- In a lot of ways 13-year-old Cameron Thompson is a normal teenage boy; obsessed with computer games, sporting the first hints of a moustache and a newfound interest in girls. However he is also a maths genius who is currently doing an Open University degree in applied mathematics and has Asperger's Syndrome, both of which create challenges in his life. Can Cameron balance the need to remain the genius he has always been, and therefore different, with the classic teenage longing to be accepted?

I'm not sure I've ever seen a more wonderful and inspiring set of parents. They love without smothering. They advise without commanding. They support without judging. And to do all this with no blueprint for a son so gifted, and also so challenged, is something that really deserves the utmost praise!
Also, honorable mention to the teacher as well. As someone who found himself stuffed in a similar program because of a physical disability, I can tell you firsthand that teachers like her are absolute unicorns. She's also one in a million.
And on top of being amazing parents to one brilliant child with his own challenges. They are wonderful parents to 3 children! Another one of which is also autistic. They put in such effort with their children. It's so amazing and admirable. I remeber once my biological parents were having the biggest fight in the living room. I hid in my room and just wailed crying. This was at like 13 as well. And my step dad came in and smacked me. He said, stop crying! And I stopped crying because I didn't want to be hit. This guy's brain is really incredible; that puzzle with the coins near the beginning of the video for example. I paused the video, thought about it for some time, got out a pen and paper, worked through the first 8 examples for smaller cases, came up with a conjecture, tried to prove it rigorously, before eventually coming up with a hand wavy justification that I understood for why it worked that. All in all, I think it took me about 20 minutes to get to an answer. Play the video again, and Cameron stumbles a couple of times, then manages to get to the correct answer just by working it through in his head. I wish someone would teach him that art is backed up by math. Art is an expression of math and when math catches up, we will all understand the importance (beyond beauty) of art. Math is the language of nature and art is the expression.
I find the simplest way of introducing children who are more focused on mathematics such as this case is to try and get them into engineering from a young age and slowly move into architecture, to show how mathematics and aesthetics can combine interact with one another. I generally start off by showing sculpture work by David C. Roy. He combines his background in aeronautical engineer working on jet engines with his wife's passion for art and design, to make kinetic wooden sculptures that can move in motion for hours at a time. Yes, there is beauty in nature but it can be difficult to show that beauty to someone Cameron who has a hard time understanding emotions what most people can see while observing nature and art. But with something like kinetic sculptures theirs the physical beauty is not only the engineering of the parts and how they correspond to one another but also in a mathematical sense, how each click of the gear equals one rotation of a wheel but depending on the rotation and force applied the way the sculpture can appear varies. Also, the beauty of seeing your mathematical theory put into a physical would most likely help him understand how art can appease others even if he doesn't truly understand it from another view.
“When math catches up” hahahahahahahahahahaha
No wonder he struggles with university level math.
I was saying the same thing in a different kind of way, but I came to the conclusion he just isnt ready for it yet maybe, that's something that one grows to understand and like, and I'm sure he will see within time, just like when his hormones kicked in, he started to like girls, when he is pondering things on more of a deeper level as age comes he may start to realize at least the value of art. I imagine one day he will be drawing complex mathematical shapes and it will suddenly come to him in a moment of realization of their beauty, but hey, who knows heh.
@@ilo5736 I think he meant with human's abilities to utilize maths, as maths just is maths, whether we have figured something out with it or not yet is our abilities to use it, which is what I'm assuming he was referring to.

Let’s not hope for the worst to repeat.
"History is constantly repeating itself and we're constantly going through war, the only difference every time is more advanced technology." So true. Always heard the original saying growing up but times have changed.
History repeating itself that's an undeniable fact, but technology being more advanced that's still a claim to prove merely because we ignore a lot about ancient civilizations. For example, scientists say that with our modern technology we wouldn't be able to replicate the Giza pyramids with the same precision during the same period, so how they did it? That remains a mystery historians can't answer and only have theories they can't prove!

