leftovers, it is leftovers
Its not impressive at all. They got really lazy on it. I rather get an international MXT thats a bad A$$ truck
Just a more powerful engine and transmission. Big strong truck. No good features

It was just as bland
Great review! I’d love to have one of these set up as an overlanding rig.
I was thinking the same, but you would have to either weigh the shit out of it, or do some serious work to the suspension to soften it up. Stock, this truck would rattle your brain out your bottom on a wash board road lol
Mountain Man Jim obviously, no medium duty adventure rig is completely stock.

Our grain trucks are C65 Chevy C5500 GMC and F600 Ford trucks with capabilities of hauling about 300 bushels of hard red spring wheat or corn. (both use the same weight, 60 lbs/bushel.)
We have our trucks licensed to haul a max of 30,000 lbs gross. The trucks themselves weigh between 9,000 and 10,000 lbs. They are all 5 speed manuals with standard cabs, but not 4X4.

dedalliance1 because this sort of safety feature has existed for well over a decade. It's there so that the wind doesn't blow the hood down on you while you are working under it.

nice one. the lower power numbers must be compression for the max payload. they used to do that with the gas variants for decades.
The Allison 1000 6 speed is a great transmission idk why it’s horrible to you.
@@survivalguyfyi5718 they use the 2000 in the new 5500 and 6500 HD truck now. Also I’ve heard that Allison fixed the overheating problem with the transmission.

Only truck I could find at the time for the price I budgeted. Was not my preferred choice. 30 days after I bought it I lost all my fuel injectors, TCM, and Oil Cooler. Everything the fuel went through was destroyed. I know the Oil Cooler was due to fords differential metals in the Coolant system. My coolant is filtered now. At least with the 6.0 you have fixes. The 6.4s have issues with no way to fix them. To be honest, I’m not a fan of any of the new diesels with all the emissions junk they were forced to add. They’ve really turned them into expensive throwaway trucks because of the emissions stuff that goes out just out of Warrantee. EXPENSIVE!!! I’m eyeing Fords 7.3 gasser next. I never pull over 16k and it will do 17k-20k depending on your gears. Diesels run amazing until they don’t and there’s so much stuff that has to work in unison.

6500 has the same cab as the 2019 2500, touch screen 7" with apple car play and fully adjustable seats for driver and others.
650 does have the fip hood but it weighs over 100 lbs with very small grips. I am 220 lbs., not a small guy and it took me two trys to open the hood where s the Chevy I did it with one hand.
as far as service the Chevy still is easier to get to all the engine components because of the turning

Solid front axle is the best thing!
So the 3500 truck can tow more then 4500 and 5500 that makes no sense.
Way, way outside the legal capacity on those trucks.
jnk26 thats explains a lot. 👍🏽👍🏽
@@jnk26 Add 950lbs of cargo and you lose 6k lbs of trailer capacity?? I'd like to see the field tests proving that theory......
jowest17 It's not a theory, and he just explained it.
I would straight pipe the exhaust and put a tuner on it.

Im gonna wait for the Ford gas 7.3
It took GM 10 years to center the steering wheel to the drivers seat. Give them time
I heard from a GM video that they put the def fluid on the passenger side because they were concerned that employees not used to driving a diesel truck will put diesel in the def fluid system. Most gas stations I've seen have long hoses on their pumps so you can simply pull it over the hood and fill up the def. I personally don't like doing that on my truck because it scratches the paint, however if it's just a dump truck for your company, who really cares.
They got it right on the Chevy Colorado. I fill only at truck stop pumps.

