Don't feel good
We are right in the horsefly season now, so I seem to be getting quite a few comments on this series of videos. There is a lot of media coverage on the subject at the moment. I have just done a quick Google check and can find half a dozen recent articles by different news outlets, almost all identical word for word. I go to the doctor with mine and get prescription medication as I do seem to react. By coincidence, I am currently putting together a video for this year. It was not a horsefly this time (still plenty of time to get a real one), so it did not turn out so bad.
I will just paste a couple of examples copied from the news articles (as I say, the others are virtually identical).
What should I do if I get bitten?
It's important to keep the bite clean because if bacteria gets into the skin it can become infected. It's best to clean the wound with an antiseptic soap and warm water.
You could apply an ice pack to help soothe the area and stop the itching.
Doctors normally recommend using an over-the-counter steroid cream containing hydrocortisone. Ibuprofen gel can also help ease any pain and swelling.
How to treat a horsefly bite
If you have been bitten, do not scratch the bite, even if it is itchy.
Do not apply any chemical hygiene or cleaning products, as this could make an infection worse or exacerbate the itchiness.
Instead, use cold water and soap and clean around the bite. Then use a cold compress to reduce any swelling and numb the area.
If the bite does not reduce in size over the course of a few days, or if it gets worse, contact your doctor.
@@GrandadsOtherChannel I know side effects dizziness light headed .all true
I got bit by something a couple of months ago and my reaction was the worse I’ve had in my life. The entire area started very red until it turned into a dark red-purple and lasted more than a week. Similar to yours. Now I think it was one of those flies, my first time
Sounds right ☹
Thanks for your video
Oh no. This just happened to me yesterday. I suspected it was a horsefly bite. I’ve never had one before. I was shocked the redness has spread like yours. No blister yet. I’ve been applying 5% iodine and neosporin. Damn those horseflies!
I do seem to react badly to them. The main thing I have noticed with the horse fly bites is they are quite distinctive, like they have taken a good sized bite, quite a large hole relatively speaking. They seem to get me most years, one way or another. You probably won't want to watch this video where I look at one (dead) under a microscope, the mouth parts are quite "interesting" ruclips.net/video/rTL1YEHrQxE/видео.html
GrandadsOtherChannel I actually will watch that video. Thanks! My bite is still burning today and the skin is tender to the touch. I have a main bite like in your video but it almost looks like I have two other lighter bites. My doctor prescribed antibiotics but I’m treating mine with the neosporin ointment mixed with 5% Lugol’s iodine solution so far. It seems slightly better today. No blister and the swelling has reduced. I actually saw the fly on my sliding glass screen in my bedroom and shut the door quickly. I thought I had trapped it but apparently not. It must have got me during the night. I had no idea these flies did this to people.
GrandadsOtherChannel, I wanted to mention to you my bite is healing. I’ve been putting iodine drops mixed with neosporin on the entire bruised area and it seems to have helped. No more burning and the tenderness has reduced. I came across some info on the Lugol’s iodine page that said giving cows iodine along with apple cider vinegar stopped biting flies. I’m going to start taking this as a precaution. Can’t hurt. Thought I would mention it in case you wanted to try it.

Thanks for the tips 😍👍
Crazy what a little thing can do 😱
I just seem to react badly to them. Probably an allergic reaction built up over the years.
I was bit by one nearly 2 days ago at the beach (confusing part is that it was at the beach, I was laid/sat on the shallow wand of water I felt a sting on my knee and saw it and it scared the sh8t out of me. Luckily I felt it as soon as it started biting so now I just have a small red-Pink spot on my knee.
Good luck, not everybody reacts as badly as I do, and of course some people get it worse.
I have to deal with these all the time at work (gardener),couple of tips to aviod the buggers, light clothing, and feel out for a "bump" they like to give you a prod before a bite,so if you feel a tap look low there normally flying about 6 inchs off the grass, anti hayfever tablets are good for getting rid of the swelling to,and Ice
Thanks, I am on antihistamines all summer anyway. I just seem to react badly to them anyway. Annoyingly, you will find I have a similar video most years. (playlist in the video description).
@@GrandadsOtherChannel Ah they tend to help with my bites, buggers though mate,I hate the things two of my gardens are bad for them, both are by farms.also sorry for the coment spam just enjoying the videos
@@scalestuff1066 happy to receive all your comments. That video with the low view of the grass and clover was filmed at Dyrham Park - a National Trust site - they have deer and cows in the fields. One of the worst places for me and horseflies, 😕 but a good site for kites and gliders.
