  • Thank you to our alpha patron Joel for this AWESOME request. Wow. Once that second half hits, it's like leaving the stratosphere. It becomes something completely new and just absolutely slays. These guys are now two for two.... can't wait to hear more!

The Glen Campbell story I heard from Alice Cooper; Alice and hlen were golfing buddies, one day Eddie Van Halen came to Alice one day and asked him if he could hook Eddie up with Glen for a guitar lesson.

This is my favorite modern cover of this song. My favorite version out of the first generation covers was done by Vaughn Monroe, whose deep baritone vocal gave the traditional rendition some weight.

According to Ray Manzerek the original release of this song by The Sons Of The Pioneers back in the 40s was the inspiration for Riders on the Storm. They were playing around in the studio late one night with the original and out flowed ROTS. They laid down the instrumental tracks and Jim Morrison returned much later by himself and did the vocal track. He left for Paris a day or two later, never to return. Which would make it his last recording. One could say he joined the ghost riders in the sky.

Hughie was the lead vocals on this one. First time I heard this was by Frankie Laine, from a transistor radio sitting on the table in the kitchen of a cabin by a lake in the woods. I was about 12, and was fascinated with the song. Fast-forward to my being a 20-something fan of the Outlaws working in a stereo equipment/music store, eagerly awaiting this album's appearance on the record racks. They killed it, and my remembered 12 year old self nodded with approval.

Awesome version. Being from the UK, the version I'm most familiar with is by a band called "The Shadows", who have been around since the late 50's and contains Britain's first guitar hero, a guy by the name of Hank Marvin. Any British guitarist from the 60's or 70's will tell you they were influenced by Hank Marvin, including Tony Iommi and Brian May!
