    FINAL FANTASY VI is my favorite game of all time! So when I looked up TOP 5 FACTS ABOUT FF6, I was floored so I made this TOP 5 FACTS about the game. I already knew about HIRONOBU SAKAGUCHI stepping back for a little while during the DEVELOPMENT OF FF6, but to learn about how YOSHINORI KITASE directed the game and took on bigger roles within SQUARE ENIX to make this game work was really something! I mean he also created the characters CELES and GAU while Sakaguchi himself had great influence over characters like TERRA and LOCKE! TETSUYA NOMURA, better known for his role in the KINGDOM HEARTS SERIES also created characters like SHADOW and SETZER! FF6 also has my favorite SOUNDTRACK of all time, composed by none other than the man himself NOBUO UEMATSU! I'm still surprised that the SUPER FAMICOM and SUPER NINTENDO could handle the power of this cart! Good job, SQUARE ENIX!

    I did not think I could have more respect for Woolsey but you just told me he did this localization on a 30 day deadline.

      All those early localization projects had to be done lightning quick, and yes I too had an insane amount of respect for him after I read that fact!

    • @Pelashi
      @Pelashi 3 дня назад

      His localization certainly has its quirks (although "son of a submariner" remains hilarious), but in a lot of cases he really improved some otherwise very dry text. Even if it's a bit less accurate, "He'd slit his mama's throat for a nickel" is much, MUCH more interesting writing than the 'corrected' line: "He'd kill his best friend for the right price."
      And, actually, Woolsey's characterization of Kefka (goofier, more flamboyant) apparently made him more popular and memorable in America than he was in Japan, to the extent that Kitase used that version in later iterations of the character.

    Spoony is not a bad or weird translation.
    Look up the word "spoony" it's old timey slang that essentially means overly emotional. Telleh is supposed to be practically ancient, it would make sense he would use old timey slang. And Edward is in fact, a spoony bard.

    My fan theory for the game is that Kefka is Bahram, and lost most his memory/mind/etc during the multitude of magicite experiments... the timeline matches up, but moreover it helps explain why Shadow is almost always near Kefka during parts of the story, he's keeping an eye on him. Shadow is the one who tries to stop Kefka on the floating continent, and after Kefka finally dies Shadow knows his job is done so he goes to rest on the collapsing tower.

      @@mestrealvarensisoh dude that's pretty disturbing , then that means celes is possibly a clone of Baram. She has similar hair color, but just imagine that Baram was infused with magicite first. Then they cloned him, that's why celes has inherent magic and runs knight capabilities because it's in her genes. They may have even used Shiva as a surrogate. I think Woolsey did a great job at localization. Certain things were altered, usually to conform to NOA censorship standards, and I think that he did the best that he could given the short deadline, and the ever present problem of cutting down the script to still fit on the cartridge when converted to English which requires more space to say the same things. The man is a legend.
    People often cite Secret of Mana as an example of bad translation, but with the short time given and the cartridge space limitations (the game was originally being developed for CD and had to be heavily cut down to fit on a cartridge when that fell through, and you can definitely feel that later in the game where it is obvious things had to be rushed and condensed, and then the localization itself had to undergo a similar process) it is a miracle that we got what we did.
    Sure, he took some liberties, but I quite enjoyed them. It's funny how Frog from Chrono Trigger talks in a "ye olde" type of way even though no one else from the same time period talks that way. If you notice, in the flashbacks of when he was still human he talked like everyone else. It makes me wonder then if his manner of speaking, though an artifact of the localization at the end of the day, was caused by the curse that turned him into a frog, or if it is something he picked up for reasons unknown. It helps him stand out more distinctly in a game where so much is conveyed through text and limited animations, so I don't think taking liberties like that is always a bad thing, especially when in English the process of giving a character a different tone or manner of speaking is different than in other languages. That's one reason I prefer the original SNES script.
    Here's to you, Woolsey, and all of your immortal Woolseyisms.

    • @BeerFloof

      Also, I imagine the whole Sim City idea could work for a kind of pseudo-sequel that takes place after the ending and the goal is to rebuild the world to its former glory and beyond. Although magic has disappeared from the world, there would still be powerful beasts to make things difficult. It could be a fun game, but knowing how many mobile games there are about building cities or whatever that are marred by ridiculously long real time waiting that you have to pay real money if you want to speed up, only being able to work on one structure at a time unless you pay more money, and other microtransactions, paired with the knowledge that Square Enix is not afraid to make Final Fantasy mobile games built around popular micro transaction systems like real time waiting and gacha mechanics, and suddenly this idea that sounds like it could have been fun if it was made in the '90s or '00s suddenly sounds less appealing

      I think one thing he was criticized for was a liberal use of the “American-isms” that took many non-Americans out of the game. It’s something that bothered me as a kid but not as an adult. “Way to go!”
      Frog has certain old Japanese grammar as well, so that’s a good translation from Ted.

    It's amazing how fantastic games can be made with so few people. It shows that most games don't NEED 3000 devs, photo realistic graphics, and 100% voice acting to be good.