@@GrandadsOtherChannel Awesome really enjoying the content, youtube seems to want me to watch news.Ah its always the way.I used to go to a very pretty old lake with my boats, the sides where terrible for leaches and I stopped going they where such a pest!
@@scalestuff1066 yuck, not keen on that 😆
I had something similar although smaller , not sure if it was horsefly but the best thing is to apply germolene several times a day and clean the area with antibacterial soap and water, cover the area with a sterile dressing

Thanks for the Vlod ,I was wondering what bit me and its identical to yours , Wife thinks I need antibiotics, but getting a doctors appointment in 2022 is near on impossible .
There are plenty of people who give their favourite cures in the comments, but my advice is "Don't trust anything you read in RUclips comments" and I think a visit to the doctor is the best bet, or at least a chat with a pharmascist at the chemists. You could try the NHS online 111.nhs.uk/ to step through your symptoms.
Bloody he'll, that looks a right mess!!@ive got two on the go at the minute. Not as bad as you though, albeit bloody itchy. I got one on my hand once while playing golf 🏌️♂️ ended up in A and E as my hand swelled up like a balloon!!!
Yes, I seem to react badly. If you check the video description, you will see I have a playlist for these videos, seems to happen every couple of years.
I kept getting bit by normal flies (not horse). Felt like little pin pricks, but after seeing this I don't think I will complain.
I am not sure which is technically worse, some flies inject stuff into you when they bite, the horsefly just tears a hole and mops the blood up. I believe the problem with the horsefly is often stuff that was on the surface of your skin getting inside through the hole. It is only the female that does this. The males feed on fruit and don't have the mouth parts to stab you.
I was bit by 2 yesterday, I don't reactive as bad as you but its incredibly itchy and lasts for a week. One of them bit me through my clothing! This has happened before!
Happens to me nearly every year regardless of what precautions I take.
Currently suffering with 3 horsefly bites on my leg, two very close together. Swollen lump where the bite is and very red. No blister yet, but has happened before. Very painful! Hate horseflies!!! Luckily one bite was through clothing so not as bad as the others
I feel your pain ☹😢
@@GrandadsOtherChannel I'm not enjoying it 🤣
I am allergic to horsefly/ greyfly bites. Everytime I get bitten reaction is worse than last time. They bit through your clothes, even denim. Bug repellent doesn't work. Afraid to go outside on hot sunny days. Bites easily get infected and are so painful and itchy.
I know exactly what you mean, puts you off going outdoors.
Goodness, next time try taking some Benadryl or other antihistamine and use an ice pack to slow down the swelling. Hydrocortisone only works on the surface layer of the skin. What you’re experiencing is beneath those layers, that’s why it doesn’t work too well for bites, but works well for things like nettles, or poison oak.
Looks painful, but hopefully you’ll find something that works. Good luck!
Thanks for the suggestion. Are you a doctor?
Mine didn't go that bad. Yes it did got swollen and yes it later opened up and bleed and a little puss come out. But it wasn't that bad like yours
For some reason, RUclips has just seen fit to present me with your comment 3 months late. It seems to like doing that. Thanks for commenting 😊👍 Hope your bite sorted itself out by now, or you have a real problem.
I get the same reactions, had one top of arm near armpit, had antibiotics, was told if it spreads under armpit can be dangerous as can spread to your lymph nodes so fed up. I got stung in the neck by a wasp ended up in A&E more antibiotics again 😁,. Hope you don't suffer anymore this year take care
Thanks, I did have some insect bites earlier this year, but no Horse Flies, didn't go quite as bad but still had me limping and feeling sorry for myself. 😁
I was testing my motorized bicycle build yesterday and got a bite on my head. I couldn't imagine what it'd do to you...
Unusual to get one on the head, not very pleasant wherever you get one 😆👍
@@GrandadsOtherChannel joker ate on me for a min because I couldn't stop 😅🤦🏻 luckily for me it just itches like hell...
@@coltonrooster if it in a spot you can't see, you will need somebody to keep an eye on it, they do get infected easily and that is the main problem.
@@GrandadsOtherChannel My superior genetics and antibodies laugh at the thought of infection from a mere fly! muahhahaha...
