  • TOYOTA CAUGHT SCAMMING Customers NOW They're PAYING
Toyota dealerships have been caught scamming their customers by forcing them into purchasing unnecessary products. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has accused Toyota of promoting warranties and gap insurance as mandatory, causing buyers to regret their purchases. Toyota even made it difficult for customers to cancel these products, damaging their credit scores and limiting their ability to get loans. Although Toyota has agreed to pay $60 million in fines, this scandal could seriously harm their reputation as a trusted brand.

I had to tell the finance guy, "Im not interested, please move on". I must have told him this same answer 20 times in a row, as he tried to get me to change my response "why don't you want the extended warranty?" "I'm not interested, please move on." I think the dealers are awful. However, I am wondering about the "lifetime warranties" that are available. If we assume that we will have high inflation in coming years, then car repairs (labor and parts) could get lot more expensive. From this perspective it might be a good idea to pay for the extra warranty because it would be like paying for the parts and labor in advance. Although this also assumes that the warranty is actually honored.

As soon as I told the first Ford dealership salesman that I was going to buy in cash (after he enthusiastically asked me what kind of monthy I payments was wanting), he told me he was busy and handed me a card before he quickly disappeared like a magician. At the next dealership, I didn't say anything until they told me the price and then I called from the credit union to let them know that my loan officer found the same vehicle for a thousand dollars less and also just a 30 minute drive away. They quickly dropped the price by a thousand and I bought it. I did notice that the salesman was slightly less friendly after that happened, since I'm sure that he assumed that Id be financing through them, plus I didn't buy gap coverage or any service warranties either. 😆

Like @memphisraines8118 said, none of the awful bits will change. What will change is Amazon will do as Amazon typically does and put at the top of the first page the vehicle with the lowest base price. Dealers will have to initially compete with each other to avoid getting their vehicles buried outside of page 1. This might have the adverse effect of making them hungrier to force as many add-ons as possible once you're in the door. They may have to give up on mark-ups though based on where the market is currently going and whether or not Amazon will take seriously complaints from customers that the advertised price was a lie.

In every case, I told the salesman I do not want a sales pitch on ANYTHING from the finance manager. I just want the truck and nothing else. I'm paying through the nose for these trucks and I'm not spending a dime on extras. And have everything ready and be prepared because I expect to be in/out of the finance office in no more than 20 minutes. I asked the salesman several times if he understood and told them how to handle the closing. I also insist that there is no dealership branding on the truck. No stickers, no license plate frame, nothing. I will not be a rolling billboard for the dealership. If they want to make half my payment, then let's talk. Crickets. I have one other story. And this was before I started telling my salesman I do not want finance to pitch me any extras. A while back we bought a 2016 CRV that had only 5,000 miles on it. The previous owner towed it behind their motorhome so the mileage was very low. It was like new and just what we wanted as a daily driver. At the closing, the finance manager pitched me the extended warranty. I hesitated as usual but since it was a used car I thought I might consider it. The finance guy then tells me he can give me a better interest rate if I buy the extended warranty because the bank looks at that favorably. And the lower interest rate essentially lowers the payment to the point where it pays for the warranty. In a moment of weakness I bit. I got up the next morning thinking WTF. I don't need an extended warranty and it's BS to tell me I'd get a lower interest rate from the bank if I buy one. I realized I'd been lied to and ripped off. I went back to the dealership, waited to see the GM and raised hell. This was one of those mega dealers with multiple brands in several states. Big business. Of course he told me he was surprised and that is not the way they do business. They had me come back in, cancel the extended warranty, and redo the loan docs at the lower rate. They made the finance manager apologize profusely to by wife and I. I thought he should have been fired. I took the GM aside and asked him how many other people have been lied to and screwed like that. He didn't have an answer. I told him if I was a warrior, I would hire a lawyer and file a class action lawsuit. I didn't do it. In hind sight, I regret that. I think this was big time fraud and who knows how many people were cheated and lied to. These dealerships that lie and defraud people and then claim they weren't aware need a kick in the balls.

We had a new car loan with JP Morgan Chase at a decent rate in 2017. We were always 2 payments ahead on the payments, We sent an extra payment prior to going on vacation and while on vacation they tried to ding us with a missed payment notice. upon returning we terminated the loan and muscled up and just paid of the balance. Their bookkeeping by the lein holder was proven to be wrong, (we had the cancelled checks in hand) after paying off the note we required Chase to send us a letter retracting the late payment notice and admitting that the error was in their tracking of the payments!

