Thanks Rob I really appreciate that!!! Glad you’re learning! It’s pretty awesome to know that I can reach so many people… I hope to have a course out someday!
I'm generally a fan of neo-soul guitar so I have few complaints. On the other hand guys like Curtis Mayfield and Hendrix were basically creating much of the vocabulary for it decades ago. That's not to say that there haven't been some great guitarists recently who have been doing interesting and innovative things with double stops and chordal lead style. There are some really talented new guitarists out there! However, I saw a guy basically playing a solo guitar version of Axis Bold As Love and doing a fine job of it though when I later spoke with him he denied it was Axis or even knowing the song! Who knows, maybe he didn't. Wasn't gonna argue about it. He certainly had lots of those Hendrix licks down in a way that he could riff off of them on demand which was impressive.

The F natural on E- is ok and diatonically correct since, so it’s a nice color tone. b9’s on 1/2 diminished chords happen all the time in the harmony and melody
IMHO I believe looking at it from that (jazz guy) perspective, sure it works. However, from a stylistic and totally diatonic perspective, it sounds like a clanker to me - and as I said, I'm a "jazz guy," too. Oh well, thanks again for watching. That means a lot to me!
What a lot of neosoul players are missing is the booty, the church and the sound of the streets they're missing the rawness. Isaiah Sharkey has it though but nobody is quite like spanky
Good points! Trust me, all of that stuff is not lost on me as I was considering making a comparison between gospel guitar and Neo soul. There is that schism between the two that clearly denotes one side is having church and The other side knowing there are churches that exist but that’s about the length of it! I decided not to go down that rabbit hole. Neo soul is definitely something other than gospel guitar, although there are players that straddle that line. Thanks for watching and I hope you have subscribed and hit the notification bell So you don’t miss anything that would be great to have you onboard.
@@streetwiseguitar5113 I'll say that most of the guitarists in instagram now sound the same. It's clear that most haven't studied players like Joe Pass, West Montgomery, Hendrix, George Benson and jazz and blues. The genre is loosing its flavour. In my honest opinion blues and pentatonics is overlooked by the modern guitarist who on average play 3nps and come from metal. I think it's almost seen as hipster to play Neosoul now.
Merry Xmas to you and yours dear Prof’! What’s the name of the beautiful intro you played @the beginning of your dissection? Don’t tell me you wrote it. Shazam was not able to trace this tune.

My ears immediately perked up on the m9 (F) in Achmad's solo but not in a negative way yours seem to have. Which is unusual for me given I'm not a fan of this interval in general. Maybe it's not only because it resolved down relatively quickly but also because it felt almost like a suspension from the previous Fmaj7 chord.
Hey Devin! It could be all the years spent in the ivory tower that made it perk up for me. Mind you, I have no aversion to suspensions that are resolved… I think just where it happened. Rhythmically is what caught my ear. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch the video and I hope you subscribe hit the notification bell cause I wouldn’t want to miss any other cool things that are upcoming.
ima need the song at the beginning to become a real song, i am searching for songs that has that exact sound, new neo soul that has the lines and still follows the vocal, and no generic drum pattern under it 😩
Ha! If you read the comments, you will see that there are a number of people who hate that song and hate me, and also hate the way that I sang it lol it’s refreshing to read your comment! Thank you!
Elijah!!! Great question. I think 9s at the lowest and 11s at the highest. If I was playing that style all the time I could make 8s work. Then again...the GUITAR matters A LOT! If you play 8s on a strat with a stiff trem, they feel like 9s. If you play 8s on a Gibson scale, they'll feel like 7.5s. So the scale of your guit. must be factored in. Again, I think 9s 9s at the lowest and 11s at the highest. By the way I hope you subscribe and hit the notification bell. It would be great to have you part of this community!
Man... you went through way worse midterms than ANNNNY of my recent students. YOu had it tough and you should give yourself a pat on the back for having made it through!
Hi Chino! I’m not sure which, “he” you were speaking of? At any rate I wanted to thank you so much for watching the video! I hope you got a few nice licks out of it!?
You need some compression to play these kind of things I think. Otherwise it's hard for the single notes to sound as loud as the chords. Especially when the tapping parts come into play. That's what I think. Is that true by any chance?
You know… I think with 8s that could really help. That said I really don’t think any of these examples included a dedicated compression pedal. By the way thank you for taking the time to watch this video and I hope you look at the latest videos I had just finished which are, “professor reacts… “Please do subscribe as it would be great to have you as a part of the community