@@coltonrooster good luck 😆🤞
I got a bite on my right breast again deffo been bitten by something had loads of bites over different bits of my body
I got bitten on the scalp by one yesterday it was one of those big black horsefly's .attacked from side when I was walking and tagged me on the side of the head just above my ear. I didn't see it coming or hear anything.it was just a tightening of the scalp feeling and pain right after.i did see it dart off after it bit me.thkugh and it was a large black insect .the thing locked on me and hit.like a stealth bomber.
Interesting, I hadn't heard of people being bitten on the scalp before today and you are the second person to say it. You will see ThrottleWarningFPV has had the same problem.
@@GrandadsOtherChannel the thing is I think it was a horse fly I'm not sure I can't think of anything else that would do that though.
It left like a scratch deep scratch wound on my scalp
@@marklarson4251 have you recovered from your bite yet?
I have been bitten by a horseflie I had to go to hospital my right breast was so painful and swollen up huge spreading of awful rash and the pain was so awful
Yes, they seem to cause a lot of infection for lots of people, including me ☹️
awesome bite
It wasn't much fun, and checking back I seem to have done a similar video most years around that time.
Holy smokes!!!
Seems to be a regular occurance for me, most years I get bitten.
Got bit today god it hurt like cigarette being put out on my skin
Unfortunately a horsefly bite is different to most other flies. Other flies have a needle like mouthpart that penetrates the skin easily, instead, the horsefly tears the skin and the open wound often becomes infected.
Put aloe vera and tea tree oil on it, Blessed Be.
Had serious infection from my horsefly thought I lose my right breast
Not very pleasant 😕
was it painful bite
Possibly not as bad as a sting by a wasp depending on what wasps you have in your country but the end result was far more painful and longer lasting.
They bite so dang hard one bit me threw two shirts
Yes, nasty little beasts. Only the females bite you as they need your blood for their breeding cycle 😆
I had one that took months to heal.
Yes that would be right 👍
My right breast swelled to three times the size then it went red then purple then it started to look like the skin was turning black colour I was so scared
Iv'e never in my life been bitten by a horse fly but see them often.
It is not something I would recommend 😆
@@GrandadsOtherChannel I see lol
Wow "G", that is some mess the bite left. You sure take bad reactions to those bites. Do you use an insect repellent on your skin? If you don't then you should start using one.
After watching this video I looked up the Horsefly and seen the mess other people have had with them. They also said that the exceptional hot weather has meant more insects in general and that we have as many Horsefly's in the UK as they have in the Mediterranean because of the hot weather. Yes, I would be putting some sort of insect repellent on.
😆
U can get serious infection from those horse fly's can turn deadly
i never had that problem when bit by a horse fly or redness, just leave it alone!!
Some people are lucky like that, but clearly I am not alone if you check out the other comments
@@GrandadsOtherChannel u could just be allergic!!
@@djcrazy2685 That is rather what I say in the videos. If you check the video description, I have a series of these videos. I get bitten most years at around the same time of the year. Like I said, I am not alone. Just read some other comments down here, where people are suffering the same problem.
I got bit by one its proper bad and red after a good 3 weeks
Yes, that sounds about right. Have you treated it with anything?
😥
@@GrandadsOtherChannel I put some anthisan cream on it but didn't really work
@@M1.942 I think I get hydrocortisone prescribed by the doctor but it still takes ages to heal. Eventually it dries up and peels off. You will see in the comments here, various suggestions but I would go with doctors advice.
@@GrandadsOtherChannel theirs no open doctors in Sheffield rn kinda annoying
I waited in A&E from 7pm left at 9am in the morning people should take horse fly's bites more serious because they can fxxk us up bad
Well you put don’t watch in the thumbnail and not a lot of people did bro
It is for reference, not to generate views.
thats a staph infection not a 'horsefly bite' ... geez!
get those antibiotics in ya man!!!!! cover it thick with triple antibiotic cream as well!
Maybe research horseflies before posting misinformation. Adult horse-flies feed on nectar and plant exudates; the males have weak mouthparts and only the females bite animals to obtain enough protein from blood to produce eggs. The mouthparts of females are formed into a stout stabbing organ with two pairs of sharp cutting blades, and a spongelike part used to lap up the blood that flows from the wound. The larvae are predaceous and grow in semiaquatic habitats.
White vinegar works the best... my bites never last more than 4 days. Never turns into a blister either, however they itch like crazy on the second and third day... ice packs stop the itching and takes down the swelling. I hate horse flies... one of the worst things on our planet.
I guess you are lucky
Nasty 🤢
Those horse flies do rather like me, it seems they keep coming back each year.