It's so sad that the Toyota dealerships are doing this to their customers. Good advice Brandon. If you are not comfortable with all the terms and conditions, you need to take your time and make sure you understand what you are signing and if you have to, have them give you a copy of the paperwork to take home and have somebody else look at it and explain to you. Never sign any paperwok if you are uncomfortable with it. Once you sign the paperwork, it's a warp.

I and my wife feel victim to this bs. First time buyer and we were young and dumb. On a 2021 rav 4 hybrid LE bought brand new at Toyota Brookefield Napleton in WI. $30k msrp car, we paid a 2k mark up bc “shortage” and on top of that the warranty which was $5k basically, Which I said no to. We down $7000 for the car and the total came up to $40k after tax. Somehow I didn’t question myself nor my wife lmao. The whole process was just a blur in my head. My first time doing a loan and dealing with all this pressure the salesman and finance guy put on us. Rush us through the whole signing process and applications. Before signing they made us wait 2 to 3 hours before buying the car. On the 4th hour they just rushed everything. Now that I learned from the experience, I and my wife will never buy a new car anymore. Just a big waste of money and worst investment ever. Hope these dealers get screwed and all manufacturers or some go direct sells to consumers.

I went to a Toyota dealer last week to test drive a couple vehicles. The salesman I was supposed to meet with and I had been talking to was “with someone else” so I was given a different person. I clearly told them I wasn’t buying today and had some other test drives scheduled after this. I eventually drove one I liked and told them I had some time to look at numbers but that I still wasn’t buying today. They nearly locked the doors on the place trying to get me to sign an agreement, even though I’m not in a financial position to buy a car at the moment and had told them that. They went back to “the manager” 4 different times trying to lower the price of a vehicle out of my price range and also offered a trade-in in on my pickup worth not even half of its value. It was predatory. They kept showing me I could do payments of $700-$800 if I just signed today for a vehicle I told them I didn’t want. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough and tried to leave without being rude but they would not let me leave. And this is supposed to be the premier Toyota dealer in the area. I probably wont be buying a Toyota solely because of this experience.

GAP insurance is generally a huge rip off if you buy it at a dealership. I worked as a loan officer for a credit union for years...and did hundreds of loan closings. I used to see people paying $900, $1200, $1500, $1800+ for gap insurance, as itemized on their dealership sales order. The same policies we sold for $300. People were furious when they found out.. most of them called up and cancelled the policies and bought ours. There were a lot of unhappy sales people out there probably as a result. Believe it when I say it, a few people would total their cars shortly after buying them and those policies would pay out. It happens more than you would think. Super important if people were financing negative equity from their previous vehicles. Caveat emptor.

@@dnegel9546If you rolling in negative yes, if you are not putting any down yes, if you putting substantial down payment then NO, because that will absorb negative equity if you loose car in accident and differents in value of vehicle and loan amount is in your favor, or you are above water. Like insurance will pay you market value and you own more then that, gap will jump in and take care of differences, and with down payment you will owe less then market value, which translate money in your pocket after insurance pay loan.

@dnegel9546 I'd say if you are putting a huge amount down on the vehicle (at least 20%of the kelly blue value) you may not really need it. Not a lot of people do that, so it's definitely a good idea. And shop around for that policy since your local credit union/bank offers them at far less than dealerships. Also check with your existing auto insurer. They may have something similar. The whole point is to cover a deficiency balance in the event the vehicle gets in an accident and is deemed to be a total loss. You don't want to be stuck paying that left over loan balance unnecessarily

This is where he tries to sell you all kinds of extra crap. Before you even start part 1, tell them up front that you're not interested in part 2. The rest of the paperwork was online, but also was just super basic loan terms and whatnot. No extras trying to upsell you. The perks of not relying on a 3rd party dealership model and actually making money on the vehicles--you don't need to scam your customers to stay in business.

Will a car dealership let you take your contract and finance documents home to inspect for a few days before signing? Has anyone ever done this?

    • @ducewags
      @ducewags 5 месяцев назад +1

@GTVAlfaMan Can you do that when you buy a house? The answer is, yes you sure can on the two items, house and dealer.
If the dealer has other ideas with that idea, walk out.