This is proof theory came after the improv… It’s never the same. Neo soul is playing from your soul if you’re copying it isn’t soul anymore. That’s why it will always sound weird when copying.
Haha why people looking blues on Neo-soul? Let's reverse the topic, why there's no Neo-soul style in Blues? I mean they are both different genre. but some Neo-soul guitarists, they're combining both Neo-soul and Blues licks like Mateus Asato. Anyways great content brother. New sub here
Thank you so much for your kind words! Stay tuned for the upcoming, “music professor reacts!” There’s going to be many of them with a variety of topics I hope to have the next one finished by this weekend latest.
"No blues in neo soul". My ears must be broken because it's Bluesy AF to me. There's no straight elements that a blues purist would say "aha! There's the blues" which is what I think you mean. But it is really bluesy in tone and feel and even that phrase off the minor chord into a minor pentatonic is...well... bluesy... I'm very curious to know when the term Neo Soul was first used. I have only encountered it very recently and I have heard this kind of guitar playing for a very long time in various forms. I am very at home with this style because it reflects the kind of thing I like to play when I pick up the guitar. It's a bit of everything trying to be original and melodic. It fascilitates a lot of room for feel because you don't be strictly blues or jazz or soul or rock even... You just play guitar and try to make it sit nice...y'know? I love it. Now I know it's an actual thing I'm rather happy. It does seem to have aquired a label after the fact though. Like when people say Black Sabbath were the first Doom Metal band. Retrospectively true.
Thank you for taking the time to write your comment! Also, by doing so you’re supporting this channel which I sincerely appreciate along with your perspective! If you want to know about Neo Soul from somebody who was there when it was invented or shall I say the phrase was coined, you need to watch my most recent interview with Ella Feingold! She played with Kanye West, prince, Bruno Mars, Erykah Badu, Queen Latifah, and the list goes on and on. There’s some very informative stuff and commentary that she makes on Neo soul in particular! plus it’s a great interview that you will learn a lot from! Let me know how you like it!
I don't get thet hate many folks have developed for this style.. It's popular on insta/social media because people enjoy the vibe.. Instead of hating and trash talking the musicians, why not enjoy or ignore? WE have enough hatered surrounding us already, since when is playing music "you" don't like such blasphemious act?
It's basically socialwashing shredding, as it tries to cram as many events as possible in the shortest amount of time, and recycles afro-american music. If in two decades the KKK takes the power in the USA every guitarist will be playing neo-viking licks which will pillage Malmsteen instead of Hendrix
I watched a Rick Beato post last week about some of the young kids just jumping on RUclips an copying rather than learning by ear like us old folk from records tapes an CDs playing a phrase over and over again not really knowing if we was in the right position etc until we get what we think is exactly it it’s a very interesting thing to think about the technique is really really great but is the ear devolved as good as it could be
Hey, thanks for your comment! If they are young… They might have amazing technique, but they might be lacking in other areas. Hopefully, they will all level itself out as they get older.
When it comes to Neo Soul harmony, understand that it comes from 80s hip hop. So 80s hip hop largely sampled rnb/funk/jazz from the 60s and 70s. So cut a chord here and there and paste them into a loop. Western music theory wasn't really followed. Well re-enter musicians, they're like, no need to sample we can still play this stuff. So in the 90s we get this rnb, funk, jazz hiphop music. A new musical culture was created.
Thank you very much for your input and I sincerely appreciate the support by watching this channel! You might enjoy my breakdown on Kendrick Lamar’s, “united in grief.” Give it to View and see what you think! Also would be great to have you as a member of the community so please subscribe!
Most people that tag a style neo-soul have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. New soul is something that started with a slimmer version of the usual huge orchestra. What people today refer to as neo soul today is a collection of gospel quartet movements placed over a hip rhythm, it's basically chill out music, and it's also corny and has been appropriated. Artist like Jill Scott, music soul child, D'Angelo are a more appropriate example of new soul. But let the appropriation do what's it been doing for a century...scratch a itch.
Sorry about that! Which adverts are you seeing? Of course you know I have no control on that whatsoever… That’s a RUclips’s way of making money. Hope you enjoy the video anyways.
I love the tone and musicality in Neo Soul. My only comment is that many players seem to have completely developed alone in bedrooms instead of playing with singers and bands, and therefore they tend to over play.
Well said, Andy ! And that is how Neo soul developed into the delicate style that it is. There’s no way something like that could’ve ever developed in a band! Not to mention you probably get kicked out of the band lol anyways thanks for supporting my channel. You’re contributing really matters and I hope you have subscribed so you can continue to enjoy the killer stuff that’s going to be upcoming!
Wait till you learn rock music came from soul music .....so if neo soul isn't good enough for you then imagine what all the black originators of rock felt about the whitewashing of their sound
Yeah I definitely got to disagree with you on this part because if you listen to the original people who were doing this Isaiah Sharkey and sparky Alford these cats definitely played in bands. To an extent I would even say Charlie Hunter had his hand in the Neo soul revolution because he played on D’Angelo’s voodoo album.
@@NagoyaHouseHead lmao what is a banjo??? Where did that come from?? Soul music is rhythm and blues you dingbat ....don't tell me about my culture you uncultured jar of mayonnaise