      @TheReturnersHideout  2 месяца назад +1

    • @Veladus
      @Veladus 2 месяца назад +1

      And if FF6 was released today, it would be less popular than Nickelback. This is the evolution of the industry, not some grand observation on complexity. EVERY game had only a handful of devs and development time back then. And nowadays, every Triple A game is made by 3000 people over 5 years. That includes Square's games.
      "You don't need photo realistic graphics and quality voice acting, you just need the rose tinted nostalgia goggles I have for a game I played in my childhood" There, I fixed that typo for you. Some indie games hit it big with unique and quality gimmicks. FF6 would not, because it doesn't offer anything unique. It didn't at the time of its release either. If anything it was regressive, not featuring a superboss after 5 introduced them and how it devolved into spamming ultima and there being no meaningful distinction between characters (besides Gau and the sasquatch, which were distinct but not in a good way). The only thing FF6 would get is *TORCHED* for how buggy it was, and rightfully so. People whine about patches nowadays, but it beats paying $80 for a game and 30 years later it still nukes your saves if Relm uses her custom command. I'm sure the rose tinted glasses are already being donned, so go ahead and google "Final Fantasy 6 bugs". Check the wiki. There's a shitload of them.

    • @Applemangh
      @Applemangh 2 месяца назад +1

      @Veladus You can fix bugs and balance the gameplay WITHOUT the photorealistic graphics, voice acting, or a massive budget. Every complaint you can (rightfully) make against FF6 is completely unrelated to my original post no nostalgia goggles needed.

    • @TheReturnersHideout
      @TheReturnersHideout  2 месяца назад +1

      @Veladus but.. FF6 DID release recently and sold really well in the form of a pixel remaster. And to say something would sell as well as Nickelback, don’t let your own opinion of something flaw the facts, they still sell far above average sales despite people saying they hate them. Proof is in numbers (take a peek at their Spotify streams real quick).
      I can understand rose tinted glasses can get in the way, 100%. But to call it regressive because it didn’t have a featured enemy that the last game had is irresponsible at best. It actually did have a super boss that got cut. Yes it’s no secret to anyone who loves or hates the game that it’s full of bugs, but please google that same phrase with any game tacked onto the end of it. Every game has bugs, it happens. You simply don’t know if it would perform well if the game was brand new - no one does, and to claim that you DO know is just impossible. You can have an opinion about probability and all that but it’s still just an opinion.
      Thank you for your comment! There’s no reason to get snippy with folks for having a strong opinion about something that is in opposition to your strong opinion.
      tl;dr - just let people have fun, friend. Life’s better that way.

      We're all reminded of this from time to time, and it's always lovely. I'd say the latest example is probably Balatro with its simple graphics, made by one fellow (as his first game, no less) and currently nominated for 2024's "game of the year" in numerous gaming award presentations.
      There's always going to be those huge budget overproduced games made for mass audiences, but the smaller games have always served as the heart and soul of the industry.

    While Ted Woolsey's work did become controversial for awhile, I think most people who grew up with the series in the SNES era now agree it's acquired something of a narm charm and, regardless of what's technically accurate, you have to tip your hat to the old son of a submariner.

      I think part of it is her lack of empathy at first, she's really young as a general of the empire so she's actually very out of touch with her own instincts. So much so that the entire world ends before she realizes what she's lost. I've also heard you actually are playing from her perspective in world of ruin but that the reason the world seems bleak is actually because that's how celes sees the world, it's not actually how it looks.

    FF6 Moogles are blind. Cave dwelling creatures often lose their eyesight, these Moogles are always squinting. Furthermore, when Mog (or any moogle) opens his eyes in shock, you can get a good look at their very big eyes and you can see that their pupils are completely white. This means little to no light is making it to his retinas.
    So how are they able to walk around as though they can see? Their squinty eyes are not the only change from FF5 to FF6: they also gained that adorable pom-pom antenna. This is why Mog hates it getting touched (as noted in FF Ultimania): you're practically poking the thing he uses to see!

      @@Nealend86I used to think this but a detail came to light that gogo in ff6 has no backstory meaning it's actually not the same gogo from the end of the ff5 fight. In fact, the sunken tower of walz where gogo is found may have been there for hundreds of years, and at the end of ff6 gogo drops to the first floor of Kefkas tower. In ff5 gogo is on the first floor, which is actually the last floor. Gogo enters the rift and doesn't go to ff6 they go to ff14s universe. So chronologically, ff6->5->14.

      Most likely, when the name was picked, someone in Japan read about the Scottish (or is it Irish?) myth, but never heard it said out loud, so they said it phonetically. Nearly 30 years later, people in the west tried to tell them the historical pronunciation, but they’d been saying Cait Sith for decades, and decided to stick with it. There's multiple RPGs over the years that have this 'rebuild the ruined town' mechanic to them, and it tends to work well, I think it could've worked well in FF6 since Strago/Relm never really get 'justice' after their initial scenes and that'd be a good way to keep them relevant.

    I do like Amano's artwork, but something I've always hated is the disconnect between the in-game sprites for character designs, the artwork, and also the in-game portraits! Locke for example, his in-game sprite has a headband like the artwork and his portrait has a full head-covering bandana. Celes, like Terra, wears a leotard with pauldrons in the sprite, but the artwork has her with a completely different outfit. She also has a headband in her sprite that's blue and goes across her whole head, but in the portrait and the artwork, it's like a little back barrette thing? Why are the designs so inconsistent, even in later versions, lol.
    I will say, I do prefer the sprite designs over both the portrait and the artwork, for all the FFs with this problem, cause even though I like Amano's overall artstyle, the character designs all blend into each other due to the sort of same face and hair syndrome, lol.