@@Ericb1980 That's what cars are for :) I have a Ram 3500 with a solid front axel and it actually rides pretty well. Not like the trucks from 20 years ago that you felt like you were riding in a buckboard wagon.
@@Ericb1980 it's a class 4-5 truck. Probably gonna be stiff unloaded. If ride quality is #1 then a f150 or equivalent is what you'll want.
Oh hang on, got to turn around, hold my spot please got to fill up def. Hold up everyone at truck stop or just haul jugs of def everywhere. Dumbass design. Good looking truck though.
Billy Driggers the pumps I use are separate, I can fill both at the same time, from either side. Not all fueling stations are the same
That's GM for ya
So all semi trucks have the def on driver side? I doubt it.
Daniel Junior all the new ones do unless ordered different. The early semis did have them on the passenger and driver side because I think no one really knew where to put the tanks. IMO
Daniel Junior yes they do.
I love those new medium duty chevys. My next truck is one of those
Def Fliud on the passenger side prevents accidental pumping it into the diesel tank which is severe if done. With multiple drivers, employees etc. it pays off to have it separated. Question, I know the truck can’t be very smooth. Did that give you the voice struggle? Is it that rough? Thank you for the review
Arent the DEF inlets much more smaller than diesel nozzles?
An unloaded 5500 is sure to be a very rough ride
My diesel car has def in the trunk. It’s just the small dick, big truck guys whining. They’ve never even used def
The def nozzle is smaller and many have put def in their diesel tank and destroy the entire fuel system at minimum. Just nobody want to admit it. And when you buy a used duramax, you have some assurance that this hasn’t happened to that used vehicle
Keith Hannah The def nozzle is smaller and many have put def in their diesel tank and destroy the entire fuel system at minimum. Just nobody want to admit it. And when you buy a used duramax, you have some assurance that this hasn’t happened to that used vehicle
Would be nice to see what the front axle looks like
If the diesel engine wasn't dumbed down by the EPA this would be a beast!
Well, if you live in certain places you can delete these and then it will be a beast.
dedalliance1 Any modifications to emissions systems which decrease their effectiveness are illegal everywhere in the US. It’s a federal law. It’s just without a state inspection scheme it’d be really unusual for you to be caught.
@@cjeam9199 Very true, but even in places with the smog tests, a lot of people just register their vehicles in another state and have the tags mailed to them. Which is kind of illegal in itself but people do it anyway. I live in Montana where there's no sales tax, and a lot of people register their very expensive sports cars here to avoid getting taxed on millions of dollars in their car collections, still illegal but often done.
@@WilliamStewart1 horse power and torque numbers are irrelevant transmission ratios are far more important to getting weight moving and then comes axle ratio you could take a 20 horse power tractor and gear it so low in the trans it could pull anything but slow
@@WilliamStewart1 270 HP Semi? I bet it has at least 1,000 foot pounds of torque or better though which is the real winner. And like Torque Monster said it's more about gearing, that's why semi's had 18 and 22 speeds back in the day because they did only have 250-350 hp and 1,000 foot pounds of torque so they needed every gear they could get to get to speed.
It's been my understanding the 2500/3500 are rated at the crank HP/torque and commercial 4500/5500/6500 are rated from the wheels. So after the transmission/transfer case and rear end take out the difference of power.
Did I see Navistar? Pass. We all know how the 6.0+6.4 turned out
0:28s ... it's already leaking. And from the sweat on Andre's face, it wasn't the AC working...
that's where the AC dumps. every GM Truck dumps the condensation there
@@Ericb1980 I guess the AC sucks in it considering he was sweating like crazy
I don't know why I'm watching this. This truck isn't available in Europe where I live. But it's fascinating to watch anyway.
Needs Michelin XZLs. Giant, flippin, XZLs!!!
*I'm Waiting For The GMC Version* plus Those Wheels Look tiny On That Massive Truck! 🚛
it will be a long wait then because it will only come out on the Chevy side. GM is pushing the GMC brand away from the commercial business.