I hate shredding with a passion but neo-soul is even worse, at least shredding doesn't pretend to be sophisticated They take the slurs and slides and bits and bobs of afro-american guitar styles and cram as many of them as possible in the shortest amount of time What a pathetic joke, all ornamentation no substance but hey at least it's not (not always) scales ran up and down with no pause just as in "intellectual" jazz

Thank you so much for Your input! It’s really nice to have observant musicians make comments! Thank you very much for your support I sincerely appreciate it!

Great vid! and these players are amazing. Are there any neo soul artists and albums you would recommend to better get to know this genre?
Ulysse! First off, thank you so much for your support! 2nd, I wouldn't know not ONE record any of those guys have made. I don't even think Mateus Asato has made a record of that stuff. It's not surprising to be honest! I could be wrong though... perhaps there are a few lurking!?!
Try listening to artist like Jorja Smith, Ella Mai, Lucky Dayz, Cymande, Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack and of course Sade
It's not so much the riffs but more the chord voicings that are being chosen that does it for me and makes it so harmonically interesting.

Great video. The sentiment of neo soul reminds me of Peter Green to a certain degree, however loosely.
Interesting!
Where the full vid of the second guy? Achmad?

My ears immediately perked up on the m9 (F) in Achmad's solo but not in a negative way yours seem to have. Which is unusual for me given I'm not a fan of this interval in general. Maybe it's not only because it resolved down relatively quickly but also because it felt almost like a suspension from the previous Fmaj7 chord.
Hey Devin! It could be all the years spent in the ivory tower that made it perk up for me. Mind you, I have no aversion to suspensions that are resolved… I think just where it happened. Rhythmically is what caught my ear. @@streetwiseguitar5113 B-rilliant! :D
who is the guitarist in the first video?
What size strings works best for neo soul??

All great points!!!!
The irony is that neo-soul songs are not at all very different to jazz songs of 70 years ago
Yyyup! So true!

I love the tone and musicality in Neo Soul. My only comment is that many players seem to have completely developed alone in bedrooms instead of playing with singers and bands, and therefore they tend to over play.