Funny, I just bought a Corolla Hybrid and the sales guy did not push for anything. On the other hand, before buying the Corolla I went to see a Ford Maverick and they were pushing $3K on dealer-installed options and gap insurance on top of a $5K market adjustment charge. They did not want to drop off anything. A couple of days later a sucker bought the truck 😂

I really like your channel, I stumbled across it several months ago and have hit the like button each time. I just subscribed, and I have noticed in each video I noticed the same red xterra. I don't know if there are multiple vehicles that have been there or not, but I only noticed the Nissan because I have 2 pathfinders. Just noting the same vehicle in every video I've seen. Regardless great information, thanks

I wanted a 23 TRD off-road premium Lunar Rock 4runner with the KDSS. Only one dealer in my area has exactly what I wanted and I was being very picky about what I wanted. I went to the dealer with a 20k check in hand as a down payment on a (supposed) 55k truck. Went for a test drive everything was great my sales rep was a little stupid and I showed her more features about the 4runner than she knew. Fast forward to talking about price I said I'm putting 20k down and I want it at your website advertised price the sales manager overheard me and weaseled his way in. He ran my credit and when he came back he said "welp you have a 770 and with your 20k down on this 60k 4runner you're looking at $900/9%." I got so fucking heated it wasn't even funny I yelled at this dude "what fucking 27yr old is walking in here with 20 large to throw down as a down payment on a 55k 4runner." Then the manager proceeds to tell me well it's 60k due to it being a hot item and high demand and I couldn't take his bullshit anymore and stormed out of a packed dealership on a very busy Saturday morning on the sales floor. I was actually so pissed off at that dealership I went across the street to see my cousin who's 4th in command at an Audi dealer and drove away in a CPO 19 A5 it'll be a year I've owned Luna at the end of January and I love her she's been a very fun car and unlike most Audi owners I'm very maintenance happy and I'm also a tech so for me parts and maintenance kits are cheaper.

⛔Toyota for life owner...but, looking at other corp. 😡🤬 I went to Autonation Toyota in Centennial, CO. Looked at the 2024 Rav4 XLE. Sticker was approx $33500 and NO add-on on the window. Sat with the salesperson and he added on $8500 for tinting, windshield, dent, paint, interior protection, etc. plus $2800 for taxes....total was OVER $44,000! THIS is before even seeing the finance guy which will sell extended warranty!

    Toyota?? LooooL
How about pretty much e-v-e-r-y dealership has these tactics.
From the ol' let me ask my manager to the ol' I'm just the finance guy call me anytime, I'll take 1% off that ol interest rate let me pretend to type on my keyboard... They're all trained to take every last cent.
The "honest' ones are far and few, and those dealerships tend to be the ones in the middle of nowhere that people fly out to to get "msrp".

If you purchase a vehicle with a factory warranty and you decide that you are going to keep it long term I think you can purchase the extended warranty from the factory as long as the original warranty is still active. With all the electronics on these newer vehicles an extended factory warranty would probably be a good idea. I also think you can negotiate the cost of these warranties.

When we were buying a used vehicle from a Toyota dealership, the F&I guy was as crooked as they come. We were paying cash for the car and he tried to sign us up for all of these bogus products and trying to make it seem as though he was saving us money. My wife had no idea what was happening, but I called him out on it. $700 of bogus charges he tried to get out of me.
The Finance guy is the snake you should always be aware of when buying a car.

I’ve been shopping for a new vehicle for the last couple of months in the San Antonio area, and I cannot believe all the crap these dealers are trying to pull, from the back sale add ons that they claim are mandatory to one dealer actually added the salesman’s commission to the final negotiated price. No thank you!! I tell the salespeople up front hat the deal is over the minute they pull this crap!!! And then most of them have tried to do it anyway. I have filed 2 FTC. Complaints in the last week. We’ll see if that goes anywhere.

I'm glad you covered this! It needs to be known to all that don't pay attention to all the add on at signing you have say and options it's your money! So may not agree but I saved about 5k on my used 2020 silverado not getting the 4,500$ extended warranty or the body protection add on and something with nitrogen with my tires as you stated. I also switched lenders about a month after cause the finance guy at the dealer found the "best rate" thru a bank which was not the best I cut 1.5% switching lenders. The problem with ppl being broke is not doing research and not saving money and putting alot down. Having 5 or 7 yr loans on 50k 70k vehicles is crazy!

Yep, it happened to me. Then I just paid off my car early, by 18 months. I learned I get $1,300 refund check from my unused warranty. I called 2 months later, and they CASHED my check!!!!!! Let me repeat that, Toyota cashed MY check. They sent it out to Toyota and made out to TMCC. Unbelievable.
So now I am waiting for the next check. I doubt I will get the check, but you'd think they wouldn't be still screwing customers over! I would love to get another Toyota, but I love many things that are not good for me.
Thank you for talking about this because no one else is. ❤
