I know you guys did not mean to, but in the gospel guitar community for us Kerry Marshall was making waves way before Asato, Faye, etc...they are new cats. Kerry "2 Smooth" Marshall first made his digital presence on Gospelchops, a drummer's platform. I think we def should give him a nod.

Yeah I agree ,Kerry Marshall definitely deserves his props and alongside Jairus Mozee

Yeah, I don't know about this breakdown. What about Musiq Soulchild, Van Hunt, and Bilal among others? It should also be mentioned that D'Angelo plays guitar too and he was the one writing his music, not Spanky. Moreover, most of the techniques in "Neosoul" guitar already existed by Curtis Mayfield, Hendrix, Bobby Womack, Wes Mongomery, and with Rhythm & Blues, Soul, and Jazz music...

+1 for Bilal, Musiq Soulchild under the "neo soul" listen list.
D'Angelo - yes! Spanky Alford is who most guitarists transcribe (that Lord's Prayer video has done the rounds😃), as well as the other guitar players on his records. Isaiah Sharkey and Charlie Hunter in particular.
Rhythm & Blues, Soul, and Jazz - 100%. I forgot to mentioned Curtis Mayfield - good shout! Every guitarist has listened to Hendrix, so that goes without saying.

Why have a commentator that isn’t familiar with the history or genre? The other guy didn’t add any value. You forgot about Jubu smith in the 90s who gave way for jmo, Sharkey, etc. Get some black people on that know black American music

This is exactly what I was thinking. They repeatedly water down the genre. Learning about black music is totally different from being raised and trained in black music.

I'm a bit puzzled that I never heard of this genre until the late 2010s- I thought it was new

I came cross this when I was searching for the idea for my next song. This opens a whole new world for me. I love neo-soul but never explore the roots of it. Thank you for doing this. This video worth more comments and views. Please considering break it into short video to get more attention.

Lots of influences on my playing from all those incredible guitarists. NeoSoul mixes well with jazz, funk, fusion and other soulful styles, and that's a thing I love about it.

love to hear it, the way it combines the best parts of those genres is what makes it so satisfying. Neo-soul musicians can be really versatile too!
