- Three of the world's most influential women - Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney and Melinda French Gates - have told BBC 100 Women they want to end child marriage within a generation.
Each year, 12 million underaged girls are forced into marriage - a crisis that at the current rate will take over 300 years to fix, according to the UN.
But former First Lady Mrs Obama told BBC News "it is an issue that can be solved tomorrow".

Child marriage, child rape, child sexual harassment are common problems in my country. People do not seem to be aware of the child laws. Even the national sportsmen, actors, politicians, public figures get involved with under 18 sexual harassment. That is such a shame. Standing with your mission for children.❤

These are traditional pratices that people strongly identify with. They have been there for thousands of years. Enacting laws that put people in jail for practicing their traditions is quite sad and doesn't solve the root cause of the problem. The only way this practice can end is if there is enough development and education. Like that, people get to learn about the adverse effects of early marriages, they also get to have jobs and careers that keep them busy until they can sustain themselves, until then, this will be a common occurence.
I come from such a culture, have family members that have been married off and I disagree with you. In many cases school is available and free but they still take the girls out coz it’s tradition like you said. I think if you practice tradition that harms another individual you should be jailed. That alone isn’t enough. Governments have to intensify campaigns to educate entire families on the value of girl education. Involve the community leaders, make it a community effort. Let people feel it’s their own initiative for their own good

Economic development which results in a demand for educated labor is what transforms cultures of traditional abuse towards women into cultures in which women become valued co-contributors to the health of the greater economy. The original poster is correct, you cannot force change through laws, but only though altering the underlying conditions which support the objectionable cultural practices.

@@kingofherosking3510 For sure super hard, and at great cost, but what's the cost of not making that investment? Continuing geopolitical instability at even greater cost. And it has nothing to do with forcing morals, around the world, economic development has led to the same cultural changes over time regardless of base culture. When people gain economic independence, they demand freedom and respect.

They sell their daughters for money and then don't have the expense for their upkeep. I remember (last year?) seeing an interview of Afghan men who had and were in the process of selling their little girls. They stood proud saying they had to because they couldn't afford to live and "raise their sons" - but they had really nice clothes, shoes, etc, and looked very healthy, not starving. It's an accepted part of their culture & they don't see anything wrong with it. How do you fix that? It really will be up to the women - edit: meaning that the men aren't going to change it. They like the total dominance.

We are all connected ,what happens in one part of the world affects us all,we just don’t see it immediately ! For example deseases they happen on poor countries then they get exported everywhere and we have a pandemic that kill anybody in every country ,so everybody matters we are the citizens of just one planet .

So many of the world's problems could be solved with a commitment from the wealthy nations to invest in the development of the poorer nations until we all enjoy the same degree of economic freedom. Sadly the political culture in many wealthy nations has become isolationist and protectionist, which will only further enflame the problems these politicians are trying to solve through denial.

I didn't watch the video but it makes me so angry how rich people are talking about solutions and ideas. You can't change culture or traditions. Nor can you stop a corrupt government from treating their citizens badly. That's why so many people from Africa are fleeing their countries and come to Europe. I surely would do the same.

I used to work at LaLanterna cafe in the West Village in NY. Amal used to frequent the place often. I worked in the lower floor where the fireplaces were. I worked as a server while I was in college. She was a bad tipper. I never forget bad tips. She tipped me .50 cents one time. She had a cup of coffee and lingered at the cafe for hours. How do people live on such poor tips? I always tip the minimum of $5 bucks. I hear all this news that she is an advocate for women. I couldn't even support myself with .50 cents tips.

Who said it would take 300 years to change these practices, some old well-suited men calculated that? Based on what? As it didn't take quite that long to make it law, why another 300 years to make it a communal norm? Yet another flimsy excuse to do nothing about it, ever. Women taking action, not just on behalf of other women and girls, but on behalf of boys, men in every context, the environment, their communities, education, etc are one the most potent unstoppable forces. I'd say in the case of Amal, a lawyer, her husband (a mediocre actor) married well. In the case of Obama, she's equally educated as her husband. In the case of Gates, she has more education as her ex, a college dropout.