A great review on the the truck any plans to do a review on the Ford, Dodge 5500.?
I like it, no shitty excessive electronics, downgrade power to make it more safe to the engine and transmission, looks really good on the chassis, this would be my choice, not the 1000 lb/tq and 100 ton of electronics new trucks
LDT
150/1500 - 1/2 ton
250/2500 - 3/4 ton
350/3500 - 1 ton
450/4500 - 2 ton
MDT
550/5500 - 3 ton
650/6500 - 4 ton
750/7500 - 5 ton
Etc...
Or is a 3 ton considered light duty?
What all is different in each one to give them these towing abilities?
550 might not be medium duty. Generally that is 650+ class
How can they call 2500/3500 HD’s then
@@BetaRacer24 rear axle is full floater on gm hd. It's full floater on f250+ since 1991. Ford has much better axles
@@D4x4Bronc not even true. I've seen plenty of mid 2000 f250s and mid 90s with no full floater
Not known by many dealers is that there is an Allison 2750 option that gives you a GCW of 37,500lbs.
Ford is building a bigger Super Duty that is still in pickup truck size. Now Ford has a F250, F350, F450, F550, and brand NEW F600.
My favorite comment in the whole video is about having to go from a 5500 to a 3500 if you really want to move a lot of weight. Ummm, sure. That's why they build the 5500 that way--so you can go get your regular pickup if anything heavy needs to be towed. There is a difference between commercial engineering and consumer marketing. Consumer marketing makes you think that your 3500 can routinely and safely do whatever the company says it can for purposes of the latest fad, and better than a commercial truck engineered for the purpose. Not.
They de-rate the engines for longevity.
Exactly.
As does Ford and Ram.
Which is exactly what I would do if someone gave me a diesel ( I'm not buying this crap)..ram Ford gm any of them, when I did construction we had an 03 ram3500 5.9 common rail 5 spd 2wd what we pulled near 10klbs everyday and not once did we ever think it needed more power if I got a new truck i would put a normal turbo that's not pushing boost all the freaking time and detune to 600-650 torque, that's more than any intelligent man will need from a passenger pickup and will last alot longer
And has a smaller turbo to increase low-end torque.
@@Trident_Euclid a smaller turbo increases low end torque? So less air gives u more torque? Please explain ..
Glad they're back, really missed them !
FINALLY GM PUT A SOLID AXLE UNDER A TRUCK AGAIN!!!!
The Navistar looks a lot better imo the front clip looks a lot better. I'd like to see a comparison to see if there's anything else different about the trucks.
My 2019 Ford F450 has a much tighter turning radius and a higher GCWR than that 5500. Seems like GM just wasted a few years of development
Cam Kenimer no body cares
I always wondered how a 4wd dually work truck like that would fair offroad, It would for sure be an interesting test to compare it to lets say base spec 4wd silverado 1500
They're not very good offroad, the suspension is so stiff and they don't articulate well. The 4wd system is for outright traction on bad roads and snow.
@@WilliamStewart1 which is why it would be interesting to see. Taking vehicles out of their comfort zone is always interesting
Currently GM’ s best product is the new Corvette. Rest of their lineup is a mess.
JeepCherokeeful yeah I don’t know what the hell GM is doing. Cadillac is doing okay, and obviously the Corvette...but everything else is just complete trash and the design team needs to be fired. So glad I went with Ram because Chevy is absolutely shitting the bed on everything they touch
Cadillac is a joke these days, cant believe they are dumping the CTS nameplate. But the Camaro aint bad man, I just dont like the new front ends they made...
Jared Bouck absolutely, but somehow they don’t get it? Insane! Luckily I’m a Ford fan, but still. Their board of directors must be so incompetent.
HOONSTARS only GM would be so stupid to dump the Camaro a second time. And it wouldn’t surprise me.
True stuff everyone wants a corvette as for everything else
I want a Silverado with a 8 SPEED MANUAL SUPER LOW GEARS
with the inline diesel i will never see it
That truck looks awesome
*Ford F-750 has joined the chat*
Why not a old school Detroit!! Screaming Jimmy!!
That 7.3L gas ford with 10 speed is looking good. 😃
until the transmission snaps in half
I hope Gm introduces at least a sister model to the Silverado 4500/5500 since its's a replacement to the kodiak.
I think the GMC model should be called the Maverick.

Mountain Man Jim At 4,000?! Where are they from, Atlantis? I can't feel elevation until at least 6500-7000, and I'm pretty sure I'm just a regular guy.
@@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney lol, I feel that. I didnt notice it until after I moved down to the coast and back. Some that grew up coastal or at least low level can experience effects similar to high altitude sickness just by ascending 1000ft too quickly. Others dont acclimate from going up and down all the time. I live at 10,000 feet now, but even when I drop down into Denver I'll catch myself wheezing and short on breath in Denver. These guys drive upto 10k and above trail riding and I imagine its likely the same.
After talking to people around here. It is more common than most would think. Most people can acclimate quickly and never notice a difference while others can struggle for life

Andre did you get your CDL yet?
Title: "when a dually just won't do"
Except it is a dually, and the smaller dually is more powerful, more maneuverable and can tow more and do more. Briliant
Brian Wilson no way, GM would never make such a mistake!
False. the frame is way way heavier duty than a dually frame. Not even close.
Eric Bishop ford s new f600 has more capacity than this. Oops, GM failed again!
Sorry, but that’s the honest truth. Too sad!
Why are we reviewing U-Haul trucks again?
Perhaps a TFLCommercial or TFLIndustrial channel is in the works?
Sam Johnson you don’t have to watch it.
tflcrossover or tflsuv or tflwater would potentially be possible?
Limited at 69 and at 75 mph depending on the gear ratio. Ram 5500 limited at 88mph. Just made a vid recording the tach.
And here I was under the impression that there wasn't porn on the RUclips
This is excellent off-road 4x4 with front differential and rear differential. It will handle very well the worst road and sand dunes in Africa.