My family’s great
Beautiful family
spot on, i love your comment ;-)
100% perfect parents & siblings & teachers...etc! I can see this kid becoming well known brillant something. He has a sense of humor.. kind of like Einstein & Hawkings. Would love to keep up with him. Blessings to all his family...& this production team to make this public to help inspire others
He is so special. I noticed that He is very self-conscious and mature, and that's very important. He knows his pros and cons.
The Bieber conversation was hilarious.... they both can't understand the hype 😂😂😂
i agreed with them i was like they are normal ...
Cam: he's torturing us with his music!
H😂😂😂😂 baby baby ohhhh
I didn't understand it either ...
My husband has Asperger's syndrome hes a programming genius.
Both of his parents are Asperger's aswell ,one is a doctor the other a micro biologist.
I love them all with every bit of my heart.
Twisted Frannie my father is a surgeon in New York City. I hv 3 surgeon 👨⚕️ cousins and 2 more are anesthesiologists.
Assburgers haha
@@jovanydenhoed4581 ,I'm going to guess that you're a child.
It’s really amazing how some people have brains that can achieve those levels
Twisted Frannie Either put down the phone or turn off the computer if you can’t handle someone making fun of your beloved husbands condition.
This young man could not have had better parents and his new teacher is so supportive and just extraordinary at her job.
This is a likable boy .....I wish him and his family all the best. It really shows that being exceptional can be a lonely and uncertain place.
My heart broke to see him panicking and crying over his university assignment. :'(
He has never failed so it is confusing to him.
idk wther to be proud that we live within a mile
@@dantdm9740 wow
honestly i relate to him so much. i get being frustrated that you can't do something correctly after years of being the best in something you're passionate about.
@Bo Sann (My autism-train got a new passenger now wooooo) But jokes aside, I totally agree with you. I can literally see how his stress turns into a full meltdown. But I'm glad his parents stand by his side and support him. I wish I had parents like them: trying to calm you down, sitting next to you, listening closesly etc.
“We’re looking for gifted, not weird”
*shruggs “how bout both?”
Love it!

As a public high school teacher in the United States, I was impressed by the autism/Asperger support at his school. We have special education, but if the child is bright, they are on their own. Kudos to his family! in addition, I think a math degree from Cambridge would be much more prestigious than one from an extension university.
I cried with him every single time he did .... having to explain what "just is" to people that would not understand it to begin with, regardless of the statements having an explanation or not
The highest achievement you can achieve is to be yourself in a world that tries to forever change you.
Exactly don't let the world change you change it for the better.
Wow so true
There’s a lot of mathematics in the arts. He may have found satisfaction in arts if it was presented through related mathematical theory.
Klara G was thinking the same thing
i wonder what his opinions are on music
*abstract*
my answer was also matematics.. It shows how much of a genius he really is. I fell confused alot.
@@baddieexox I agree, I loved starting music at a young age and learnt fractions in cello before in my math lessons
I was diagnosed with Asperger's at 14/15, as a girl and when he said I have the social ability of a talking potato, I felt it resonate within my bones.
Every Kid needs a teacher like Ms Moore and a friend like Timothy! The parents are wonderful, his siblings awesome! I loved the Cambridge Math Professor, he was so wise! I sure would like an update!
I find him adorable rather than weird
It's not his problem if other ppl feel inadequate around him.
I think hes charming in his own very unique way. It would be great if everyone could be seen as charming for their own unique ways.
@keecefly No I'm ADHD not autistic but he is indeed very adorable
Same
The reality is most children struggle with friendships never mind with a child who hasn't got the ability to follow social norms and fully understand their own and others emotions. Lots of adults are the same. My son is loving and kind, but his ASD means that he struggles in groups, he feels the need to take the lead especially in school as he is very black and white and can't understand others ideas especially if he thinks it's wrong. In these situations kids with ASD are filled with anxiety which results in a fight or flight response known as meltdowns which also means that other kids are also very aware that these can happen and avoid the children. While looking at a documentary can be adorable, the reality is heart breaking as a parent as it's not just a matter of being socially awkward.
Anyone else want a documentary following his buddy Tim?
Bieber is an idiot.
the one using him as a human calculator? :)
Yeah!
@@timflippance3040 lol are you THE Tim?
Heartwarming. What a great little guy (and his wonderful parents)!
Cameron has a great sense-of-humour. He'll do well in life.
His parents are wonderfully supportive and loving. It's great to see.
...So then I said "You can have 3.5789*10^20, but you can't go beyond 10^99!"

Same, normies.
was the answer 500 heads?
@@JANDR0 The answer was 31 Heads and 969 Numbers.
I think this young boy is brilliant both in the mind and in spirit. His parents are so caring and supportive like most but take it a step further in dealing with Cameron. I wish him all the best as he head's down the highway of life.Thank you for sharing this story of this amazing young man.
This kid is so smart. I'm not talking about his abilities in math, rather his ability to understand his mindset and awareness of his abilities and expectations. Hardly anyone, especially his age, are able to do that within their entire life.
25:47 "and well half of the girls have low standards" Im dying 😂😂
That was always my favourite half.
@@rasputinswalloper475 xd only ones that like me
I mean half of them are obsessed with that 'Bieber'
